It’s sad to see how much of this she’s forgotten and how much trauma and resentment she actually felt. You can hear it in her storytelling. For her it was work. Rachel and Melinda romanticize the story as we do as fans and you don’t hear that same passion from Mischa. It’s almost heartbreaking because so many of us love this show and are genuinely passionate about it, and we obviously didn’t experience it the same way she did but our points of view are clearly so different and mean completely different things.

She’s a human being who made a mistake that doesn’t make her evil. Yes she wanted Jimmy to go to jail so she can keep her family home. She always had a little bit of Brittish accents slipped out occassionally on the show. Just watch the 'whoever you want me to be" clip. The 'OK' was quite British. When Seth asked about her favourite bands, she said 'The CLASH', the 'Sex Pistols', all very very British. I quite like the idea that Marissa was NOT the typical California girl. It makes her connection to Ryan more believable. Summer is THAT girl at the start, but develops a LOT of layers. Ryan, Marissa and Seth are all characters that don't feel like they belong where they are. They are all fish out of water in one way or another. Ryan has landed in Newport, Seth is isolated there and Marissa has to pretend (because of her mother's constant pressure). That theme from Josh Schwartz seems to play through a lot of characters. Sandy is also a fish out of water and revels in it (they way he makes fun of the Newp-sies and tries to swerve the parties). Julie is running from her background too. Really, everyone is just trying to find a way to belong and survive in Newport.

    • @lpycb42

It made sense that they wanted to make her a foil for Ryan's darker, broody presence. So, I understand why they would've wanted her to be this bubbly, laid back surfer girl. But considering the arc her character went through, the choice to make her a bit different made more sense.

Everytime I even think of the scene, I start tearing up because I know Marissa is just a fictional person but for me, it represents someone wanting to turn their life around after facing uncountable hardships and then not even being given a chance to do so.
It’s like after everything she went through, what was it all for? Just to die? It just breaks my heart because as much as I understand Marissa, she did really have a chance to eventually figure it all out and be a happy person. I can imagine her as a loving mother to a daughter she had with someone outside of the OC with a decent career and relationship with everyone within the OC universe.

I am so so so grateful Mischa agreed to come on the show. Marissa was my favourite character, I related so much to her. Just in how she always had to be the one to fix everything, the pressure of that, being the oldest, trying to keep it all together, perfect on the outside but falling apart inside... Watching Mischa do such an incredible job as Marissa kept me going. I live in Ireland and years ago she was in Dublin doing a play - I hung around the backstage door and was lucky enough to meet her. She was absolutely lovely and I was so nervous I could barely talk but Mischa, should you see this, thank you. Thank you for 3 years of strength and inspiration by playing Marissa. Thank you so much Mischa for coming on the podcast! It's interesting to hear about how tired she was by season 3 compared with seasons 1 and even 2. Even though I like seasons 3 and 4, I always got the sense that when you look at the main actors in the last two seasons, especially Adam, they look absolutely exhausted, and I suspect the writers were probably exhausted too.
Ultimately I think the brutal schedule is what led the show to end sooner rather than later. Introducing Michael Cassidy and Autumn Reeser and Willa Holland definitely helped, but when the anchors of a show that started off so fresh and exciting are overworked and exhausted, it's going to have an impact. On one hand I'm glad we got long seasons because we could feel like we're growing with the characters, but on the other, I think The O.C. could have gone much further if they had the episode and shooting schedules of some of today's streaming shows instead.

As a heterosexual guy, I think many of my friends initially reacted weirdly to me saying that it was THE show to watch, I think because at first glance it came off as another 90210 or some cheesy daytime drama show; you’ve got to remember, this was different times. Matter of fact it was SO ahead of it’s time to me, looking back, but me being into the show; the acting, the script, the music, the dynamic, the legendary quotes! Everything, and I was a biiiiig indie music guy at the time, so that really spoke to me as well, and I totally saw myself like this mixture between both Ryan and Seth, and it was something my guy friends initiallly thought was weird, but listen:
EVERY. SINGLE. GUY friend I had, I ended up watching it up here in Norway (again with the Norwegians? 😂) they ALL ended up loving it. Like, with a passion.
We actually kind of ended up being this friend group of like 6 teenagers, watching it every week, together with our girlfriends, and honestly, for better or worse, The OC became the blueprint for our dynamic and what we would do in life, so that is interesting. Looking back now, and rewatching the show, I clearly see myself as more of a Marissa type of person as a teenager and in my 20s. I really was lost, and I became that person who would drink a whole bottle of vodka on weekdays, in the middle of the day, and would take a lot of pills etc,
which I would battle for over a decade fresh out of high school, but I’m proud to say that I’m sober 3 years in February; so rewatching the show with my mid 20s fiancé is just amazing. She really now understands the stories that I’ve told her of me growing up with all these grand house parties, bonfires, sailing, going out to lunch and stuff like that as a teenager, and all of us just gathering around to watch movies or play video games together, and make tacos.
It was all very wholesome for a while.
Fun fact: My friend quite LITERALLY became a lawyer because of Sandy Cohen. So the show had a profound impact on me and my friends.
Anyway, I love you all; and I would like to thank you for being such an important part of my life. ❤

I don’t know where the awkward & uncomfortable comments are coming from, I didn’t notice any of that 🤷‍♀ I think Mischa probably had delayed audio & was concentrating on listening to what Rachel & Melinda were saying because of that but that tends to happen with a video chat. Mischa definitely talked about the negative aspects which included being tired/exhausted, gruelling/long hours, not only multiple takes but different acting within those takes & even filming 2 episodes at once where she didn’t get any time to prepare. I also loved hearing the bts about the audition process & how she got the role. She didn’t think she was the right person for the role & didn’t want it because of that, which probably impacted her experience from the start. Huge thank you to Rachel, Melinda & Mischa!!! For me, season 3 is the worst season, many things went downhill, useless characters like Johnny, too much and unnecessary drama going on.
This year marks 20 years since the first season aired in August 2003, I watched from the very beginning, and like the Queen Melinda said at the end of podcast:The O.C. is a cultural phenomenon, and still remains, changed our lives and the cast lives, so I think all the bad and ugly things Mischa has been in the years playing Marissa, it worth it, she's a teenage icon, and always will be remembered as Marissa Cooper.

This has been one of the best things I could have gotten in 2023. I began watching the oc about 18 years ago, and rewatch it 2X a year without fail.
The OC means the world to me. It’s been through everything with me and influenced me as a person. Seeing the amazing women who I looked up to coming together like this has been just so brilliant.
    🫶🏻 the oc forever

This show was a huge part of my childhood and building my confidence and sense of humour and it's amazing watching you guys watch it and react with us. I have never watched Marissa's death and not cried, it's so heart-breaking.

Yay! Mischa showed up! Full circle! So good to see the three of you together and the positive vibes. Kudos!!!! Seeing the death scene again wrecked me! Thank you. Just Ben left now. Holding thumbs!
