REBUILDING | Burnout and back again.

  • In collaboration with the fantastic Tom Gulson of Critical Exposure Films this is my story of Rebuilding after burnout: In 2022 after only 2 EDR races I took the biggest risk of my career and pulled out of racing for the remainder of the season. It was a terrifying and isolating time, very few people understood - me being one of them. I'm extremely driven by nature, but I had nothing left, who was this??! This was a really hard experience to share, I felt ashamed of myself and perceived as “weak” despite this taking the most courage and strength I’ve ever had to muster. Making that decision, and using the time to take a break and make space to: reflect; work closely with my mental performance coach; to do a lot of reading, learning and talking with people in order to realise where I was, how I got there and what I needed in order to avoid this in future. It allowed me to level up not only as an athlete but as a person.
I hope by sharing this we can better understand that burnout is a result of pushing way too hard for way too long. Like any physical over-use injury I hope we can start treating mental health injuries with the same respect. I hope this sparks conversations so we can try to better understand the human experience and become more compassionate toward one another and allow us to better support each other. Cheers to that!
Thank you to GT Factory Racing and all our team partners who supported me through this journey back!

I had saved this one for whenever I would have time to wind down and watch it properly. Totally worth it. What a beautiful piece of story telling. Taking the time to understand and share your story, exposing yourself, being transparent, open, and caring about your own performance in life and racing was refreshing and so enjoyable to watch. Keep it up Katie! You continue to inspire many, many more everyday, myself included. 🙌🙏

what an interesting watch, you see so much about the podiums, the racing and the push to be top. But you don't hear about the mental strain and the need to release so much pressure of burn out. Balance in all things is so key, too much of a tip to one side for so long is catastrophic. Cool to see you slowly getting back to normal and enjoying the climb.

It’s a real shame to see Enduro as a discipline in the state it’s in too. You have a great set of people, fired up and ready to race and the calendar for 24 offers less opportunities for those people. We all know the bike industry is in a pickle, but to me the organisation of the EDR isn’t helping either….

Great video. We often look at pro cyclists and think yeah they have such a great life, when in reality, cycling is their job and just like a person sitting in a office all day, they can get burnt out from it and suffer mentally. Hopefully you can get a new ride for 24 and kick on from 23 👍

I always find it quite astonishing that a female rider with consistent top 10 or top 20 results has to put the effort in to find sponsors. Your male counterparts with similar results would not have this problem. Keep enjoying the riding Katy (and the painting).
