I feel she plays the section you mention too fast. It's actually the exact melody as the opening hidden inside the fireworks, but the way she plays it it becomes a bit lost. I do love the way she plays the octaves leading into it. Very subtle and difficult to do.
I haven't gotten to the part where I have to play that yet, but I would imagine that I would cry if I tried to play anything a minute before your 4:13.

She’s the only pianist I’ve been able to find that doesn’t group up the 2/3 polyrhythms in the doppio section, and I’m really grateful for that. On top of that I find her way of playing this piece so “connected” to try and put it into words... (Not an expert)
I have been also searching for a long time a version in which there is such a rhythm independence within the right hand (Arrau tries to make it sound like that with the rubato but not with real splitting). It is also very nice how she emphasises the notes in the left hand which correspond to the bass at the beginning... I think this version is the best one at replicating in the end which has been sung at the beginning :)
May I ask what is your opinion on Fazil Say's version of this piece? does he do the same in the doppio section? you can find it on here on YT. I find your comment very interesting but I'm not sure if I understand it correctly.

Valentina is my favourite pianist of this generation. Her combination of flawless technique and passion is simply amazing. I´ve been coming back to many of this clips for years now, and i´m sure I´ll keep doing it forever. She´s astonishing. Thanks Maestro. I just can imagine the level of talent and dedication to achieve this.
It really depends, I liked the way, she played it. I heard other pianists play the right hand almost ff, which also sounds great. In the end it's just a matter of personal taste rather than playing without any personal influence.

A lot of despair, pain, and suffering going on in Heaven. Chopin = Tragic Love is my reaction to his music. And so I relate to it. But I am now old and my heart has hardened.
I have read so many comments on this beautiful Chopin nocturne, people critiquing her performance, with special focus on her interpretation of the Doppio Movimento section. Although I am fully aware that mine is but a small voice amongst the many, I do wish to share my opinion on the matter and give listeners another perspective to see this from. Firstly, yes, she plays the Doppio section too fast, and the difference between a recording of hers and, say, Artur Rubinstein's, is highly noticeable. However, I believe that both interpretations are commendable in their own rights. Rubinstein's more reserved performance gives the image (to me), of a deep anguish trapped within, a scream of sorrow held back and battled with internally. This performance lacks the reservation that Rubinstein's does, and so tells a different story. It takes the agitato marking very seriously, creating the sensation of agitation within the listener. When the the section reaches its climax, she lets fly with the emotions, the crashing C 7th chord stabbing directly at the heart. As I said before, these performances are interpretations; who are we to say what is the right way to play this piece? Valentina Lisitsa is an artist, and like all artists, must take a new direction in order for her art form to truly progress. I respect that some listeners might not agree with what I have said, as I have not set out to change what you think, just show you what I think. If you wish to ignore this interpretation in favour of others, be my guest. Just try see from a different perspective.

I have to say though that double speed section is what I’d like the most about her playing. I like this entire piece and I think out of the 50 other versions that I’ve listened to this is the one that I relate to the most. That section is pure chaos. It’s almost like everything‘s falling apart all around you and, you’re running and there’s just nothing to save you. You have no idea where to go. You’re lost it’s chaotic. And then, as it calms down to the haunting ending it’s almost like you’re accepting the fate of death. The song doesn’t depress me. I think it’s beautiful and hunting.
Valentina, as a lifelong pianist of over 30 years I have to say you bring something to this piece, an interpretation that is unrivaled by any other pianist. It is simply magical. My late piano teacher used to always talk about how Lisitsa 'just gets it', and I couldn't agree more, you just get it! Thanks for sharing this brilliant and magical interpretation for us. A beacon and testament to what I imagine Chopin envisioned when he originally wrote it.

My personal favourite of the Nocturnes and one of the most dramatic. If you like to think of the Nocturnes as "Night Music" then not every night is calm but sometimes can be agitated and restless. Thank you for this.

4:49 is one of the most technically brilliant moments I've ever seen. I've never heard such clarity of voices so different and independent from each other on one hand.
This comes off like someone whos struggling with something, something tragic, and in the second part they attempt to break free and see things in a better way, before it all comes crashing back in. And the pain makes itself inescapable and dominating. So tragic.
The somberness and anguish of this piece is just one of the traits that Chopin puts into his music, which emits a sense of beauty and pleases the ear. Bravo, Valentina!

I don't like the way she moves into the 4 against 3. It's way too fast. Ironically her overall time for piece is about the same as more definitive and more musical performances.

This is the first Chopin piece I ever really heard. I will always have a special place in my heart for it. Definitely one of my favorite pieces and certainly one of his best works from that time.
I don't get the ppl who don't like her playing. Her Beethoven sounds like Beethoven, her Chopin like Chopin,... She has great technique and uses it for a great sound.
I have heard most every version from them all and she knocks it out the park. So heart felt which defines Romanticism and the way Chopin intended. Truly the best.

Of course when Rubinstein at 73 told the 18 year old Pollini about Arm Weight - well, that sort of thing doesn't happen often...
I love her interpretation of this. It was beautiful how the lower triplet chords in the middle sort of chased the higher melody, gradually getting closer and finally meeting each other in the climactic moment and dancing together for the rest of the piece. I bought a recording of this by Idil Biret when I was learning a different Chopin Nocturne, and it honestly made me emotional the first time I heard it.
Actually he would’ve hated this- Chopin was very strict with how his students played the first 4 bars of this piece. He wanted the notes to “talk” rather than sing, he wanted always stopped his students from interpreting any less than a march where the notes are completely aligned with the left hand. The performance was good but Chopin would not have liked it
It seems that a lot of people are making rather rude comments on this... that is ridiculous... This nocturne is amazing and Valentina performs it with the expression and voice required for it. Let alone the fantastic technique. Chopin is an outstanding composer and Valentina is a top of the top pianist. I loved it. Bravo!

What I love most about this is the description. Valentina has clearly connected with this piece and has given extensive thought to the performance. Also I learnt a great deal more about Chopin reading it than I did studying my comp degree at a conservatorium lol

This piece of Chopin classics is playing differently by each of the top pianist: different gender and skill, different stop and pause, different weights on right and left hands, different emotion and many more. I find this recital very remarkable and worth to listen for time and again.

A truly commendable and beautiful rendition (though I'm far from an expert in this field) This is so much more than just notes on a page, there is pain here. More than other nocturnes for sure. Chopin has found a way to express emotion in a way no other composer has; it is perfection expressed through the notes on a page.

I used to not like this version because I thought her ending was rushed, but now I love it. She plays the doppio movimento at perfect double pace while being able to have a clear top voice and strong base voice which is very difficult when playing extremely quickly. Her peddling is also amazing, as she keeps it unmuddled, but still leans away from making the notes too staccato. Furthermore, despite the fast pace, the pain and beauty of this piece are still overwhelming brought to life. Overall amazingly executed, this is one of my favorite interpretations of this piece.
Like the description of this video there is something about this interpretation that is really hard to put in into the words. This is the best version I've ever heard (THERE I SAID IT), and I've heard a lot of versions most of which are played by the dead titans of the past. I can also play this piece badly with my own hands. This makes me no authority of course. I'm just saying this is a really special interpretation, and you should take a good listen to it.
I love when the heavy-octave middle section fading into the doppio movimento part. It gives me goosebumps. I don't know what Chopin had experienced when composing this majestic nocturne and Valentina expresses it beautifully. Waiting for your recital in Indonesia :)

I don't like the way she moves into the 4 against 3. It's way too fast. Ironically her overall time for piece is about the same as more definitive and more musical performances.

This is the first Chopin piece I ever really heard. I will always have a special place in my heart for it. Definitely one of my favorite pieces and certainly one of his best works from that time.
I don't get the ppl who don't like her playing. Her Beethoven sounds like Beethoven, her Chopin like Chopin,... She has great technique and uses it for a great sound.
I have heard most every version from them all and she knocks it out the park. So heart felt which defines Romanticism and the way Chopin intended. Truly the best.
One of the best interpretations I've heard of this demanding work - full of raw emotion and of course technical brilliance. Her phrasing is impeccable and the way she projects the melody so beautifully in the Doppio Movimento section is just sublime. Bravo, Valentina!

I love her interpretation of this. It was beautiful how the lower triplet chords in the middle sort of chased the higher melody, gradually getting closer and finally meeting each other in the climactic moment and dancing together for the rest of the piece. I bought a recording of this by Idil Biret when I was learning a different Chopin Nocturne, and it honestly made me emotional the first time I heard it.

Actually he would’ve hated this- Chopin was very strict with how his students played the first 4 bars of this piece. He wanted the notes to “talk” rather than sing, he wanted always stopped his students from interpreting any less than a march where the notes are completely aligned with the left hand. The performance was good but Chopin would not have liked it

4:12 is pure heaven.... PURE HEAVEN.
It seems that a lot of people are making rather rude comments on this... that is ridiculous... This nocturne is amazing and Valentina performs it with the expression and voice required for it. Let alone the fantastic technique. Chopin is an outstanding composer and Valentina is a top of the top pianist. I loved it. Bravo!

Wonderful piece of music, Rubinstein's recording has the perfect balance throughout, in my opinion, but this performance is heartfelt also.

This is so much more than just notes on a page, there is pain here. More than other nocturnes for sure. Chopin has found a way to express emotion in a way no other composer has; it is perfection expressed through the notes on a page.

Increíble hay que poder tocar el doppio movimiento a esa velocidad y con la dificultad que conlleva que se escuchen todas las voces lo mismo con la soltura que toca los arpegios increíble, está es una de mis interpretaciónes favoritas junto con la de Claudio arrau.

I used to not like this version because I thought her ending was rushed, but now I love it. She plays the doppio movimento at perfect double pace while being able to have a clear top voice and strong base voice which is very difficult when playing extremely quickly. Her peddling is also amazing, as she keeps it unmuddled, but still leans away from making the notes too staccato. Furthermore, despite the fast pace, the pain and beauty of this piece are still overwhelming brought to life. Overall amazingly executed, this is one of my favorite interpretations of this piece.
Like the description of this video there is something about this interpretation that is really hard to put in into the words. This is the best version I've ever heard (THERE I SAID IT), and I've heard a lot of versions most of which are played by the dead titans of the past. I can also play this piece badly with my own hands. This makes me no authority of course. I'm just saying this is a really special interpretation, and you should take a good listen to it.

I mean the weighting of everything, the well-judged use of the pedal, the singing lines. Can you imagine the work and thought that has gone into reaching this level of ability. She is brilliant.

Ela me leva para à nuvens, me joga no chão, me chuta o saco, crava uma faca nas costas, espremes os neurônios, dilacera a alma, sangra o coração e eu me sinto vivo. Наверное, самый пронзительный, и душевный из ноктюрнов Шопена... Ваша обработка, Валентина, самая интересная. Многие играют его в быстром темпе, а Вы делаете логические паузы. А еще мне нравится Ваша интерпретация бетховенских произведений. А вот публичное музицирование сильно страдает из-за шума ветра, может, воздержаться от улиц?
В любом случае, выписал два Ваших cd через Ozon, буду наслаждаться.
