They encourage customers to sign up "for the discount," which IMO is one of the biggest examples of it being a pyramid scheme. If it weren't, wouldn't you want to keep those people as CUSTOMERS? Because businesses need customers? But nope, sign up to be a distributor, because pyramid schemes need members, not customers.

I’m a non-confrontational person, but I answer the door with my dog at my side and no stranger is getting in without a warrant. I had to pick up the phone to call the police to get him to leave, after dumping dust on my carpet AFTER I told him I had asthma! He went outside and sat on the curb until his upline picked him up. Her was a pathetic kind of young guy, so I felt sorry for him. In hindsight, he could have been a serial killer. Has anyone noticed that MLM recruiters that target college students often seem to have *no* clue what college is actually like?
They seem to think it’s like Saved By The Bell or some other similarly twee show where students spend very little time in class or studying and mostly hang out with their friends, throw parties, know everyone in the school, and have limitless money.
When I was in college I (and most of my friends) had a full time job, every spare minute was spent studying, and I was so broke that some weeks the only food I ate was ramen and whatever I literally stole from the restaurant I worked at (usually breadsticks, fries, or the odd wrong order a customer sent back).
The MLM recruiters that tell college students (especially ones with a job and/or parents) that they’ll be able to fit in an MLM “job” are either clueless or deliberately deceptive.

Tip from a former sales person for those who feel anxiety about flat out shutting the door in someone’s face: while you *think* piling your “excuses” helps your case, it doesn’t. Do the opposite: Pick ONE excuse and stick to it. She went with “we can’t afford the vacuum”, then “my husband”. One. Keep repeating one. Usually the rule for d2d sales is if you hear the same “excuse” 3 times, then you should move on.

It happened to me too! My exhusband let the guy in because he said he’d clean the carpet in one room for free. Our son was about a year old at the time, and the salesman was leaving little pads covered in dust all over the couch and tables. He said he just had to sell one more vacuum set to win a trip to Vegas and he’d “take all of us with him”. I told my husband this guy HAD to go as I had to give my son a bath and lay him down for bed. This man stayed in our house until 10 PM waiting for his upline to pick him up!!!!! I was BEYOND pissed off and I don’t understand why Kirby thinks this is a good sales model

    • @SingTas
      @SingTas Год назад +4

This happened while I was visiting a friend. They received a letter advertising a free carpet shampoo so they decided to book an appointment. A young man was dropped off at the fairly isolated home. He said his manager would pick him up. He set up an advertisement for a free trip to Hawaii. He proceeded to give a very long winded demonstration of the vacuum cleaner. It was amusing at first but it just went on and on. My friend’s husband asked him when he was going to shampoo the carpet and that he said he would only be there for less than an hour. He was trying very hard to make the vacuum cleaner seem like the wonder machine and pointed out the free trip to Hawaii which HE would get if my friend bought the machine. My friend’s husband questioned why anyone would feel obliged to buy a $2000 vacuum cleaner so that the salesman gets a free trip, and told him to finish up, clean the carpet and go. The salesman asked him whether he would buy the Kirby if he had the money. He said he would rather buy a motor bike.
I thought this was hilarious but enough was enough and the salesman was asked to go. He rang his manager and, although we couldn’t hear what the manager said, he told the manager that the customer would prefer a motor bike.
He stayed a lot longer and eventually cleaned the carpet and did a pretty mediocre job of it.
It was getting late in the day and still no one picking the guy up so my friend’s hubby told him that he could stop and enjoy a drink with us and then go. If this meant walking down the long country driveway and waiting for his lift, it was up to him to make the manager get him.
It was really bad. No matter how good the product is, I wouldn’t buy it. I don’t know how any of the sales people could get any job satisfaction and it could be dangerous for them because they make people angry

Before I knew that Kirby was an MLM company, I had let my friend do a demo for me cuz she needed to make her quota. She already knew that we weren't interested but I was still impressed by what it pulled up. We chatted about various things alongside her saying "are you ok with me giving you the speech in my binder?" I said I was fine with that and when my husband came home on his lunch break (her and I were both military spouses) she said she had to call her "boss". Her boss then talked to my husband on the phone and asked what vacuum we have. He said "we have a Eureka and it works really well". The boss/upline's response was "I know you're active duty and have a lot to worry about with going out of state for training or the chance of deployment. When your wife is cleaning the house while you're gone, do you want her to be using something that is 'pretty good' or 'the best thing you've ever had'?" He, very matter of fact, said "I'd rather end up replacing a $50 vacuum from walmart than spend $3,000 on your glorified dustbuster". My friend laughed and said she was getting ready to leave the company anyway because she wasn't comfortable going door to door.

That trainer is BEYOND unprofessional!! I work at a gym, and have been a trainer for 7 years (you actually read my story a few videos back) and while I've gotten friendly with clients to the point of texting funny tiktoks or RUclips videos that get referenced in our chats, I'd never ask them to buy anything I'm affiliated with. The only company I'm an affiliate with is a small indie brand makeup company that makes my favorite lip balms and a few multichrome shades I love (makeup is my hobby). If I happen to be wearing one of those shades and a client asks about it, I'll mention the name and that I have an affiliate code that can get them a discount. But I'd never dream of harassing anyone about it! That trainer should be reported IMHO.
Also, I hate the focus on weight loss all these MLMs push - strength, confidence, mental health benefits and so much more are much better reasons to workout than losing weight ...

I almost thought I had made up my family's Kirby experience because it was so uncomfortable and bizarre. They offered to vacuum our basement family room as an example since that was the only carpet left in our house. They definitely stayed for around 5 hours, it was probably 8 or 9pm by the time they finally left. My older brother was googling them during our presentation and kept telling my mom not to entertain them any longer. She's much too nice and had a really hard time getting rid of them. The Kirby reps were constantly "calling their manager to get us a better rate" AFTER we said we didn't want one! I'm so glad I didn't make that up and other people experienced the same thing.

MLM's have such a toxic mindset! My brother tried to get me and my boyfriend involved in one a few years ago. We politely declined him several times and when he wouldn't let up we were honest and said that we weren't interested because the reviews we googled on the company he was signing up for were all severely negative and I never trust anything that looks like a pyramid scheme. He got so mad at the both of us that he accused me of never supporting him and he told me to NEVER come to him when I need help. That was shocking in itself to hear him say that but the worst part is just a month prior I had helped him out during a very dark point in his life and that was how he repaid me. The fact that he chose a scam company over his own family was really saddening and I was upset for quite awhile. But about a month or two after that he had messaged both of us to apologize so it seems he seen the light. But that could have completely damaged our relationship and I still think it's affected it a little bit.

But I actually had a couple of customers who were like, "Hey I just came here yesterday, why didn't you tell me about the senior discount?" I think a lot of women go through a season where all their time is occupied by childcare and chores, while their partner seems to be allowed to 'have friends, hobbies, ideas, and interests' outside of the home. And Mom? Good for chores, childcare, and meals. And that can seem like that's all. So in that loneliness, someone swoops in with what seems like a message of hope for having friends and doing anything that ISN'T serving anyone else but yourself. It's sad.

Fyi- to the R+F story, your inference is right on track. I work in HR and am a Career Coach and can confidently say in my experience, an MLM on a resume would not be taken seriously and, these days, is actually probably worse than a gap. Of course, there's a chance the recruiter/hiring managers don't know that it's an MLM so with the right wording you might be able to get away with selling those transferable skills, but even then it could be scrutinized. At least when I worked with Timeshare Sales training, the hiring team was very selective with where the candidates got their experience because it is very difficult to fix off-brand and unethical sales tactics. Human Resources teams are now training leaders to think critically without judgement of resume gaps, especially considering the pandemmy. Meanwhile working for, and learning from, an unethical business will reflect badly if anyone in the hiring process is aware of how the company runs.
I have actually thought about this a lot when hearing mlm stories of people quitting their jobs. Not only is it risky and not sustainable, when the recruits and sales run out or the company dissolves, reps have potentially imploded their career. They often wouldn't think or worry about that of course because the dream is to not return to a "dreaded 9-5" but it does a good job diminishing that option for them.

I used to watch Gardners Quad squad from almost the beginning as raising quadruples was very interesting to me. I noticed Ashley was starting to sell Lipsence a lot, but I didn't know much about MLMs so I didn't give it much thought. She certainly was pushing the products and never really mentioned recruting on her youtube. However the content on their social media started go get really strange and negative. Then she posted a reel on her instagram saying: "When people say direct sales doesn't work- You didn't work".
I was shocked and couldn't understand why anyone would say something so cruel about people, especially since she always clamed to be such a kind woman of faith. This was the reason I started doing research on MLMs and now I realize this is a classic MLM victim blaming tactic. I was really dissapointed in her and I don't follow her content anymore.

I have experienced the Kirby pitch 3 times and they are classic for having the screen door already open and step right into your home uninvited. Then they tag team you when the first representative can't make the sale. They never cleaned even one whole room of carpet during there visit. The third time this happened to me the sales lady did comment that her parents and grandparents both sold Kirby vacuums. Poor girl didn't have a chance to venture outside the Kirby mlm. (Cult like in my opinion)

they've been to my house 3 times as well!! I've sat through the presentation twice. Glad I"m not alone in this. The 2 times I watched it they asked the "right" questions to get into my house, the first time I got one to get them out of my house (had 3 days to return it so I did). The 2nd time I just kept saying no. The one time I didn't sit thru it they said they were from Kirby and I never let them in.

Our homes are meant to be our SAFE place... Can't believe these MLMers are invading people's homes, entering without permission and then being aggressive.. I feel for this lady and her kids :(

The Kirby got me too, five hours. The whole thing was they were giving a free 2 liter for a 10 min demo. I'm pretty sure they put something in the discs, bc no matter whether it was one pass or ten, more and more "dirt" would appear. What a nightmare! I'm a pushover.
