Excellent video Kevin! The train is amazing to watch and the landscape is beautiful. Do you live around Washington, if so you are a blessed person. Thank you for sharing this great video. I live in Ohio and never have been to the state of Washington.
Got any idea of why BNSF takes their full coal wagons down to the Columbia Gorge to Portland then up to Seattle for loading? Never seen a loaded coal train on the Columbia Sub!
I've heard it has something to do with gradient over the Columbia River Sub and the Scenic Sub verses the Fallbridge and Seattle Subs which are flatter. Thanks for watching Ken. 😊
Those coal cars you are talking about are taken to Longview, MT'd at Longview and the coal is shipped overseas to China I understand. These MTs are then hauled to Seattle and brought down by way over Stampede pass and on to Pasco then back to Wyoming where they are loaded and shipped back again. These coal cars, 125 to a train, can be seen going thru the Ellensburg canyon now and then. The ones I have seen usually have 2 units on the head end and 2 dpus on the rear of the train.
@@kens.213 I am not sure of this Columbia Sub you are talking about. The MT coal trains leave Longview, head to Seattle then over Stampede Pass. The trains follow the track thru Cle Elum, crew change at Ellensburg then follow the Yakima River canyon thru Selah and onto Pasco. The reason here is that the BNSF does not want these MT trains over loading their main line, Seattle to Spokane by way of Wenatchee. The main line from Seattle is HOT all the time with the loaded various trains plus Amtrak runs thru the Cascade tunnel.
@@robertbowman3406 This video (Kevin's) was taken on the Columbia Sub. The Columbia Sub is the main line for BNSF from Wenatchee to Spokane. Until it gets to Ritzville there are no other connecting subs. So how do the coal empties get on the Columbia Sub? Seems obvious that they go through the Cascade Tunnel on the Scenic Sub.
@@kens.213 These coal empties do not end up on the Columbia Sub. They are hauled thru Stampede Pass, thru Ellensburg, thru Yakima then to Pasco. I would have to assume that the coal mts are then hauled to Spokane.
Amazing rail video, lovely images with trains and great places! Good work! Thumbs Up
