that couple dancing really hit me. the sheer grace and intimacy of their dance said to me that it was as natural to them as breathing and they were one. the singer absolutely crushing it helped too, because she clearly felt it in her bones. you can always hear when a singer has a piece of music in their heart

I will always be amazed how someone can have such an accent talking, but when they sing a song in another language it becomes natural. I absolutely love seeing other cultures interact with each other. Just people being people❤️.
It has to do with how the vowels are elongated and open when a person sings, so they technically sound more "american". Cool stuff!

This girl said she'd been singing 11 years and still gets nervous. She sung beautifully, clear, professional even. One of THE best I've seen without doubt. Everything came together and then Reggie: he was like the Cherry on the cake.

This was awesome! My husband recently passed away & this song just pulled me in . Little sad, but felt good at same time. Thanks so much for singing it. We would not have been singing it, we would have been the dancers in the background… we were both dancers & met at a dance studio 48 years ago.

I found myself with tears streaming. This was so beautiful. Her voice, her friends supporting her, and the freedom of the dancers just overwhelmingly embraced my heart. I am a geek for romance. If I had the courage I would break out in dance with a lover on the streets-like an old movie. Devanshi has so much talent--brains and a voice. Wishing her much success in her studies. Well she's been singing 11 years she said so she's probably had quite a bit of training, which will include learning the way pop singers usually pronounce stuff. Of course you don't have to sing that way though, plenty of songs around where the singers use more natural accents, especially in less "formal" styles like folk or punk or country etc.

This was a beautiful performance and the dancers added so much joy. I do have a question that has always puzzled me. Where do accents go when people sing? Just wondering if anybody has an answer.
Yes, good question. Although she did pronounce "with" as "wit". The only sign of her not being a native English speaker.
I'd like to try to answer this in a few ways.
It's not that the accent goes away when someone sings. It's that the accent changes.
It's very common for people to sing in a different accent than the one they speak in, even if the song is in their native language. The accent that a person sings in is part of the style of the song. So when a person commits to learn that style of singing, they will naturally also take on the accent of the song while singing it. You'll notice this particularly when people from the US sing pop songs. They will almost always drop the last "g" in an "-ing" word (like "Dancin' in the dark"), but those same people will never do that when speaking (unless they are speaking informally, have a southern US accent, or AAVE accent).
The other thing is that singing is usually a lot slower than talking. This makes it easier to sing in a different accent than the one you speak in. You just have more time to move your mouth and create the sounds of the accent of the song.
Something else to consider is that a lot of Indians have English as either their first language, or a language they learned right beside their native Indian languages (as opposed to something they learned later in life). Indian accents for English are just as established in India as Australian accents are in Australia and Nigerian accents in Nigeria and Scottish accents in Scotland. So the Indian accent is distinct in that way from many other bilingual accents, in that they are often times not borrowing sounds from their Native language to speak English (like most other ESL people do). They are simply speaking the form of English that exists in India. Some Indians who speak this way are perfectly capable of imitating US accents, the same way a northern US person can probably imitate a southern US accent or a British accent. Of course, much easier to do when doing this in a song!
But more than taking on the accent, the beautiful thing that happens when someone sings is that they often also take on the emotions of the song they are singing. They feel what the words and melody are communicating, and you can see this in them when they sing. This really makes the song like a time capsule for feelings we all have felt at some point in our lives, something we can all open up and share with each other any time, just by playing or singing a song. It really speaks to the fact that music is truly the great connector for us all!
