  • Part 3 of fall 2021 prop testing. Over the next few months we are going to do some prop testing that should indicate best props to start with if you are running a Mercury 250 Pro XS 4 stroke on wide body bass boats, that should include the Bass Cat Lynx, the new Puma STS, Phoenix 921 or PHX, Ranger 520 and 521 L, C, R, Vexus, Nitro, Charger and possibly even Skeeter boats and you might even find some of this translates to the Bass Cat Cougar, Eyra or Jaguar. Over the course of the next few weeks we will run Tempest Plus in 23, 24 and 25 pitch. Fury 3 in 23, 24 and 25 pitch, Fury 4 in 24 and 25 pitch and whatever Bravo or other props we can get our hands on. We will be reviewing slippage, that is prop slip at speed and also hole shot. As well as how to install and remove prop vent plugs, and how to remove and install the rubber press in hubs that run on the Torque Master lower unit.
    In this video today we try the 23 pitch Mercury Fury 3 blade, the 25p Mercury fury 4 blade and a 25p 3 blade Tempest Plus and look at the slippage numbers compared to the 24 pitch 3 blade Fury I have been running. We also talk a little about the rev limiter on the Mercury 250 Pro XS 4 stroke motor.
    We will repeat this test with the boat loaded the same in 60 or so days once the water and temperature cool down to see the impact cooler water and air temp impacts performance and how you might change prop pitches in the winter vs the summer.

    Hi Ken.... when you are putting it on plane with any of these props do you have a specific height on jackplate where the boat comes out of the hole better....??? I have a Ranger 521L with a 23 Fury...... and it jumps out of the hole with the plate high (at 20)..... and yet get best top end performance with the plate at 2-3 and nearly full trim..... This was loaded down heavy with full wells and fuel and full compartments.... A lot of trial and error getting the plate and trim right for the conditions.... with each individual prop test....

      @KenSmithFishing  2 года назад +1

      Kendall on my Lynx to a large degree I am leaving the jack plate about 2" up, that seems to give me great hole shot and the best on the top end, so I really don't have to monkey with it much

    Ken, I've tested every prop that mercury makes and a handful of different boats and brands, and to date, the Bravo 1 XS has been the fasted AND had the best hole-shot on every single boat. It also tracks and handles the better than most in corners, rough water, etc. An extremely close second place, and honestly what I personally would buy is a Ballistic 4 blade made by Michigan wheel. Caveats are that the Bravo's are known to sling ears and can be difficult to size properly on the first try since they run a little soft (e.g. 27" Bravo roughly equivalent to a 25" Fury). I know a lot folks have Bravos that have had no problems, but I just cracked an ear on one in less than 1 year of use. The cons to the Ballistic is that you don't have near the size selections to choose from, and they don't have an option for PVS holes from the factory. I have a 25" Ballistic 4-blade that I paid the local prop guy to add PVS holes to and a little tip cup and it is hands down my favorite prop that I've run. I can literally pull skiers with my old Champion with that prop, and this past Saturday the exact same prop pushed the 20'7" Gambler test boat 84 mph with a bone stock 250 SHO. By the way that's 1 mph faster than the 27" Yamaha T2 I ran on the same day. Anyway, I just wanted to share my experience with you and your followers. I haven't forgotten about the Gambler video either!! I'll keep you posted on that front.

      Heath are you buying the prop from Mercury, or getting the lab finished from Mercury Racing? By the way still waiting on you to bring me a new Gambler to run.....

      @@KenSmithFishing I haven't forgotten about you buddy! Things are just hectic right now, and we have a handful of boats to finish before the one I can bring to let you check out. We're just buying the regular XS props from Mercury, NOT the lab-finished versions from Mercury Racing.

    I run a 24 tempest on my 295 stratos with 200 optimax and its has out preformed all others on ny boat. I tried the 24 fury 3 blade and 23 tempest a few months ago and neither were as good overall at the 24 tempest. Love your vidoes. I been fishing and running bass boats my whole life and i still learn something new in every video you make.

    See if you can find a Turbo (Precision Propeller) TXP 3 blade in a 23 or 24 pitch. Its a long barrel high rake 3 blade that will lift the entire boat. Yamaha owns them now and they are difficult to find but I think you’d be surprised at how well they run. My boat picked up 3 MPH when I switched from a Yamaha T2 to the TXP.

      @@KenSmithFishing I am running a Yamaha SHO but the prop has the universal square bore hub so you can use a hub kit to adapt it to any brand outboard. You can use the same hub kit you are using on the Fury.

    Try a Bravo 1 XS 25 if you can find one, I think you'll like the handling, but you're right, the Fury 3 is very good overall.
    I wouldn't bother with the Bravo FS or anything but an XS. The XS is for bass boats, good overall lift for heavy loads. And you need the venting.

    Wouldn't running a prop that keeps your max rpm below the rated 6200rpm be better for the life of the engine?

    • @KenSmithFishing

      Sam, my last boat, when I sold it, had 220 hours on it and 1.7 hours were at WOT, so less than 5 hours wide open, so I really don't think that has an impact in the big picture.

    Wow Ken, I run a bigger prop with a little less rpms. I give up a little hole shot for less money to save a little gas to go a little further. It must be nice not to worry about gas. Just saying since the democrats have taken over its a hundred dollar bill to go fishing nowadays. I live an hour from Kentucky lake.

      I live 45 minutes from 3 different lakes and gas prices suck. 2.99 with a 40 gallon tank and a truck to pull it. Averaging over $30 more per trip now then when we had a real President.
