After quitting his job as an HR Consultant, Saurabh Sengupta, an IIT Delhi and IIM Indore alumnus, joined Zomato (then Foodie Bay) in a Sales role where his job description was as succinct as - "Dhandhaa khadaa karna hai." In over half a decade that he spent at Zomato, Saurabh did exactly that, going from doing door-to-door sales to becoming the VP of Sales, eventually parting with the organisation to establish his own venture.
In yet another candid talk at the InsideIIM Pre-MBA Social Season 3, Saurabh takes us through his journey of making a lifestyle change and joining a start-up, after realising he couldn't deal with the office politics in big companies and the perfunctory nature of the job. Through hilarious and thought-provoking anecdotes, he takes us through his journey of multiple rejections and explains how everyone, after 10-12 years, automatically becomes a salesperson. He also explains why 'Sales' has a negative connotation attached to it, and why there exists a stereotype around the role.
Saurabh's forthright way of bringing out harsh truths makes this video a must-watch for MBA students and aspirants eager to know more about life after an MBA.

@@InsideIIMKonversations This is nothing insightful. Big motivational talks are only good for gaining popularity. The reality is that IIT, IIM tag is absolute godlike (only in India) and that makesthe rest of us useless.

This man knows the reality of the life and the core root of sales process . after seeing the video reminds me the all . H. K Gupta
This is ridiculous
Sales requires
1. Planning
2.Strategy
3.Intelligence
A sharp, intelligent ,educated man can always do well
The reality is only if you an IIT or IIM tag, atleaat you will be eligible to attend the interviews, let alone getting the job. College really matters and that is the truth.
Exactly. Inside college,it's all your hardwork but man iit tag fetches you good companies on campus.

Fact is if you're hardworking, obedient you can clear the exams but you need to be passionate enough to continue with the job
Can relate totally for sales ..one can never have ego as sales , true there are views against sales but don't forget they get the revenue for company..lot of learning here as well
The bitter truth is that : local trains aur street par jitne different type of customers ka knowledge milega, woh knowledge BSchool me nahi milta
Absolutely right brother 👍
true ...so true

the bitter truth is saabkonpata hai yae baat
This is called true market research
This conversation was precious. Everything he said is raw truth.
I can relate with this guy that is why I do watch this video again and again. You know this is the perfect mix of Desi and intelligence with no-nonsense.
'Where do you see yourself in 5 years'. Truth served in a funny way. Best learning experience in years.
Gosh, he completely shares his experience in Hindi. Thought IIM/IIT guy would intersperse angresi .
Yea
Cause he was in sales and recruitment 😂😂🤣
it's IIT/IIM , not Oxford university .
as he said in the end...aukaat pta chal gyi thi :P no offence
Why is there something wrong with english?
This guy is absolutely true about sales. One of the few interviews which had learning and some fun elements. Only thing though is that you need to know your own personality. Like he said he doesn't have a filter, good with people, pleasing personality. If you feel you have strong technical skills then thats also good at its own place.
Love this guy! Super funny, knowledgeable, and individualistic! Honest too! Please bring more people like him. :)
I think that sales and analytics are one of the 2 most important functions to have some sort of experience early in your career. If you don't understand data, you can't understand the input drivers that are impacting the business/ metric/ function . Also, with data about everything being gathered at this age, using the correct data and separating the noise becomes critical. The only good way to improve is open the excel sheet and do insights after insights for years on every sort of data from operations, support, product, pricing etc which is a forcing function for an analyst/ recently joined managers in these spaces. A person who has done it for 4-5 years already has ~1-1.5k scenarios analyzed ( huge competitive advantage as the base of all discussion/ meetings is data and connecting dots becomes faster and easier). However, you can have all the data in the world supporting your hypothesis and your ideas, you need to articulate, convince and influence leaders and stakeholders which is where I feel sales or even ops experience becomes very critical. Unfortunately, I don't have sales experience ( inherently also not good at these things) and do feel its impact in some form or another.
Only the person who can sell, can know the reality of life... and he can do anything.
Probably the best interview in this channel.. great job Saurabh sir..
Ye video mein last 1 saal se periodically dekhta rehta hun....inspirational

nice to c a better host. one who actually looks into the eyes while questioning
People criticize that road momo seller(who makes lakhs of money), they crictise him saying that he is gwar, dignified, and doesn't deserve that much money. But after years of experience they realise that they're too doing the same, selling selling selling, but this time they're selling themselves as a service which is way more worse
What he spoke was just so true..
I wish other realise this too before getting too late.

Awesome, I'm into Sales ,MBA and Working in sales is building relationships.
So true... in the end, everyone becomes a sales or marketing person....even in relationships...I think every relation in this world is economic-based. Like, A Mother is executing her agenda secretly without catching her son's notice...women are great sales/marketing persons be it mother, wife, sister, etc at the house..they get things done at any cost by men - by hook or crook.

Giving sermons on a platform is easy but doing it actually is all together a different ballgame.
Weather it's a startup or a large corporate both suffer from the disease called stereo typing.
As Saurabh said if 1 doesn't have the pressure of earning money 1 should join a startup. Well I'll ask if he had the pressure of earning money & he wasn't a IIM graduate .
Really enlightening. Amazing series 😃
Glad you liked it, Ria!
In the Telugu states particularly why so much importance is given to still IITs. However, this is an exception.
When it comes to sales and marketing, It does a lot of help. The business of all the coaching centers in India is just one example of making lot of money and fooling people in name of IIT and IIM.
Sales is the soul of business. No sales No business.
Good open minded guy who can become a great business leader !!!
Who penetrate into IIT and IIM, they must have done their hard work. No doubt they are intelligent.
But fact is, in majority today its became a tag only.
Quantum of bringing new technology is way to lesser than production of IITians.
Most of them enter corporates to earn a lot. Its not their mistake, they find the opportunity to earn and they grab.
Actually country like India doesn't spend too much on research and all. We are well known as Importers for lot of developed countries.
And yeah he is right, in corporate everyone is a sales man.
Even when we give interview, we actually trying to sell our knowledge, experience, skills etc.
For a good programmer some might think that IQ plays a good role there, to write their own algorithm and write more efficient code.
For a sales person is there any such quality that make them more successful, in short can everyone become good sales person if they try ?
Thank you for this show. Keep running.

Misleading title, IIT IIM Tag matters when you are doing sales, eg. With that tag you could get into the best sales jobs country can offer, compared to someone who gets it after graduation it will not be of just cold calling but you will have good inquiries, so in short getting into a good sales role at a good firm, the tag matters and education matters

Great stuff 👍👍
Agree to some extent , but statement can be misleading, here is how
1. Before making sales you need to land a job, where degree do help
2. Before & After call you need lot of info, and you can always rely on the alumni network
3. Sales needs high degree of confidence and these institutions do prepare you for that
Most important, everything can be done without degrees, leave apart the prestigious alumni like IIT and IIM, it’s just the effort required to make the cut will be lot more and success chance lot less
It's true that degrees can be beneficial in certain aspects of sales, such as job opportunities and networking, it's important to note that success in sales is not solely dependent on having a degree.
Ultimately, it's about finding the right balance between formal education and other avenues for learning and growth in the field of sales.
Like this person.. Bring such type of person
