    I hate excessive dealing as well. If you are not entertaining and you start dealing packs of cards, then I am already bored. Another big pet hate of mine is any magician that acts superior to everyone else because they can do tricks.

    A pet peeve of mine is if you are doing a vanish of a coin or any small object holding the hand that supposedly took the object so tightly there may not possibly be anything in that hand. Along with that is not dropping the hand that placed it does not drop but continues to be held almost as high up as the hand that will be doing the vanishing. For crips sake your done with that hand drop it no more attention on it.

    My biggest pet hate are the overuse of complicated flourishes particularly in card magic, I'm fine with cardistry as a separate art form, but if you are trying to present the idea that you have magical powers then you really ought to hold back on the flourishes, it's hard to get a person to suspend their disbelief if you've just done a knuckle busting 90 step rolodex, it no longer looks like a feat of magic but a display of dexterity cause after you've shown you can do all those fancy moves when you do your ACR your spectator is just going to think well you just did more of that didn't you.

    • @24magiccarrot

      I think the 21 card trick gets too much hate. It's the first trick most people learn, it doesn't hurt to give someone a little bit of encouragement if they are just starting out.
      I'd roll my eyes if it was at a magic convention or done at a magic circle meeting as I'd have higher expectations, but if it's just a layperson in a regular situation then I'll let them do their trick and show them how they can make small improvements to their presentation then hope that might spark an interest in that person to take a deeper dive into learning magic,

  • @michaelworsham2724

    Nobody in magic does the 21 card trick for an audience, other than maybe their family. One thing I find annoying is magicians who say "Perfect!" multiple times while a volunteer is selecting or signing a card, or doing something the magician just told them to do.

  • @CornerEagle
    @CornerEagle 6 дней назад +1

    I have two pet peeves.
    One, the double undercut. If you don't use the double undercut to actually cut the cards, don't use the double undercut to control a card, and noone has ever in the history of cardboard used a double undercut to actually cut the cards (it's the internet, of course someone will have done it, but they shouldn't).
    Two, showing a card, then putting it back on top of the deck without any justification before immediately putting it on a table or someones hand. Oh boy, look, it's a giant blinking neon sign saying "double lift".
    In general, a lot of card tricks would benefit from running through it without any sleights. Like, if I don't need this card to go here specifically, does my handling still feel natural?

    • @droidx1191
      @droidx1191 5 дней назад

      A good justification for returning a selected card to the top of the deck (setting up a double lift) is drying the Sharpie ink after the spectator signed their selected card. As seen in Craig's wonderful "Magic Button."

    I think it's worse when the strolling magician brings out multiple packs of cards and they are not so subtly marked, 'stripper,' 'Svengali,' 'Mnemonica,' etc... he also set out two other non-card tricks in the row and proceeded to do all the effects in order... only saw this once, but once is enough. Oddly, the table of guests still seemed to enjoy the magic anyway.... (On the bright side, he didn't have an instruction sheet laid out on the table as well.)

  • @kjudgemental3648
    @kjudgemental3648 2 дня назад

    Dani DaOrtiz's 21 card trick version is great, does it specifically to mock that everyone knows how the 21 card trick works and does the entire routine with a spectator pressing their fingers into his eyes and triumph shuffling the cards blind, purely because everyone knows the trick is awful. Also its Dani DaOrtiz so he can get away with doing almost anything through pure charisma and energy

  • @Nico360
    @Nico360 6 дней назад +1

    The one thing I hate soooo much is "magic with subtitles"... I think it's objectively bad to do so. "I'll shuffle the cards", "Let me place the box over there", I'll do this, do that... just f'ing do it, we'll see it. Focus on script, not subtitles.
    Another thing is doing an Acaan with the "Acaan script", like... "there's this holy grail in magic..." Oh stfu 😂

    Personally, I think as long as you say (and you did) that this is your opinion and people are free to disagree, then there's nothing wrong with talking about your pet hates. The not doing a deck switch when using multiple decks is just dreadful, it's not like you even have to do a particularly hidden deck switch either, even just putting the decks in your pocket or case whilst you do something else is enough cover if made to look natural enough.

  • @m.skotmacfarelyn9344
    @m.skotmacfarelyn9344 6 дней назад +1

    1.) Excessive use of the words “actual” or “actually”. It happens WAY too often. Just the other day I watched a video by a magician that I respect and enjoy, but he uses the “actual/actually “ thing approximately 16 times in a 3 minute clip.
    2.) Thumb shooting out when a coin is classic palmed. This is even worse when followed by magician’s pinkie.
    3.) I have yet to see a magic square that I thought was entertaining. Even if they involve escapology.
    4.) Scripts that are all nonsense and scripts that are all demonstrative. When I say nonsense I mean vague lines about “energy” in a three phase multi-coin routine. As much as I enjoyed the tricks ellusionist put out in the 2000s, those folks had the absolute worst patter or script lines to go with the effects. Demonstrative speaks for itself. People aren’t stupid. One doesn’t need to say “If I put the coin in my hand…”. Just put the goddamn coin in the hand and keep moving.
    5.) When a mentalist appears to struggle to psychically ascertain a bit of trivial knowledge from a participant, says the information out loud, but then goes on to reveal that he/she/they had already predicted this information earlier and that it has been in plain sight since the the beginning. If the mentalist already knew well enough in advance to write the prediction down and place it in plain view, what was the point of all the struggling?

  • @ThatEm

    "Do me a favour" when it's not a favour, "now I'll do....{x}....is that fair? Is that fair?" along with "It just SEEMS fair hahaha", not taking your best effects and building your own presentation for them, I also hate bad routining. Just seen a Magic Castle Closeup performer who wasted his best effects by the time his show was halfway through. When the last effect came, it was very underwhelming (as the audience also thought). Oh, I also don't like people 'pretending' to be funny and nice. Most magicians pretend that, but a lot actually manage to feel decently authentic.
    Ah, how could I forget. "I can do this with or without applause"/"I'll do this until you like it"/"...and the audience will burst in spontaneous applause". I hate magicians asking for applause. It really feels pathetic and underserved, especially as it shows how few magicians actually understand audience reactions. MORE PET PEEVES CRAIG!

  • @mbcx9ts2

    Magician who say they're using a fake method for a trick and act like the audience are fools for not noticing like "how it works is that the coins are magnetic and I have a giant magnet in my shoe did you not see me cock my leg like a dog"
    When a spectator says how great they think Dynamo is and the magician responds by having a dig at Dynamo.
    27 phase cups and balls routines.
    Creepy magicians
    Illusionists who want all the credit for an illusion where all they did was drape a cloth over a box and pretend like their assistants aren't important.

    On the excessive dealing, I grit my teeth when the selected card has disappeared and the participant is instructed to first, count that there are only 51 cards remaining, then are asked to run through the deck to verify their card is the missing one. This is not suspenseful or another phase, it’s boring and unnecessary.

    It actually does make sense to shuffle after a pass. A layperson trying to lose a card in the deck would stick it in somewhere and then shuffle the deck. If you stick it in the deck but don't shuffle you would know about where it is.

    • @TheMagictom1
      @TheMagictom1 7 дней назад

      I see your point! But some think that a pass should be used especially when you want the spectator to know that the card is in the middle of the deck and can't possible have been moved or transfered to another place ie. Ambitious Card. There are other examples but I think you get our meaning. Like Craig stated if you are not trying to give the spectator that impression then just do a double undercut.

    • @presto709
      @presto709 7 дней назад +1

      @@TheMagictom1 Yes. In the ambitious card it wouldn't make sense to shuffle after the card is apparently placed in the middle, for instance. The same with card on the ceiling.

    Doing the paddle move 10 times instead of showing each side just once like a normal person.
    In fact, any kind of over proving.
