- Today we test the Mercury 3 blade Fury in the 23p vs the 24p on a 19 foot bass boat with a Mercury 200 HP Pro XS (4 stroke). We will repeat this test with the boat loaded the same in 60 or so days once the water and temperature cool down to see the impact cooler water and air temp impacts performance and how you might change prop pitches in the winter vs the summer.

Ken, I have a Tempest 23P that had some shine. I had some minor prop damage a few months back, repair nicely, but the shine is gone. Does shine, slickness make a difference? My perception since repair seems like I'm 2 to 3 mph slower.
Alan, my experience is that a prop will never run like a new one. If you think about it when a prop is repaired they generally are cutting metal away (you really can't add metal), so a repaired prop is going to struggle to be as good as a new one. They may add cup to make up for some of the loss of prop surface, but again, just not the same.
@@KenSmithFishing thank you for taking the time and replying to my question.
Ken they don’t take metal away when they repair ,they will weld and fill in the damage and grind it back down and re finish it.
Legends were some nice rigs! Thanks Johnny Morris
I have a P2 with a 200. In cooler months I run a 25p tempest plus and in warmer months I run a 23p tempest plus.
Wow so you can jump 2" in cooler weather....
@@KenSmithFishing yes! On my bass cat 100%
2020 Bass Cat Pantera II 19'1". Two people all our stuff, 43 gal of fuel I have the auxiliary tank. 24 Fury and doing 70.
dang
These new mercs don’t like higher pitched props. There’s a good amount of 250s out there with 23p props on them. I was a marshal for MLF event and quite a few had 23p 3 blades on 250s.
weird isn't it
My merc 115 87’ has a 23p prop and it jumps out the hole great
The 200hp pro xs does not want to rev over 5800rpm, thats what to shoot for on that engine according to my Merc guy.
I'm thinking he is not correct on that one
I'm shopping for a new/used boat and check out a lynx yesterday. Its shocking how much flex that big rod compartment lid has. Felt like a trampoline. I wish they would come out with another boat that had center rod storage. The caracal lids seem to be much more rigid than the lynx... Better design, if I'm going to order a cat that would be the one. Wish they had a 250 horse model in that layout, or had a boat with conventional lids. I'm giving the cats a fair shot, but I think the vexus is calling my name. To bad legend isn't around anymore. I had some gel coat issues with my v20, but other than that they made a really nice boat.
Open the box, a lot of the flex is the thick (huge) gasket around the box to keep it dry
Now you got me wanting to try a 22 Fury on my 1880 Vexus with a 115proXS
I have a Tempest 23P on my Vexus 1880. I like it. But I don't know any better.
@@alanaho4915 same here, but I always curious to see if it can do better.
@@carp121314 I left a comment for Ken regarding shine. Look for it and what do you think?
@@alanaho4915 I had my prop repaired by Ross Props down here in Biloxi, and he did not polish it. I am running a tad slower, 48 vs 50, but I believe water temp might be a factor. I'll ask my prop guy about the polish factor this week and see what his take is.
Guys I just resonded to Alan's original question, don't think the shine is the issue, think its loss of prop surface on repaired props
Like the fuel consumption data coming. Ken what octane fuel and making assumption no ethanol your running?
Actually I have always run 87 octane and no where to get non ethanol around here.
Would love to see some fishing videos.
Rayburn this weekend!!!!
Might want to try a 22 and 23 Tempest.
seems those 22's are hard to find
@@KenSmithFishing Sorry,, meant 22 Fury and 23 Tempest.
I lost 2 mph with a 23p tempest from a 23p fury
I’m going a used 2018 legend v-20, it weighs 1850lbs with a 2 stroke optimax 250. It has a 24 fury 3 what prop would you recommend. Also I think it is still the widest boat on the market for the front deck at 73 inches at the seat hole.
CJ email me and let's get a little more into the details. kensmithfishing@outlook.com
Man do some fishing videos. These boat and prop testing videos were old 20 videos ago. Just my opinion.... I come here to watch fishing, techniques or tracking study info.
Robert with a 24 month old and a 6 month old, and my work going crazy, i'm doing my best. Just really hard to get away from the house for 8-10 hours and fish, and then I'm not out enough to stay on fish...and now I gotta get my hip replaced Monday!

Thanks, you too!
What should I upgrade my prop to I have a stock prop on a 186 champion dc with 150 Yamaha
Hey are you running, what RPM’s are you getting and find out what standard RPM range is for the motor and we can start figuring it out
It tops out at 56-57 5200 gets out of the whole amazing and no chine at all handles like a dream but feel like there’s more in the motor it’s a 98 but only has roughly 400 hrs on it
Ken, I have a 2016 Xpress X19 w/a 200 SHO. I have a 24p FXP on it right now and am turning around 5200 rpm and about 60 mph at WOT. I know I need to drop down a pitch, or maybe two to get the rpm's that motor can generate, but not sure which to buy. Hole shot is great with the 24p and I don't want to lose that with a new prop. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
You need to be Turning way more Rpms, I’d drop to a 23 first, you shouldn’t lose any hole shot
You will get better hole shot and more rpm by going too with less pitch
I was told that 5800 to 6000 RPM is normal on that engine. Empty my 2021 Nitro Z19 PRO runs 70 with me over loaded is 68 add a buddy is 67 this is running the 23 fury. My 195 Charger with 200EFI ran exactly the same speeds and I had 3 of them 1995-1998-2000
My 4 stroke 250 data says up to 6200 is norm
@@KenSmithFishing forgot to add I have the 1:85 to 1 torque master gears
Very interesting. Makes me feel better about my setup! I’m thinking that I’m getting closer!👍👍🎣😊😊
Good!
Fastest ranger I've seen was my buddy 519 with 225 sho with 23 pitch and it runs at 6000rpm 73.4 one guy two guys 71.2 fast for ranger
You'll find guys that tweak them up and run super light that can run up in the 70's, but not gas and livewells full
Owner won’t admit it but that little 19ft’r is beating his guts out.
Actually he said "when it's rough I fish right here"...
Where do u live I have a Alison bassboat
Dallas and house at Rayburn as well
I have a 24 Tempest on my Z7 and I can’t get over 5400 rpms. Any advice on what pitch or prop I should try
I'd try the 23p 3 blade Fury next.
I'm a little surprised at the low pitch props you are settling down on for your BC and for thus boat. I have a 2007 BC Pantera with 200 Opti. Bass and Walleye Boats mag (Dec 2005) tested this rig our with 27P Trophy + (don't recall 3 or 4 blades) fairly empty at 74mph. BC recommended a 26P 4 blade Trophy + for my rig to accommodate tournament loading. With 2 of us and 33ga fuel/ full livewell, 31 batteries, Ultrex, I'm getting decent hole shot and just under 68-69mph. Don't recall rpm at that speed (don't run there much sucks down gas). Would a 200 Pro Xs 4 stroke handle 26P? Doubtful.
Optimax has a lowrange ratio vs the Tq master 1:75. Its all in the gearratios.
What he said!
Makes sense.
Jeff, I have an 08 P2 Dual Console with a 200 Opti and I am running a 26 Trophy Plus 4 blade right now. I have an Ultrex, Mega 360, Livescope, Helix 10, and Garmin 93SV on the bow. I typically run pretty heavy on load and I always have my girlfriend in the boat with me, and often times another passenger. When I did the test drive buying the boat it had an old MG Tour 80 on the bow and no graph, no gear loaded in. Holeshot was instantaneous and it hit 70 in a hurry. With all the added gear and weight on the bow, my holeshot has suffered and top end has dropped, which is completely logical. I am only getting about 5200 rpm now as well, and getting 67 mph out of it still. I am going to try a 24P Trophy this spring to see if I can get the holeshot back and maybe get closer to the 5750 max rpm. Should note, I have lithium batteries in there too, and I know Cats in our age range prefer to have lead acid batteries to better balance the load. All a game of give and take. I will try to report back once I get a chance to try out a prop or two when the ice thaws.
must be a heavy boat i got 70 mph with 4 blade prop on a 19 foot boat with 175 hp
an old style ranger spin off 19 ft over a 21 Triton.... LOL .
true that
Why is that boat so slow? A 19 footer with a 200 should be much quicker than that. I friend of mine had a 19.5 foot Triton TR196 with a 94" beam and with a 200 optimax, dual power poles and 4 batteries in the back it woud run over 70 MPH.
slow boat
