The pads themselves are the real star of this drum machine. Terrifically sensitive and capable of great subtlety.
I bought a Roland R-8 this year. I don't think this drum machine sounds outdated at all.
The R8 had those late 80s sounds down! The “metal trash can lid” snare was epic.
That snare. That was used in some SNES games
And in Sound Canvas as well.
@@EdyGH36sounds canvas were used in video games in the 90s so it's understandable why some of these sounds are familiar

Ima about to release an Industrial soundpack made with the R8, actually it has a real potential for such sounds!

@@VintageGearFreak Well, actually nothing wrong with the unit. The seller was a computer recycler and they didn't have the proper power supply. I am down to either make my own or try to find one on ebay for $100+. They certainly don't come cheap!
@@VintageGearFreak Update: I ended up buying a new power supply for the R8. It works perfect! Didn't need to repair anything. Now to find some cards for it 😬
@@NPrescott I just completely refurbished mine. Found all NEW Switches and sliders. Replaced em all and all buttons on top of machine work like new. Carefully took display apart and cleaned all the contacts now the display looks nice and new crisp. Surprisingly all caps and resistors were still in tolerance but replaced the caps for longevity. The only part you can't get new are the pads, but you can take em apart and carefully clean em. Mine all work fine now in diagnostics all showing 1 to 127 in velocity. It's now a keeper for life and will outlast me. Now going to do my R8-M.

Last pattern was super nice
I got into an argument with a studio owner during a recording session in the early 90's over the Roland R8. He had just spend a small fortune purchasing it and I thought it sounded horrible in the mix :D Lets just say the session did not end well :D

Can someone please tell me if those awesome industrial metal hits & drum sounds that start playing around 0:50 are included with the R8 or if they''re from an expansion card?
Hi, the industrial hits are present in the internal sounds, some are in the 'copy instrument' section. The R8 allows for a LOT of editing of the PCM samples, you can make some really odd noises even from the simpler sounds, factory edits of the core 68 samples make up the 'copy instrument' section of 26 additional sounds. It's a great hardware drum machine.

How do you change the pitch of one sounds across multiple pad like in your video? Do I have to copy the sound and then change each pads pitch?
Like how did you pitch the sounds onto different pads at :44 seconds in
@@carygeorges Go in multi mode, then assign one sound in this mode. The multi set will make it chromatically playable!
i'm trying to find the name of the drum machine used on "love changes everything" by clime fischer.. it sounds similar to an R7 or R7 but i think it's not them..

Does the ram card have to be in in order for the machine to power on? Or does the power switch turn the unit on with out a card in the slots?

The Roland R-8 was used on TV commercials in the 90s
as it had only only just come out in 1989.
What kind of lunatic would willingly have chosen the rack-mount version over one of these bad boys? Physical space should never take priority over having a load of extra buttons to whack. I bet the same person would be happy using a mouse to control a high-pass filter, making a stupid face while turning an actual dial is like 70% of the reason the effect was created I think.
I have both. The rack holds 3 Rom cards + 1 ram while the regular R8 holds only one rom or ram. Easy to program rack from DAW too.
It doesn't work in the mix....sounds horrible,the samples are very old
It does have many more sounds other than the gated snare snare sound
and the sounds demonstrated here. Some of the drums at the start are
still usable.
