So insensitive! Just because parents split doesn't mean they don't love their children. Sometimes they love their children too much to expose them to a life of pain watching their parents fight in their home life! I'm just kidding... That was a clever punch! Jon is very clever and I have a huge appreciation for deadpan
If we ever misplaced a lost tooth, my mom would have us write a note to the Tooth Fairy explaining why it wasn't under the pillow. And what do you know, she would take the note and leave money! Such a kind and understanding fairy
"There's nothing spooky about the tooth fairy" I don't know if anyone finds a small creature who enters your room at night to take your teeth so they can do god knows what with them very adorable or inconspicuous. At least not anyone who currently resides outside of an insane asylum.

To put this in perspective, an average pizza in Switzerland costs between about 25-30 CHF (I know it's a bit of an odd measure, but one of the clearest examples of comparable commodity-wealth I could think of). So 7.20 CHF, being roughly a third to fourth of that would, considering Dutch prices, equate to about €3-4, or between $3.5-5. Still on the upper end, but certainly not as high as suggested in the video. Two other things to keep in mind is that the Swiss, on average, or probably one of the wealthiest nations in the world with the highest incomes, I'd wager to say, in Europe, and that Zürich-canton is, to my understanding, the wealthiest part of Switzerland...
one time my dad couldn’t find my tooth under the pillow but he left money anyway. The next day I found the money, and also recovered the tooth. So he had no other option but to put a second sum of cash under my pillow the next night because I insisted on placing the tooth under my pillow again.

My parents made me say that to Craw, not God... - Here is a bony one give me a golden one According to my grandma, the logic behind it is that craws sometimes collect all sorts of random things including money and jewelry, so basically you are asking for unfair trade. The weirdest thing is that I didn't get anything growing up. I have five siblings, and only the two oldest got stuff, even when the rest of us were pulling our baby teeth left and right. My older siblings told me, and my two younger ones that the Tooth Fairy wasn't real, along with every other childhood fairy tale. By the way, this was a very awesome video. When I lost a baby tooth, the tooth fairy (aka my dad lol) would give me one dollar, and usually some scribbles on the george washington’s face. For example, earrings or lipstick or a funny hat! It was really fun to collect them over time and eventually I had a stack of ones with fun faces :)
Awesome video Jon! Seriously what a creative topic to choose!!! My sister and I received a gold dollar coin or a silver dollar. That way it was a small sum that my parents could afford, but it felt extra special and 'magical'. My sister does it with her children now. I love this tradition.
Loved this episode!!! Growing up in Nigeria, it was so interesting to hear you mention the different tooth fairy related traditions and superstitions across the globe. As I little girl, though we didn't have a tooth fairy to believe in, I grew up knowing about her by watching western tv shows but never really believed in her personally. Ironically, I had older brothers and uncles who would instead tease me and tell me all sorts of stories. These stories varied from how if my teeth were feeling loose and I didn't let them fall out, rats would visit me at night to take them out of my mouth, to how if I threw my baby teeth unto the roof of our house, the rats would leave me money the next morning. I obviously never got any type of payment for any of my lost teeth and I remember being skeptical of these stories even then but hey, who doesn't love the idea of free money right? (communists probably, but I digress). It was just so fascinating to hear that other countries all over the world have similar takes on the 'tooth fairy'. Also, you know how I said they told me the rats would go for any loose teeth in your mouth, they meant ANY teeth. Baby teeth or adult, no one was safe. Haha, guess that was their way of making sure I didn't let my dental hygiene go down the toilet. Sorry for the rant. Just felt like sharing ^_^'
When I was little and lost a tooth in the winter, with plastic over the windows to keep cold air out, I swear I saw a fairy shape pulling through the plastic. Terrifying
My parents got creative with the tooth fairy myth. I remember one night walking up to fairy dust (glitter) on my pillow. There was even some sprinkled on my Tinkerbell doll's nose. Mom was so excited pointing out how the Tooth Fairy gave my doll a kiss. XD
“There’s nothing scary about the tooth fairy “ Me: except the fact that this lady breaks into my house and takes my teeth for some reason I don’t really want to know.
I once lost three teeth in one day One was impacted, one broke in half, the other was pushing my adult tooth into my sines cavity. I got 50 bucks for that pain
I remember trying to catch out the tooth fairy. So I hid my tooth in its box in a little toy horse trailer on my bedside table, thinking she'd have to go looking for it and that'd be enough time for me to see her. Instead I caught my parents shout whispering at each other about how they couldn't find it. I cried myself to sleep afterwards.
In my case my parents would tell me that the little mouse or “El Ratoncito” would leave me a dollar if I put my teeth under my pillow during the night.😁👍🏼
When you started talking about Swedish kids and what they on average got from their parents I was like “Yay! I’m Swedish” and then I realized that he had just confused Swedish with Swiss.😢
In Swiss and Italy we had the tooth mouse. I remember back in the '80s leaving my theet on the nightstand so that the "small mouse" could come and get it. By the was he always brought the equivalent on 1usd or less 😁
I live in Australia and when I was little I would put my tooth in a glass of cold water and sit it on my bed side for the tooth fairy to swim down and get it 😂
Very interesting video. In Malta, before the tooth fairy took over, we used to put out baby teeth in the soil of a potted plant in the hope of a good harvest/fertility of the child when they come of age.
My oldest charged the tooth fairy (ME) 10 dollars once. Shocked me at how high I had to pay But loved that he kept 5 for himself. And split the other half between his two siblings
Hi, Jon, I enjoy all your origin stories, is really a delight. By the way here in Mexico in the north we use the Tooth Fairy tradition also but in the center and south of the country they let the teeth to El Ratón Perez (The Perez Mouse) under the pillow, the same one that in other countries as in Spain or south America is known as The Little Mouse Perez, in France is La Petite Souris (the little mouse), in Italy is Topolino, Topino (llitle mouse) or Fatina (little fairy), in some places of Spain also is know as The Little Angel as well as The Little Rat. The most probable origin of the little mouse tradition and its connection with a fairy comes from an 18th century (circa 1690) French tale by Marie-Catherine le Jumelle de Barneville, the Baroness d'Aulnoy: La Bonne Petite Souris (The Good Little Mouse), in Spain was well known as The Little Mouse Perez even before1884, because in that year was used as a reference in a novel set in 1868.
i'm going to have to watch the rest of this episode tomorrow 🤣 I can't stop laughing at the Swiss/Swede mixup--especially because it is immediately followed by "NOW, before you make the same mistake I did..." anyway, love the show 💛💙
My dad was in charge of teeth retrieval. My mom told us he was the tooth fairy and put a pink tutu and wings in his closet to mess with us. Dad was not a night owl so our payment could vary from $1 all the way up to a mistaken $50 that he let me "keep" but also "let" me pay for the snack portion of the groceries that day , sly shit.
I remember my older sister told me when I was a child she seen my tooth fairy above my bed. She described her in great detail too! I believed her until I was about 13 years old lol
Uncle: *gives child money* African mother: I will keep the money for him. African child: Mummy can I have my money- African mother: What money? Did you give me money? Are you paying for the bills? My friend go and sleep. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. This happens but it's all in good fun cuz there's really nothing we're doing with the money
Idk I always knew about the tooth fairy but we just never "did that" in our country. Though interestingly my mother specifically and no one else made up other versions of the tooth fairy except instead of teeth it was for stopping me from using diapers and pacifiers, cause I actually took a long time to stop using them. The funny thing with diapers specifically is that it wasn't that I would piss myself or whatever I knew how to control it, I just didn't want to use the toilet cause I was used to the diaper xD. There was a period where I would want to use the bathroom so I would ask my mum to give me a diaper... I was a weird little one (and still kinda am)
"her parents split up, so I won in the end" 😂😂😂 I was not prepared for that and probably laughed wayyyy too hard. Old video or not, that's gold *chef kiss* 😂
I've been watching these videos for a while now and I think they're really well researched, I would love to see "the green ribbon" for one of your origin videos
*read the title* *Have sudden flashback about the Tooth Fairy from Rise of the Guardian* Edit: In my country, we buried our baby teeth. Why? Because they already served their purpose and need to be return back to earth. Kinda like disposing a dead body. Mainly we buried those baby teeth next to plants or trees. I remember making little graves for my baby teeth and thanking them for being a part of me and help me chew. It's a weird tradition but it is my childhood.
I remember my dad was always the "tooth fairy" and would usually give me one dollar, but this one time he mixed up a $20 bill with a one dollar and I was so happy and felt so lucky. Then when I grew up my dad told me he never meant to put that much under the pillow, but never had the heart to take it back, so he just let me keep it 😂
I used to get a Dime per tooth... >.> Born in 1985, so lost teeth mainly in the early 90s And some of the Art you have here shows some GORGEOUS Tooth Fairies!
I was just thinking about, you should do Little Jack Horner and Georgie Porgie Tooth Fairy story, I tried to trap her, figuring if she was real the trap would work. If fake there would be nothing. but I had to be sure to not tell my parents or they would pretend the trap worked So I hid my tooth in a cage that had lizards in it.

It’s a dutch tradition too called “tandenfee” but most dutch kids grow up knowing its their parents doing it. It’s usually €1 and you mostly keep on doing it till you’ve changed all your babyteeth.
I'm from the Netherlands, but my parents did have the tooth fairy come by when I was a kid, back in the early 80s. Never got money, though, but I would get a small gift, like a Smurf-figurine, a simple Lego-kit, etc.

Well obviously, you didnt say say please.
My parents made me say that to Craw, not God... - Here is a bony one give me a golden one

In Some South African traditions we also have a “tooth mouse” (tandemuis) that is pretty much the same as the tooth fairy.
In Rise of the Guardians, they show a mouse working with her; so that’s super cool.
that is way cuter than the fairy thing. I love it
That´s really cute
My mom told me to put the tooth in a shoe by my bed instead of under my pillow and my dad always wrote notes from the tooth mouse, he wrote very small on a tiny piece of paper.
I want to know who is giving their children 20$ for a tooth because that is just insane
i think my parents gave me a $20 once because that was the smallest dollar the had at the time
A kid I nannied got $20 for a tooth once, but that’s because his dad couldn’t see what kind of bill he was getting out of his wallet, lol

In South Africa, we have a thing called the "tande muis" basically, a tooth mouse. We know about the tooth fairy, but prefer our tooth mouse

I gave my children a gold dollar. They still have a few.
Interesting
When I was little and lost a tooth in the winter, with plastic over the windows to keep cold air out, I swear I saw a fairy shape pulling through the plastic. Terrifying
My parents got creative with the tooth fairy myth. I remember one night walking up to fairy dust (glitter) on my pillow. There was even some sprinkled on my Tinkerbell doll's nose. Mom was so excited pointing out how the Tooth Fairy gave my doll a kiss. XD

Mouse only left me a quarter per tooth
When you started talking about Swedish kids and what they on average got from their parents I was like “Yay! I’m Swedish” and then I realized that he had just confused Swedish with Swiss.😢

I got so confused when he started talking about "7.2 swiss francs"

In Swiss and Italy we had the tooth mouse. I remember back in the '80s leaving my theet on the nightstand so that the "small mouse" could come and get it. By the was he always brought the equivalent on 1usd or less 😁
I live in Australia and when I was little I would put my tooth in a glass of cold water and sit it on my bed side for the tooth fairy to swim down and get it 😂

In Malta, before the tooth fairy took over, we used to put out baby teeth in the soil of a potted plant in the hope of a good harvest/fertility of the child when they come of age.

The most probable origin of the little mouse tradition and its connection with a fairy comes from an 18th century (circa 1690) French tale by Marie-Catherine le Jumelle de Barneville, the Baroness d'Aulnoy: La Bonne Petite Souris (The Good Little Mouse), in Spain was well known as The Little Mouse Perez even before1884, because in that year was used as a reference in a novel set in 1868.
i'm going to have to watch the rest of this episode tomorrow 🤣 I can't stop laughing at the Swiss/Swede mixup--especially because it is immediately followed by "NOW, before you make the same mistake I did..."
anyway, love the show 💛💙
My version:
The tooth fairy is just grocery shopping 🤣
My dad was in charge of teeth retrieval. My mom told us he was the tooth fairy and put a pink tutu and wings in his closet to mess with us. Dad was not a night owl so our payment could vary from $1 all the way up to a mistaken $50 that he let me "keep" but also "let" me pay for the snack portion of the groceries that day , sly shit.
I remember my older sister told me when I was a child she seen my tooth fairy above my bed. She described her in great detail too! I believed her until I was about 13 years old lol
What if I STILL believe?
Imagine what the origin story of The Virginity Fairy is like.
