When I first saw this, I thought "How on earth can anyone impart anything useful about writing murder mysteries in barely TWO MINUTES?" But then I watched it, and - by George, you did it! This was really useful and informative - thank you!

Thanks for the tips! I’m currently writing a fantasy-themed murder mystery, where the deceased is a powerful wizard and the characters are magical (fairy, elf, vampire, genie, etc.). I’m also writing a theft mystery, sci-fi themed.

I write cozy crime fiction. How and the 5 Ws is good, but I add two more: weather and witnesses.
I like the idea of an outline for both of my main characters. I've toyed with the idea of alternating chapters told by each, but the narrator, although a mystery writer, doesn't have the same deduction skills as his actor partner. When he's away at a book conference, I have planned on starting one book with the actor's POV.
I've gotten to know both chaps rather well and we should have a fun journey together.
The hardest part is writing from the Canadian's POV and not letting the Briticisms of my other character (and my own background) get into his speech patterns.

Writing a murder mystery that takes place during an art heist on a DJ’s mansion during a party, and this helped me out with the planning quite a bit! Thank you so much.

I knew to have the murder fully thought out and planned, but I hadn't thought to write an outline from their pov. Thank you! That's brilliant!

Goodmorning. Bumped in your video and found interesting. As fed up with fiction Carabinieri Marhals, Police Commissioners and Inspectors usually sleuthing around here in Italy, writing (kind trying) on a PI investigating the seemingly casual death of another PI on behalf of widow of latter, leading to blackmail case on a forgotten homicide and everything revolving around.
    Actually just headaches...

I'm currently writing a murder mystery where someone is a sleepwalking murderer. By day that person is a detective hunting themself, but they don't know that they're the one doing the killing. you said to make two outlines, one for the murderer and one for the protagonist, but what if they're the same people?

I'd say do one for awake detective and sleepwalking detective.

I’m working on a dark murder mystery and my goal is to make it unique, something new the world hasn’t really read much of, and something were the outcome is very unpredictable.
