The way Rammstein composes their songs puts them head and shoulders above every other metal band out there. They're brilliant at not playing over one another, and varying tone, volume, tempo.... not artificially, like some music theory nerds, but by the needs of the song. #1 band!
About this song being a single: Having a music video really helped the message of the song. It was very clear in the video the kind of message they were trying to convey. Although the music video emphasizes a lot more of the social/political frame of the fear manipulation and doesn't take much time to explore this children-raising-topic. So even speaking basic German, when I got to read the lyrics and translate them, the message was clear enough.
So it was a very good choice for a single because, as the song is very well tied to the zeitgeist, the music video was capable of getting the message through. (and we know that when Rammstein releases a video, people WILL watch... sometimes before listening to the audio release)
I love the way Till writes the music and the way it makes you think. Such a good lyricist:

Angst is above and beyond my absolute favorite song by Rammstein. Even above Sonne and Engel.

As an American, it's still my favorite on the album. During workouts, it's good for at least 1 or 2 more reps. You've got to time it just right for when you need that extra juice for when Till screams "AAAAAANNNNNNNNNNGST!" at the end. That's at least 1 rep right there. I've been waiting for this breakdown! Been waiting for this! I know just enough German that when I first listened to this song and got to that line in the chorus, I was like "woah wait what?" So I had to go quick pop over here to see if you had done a lyric breakdown for it yet! You hadn't, but you had done the video for the music video, so I watched that. And just watching the music video even without your commentary shed so much light on the lyrics, even though I don't speak German. And given the visuals in the video I very much agree with the idea of the double meaning of "schwarzen Mann" tying into current events. I can't stop watching that music video actually, this is probably my favorite song from the new album.

It was years ago i fell for rammstein and now feel they are part of my blood, your vid's help open the perceptions and help people like me who's only native language is English to understand what is being said rather then a direct translation and miss the message in it, also i have NEVER been to a proper gig, local bands etc but not a concert because work money etc, and years ago before deutschland i imagined i would never have the opportunity to see them live as could not see them on tour again, well my first ever concert is gonna be on the 30th in cardiff, problem is NOTHING will ever match it's awesomeness, proper bucket list moment, just hoping dhl get the stuff from rammsteinshop to me before then lol, all the best fella, your a proper diamond geezer (london slang) 👍

Thanks for your translation 😊 Parents don't realize what fears they are instilling in their children but as the children get older they can think on their own and hopefully fears or prejudice will not run their lives. Loved this song from the first hearing without even knowing what was being said. My video interpretation was the information online was consuming everyone and turning even neighbors against each other.. as like in the U.S. politics....

As an American, I saw it as a kind of American thing, especially the gun stuff. Rammstein always hits it out of the park. Love your videos, I always learn a little German along the way!

As an American with very basic German when I first saw the music video with the american dream dad and the picket fence building walls and buying guns with the lyrics I knew being angst for fear and schwarzer mann being black man, didn't know it could also mean boogeyman, I figured it was calling out racism in America, especially knowing the bands view of the country.
It's a pretty big critique to Conservatives in the US with the imagery, imo.

I was a little surprised the children's game wasn't mentioned. „Wer hat Angst vorm schwarzen Mann?“ is a fixed phrase from the name of the game, as well as the name of a couple of movies and a book. The phrasing then wasn't random but already has some cultural roots.
But yeah, Rammstein absolutely recognized the play-on-words with the German „schwarzen Mann“ and the word-for-word translation into English. If it wasn't necessarily clear just listening to the lyrics, the music video sealed it. They directly showed the fear that White Suburbia has for people of color. So while one could still interpret the song as a fear of the boogeyman and of the unknown, I think the definite intention of the song was to call out racism, particularly among white suburbanites, and how that racism has been passed down through generations through family, communities, the media, and politics.
I wish you could explain why at first it’s Die Rucken nass and then, Der Rucken nass, then the last time it’s back to Die Rucken? 🤯

"Der Rücken" is singular. "Die Rücken" is plural. That's all. It has nothing to do with the cases, it's just "the back" vs "the backs".
Maybe they put the “du” in there because of du hast. I know that’s probably not true though

What's the meaning behind the two people in the beginning who seem rather poor, sitting on the floor and are barbed wires?
The lyrics say: "They are all afraid of the bogeyman". In Germany we use another expression than "bogeyman". But what is a bogeyman? How does he look? We imagine a man dressed in black, whose face you can't see, who is perhaps a devil, and because he is dressed in black, we call him the "black man". And so there is a double meaning in the lyrics: "They are all afraid of the black man". This is a song about xenophobia. The band plays with words and the film shows the "black man": a woman, a child, without hope, behind barbed wire. And the citizen isolates himself behind walls and arms himself: ANGST.
In the last scene of the music video, they watch two black people in a circle of barbed wire on TV while eating a certain snack that used to have a racial slur for a name.
I'm not saying Rammstein is racist, but this song is definitely about racism too. When interpreting the music video, in my opinion, it's about fearmongering of black people, by the media.
And in at the very end, people seeing through the manipulation and breaking out of it. As pictured by the TV being smashed, and more saturation returning to the footage, with each blow.
u might have overlooked something lyric whise because there is an szene where they eas Dickmanns concidering that and looking back at " schwarzer mann" it makes it more clear that this is ment in 2 ways wich gets lost in translation because well boogie man does not also could implie strongly malanined people like "chwarzer mann" can do
what lets me think that is because well i dont wanne type it but u shure remember the 2 names Dickmann's/Schaumküsse where called before they got their modern names looking at the time stetting of the white mens clothing and the electronicy used in the video its even more clear what was implied
