- The complete experience of the trip between Bratislava and Poprad-Tatry with the first ZSSK Intercity train departing from Bratislava in the morning from Bratislava Hlavná Stanica.
Our tickets were in economy class. The restaurant service on the restaurant car was the best I've ever seen until now.

A question for Slovak viewers: Is there are difference in service between the IC trains and the R trains between KE and BA (besides the Rs are slower and have more stops)?
That's a good question. I went once from Bratislava to Kosice in the Rychlic (R train) and if I remember well there wasn't water bottle for free and I don't remember if there was a restaurant car or not. But I would say that the main difference is the speed (and the price, of course).
If you want a better answer, I would recommend you to visit a specialised train channel. I know one that knows a lot about Czech and Slovak trains. You can ask him whatever you want about trains. :)

kbst84 in R trains can students and seniors travel for free and they are slower. Both categories have restaurant car.
I knew that about students and senior people. I wasn't sure about the restaurant car. But now that you confirm it, I remember that the time I went to Kosice in the Rychlik I had one schnitzel at the train haha Incredible how the mind works.

There are several differences: R trains are slower - much slower. But they are also cheaper - free for EU students and pensioners. Also IC trains have compulsory seat reservation so full train means nobody standing in aisle (it has also some disadvantages like: you can't change a seat if you don't like yours). You would not like to experience a full R train. Imagine some suburban trains in India or the subway in Tokyo :D IC trains has highest priority on network - if some outstanding situation occur, IC trains are dispatched first. Also there are ongoing construction works between Puchov and Zilina = trains are operated on a single track this year = some trains will be surely delayed. If a delayed R train arrive to one station at the end of the one-track-line and an on-schedule IC train to the other station at the other end of the one-track line, the IC has a priority and the infrastructure workers do all their best to keep the delay of IC trains as low as possible. The IC trains are pulled by the best and most reliable locomotives in Slovakia, the cars are newest and cleanest and the personnel is the best and user-friendliest the operator can provide. And last but not least, there is also another connection between BA-KE: the southern R train service - this is literally the Tour de Slovakia over slow, partially-electrified track with trains without restaurant car. Please be careful as the northern (better) R trains to Kosice leaves two minutes before the souther (slowest) and both are displayed as a train to Kosice on the departures panel. The IC trains are not that expensive and are definitely worth the money. I would opt for them. Even the second class is very good. And if you manage to get the single seat in the first class, you will definitely feel like a king on a throne. There are four IC connections a day, one called "the fast IC" that left some stations out. It serves only 4 stops between BA and KE compared to 20 stops that are served by R trains. :-)

It was a great trip and, as you say, the food was incredible. And most important, it tasted really good. It was completely fresh. I mean, they have their own kitchen in the restaurant-car. I would love to have this service in the Spanish trains...
That looked like a pleasant way to make the trip on a cold winter day. I hope that the route is patronized well enough for it to continue.
The food in the restaurant car looked better than what one usually sees on a train, even on long routes. Most often it's just prepackaged or, at best, microwaved.
It was ana amazing trip, to be honest. One of the best train trip that I had till date.
Actually, I will be doing it again in a week. Exactly the same route and train. I will record it again and make a video. Hoping for even a better one with the new phone and new editing and recording skills that I think I got in 1 year.

We went to visit the Ice Cathedral in Starý Smokovec, as every year!
This year it's inspired in the Sagrada Familia of Barcelona. It was really nice. I always enjoye this trips a lot. 😊

The breakfast was, by far, the best I had in any way of transport (except on cruises, of course hehe). It was fantastic.
I'm looking to repeat in the ZSSK IC this summer. We'll spend some days in Tatras and for sure we'll go again with this fantastic train.
The food services are provided by different private corporations/chefs so you may get great service in one train and horrible in the other.
Generally, they are really not bad!
Czechoslovakia knew how to do it!
Back then they could make about 40 locomotives for the price of 1 today!

When I travel over to Slovakia from Australia I used the trains from Bratislava to Turcianske Teplice and when I heard the English announcement I thought wow it’s an Australian accent. Love it over there.

never heard of Poprad Tatry, always learning new places..a lot of snow along the way. the views out the window are just amazing, OMG 6:37 is that your plate, dude like how much can you eat, two plates of eggs done differently, two teas, clearly travelling with your partner. we have to put you on a diet soon. never heard of Ruzomberok...loving the time lapse 8:15 , Never heard of Liptovsky Mikulas, very nice Lucas

No te doy un "Me encanta" porque no se puede, pero que auténtica pasada, nunca habia visto un tren asi, tiene toda la pinta de ser muy cómodo, y ese restaurante!!!! Menuda pintaza tiene la comida!!! Ademas con esos paisajes con la nieve y los lagos.... Preciosos!!!

La gracia de un viaje en tren es la experiencia en el mismo. El tren se caracteriza por ser el único medio de transporte terrestre que puede ofrecerte, por ejemplo, un servicio de restaurante mientras ves paisajes diferentes cada segundo... Pues nada, en España se han empeñado y nos han intentado convencer de que el servico restaurante no es útil (no me sirve la bazofia de "servico cafetería" que ponen.
Todos mis amigos que han ido de Interail querrían repetir, así que no lo dudes!

Before, R trains were slower (maximum speed 120 km/h/75mph) and 20 stops, since December 2017 they have a maximum speed of 160 km/h/100 mph and one half less stops (10 stops). But they could use older types of train cars/waggons, especially on Friday, Sunday, Eastern, All Saints Day, Christmas and New Year peaks (Exodus Slovacia Centralis et Orientralis). Older waggons are contructed on speed of 140 km/87,5mph, but the permitted speed is 120 km/h/75mph because of limits of locomotives, tracks. But it is fine, that you can travel from BA to KE by R trains by 160 km/h/75mph (between BA and PU), later on the whole line from BA to ZA (after finishing of "rebuilding" of train tracks between PU and PB and building of 2 new tunnels (Diel and Milochov) on the left side of Váh river and Nosice/Púchov dam (Dam of Youths before). After getting off, you should have recorded departure of the train. Slovak train-drivers are often "greeting" people recording videos by whistle or light ;-)

@@OnBoardHD The answer is yes. The three bed compartments can be booked as first (one bed) or second (two beds shared) the third bed is usually for families.

No, I didn't. But it's always been a project. The problem is the same always... the budget.
The thing is that my final destination is always Bratislava (where my girlfriend lives), that's why to Poprad we go by train.
But, yep, the views during approach must be superb, maybe even better with AirBaltic, as you cross them coming from the north...

when it comes to leg space in the 2nd class, there is enough space only in the first seats on both sides of the car. those seats that have the table in the middle, where seats are facing each other... two average tall persons have problems with leg space.

Sí, los vagones en sí son algo parecido. Sin embargo, como bien dices, el interior no hay color... y el coche restaurante ya.. bueno... mejor ni compararlo.
En aquellos no te pasaba que si entrabas con alta velocidad en un túnel se te taponaban los oídos? Porque con el Arco de aquí, constantemente me ocurre.
Pasa en todos los trenes! jaja Que ocurra más o menos dependerá de lo bien que mantenga la presión el tren en su interior.
Es una aplicación del efecto venturi. La presión dentro del tren disminuye levemente y es lo que hace que se taponen los oídos. :)

Poprad es la ciudad donde está la principal estación de ferrocarril desde donde sale el tren de montaña hasta las Tatry Mountains, las montañas que se ven en el vídeo. Fuimos a disfrutar un día de la nieve y visitar la Catedral de Hielo que todos los años construyen maestros del hielo en un pueblo de las montañas (y que recibe miles de visitantes cada invierno).
Este año, dicha catedral se inspiraba en la Sagrada Familia de Barcelona, así que un motivo más para vistarla. (Esta es la web de la catedral de hielo: www.vt.sk/en/activities/events/tatra-temple-of-ice-20172018/ )

Prefiero un tren que pueda circular a unos 200km/h, que no nos cueste la millonada que está costando el AVE, y sobre todo, con un servicio a bordo bueno de verdad. El restaurante del tren de este vídeo: cocinaban todo en el momento. TODO. En el viaje de vuelta (que subiré en unas semanas) me pedí un schnitzel (una milanesa de toda la vida) y escuche los martillazos a la carne antes de rebozarla. He mirado la cocina del tren y había hornillos, horno, microondas y lavavajillas. Evidentemente, también una nevera.
Además, cada vez que viajo en tren en Eslovaquia (y también en Rep. Checa) percibo una sensación de ambiente familiar en el tren. Es acogedor. Te apetece estar allí. Luego entro en el Alvia... y agggh es desangelante. De verdad, un color verde mustio, todas las paredes color plástico... en fin.
¿Tu que opinas al respecto?
OnBoardHD - Flight Experience Estoy tremendamente de acuerdo contigo, ademas el AVE es un pozo de dinero sin beneficios, y con un servicio a bordo lamentable, sin duda a RENFE le hace falta aprender mucho lo que es dar un servicio de calidad.

Te imaginas quedarte a vivir en alguno de esos pueblecillos de Europa Central? jeje, no sé ve tanto tren de alta velocidad por ahi. Que opinas de que tengamos tantos km en España?
Jaja Pues en uno de esos pueblecitos... vivir de manera habitual no, pero unos días en vacaciones para desconectar abosultamente... pufff... sin duda. De hecho ya hicimos el verano pasado algo así. Durante 4 días nos fuimos a esas mismas montañas, a una especia de casa de turismo rural, y todos los días de trekking a las montañas. Puff! Desconexión total. Este verano repetimos segurísimo. :)

Como buen geógrafo te responderé a todo! ^_^ Yo vivir depende del pueblo pero podría, me encanta la montaña y esas del vídeo tienen muy buena pinta... Sin duda sería toda una experiencia probarlo. Con respecto al tema del AVE, hay reportajes por YT que te muestran el AVE frente a otro trenes en cifras y da miedo. Solo con el AVE a nuestra comunidad nos estamos fulminando una cantidad de pasta irrecuperable. Por no hablar del impacto paisajístico y ecológico. Creo que si la gente supiese realmente como funciona la alta velocidad en España al día siguiente habría una revuelta popular xDDD todo un tema sin duda. Y el servicio como siempre cutrillo, pues nos quieren convencer por las malas que el modelo privatizador yanki es mejor... fin de la cita! ;)
Lo que tenía que pasar era que dejasen entrar competidores privados. En Eslovaquia, Austria y República Checa ya ocurre (hablo de los países que se, seguramente haya muchos más). Y desde que es así el servicio al pasajero sólo ha mejorado y los precios igual, obviamente.
Pero noooo! Aquí mucho AVE y mucha alta velocidad... bueno... así van los AVE, vacíos la mayoría de ellos. 50-60 €uros cuesta un AVE Madrid-Barcelona y no ofrecen nada! Nada de nada! Ni una miserable botella de agua!!. Por ese precio me cojo el avión sin dudarlo un instante...

The pantograph on the locomotive is fighting the ice on the wire to get proper contact. In much colder winter, this can cause huge problems and many trains have to be towed by diesels because the electric locos can´t get proper contact.
Happens to all vehicles using overhead wires.

Minulý týždeň som cestoval na trase Košice - Bratislava - Dunajská Streda a späť a zaprisahal som sa, že vlakom už nikdy viac!
Iba autom alebo lietadlom. V rýchlikoch aj v IC vlakoch sú tvrdé, nepohodlné sedadlá, mal som málo miesta na nohy. Lepšie sa sedí iba v rýchlikovom kupé a na sedadlách ktoré idú za sebou a nie oproti sebe. Rýchliky idú neskutočne pomaly, od 40 do 60 km/h a stoja asi na 30 zastávkach. Som sa čudoval, prečo nestoja v každej dedine.
Pri kúpe lístka na rýchlik v Košiciach dom dostal aj expresnú
rezerváciu miestenky do do vozňa č.4, sedadlo 37 chodba. Niekde za Žilinou
nastúpila jedna pani a povedala mi, že na moje miesto má miestenku. Odišiel som
do vozňa č.7 a sadol som si do kupé č.11 na sedadlo 113. V kupé sa mi cestovalo
lepšie, sedadlá boli pohodlnejšie a mal som viac miesta na nohy, ale po čase sa
vonku zotmelo a ja som si chcel čítať. Zistil som, že svetlo v kupé sa nedá
zapnúť. Svietilo iba slabým, tlmeným svetlom. Potom som zistil, že
svetlo nesvieti ani v ostatných kupé. Ako je to možné v 21. storočí?
IC vlak išiel rýchlejšie, ale zdá sa mi že len na oko. Cesta z Popradu do Košíc trvala
presne 1 hodinu a 5 minút. Na stránke www.zsr.sk je
uvedené, že osobný vlak Os 7810 príde z Košíc do Popradu za 1 hodinu a 51 minút. Rýchlik
R 604 Dargov príde do Popradu za 1 hodinu a 16 minút a pritom stojí na viacerých staniciach.

I went once in the Rychlik and it was quite good. There was a restaurant car and the onboard service was also good. My experience on the Intercity was great.
