- Well…you can’t win all of the time. The lads were asked to name one tartan they had as a kilt which they later hated, or just got bored with, or realized was NOT the right choice. Rocky’s story is by far the best of the three!
Tartans:
Rocky: MacDonald Clanranald Muted

Bought a Black Watch as my first modern kilt - an eBay special that fitted perfectly the first time I wore it.... then I lost some weight - so I literally wore it once! I default to my feilidh-mór in family colours - a guaranteed fit every time!
My first tartan was Grey Watch. Despite wanting to wear a kilt, I didn't want anything too bright/colorful that would garner much attention… as if that makes any sense. Now I enjoy being a “peacock”, and honestly regret buying such a subdued tartan
Oooh, my question gets featured. 😁
And for me, under Ukrainian Skies is that tartan for me. Worn it a handful of times, might sell it, or take it apart and use it for crafting.
I'm wondering whether Rocky can do a video without having a drink in his hand? I don't believe I've seen one yet where he is drinkless. He must store all his kilt knowledge in the liquids he consumes during the videos. Must be a good elixir because I've learned a lot from this channel. Cheers.
The kilt/tartan I regret buying is that stupid black and white one that every other MFer wears at Renaissance festivals.
Very happy I invested in a proper great kilt.
I wanted Giant’s Causeway for so long. When it finally arrived I looked at it and thought, “This isn’t for me.” I wore it a couple times and then sold it.
Giant's Causeway is actually my dream tartan 😅
That’s a really great question!
Rocky I want your polo shirt!!! 🤪🤪🤪
Here's a question, what kind of shirt is Ian wearing and where can I find that? Two questions, yes. But nonetheless, cool shirt and I need one in my closet!
i regret getting the cheap acrylic kilts. lol.
My first kilt/only kilt at time of typing: MacLeod of Harris. I thought I had some familial connection to that clan because my mum's maiden name is Harris. I didn't realise the "of" in the tartan registry meant landownership, meaning MacLeod who owned the Isle of Harris. Turns out we're actually descended from the *Herries sept of Clan Maxwell.
I regret the cheap kilts I bought off amazon before I knew better.
You're not going to like this answer... American Heritage. It just doesn't work on me at all. That is one thing I hate about buying kilts is that you can love a tartan, pay a lot of money for it, then discover it doesn't work on you.
I'm going to have to say my clan tartan , Ancient Buchanan. It's a pretty enough tartan, and the kilt is beautifully made of 16 ounce Locharron wool. It's just too loud for me (even in the ancient palette). .On top of that I bought it 18 years ago, and with age I'm starting to lose a little height and it just seems a little too long now.
My favorite kilt was my first band kilt, an ancient Ogilvy hunting tartan. I think it had naturally faded because I don't see anything listed as ancient hunting Ogilvy online that matches its grayish tones.
+USAKiltsOfficial *Thanks for the list o' fails.* I've a sett specification for a "rainbow" flanked by white and dark-brown "lands," wherein I actually had to _reduce_ the number o' shades to fit Tartan convention - the Scottish Register of Tartans doesn't have codes for chartreuse, teal, or indigo. Have yet to weave it.
I've got Scottish ancestry, apparently my family roots came from Aberdeen but with no formal name attachment that I can find. I have wanted to embrace my Scottish heritage in a way that I could be proud of, but of not having a name I have left kilt-buying out of my pursuit. I enjoy the Scottish festivals and would love to show my kilt pride. But I do not want to be that guy who just buys a kilt that is associated with a clan that I do not belong to. What can I do? My mother said we were Campbell, but not know which clan, I refused to buy any one of them; however, I am partial to Argyll. I do like Black Watch too, but again, without knowing more of my former Scottish ancestry, I remain Kiltless.
FWIW I'm Scottish and my family has no tartan. I wear a district tartan for where my family comes from but there's lots of tartans that are universal and can be worn by anyone - Black Watch, Hunting Stewart, Royal Stuart nowadays, Dress Gordon, more modern ones like Flower of Scotland. If your family are indeed Campbells then I recommend just going with the more general Argyll one
The Clan Gordon is recognized as the tartan of Aberdeenshire
My question is why would you wear a kilt your not associated with in some way. I get if your not at all Scottish. But if you are, why wouldn't you wear your clan's colors?
0:40 Pretty sure thats MacDonald's...
It's not.
He said it’s County Antrim Crest.
If you consider who the earls of Antrim were, you might expect at least a bit of MacDonald influence on the tartan design.
