Love playing Latin percussion and steel pan coming from a drum kit background. It give me an advantage of having more gigs. There’s a timbale method book I found on Amazon I have that is very helpful for starting out on timbale. Great job.

Rookie here. I just bought a gorgeous used set of Afro Timbales, made by Ludwig in the early 90's, in which the shell is gold plated. I was a little worried about scratching and dinging up the shell when striking with sticks. I'm wondering if they make striking pads or something for higher end timbales to not scruff up the shell? Thanks in advance and much love!

You can knock your hearing out with timbales, rim-shots are destructive. Then you'll have a souvenir, tinnitus.
Young people, don't forget to protect your ears and think about the other players.
What do you advise for salsa, steel, or brass ? Or is it only a matter of taste ? Do they come in maple shells (joking) ?
