Subaru WRX 2.5 with a blown head gasket will be dirt cheap. Get it fixed, perhaps with a new radiator and you’re good to go.
As they say in Oz: If you want to go to the outback, get a Land Rover.... If you want to come back again, get a Toyota.

My astra is 10 years old! I havnt had one single problem with it.
Had three Discoveries. Nothing but trouble. Switched to Toyota Land Cruiser and its been a dream experience. Great video Mike - thanks.

My mate nicknamed is Astra the Disastra due to the issues he had with it.
The common problem amongst Astra J (09-15) is coolant leak, especially the O-ring at quick disconnect (side of the engine on top of the gearbox). Friend of mine does mostly short trips, so the coolant below that o-ring was enough to keep the car cool. If he use it for motorway driving, things could become really ugly. I had the O-ring replaced, fill and bleed the coolant for him at £15
Astra J models were plagued with reliability issues, Astra H models were far more reliable
The problem with JLR products is that people buy them and think they can run them on a small budget. they are a luxury and expensive car that needs maintenance (like most cars). If you buy one thats been looked after and maintained well, you should have a decent car.
The problem with Subaru head gaskets is not the car it's the driver.
I had a top spec Freelander 2 for three years and apart from servicing the only thing I had to do to it was to clear the aircon vent drain, a two minute job.
i helped a friend re engine his Freelander 1, from the dreaded engine to a bmw engine.
Snap, I've got a Freelander 2 2012 and the only time its gone in the garage is for a service, but thats typical of the LR haters out there.

BS. Sounds like yoyre intimating that you swapped out the K series for the BMW diesel. While the diesel models actually ran the BMW motor to swap out the entire engine and electronics, dash, various emission control systems, fuel system etc etc wouldn't be viable.
As Scot kilmer says, if you want reliability you buy honda, Toyota or lexus

Hondas are not what they used to be. Even the CEO of Honda a couple of years ago said they had to make serious efforts to improve their quality.

@@chriskinsley4922 yes we’ve got a Toyota Avensis for a family car, very reliable, comfortable, great interior space for the size of car, and a massive boot, even without dropping the rear seats down, very practical, wish I had it when my daughter was born 3 years ago, instead we had a BMW 3 series, took me 5/10mins to try squeeze a pram into the boot! In the Avensis it would have just dropped straight it without touching the sides
I am driving a 1.0 GTDi Fiesta Black (140 ps version) for 5 years now and did not have any issues with the engine or the car itself... Also my dad is driving a Focus 1.0 (125 PS version) for 8 years now and guess what he also did not had any issues with the engine... although we had some small accidents that required changing/reworking the front bumper, fenders etc, engine did not required any intervention at all. The only thing I agree with Mike is that it is not easy to find a technician outside the authorized Ford services if something happens. This is because it is not an ordinary engine that a common layman technican can tinker with due to the balancing, part tolerances and so on :) For the Vauxhall Astra (Opel in my country) shown in this video I heard lots of issues with the transmisson and have a friend that experienced problems and could not find a new transmisson because it is not produced anymore and had to get his transmisson somewhat repaired and continue to use it with some minor noise and rattling issues :(
@der kybernetiker The main 2 potential concerns with the 1st generation 1.0 EcoBoost engines are both relatively easy to mitigate and once sorted, they're a really nice engine (not so nice to work on due to multiple Ford specific tools, especially tools required for changing the cambelt).
The main concerns are:
1. The plastic t-piece within the cooling loop getting brittle, then failing, dumping all the coolant out and if the engine isn't immediately switched off, the engine will be scrap due to the higher temperatures the EB engines run at. This weakness is easily addressed by replacing certain parts of the cooling loop with the revised parts fitted to the MK3.5 Focus (due to the higher running temperatures, the coolant reservoir can also suffer from micro-cracking so it's sensible to check this periodically).
2. Like most engines with a wet belt timing setup, the belt is VERY sensitive to the oil being changed on schedule AND with the exact Ford specification of oil. Failure to adhere to this will result in the wet belt degrading very quickly i.e. it will start shedding material/teeth which will block/restrict the oil pickup in the sump. Not good news for the turbo at this point.
Other than the cambelt replacement job really needing the engine out, various Ford specific tools/parts so the cost is really high, it's really not a bad little engine.

Totally agree re the Discovery. I've had mine for 16 years. Total nightmare but I love it for some reason.
I had two discoveries .they were great no problems ..but i sold both before they had 50k miles on . Thats your answer dont buy any high milers .

Astra surprised me. I never really liked them until I bought one as a temporary car and ended up really enjoying it but at the same time never understanding why. I never had it long enough to see how reliable it was.

A friend had an Astra back in the 90's/00's. He drove it all over Europe and it ended up doing well over 200,000 miles.
Mine was an Astra J from 2014. It was a Diesel SRI and had a really great suspension that controlled body roll yet was soft and compliant on the straights. Reasonable ground clearance and a short wheelbase meant it was good on B roads and country lanes. It had comfortable Insignia like seats too. Had it had a Sat Nav and a DAB radio, I think it would have been an even harder decision to let it go. Some cars just feel right - I just sold a second hand, top of the range 4 series BMW that although much faster and impressive to look at, was actually a much harder car to live with and was total crap to drive compared to that little Astra. Wife hated the look of the Astra though and won't let me get another one....personally Its a BMW I will never buy again.
Astras are the first car that comes to mind when the word Vauxhall is said i they’re brilliant cars, and haven’t lost quality from the 80s to present!!

Bought a Freelander 2 litre TDI from new in 2002 and I am still driving it. Apart from an early common problem with the sealed hydraulic clutch linkage which was cured by a modified system it has since been completely trouble free. In 2021 with over 150,000 miles on the clock it still gives the same performance and mileage (500 miles on a full tank) as the day I bought it.
I has a m5 astra diesel auto best automatic gearbox EVER PUT 159 .000 MILES ON A DREAM CAR.
I had a 2016 gtc (astra), the suspension set up is fantastic, the electrical gremlins are many, and was known about. I took mine it to have a ground loop issue looked at, he said we can fix it, but the fault will still be there.
All it needed was an added risistor, he agreed with me but said VX can only do the procedures that set. I later got a new shape astra 5 door as a service loaner, first thing I don't was check for the issue. And yes it's still there in the brand new model!
Try charging your phone and listing via the cars aux jack. You get a high pitch whine that matches the speed of the alternator.
Granted the days of using wired headphones or wired bluetooth device are not needed much today, but still is a 2p inline risistor.

Have had freelander for 10 years. No real issues to report except gunk in fuel tank. Had VW Golf GTI with plenty of issues including head trim falling apart, oil leaks All cars are a gamble. If you like the car you’d put up with it if it need repairs.
Subaru head gasket issue common on the ej25D (DOHC) ,ej251 and ej253 (both SOHC) naturally asperated models....the turbo model WRX and STI used a MLS (multi layer steel) head gasket, problem not as common. turbo failures and rod bearing failures due to oil consumption and poor lubrication design the bigger problem If you own a Subaru you MUST check your oil regularly. Just the nature of the beast

I own an 11 year old Freelander 2 and it’s the best car I have ever had.There are still many of the these on the road and yes they are likely to cost a bit but in the right hands they will go on for a long time.I have just ‘clocked’110,000 mi and it feels just run in.Look after them and they will look after you.
Agree with the Astra being on the list. After owning a few Astra vans over the years with no issues I decided on a fairly new at the time Astra H 2008 1.7cdti for the family car. Once she got past 35,000 miles it was neverending problems.
Agree with you there. My girlfriend had a 2011 astra 1.7. At the best of times, it ran like a piece of farm equipment, but it also had no end of issues. Possibly the most frustrating car I've ever had to deal with.

my partner has had an astra now for 6 yrs and has had no problems at all just the usual, brake pads, battery oil senser presure gauge and it still runs lovely. ( regular service is a must and makes all the difference !!!!)
Re the Astra: I've got a 2001 Opel Astra, 1.6 engine (tuned by Lotus apparently - not just my car but the whole Opel and Vauxhall Astra range at the time) and it's very reliable indeed. Had to spend no more than £400 on parts for it over the 3 years I've owned it, and that was just for things you expect to need replacing like tyres, battery, bits of the exhaust At some stage a couple of bushes too. The car only cost me £300! It had done 114,000 miles, have added about 50,000 miles since then. The engine is marvellous. Got a lovely growl, plenty of poke, but economical enough at 40 mpg. Handles beautifully. A pleasure to drive, never lets me down, and the body looks as good as new. Don't know what it's made of but it doesn't rust at all. Modern Astras may be crap but mine certainly is not.
Quite agree & more of the same. Mines a 2004 1.4LS Astra mark4. 160,000+ miles now on the clock (122,000 when bought) Full service history. Bought her 6 years ago. Still on original clutch & Shocks. Original GM factory fitted battery failed 2 years ago. Replacement parts ABS sensor 2 years ago, one set of 4 tyres, Exhaust system back from cat & one rear shock. Does 45 mpg+, goes like stink on the A11/A12 - 85 mph cruising speed. Used to doing Norwich to Bexleyheath (door to door) in 2 hours 15 mins that's an average speed of 70 mph!
Again a pleasure to drive (like a mini American muscle car without the handling issues -Lotus inspired suspension) and own.
Need a cheap car, dependable, practical, ageless, good looking car you cant go far wrong with a Vauxhall Astra mark4 & unlike the Ford Focus mark 1 there are still plenty of good ones around.
Ahh the older ones, mr brewer is on about the newer ones, and I have to agree with you, known many own astras and can't recall any embugggerance?
I've got a 2003 Vauxhall Astra 1.6 and it's generally been reliable since my dad purchased it in 2012.
The previous owner hadn't serviced it at all and it must have been run on a shoestring budget. That was likely the reason we had to have major work done on the engine and replace the gearbox.
Generally since then not much has gone wrong.
It's been pretty fun to drive and the engine makes a nice sound. I've driven a fair few newer cars and this drives smoother than a lot of them.
Now the radiator hose is rotten and leaks coolant, seems to be something that started years ago judging by coolant stains on the engine block. Can't seem to find a replacement part, but k seal has done the trick for the time being.
Unfortunately my mpg figure isn't anything like yours. I barely get 28mpg which kills as the car isn't particularly fast either
Astra H was arguably the best of this model. Loads of them around with 6 figure mileages. Solid build and stood up to massive abuse / neglect. Well maintained examples went on forever.
@@maverick6631 Mine is still going strong. Engine still sounds like new. Lovely deep growl to it. But smooth as silk at 70mph and over on motorways.
Totally agree with his choices ......And Vauxhall especially my Insignia cost 2.5k in repairs got rid after 12 months when the problems were still there ...now running old cars
I agree. I had a 4 wheel drive Insignia which cost nearly £3K in repairs. Sold it an bought an electric car. Best move ever.
I run my MG ZR MK1 1.4 just make sure you check that coolant level frequently and you'll be okay.
I am simply astonished that Included in the top five cars that you should never buy, is the BMW 1-Series.
Back in 2015 I purchased an approved used BMW 120D Urban 3-Door sports hatch (6-Speed Manual). This particular 1-series was a 2012 (August) Model. One previous owner, Full service history, only 15,000 miles, with extended warranty to August 2018.......This little BMW has been amazing, over the last six years there has not been a single fault or issue, I mean absolutely nothing wrong at all. I have the car serviced and MOT (no advisories ever) in August every year at the main BMW agent, the average bill is about £410 including MOT a year. The BMW now has 62,209 miles on the clock. And one thing is for certain, I will be keeping this BMW 1-Series for many years to come.

Surprised that the Astra is on the list. My brother in law had an SRI from new for 10 years without issue. I have the Zafira SRI for several years which has been brilliant and a fabulous family car which is very versatile. Prior to that a Zafira 1.6 for 7 years which was again very reliable. The only thing that I spent on it was it’s service and a new exhaust. I hope after writing this that something doesn’t go wrong!

Mike is giving his own opinion, and in the case of the Astra, he does state that there are millions of these on the roads. It might be dull, mundane or whatever you want to call it, but it is very popular and I know of many, many Astra's that owners are more than happy with. They do have their weak points, but so do McLaren P1's which cost around £860,000 pounds new. You pay your money and take your chance.

Thank God I own a Peugeot 407 diesel estate. An 07 plate that hasn't let me down yet and I intend to keep it for as long as possible.
There are Peugeots in Africa still going after over 50 years travelling on very rough roads.
Same here, I've got a C5 diesel 07 plate and it's never let me down except for a flat tire and battery. Great car and I'm very happy with it.
I run a 08 skoda fabia estate 1.4tdi and its been absolutely bulletproof cracking little workhorse
@Stabswache in the past, Peugeot drivers would flash each other in recognition in Australia.
I had a Peugeot 206sw 1.6hdi 110 it had the space of a van with the back seats down would do 100 miles off £10 diesel and had 136,000 miles on it when I scrapped it because I left it sat at the bottom of the drive for 2 years waiting to fix a few mot jobs it needed but I never got around to it and scrapped it in the end as it filled with mould where I left the deiver window down without realising for 2 years 😁
I would add the second generation Mini to the list of cars to avoid. The Prince engine used in these cars is 'really really' a poor choice, be it the N12, N14, N16 or N18. I believe the same engine is used in the the BMW 1 Series which might explain the issues there. Basically you have a series of issues with these engines from coolant system failure (water pump and thermostat housing), cam chain tensioner failure, cam chain failure, oil control ring failure (cause of high oil consumption), value seats dropping out (N12/N16, hot idle issue) These are common problems across the the range so don't be fooled in to thinking its just a bad batch, they are all bad.
The Freelander 2 is a totally different animal to the Mk 1. I've had three a Mk 1 which had a patchy reliability record and two Mk2s. The Mk2s were bullet proof over a total of 100K miles. Basically a Ford with LR badges. Only complaint I had was the heavy clutch. Like any second hand car, watch what you buy.
Mine made me want to put a bullet through my head. Heap of junk.
I had the opposite experience, Loved my Freelander 1, the 2 was a piece of junk. Spent more time in the garage than on the road before I traded it in.
Personally I'd never own nor want a Freelander, as I remember the crash test results... it was oddly poor for such a car.
Was it the Ford Lion engine? I used to watch LR Time on RUclips and wonder why anybody would buy one.

My wife has a 1ltre ecoboost for 6 years from new never had a problem and its used every day for work .serviced every year .
I had a brand new Astra J in 2010, what an absolute shed. Put me off Vauxhall for life, had nothing but problems from day 1, Flashing break lights when breaking, Went through 3 Coil packs in two years even though doing decent mileage. Breaks squealing all the time even with run in pads and disks seemed to need cleaning every 6months, Steering faults with sensors going bad all the time which almost caused a fire behind the dash, Exhaust rattles and a hole in the exhaust system. Then their was the rust underneath. One mechanic asked if the car had ever been in the sea at one point as the rust was so bad. Never again for me was happy to see it go 😂

Holy shit Mike knows his stuff. My list would not be far off that either. Subaru have had that issue for years and done nothing. The EcoBoost timing belt tools are about £600 for the kit.
I bought a discovery and it had few problems when I bought it and those problems were fixed that was a year ago and it has been good ever since. and every car brakes down eventually

The engineering on the Ford 1.0 Ecoboost engine isn't bad at all.
Most issues come from owners not giving them proper and scheduled services.
As the 1.0 ecoboost has got a timing belt running in the engine oil of the motor, they really need their scheduled services and specified engine oil.
When services are skipped or wrong engine oil is used, this really affects the timing belt.
The acidity of old oil and the use of incorrect oil, causes the oil to start dissolving the timing belt.
A weakened timing belt can snap and can properly destroy an engine.
The particles coming off of the timing belt can also block the oil pick-up and cause oil starvation within the engine.
Oil starvation causes excessive wear and damage and could cause an engine to lock up.
But with proper maintenance they actually are quite reliable little engines

Ford had big group action lawsuit against them about the EcoBoost engine, Ford lost and had to pay up 10grand to the various people, it's a design fault. Engines are not built to be as good as possible they built to emissions laws, and to a price (down).

Many independent garages won't touch these engines. Ford used to make super reliable easy to fix engines. Not any more. Suzuki make a 1.0 boosterjet engine, which may not have the performance of the Ford engine, but is more reliable and better engineered.
I think most of the 1.0 Eco Boost issues were with cooling/overheating as its a small lump of metal to get 125BHP out of. As for the Subaru, thats a surprise I didnt think there was ever a recorded fault of these !
153hp on the new ones... but his objection to it is going to apply to basically every small car very soon, they're all going for varieties of small turbo Ford just got there first.
I think the 1.4 Audi a4’s are going to be problematic too. Exhaust manifold part of cyl head , two cooling systems and 200psi injection seems like a recipe for repair bills in the future to me.
I would love to know your thoughts on the 2021 Subaru outback Mike, with regards to reliability and value for money.

Exactly right about Ford EcoBOOM engine , my wife's 1.0 red edition 140 just made it to 50k miles , she has owned it from new , full service history , oil starvation from a know design fault has now resulted in destroyed turbo which immediately destroyed the bottom end. £4k fix , the car is ultimately scrap. My advice is do not buy any 1.0 ecoboost cars from ford , new or old , avoid , avoid , avoid...as a matter of fact do not buy any Ford vehicle you will regret it , and customer service is deplorable.
I've got a Fiesta 1.0 Ecoboost (100 BHP) in a nice candy-blue colour with more than 100k km on it. So far so good, no problems whatsoever, although I remember my mechanic telling me once that 3-cyllinder engines can never be as durable and long-lasting as 4-cyllinder ones.
@@wolf79wolf79 That works out to around 60,000 miles or so , just be very careful , lucky to get it that far my friend , another Friend of mine 46,000 miles 2016 model focus just blew its turbo and top end a few weeks after my wife's fiesta , they paid for the ford service pack too , your a very lucky guy so far.... needless to say nether my friend or my wife will ever buy another ford...which is a shame because as you say they look great and have some stunning colours.

I had a Freelander 2 for 3 years no problem except routine maintenance. I’ve had 5 Audis and the last one was a total dog, lost count of how many times in broke down and how much it cost to keep going.
So the other 4 Audis were OK?

His selling skills on the tv program are pretty poor. He is pretty weak on getting decent prices. I am reluctant to take his advice on this...
I've got a mk5 astra from new and have never had one problem with her.
How many problems then
Not owned a Vauxhall for decades, but the Cavaliers and eighties era Astras were mostly trouble free. We had a 1981 Astra that just kept going and only needed a repair to its starter motor near the end of its life. Of course, it was just a German Opel with a British badge screwed on.

Newport Beach, where I bought my Ferrari 308GTS in 1982. Its on blocks somewhere in my garage.
worst car I had were German, a BMW 316 and a Merc CL55 AMG - my current car which I got soon after the garage took the lemon CL55 off me and gave my my money back is a Subaru Legacy 3.0 R SpecB with a 6 speed gearbox as used in the WRX STi - 5+ years and the only things that have went wrong (as in not in routine maintenance) is a inner boot joint and more recently a reverse position switch - for 13 years and 125k miles I call that pretty damn good - and the car itself is not like most others on the road with a 3 litre engine and some quite remarkable road handling. Only 17 were sold in the UK, 3 in dark grey so I doubt many have any idea about it.
I've never found a mechanic when I had my old Fiesta that wouldnt work on it, theyre great cars and great engines...
The new 1.0 litre ecoboost aint i can assure you.
Ford is rubbish.
To be fair to the Scooby; it wouldn't surprise me in the least if that's down to the way they get driven. You keep red-lining a car and driving it harshly sooner or later something's gonna give. Probably the head gasket.

Surprised to see the Astra in here. May depend on which Astra and which engine, but there's been loads of mostly Astra F and G's around me through the years and they were generally pretty good including my own. Friend of mine now drives an Astra H, also doing very well so far.+
Mike Freelander 2 is, was, bullet proof, I disagree with your assessment. The car was more reliable than its competitors and had better residuals, best in class in so many ways. I'm biased as I drove many, owned some.
Had a 1.0 ltr ecoboost Fiesta for the past 5 years and ever had troubles getting it looked at if anything needed doing, which in it's self isn't that often.
I bought a used Vauxhall Astra 1.6 petrol with about 32k on the clock, I had it for about 10 years, put another 130,000 on the clock, and the only major thing I had go wrong on it was the ventilation fan motor packed up

Dad had discos for 20 yeara. Properly serviced, towed a big 2 wheeled caravan to south of France every year. Nothing ever stopped them. Odd fault that any car can throw up but never anything that stopped the job.
I've gto a 2012 "posh" Corsa SE with the 1.3CDTI in it and I have to say I absolutely love it!. Had it remapped, feels suprisingly brawny for a little engine with around 180LB-FT-250nm and 120hp. can quite clearly see the headlight beam go up and down when the turbo goes on boost which gives my dad a good chuckle lol
One design flaw to watch out for with this generation of Corsa D is the ECU is stupidly placed under the rain scuttle at the bottom of the windscreen and I've heard that if you don't keep the scuttle clean and free of leafs then the drain holes can clog up and submerge the ECU in water. I have never had this problem because I regularly remove the leafs and make sure the drain holes are free.
One problem I have expirienced is the exhaust manifold and EGR clogging up along with a stinky DPF. Regular shots of Millers Diesel Power Ecomax and doing more longer journeys keeps it all working good.
Those little Fiat diesels are great, sad that they no longer produce them.
Another Corsa D issue is rusting out of the front subframe. Not the end of the world, but a weekend job to replace for a diy mechanic. Head gaskets and timing chains on 1.4s, and the coolant flange leaks on the right side of the cylinder head. Nice cars to drive tho.
And back in the real world where we can upset advertisers.. avoid Jeep all of them, any Fiat, BMW's with the chocolate timing chain, anything with VAG's DSG disaster gearbox and Fords PowerSh1t dual clutch gearbox... and 99% of anything "made" in France.
I agree with that lot. Buy Japanese, preferably a British built Nissan!

There are 14 Land Rover products in my family and circle of friends in the UK, Canada, France and Germany. Not one has had major issues, I am on my 5th Discovery, a D3, 168,000 miles, running well
Its a vehicle for the private school run, just as a Jeep Grand Cherokee is a vehicle for cashed up bogans on a state-school run. For serious off reading in truly remote and rugged areas where your life may depend on vehicle reliability, then it has to be a Landcruiser.

I had a company new Astra 1.4 1992 and NEVER went wrong in the 3yrs 123000miles.
We're not talking about 30 year old cars pal.
My company ran a fleet of late model Astra H vans for several years. Other than collision damage, none of them had any major mechanical issues in the 200k miles they each clocked up. The Peugeots that replaced them couldn't hold a candle to the Astras.
I have had a company 2009 59 Astra 1.6 from new to 26k miles. No issues whatsoever.
I then bought 2010 60 Astra 1.6 with 4k on the clock changed the car at 21k. No issues!
I now have 2017 zafira tourer auto 1.4 turbo so far it has done 15k miles. Again happy to report no issues at all.
I avoided the diesel versions as some friends were having reliability issues.
Disagree with the Astra ive had 3 never had any major problems apart from 2 got nicked

It's been a great car no problem at all . One of the best cars I've own over 50 years of driving

Head gasket the last thing? That's the least of your worries, better than the cam chain snapping on your 1 series.
Would I be correct to assume that he would have none of these vehicles for sale at his dealership? - or would he quite happily take your money and sell you a car that he recommends you should never buy?
I suspect he would be more than happy to sell any of these vehicles to anyone who comes by his lot.

By accepting anything and everything on the basis he has to, in order to stay in business, means he'll eventually end up with a showroom of old troublesome bangers. Or do what most dealers do, accept it and off to the auctions it goes!

I went from a Defender to Freelander 2, 4 years ago and I must say the Freelander has been a complete bargain (since LR introduced the Disco Sport and prices dropped they are everywhere) I've done ~30k miles with no issue. When I bought it, I read a report saying it was one of the most reliable LR models ever made which made my mind up. I also own a Ferrari and a BMW 4 series andhave regular issues with both. I think Mike must be referring to the Freelander 1 which I hear was pretty poor. Can't talk for the Disco as I've never owned one!
Totally agree, my 07 plate FL2 had 190k on the clock when I sold it, 8 years trouble free motoring
The freelander 1 had massive head gasket issues however the freelander 2 TD4 uses a solid bmw engine and are bulletproof

@@leerobinson3135 wrong I'm afraid. The freelander 1 td4 was a BMW m47 engine. Freelander 2 td4 is a 2.2 Ford duratorq engine.
Our freelander 1 was a nightmare. Drive shafts broke, diffs broke, boot rusted out, rear window constantly dropping with a mind of its own. The freelander 2 was better apart from the diff. LR Tech Service Bulletin LTB342 covers this.
Had my 2000 Freelander for 5 years.
The only time it has let me down is with a flat battery, once when the battery was buggered, and several times when it had not been driven for a week.
I have never washed it, let alone polished it in these 5 years, the inside is like a rubbish tip, and the back seat has so much dog DNA on it, it should by rights bark! The whole car looks like hell!
I have done some work on it, like cam belt and propshaft, but minimal stuff compared to most cars.

Lucky. My mate had an XJ6 that was bulletproof, had it for year and head and it never broke down once. Said he hardly even changed the oil, just took it in for MOT yearly and it was spot on.

All those cars really depends on how they are driven. An eco boost engine for example is designed for economy just because it has "boost" mentioned in its name doesnt automatically mean it can handle aggressive driving. The Impreza 2.5 engine is very strong but thrash it from startup cold and not letting it cool down properly after hard runs yes it may fail. The majority of these engines have been modified anyway so the statistics might not refer exclusively to factory standard engines.

I've got THE most reliable car I've ever owned ( I've been driving since 1977 ) , it's a Suzuki Celerio 1L 3 cyl and I've owned for six years since new . All it's ever had maintenance wise is two front tyres , oil and fluid changes ( never needed topping up ) and it's still on the original discs and pads .

German cars are shit, fact, spoken to many mechanics and know a few who own the stuff, 2 golf's, the first was a diesel GTI, camshaft, radiator fan, and lots of other things, crap! The guy that bought it was gutted after many years of MR2 turbo with a few performance tweaks, zero breakdowns in the Toyota! Another was a basic golf diesel well over £500 for 1 yes just 1 injector!! Citroen injectors are about £80, ?? German Engineering my arse!
Partner had an Astra for years and years, only thing that ever failed was the coil pack and we put tons of kms on it.
An error code the mechanic interpreted as the throttle body needing replacement, was easily fixed by simply cleaning the accumulated carbon off the inside.
My mate owns an astra ,he says it's the best car ever ,had it 8 years,never drives it so never goes wrong

I agree the early 1L Ecoboost from 2011-2014 had problems like the brittle plastic hose ford fitted from the expansion tank to the turbo which was recalled and fitted a proper rubber hose. The other problem was the useless clutches ford fitted to these early cars. which there was also a recall for. Mine went in and they said it was fine, but they tested them by revving the engine and lifting their foot off the clutch quickly wich made my clutch even worse and felt totally different. I later found out they had broken one of the fingers off the clutch plate which got stuck somewhere, and after a few months got unstuck and put a hole in the gearbox. So I then needed a new clutch, duel mass flywheel, and gearbox, but did not get it done by ford, as went to a proper mechanic. As fare as I know the 2015 onwards are fine, but I would never buy a French car that's for sure.
My brother in law bought one he's always had Fords , but he had nothing but problems from day one with the , before that he had a Focus and had problems with the gear box .

These tiny engines with turbo that all manufacturers seem to insist on now are basically a grenade under the bonnet.
Even Honda is having serious problems and they famously produce the most reliable engines.
Had a 1 Series for my company car, did 110k miles on it. No issues at all. Must have been lucky!
We owned a freelander 2 for 12 years used every day at vets practice .. has regular services and haldex system fixed but apart from that and usual wheel bearings has covered 247000 miles to date in all weather conditions with no issues. Totally reliable.
Compared to the Freelander 1, the Freelander 2 is a totally different animal when it comes to reliability.
I used to have the older 2.0 Subaru WRX, it was absolutely faultless. The most reliable car I've ever had. But I have heard the later 2.5 engine was not as good.
If a model sells in there millions of course there will be more break downs because there are obviously more of them to breakdown.

Agree with ecoboost and most small, 3cl engines that put out a lot of power on paper. The push to get the emissions down means trying to squeeze too much power out of small engines and they're just not going to last far in the long-term, especially the ones that you have to really wring to get them going (which defeats the economy aspect anyway). Not a bad buy if you purchase new and dump it after a few years before things go wrong, but not a great used buy.
Yeah to complex! And all for the emissions level, turbo multiple injectors, loads of electronics and a small engine that makes more power, more power =more pressure =more stress, bet there won't be any old ones on the road in the future! Ford got used for a design fault and lost on certain EcoBoost engines!!!
Had one for a while, pretty gutless, the larger capacity st line model had plenty of power under the lid for a three pot job, but, as you say a servicing nightmare.

My company car is a astra k estate 2016 1.4 non turbo petrol. It's done currently 60,000miles.
Driven 20,000miles in the last year since owning it and haven't had any issues.
Probably helps it's a non turbo model, but it does exactly what I need which is take my ventilation test equipment and ladders around London.
Yes it's a boring car but the seats are fairly comfortable and the dab radio works well and has decent fuel economy. And works fine on the rubbish E10 petrol.
Although I wouldn't pick if it was my own car, as I'd go for something more sporty or interesting.
I bought a 2006 off the floor Ford KA. It was reliable up to an impressive 100 thousand miles. Then the replacement parts became eyewatering expensive. You can pick up a nice running one currently for around a thousand dollars.
