The music in this game is so good. I have probably listened to the music for more time than I’ve spent playing the game, and I’ve got like 50+ hours on the game
I bought this game in like 2017 when I first got my laptop 'for college classes.' I remember being put off by 'the intended experience involves risking all your progress' and being overwhelmed by all the mechanics. Explorers of sky was unironically the closest game to this I had played, so it was a bit of an adjustment. But I got distracted by other games and thus tangledeep became one of the first 'games I'll get back to later' on my steam account. But this video reminded me of its existence and now it seems like it's right up my alley, so thanks for making this video!
We love getting laptops for college classes then using them for video games (and homework I guess) I’m glad the video brought you back and enjoy playing!
Zircon was known for music before making this game, so hearing the 5/5 for audio is unsurprising. While metaprogression is not required, they do suggest using that version as the default.
1:19 I know it popped up on the screen for just a second, but I do think it's important to emphasize that there is a difficulty mode that doesn't include permadeath. I know that's not unique to this game and that experienced traditional roguelike fans might not bother with it, but when talking with people who enjoy other kinds of roguelikes but don't play traditional ones, complete permadeath usually comes up as the biggest point of contention. Or rather, that they'd give them a try if there was an option to disable permadeath. Given that, the inclusion of a non-permadeath mode could be a big draw to roguelike fans who would appreciate that, as well as dispel the notion that all traditional roguelikes are invariably permadeath no question. Not only that, but it's also good for those who want to focus more on finding out the full story.
This is true this is something I should of given more spotlight but absolutely right for those who would rather not deal with perma-death this game has you covered!
The game mechanics are a nice callback to games I am fond of (necrodancer PMD woo!), but coming from the hell that is ADOM, Noita, and Caves of Qud this past year makes me want to leave any more time investmest into new games on the backburner. Nice review, by the way. I appreciate that you are pushing out a video despite not fully completing the game. Having fun without going for 100% is an underrated roguelike quality.
That’s totally fair I will say since it is an older title it will go on sale I got it for 3 bucks so it was an absolute steal so if you are interested I hope it goes on sale again! And of course I think it’s the most important to enjoy the experience rather than just trying to speed run to an end!
mmm.. bungus my beloved. Definitely a game to keep in mind, especially after Crypt of the Necrodancer and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon got namedropped! thank you for the video and review!
Btw I know even I rarely watch all the stuff you do but the amount of views on your videos is criminal. Great edits, adorable avatar, insightful breakdowns. I am unnecessarily angry for ya
Aw I greatly appreciate that. Like honestly the kind words mean the world to me. There’s no need to watch everything but people like you being here makes all the rough times thank you so much!
I have played this game for a bit, but RUclips doesn't know that so I just have to assume I was summoned by the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon mention. Very gamer opinions mr rabbit man!
I find Tangledeep's difficulty to be very strange when looked at from a bird's eye view of people playing the game. Not in the sense that there's anything wrong with the game's difficulty itself, but more that it seems that people either find it incredibly hard to survive or decently easy outside of particularly tough encounters with almost no in between. My best guess is that the game is balanced with the assumption that you know the standard roguelike tactics used to avoid taking too much damage, so if you don't use those tactics, you're going to die or at least run out of resources much quicker. This results in someone like me who had previous roguelike experience when I started playing basically never going below the flask soft cap and tons of healing items in my inventory, but a lot of new players brought in with the visuals thinking that healing is limited to a ridiculous degree.
I can see that I definitely can see how those more familiar with this style of roguelike have a much easier time. For me I know I am not as familiar with these roguelikes so I had a bit harder time. That being said after my first abysmal run I found myself with a large stock pile of healing items but still found myself living on the edge of death often. But I know difficulty often comes down to the player's experience!
Classic dungeon crawlers with good art? I'm sold so far... Th abilities seem intuitive too... I need to check the specs for this cause the PC at home has ass specs and can't even run BBCF. My lappy is better but it's dying hmm... Don't mind me just thinking out loud I suppose
@@roguelikerabbit hey when I get further into making it id love to! Also followed your twitch earlier, was fun to watch your stream of this game! And yeah,I think you will eventually pop off on a review, keep the pace bunny dude!
terrific! also it's not a roguelike _exactly,_ but maybe check-a-look at Drova - Forsaken Kin. it's a systems-based sprite-animated open world RPG that i think you will like
If you mean to watch what you missed. On my channel you can go to the live section and watch the vod which is the entire stream just in video form! Other than that I try to make community posts about it to remind everyone but I know RUclips isn’t always the best about showing those.
Have a bit of a love/hate with mystery dungeon games, they are appealing but i haven't really found one that made me not want to stop playing it after a few runs. This is mostly because they were made with bullshit mechanics in mind (Shiren comes to my immediate trauma). Might still pick this up later, though unsure if its one that i would stick with, but i wont know until i try it.
Thats fair and this game has other modes if you want something a bit more chill! It was just on sale but I am sure it will again if you want to wait! It managed to pick it up for 4 bucks!
Tangledeep was meant to be a faithful SNES/16-bit recreation, hence the visual and audio choices made. Fun fact: a lot of the hate this game has gotten is due to the fact all playable characters are women. Some men's masculinity is apparently that fragile lol. The devs recently (as in 2 weeks ago) launched their 2nd game Flowstone Saga. It's a RPG with Tetris Gaiden style combat and, once again, a lot of minigames.
Ah yes because there is technically only one playable character who can just play a lot of classes. I don’t know why that matters when the gameplay and mechanics are so solid And nice! Thank you for letting me know i will definitely take a look!

Sounds well-made, but not my style of game. Thanks for the review.
Fair enough! Thank you!
This game also has a highly detailed pet system and a rogue-like mode called Dream Catcher (or something similar).
