Double clicking the little icon on the layer doesn't open the camera raw window on CS3 for JPEGs, it just opens the same picture again but not as a smart object (so you have both smart object and non smart object version open). Works for RAW files though. Also, I don't seem to have an 'Open in Camera Raw' open when I right click. Hmm.

does smart objects use more space? i usually open image and save as tiff.

Just hold alt when doing levels to see where your losing parts of the image...
