- (update: 3/26/24)Wow, how far we have come since this recording, all of us. Sierra is now world famous, in some small subset of Americana music lovers. Millions of views, who woulda thunk it? Last time I saw her, I was making a few tour stops with Jeremie Albino, the Canadian musician and buddy who was opening for Sierra on some West Coast shows. Sierra sauntered up before a show one night, we exchanged hugs and hellos, and she offered me some deadly powerful edibles. Then she rocked the theatre each night.
The first time I met Sierra, she asked me to dance at the Honky Tonk Tuesday night at the American Legion in Nashville. Of course i'd heard of her before - from Lost Dog and various bands and vagabonds who told me of her amazing old time singing and habit of blowing into (and out of) town. The rumors held true. Our friend Eric introduced us in his amazing home studio to do this video.

Her voice sounds like a old 1920s recording, and it’s amazing.
Woohoo I know it I love it rock out
Thats the mic and the EQ on the recording (added to her extreme focus on the style)
yes♡amazing.swoon!{♡}
Harmonica microphone gives it that old timey record sound
Fallout should take this one
What a haunting voice. This young woman is no fucking joke. She gave me shivers.
full body chills
Collab with Coulter Wall, would set the shivers going on a global scale.
Her voice sounds like old vinyl. Great stuff
That's very true!
You summed it up perfectly
Here is something to remember...
Like the crackle of dust being hit with the needle...
Her voice its a smooth drive on a young road, but the tires have seen gravel a few miles back. A stone pebble flings out of the tread, ringing the wheel-well, echoing a brief reminder of where it's been.
My first thought exactly
We need a Colter Wall and Sierra Ferrell collabo project! Their cowboy picking would flow so nicely.
send em requests!
@@GemsOnVHS please make this happen!
OMG YES make this happen
Or Charley Crockett
And go !
Make murder ballads great again.
working on it...
You never here "Hey Joe" on the radio anymore now that ya mention it..
Saggmo Young Edwin..
Look for the growlers little miss jack
Nine Bullets by Drive-By Truckers
From her facial expressions it’s like she becomes the character in the song. Like she’s feeling it straight from her soul. Such a rare and different tune! Love it
Ya mean like she really did it. Hee hee.
Best RUclips rabbit hole I ever wandered down!
Fucking right
Amen
Right!? I started with Rising Appalachia and now I am here....
Welcome!
This is two years old and I’m only hearing this now. I think it was because I was looking up “oh brother where art thou” stuff and this happened to pop up. If I hadn’t, I would never have known about this. That would have been a shame because this is a truly a hidden gem.
The smoky vibrato and mysterious songwriting of Billie Holiday mixed with the tragedy and rock and roll of Janis Joplin. She’s an instant classic
did billie holiday write this i cant find it anywhere ?
@@eljungo902 It is an original song by Sierra Ferrell
hear hear
@@thealaskapicker8628 Yeah, that's what I thought. Fuck off with your Billie Holiday Janis Joplin modern americana associating bullshit. This is modern cowboy music and if you can't think of a better comparison then go back to the city yuppy. Billie fucking Holiday???? Give me a break. Janis Joplin was a whiney hippie put on by a rich Jew. Just like Whitney Houston and P Diddy and Springsteen and Aerosmith and Alicia Keys. Piss off. This young woman is miles ahead. The issue is with the platform and the listeners. People, like you, are too interested in black media and black culture and do not even begin to understand the roots of this music.
I always say it's a mix of Dolly Parton and Janis Joplin when I try to describe to people/
it really makes me angry that people like this aren't famous.
If she were famous shed lose all her personality and be dead by 27. Be glad shes not.
Right it's the only thing that keeps their hair like hers and her voice like hers. She is natural and 100% fucking for real
I not sure they want to be.
@@lydia3317 I feel you on that sista
Everyone already said it but yeah. Music industry makes artists conform to its BS and kills everything we loved about the artist. Fame runs everything it touches.
Sierra has a maturity in her singing and delivery that is astounding. She knows exactly what she wants and how to get it.
i honestly think this is one of the most captivating voices i have ever heard
I love the way she gives a quick glance at the camera at the very end. Such flare.
I have never been big on country but this girl could convert me. Her talent is outstanding!! Wow, what a voice.
Absolutely love it. I'm not a big country or bluegrass music fan but this woman has talent oozing out of her. Her voice is irresistable.
Timeless vocals right here. Sierra is my new favorite. This song is perfect from start to finish.
Love her. So genuine and unique. She's a game changer in the music industry.
I don't even consider her country music it's almost like folk music combined. Powerful unique and absolutely awesome
"game changer in music industry"
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
She is beautiful, almost as much so as her voice. Amazing artist here, need more people like her
ish
Way back on the mountain in our deeply forest hill where me and my true love we said I do
But nothing lasts forever in today’s world though it seems when there’s so much evil when there’s so much evil
When there’s a witch that is on your back makes it feel like the night will attack
You got a witch that is on your back makes me feel like a heart attack oh oh a heart attack
One day that rain it started and it never stopped no it never stopped but now I
Knew with just one glance that dam it couldn’t hold one more drop
I thought we would die together with your hand in mine your hand in mine
But you went back to Rosemary you went up on the hillside
Way back in the mountains where Rosemary she waits for you
Where Rosemary she waits for you
I thought that when I awoke that would be my last day yodelayoo
I thought when that river came it would carry me away
I’m alive so I went back in the mountains I went up on the hillside
I went to Rosemary’s where I’m killing both of you
So now I made me a garden and I dug it in the morning
But underneath that flower bush Rosemary waits for you well Rosemary waits for you
I killed that witch that was on my back
No more feel like the night will attack
I killed that witch that was on my back
Oh I feel like I can relax
Thy god can relax thy god can relax
I am looking for this lyrics for more than a year now and still don't know wtf is going on...
She wrote this?
its just "like i can relax" repeated at the end, but very good job! nice of you to put these lyrics here :))
What's that from?
I want sierra to sing my great grandmother’s music so so so badly…. She’s a folk music legend and I know sierra would absolutely do her best to show respect and love while bringing her music back to life. Also nothing would make me happier in this world than to hear sierra’s beautiful voice singing those songs… too bad I don’t know how to express this directly to her 😢
Still has not gotten old. ... Always appreciating this ... Gardening .... 💚
what did you burry under the bushes 😉
I've listened to this at least 20 times today.. her voice is just so hypnotic and beautiful
This woman is something else...The sort of voice that could sing standards for hours & each one would be excellent.
literally said, "Damn" as soon as I heard this.
me too
Wow, that was amazing! She has an incredibly captivating energy, and that song was fun and creepy and boastful and evocative. I'm excited to see more from her!
She's one of a kind.
Love it. She’s absolutely great, I’d like to see a Tiny Desk session. 🤙🍻
ABC STEVE YESSSS!!!
Spoke to her once on the phone and choked like a dumbie. Been covering this song for awhile for open mics and just adore her! What a sweetheart!
What a timeless voice..her phrasing is what blows me away though. The right emphasis at the wrong time (untraditional vocal lines in the melody) sounds super genuine. Puts her own twist on that old sound.
but its an original song
And sometimes... you find something, like Sierra Ferrell, and it makes you think maybe the world ISN'T a shit hole and maybe we AREN'T going to hell.
God's she's from another era......pure gold
It has a pinch of Billie Holiday in it, I love her voice its refreshing to hear something unique to this time.
Well at least 4 people know who Billie Holiday is
She really does I didn't realize it until you said it
Got halfway through and was thinking the same thing, had to look through the comments to see if anyone said it!
totally noticed that right off the hop
@@cosarimanediuncuorespezzat474 at least 5
Her voice is pure love. I'm so grateful for just finding her songs tonight for the first time. For once I'm at peace.
This is one of the greatest recordings of all time
Sez a kid barely out of middle school...
@@cmerton that's a pretty creepy thing to know.
@@sam8404 Such a ridiculous statement could only come from a kid.
Damn. Shes beautiful. With a voice to match. Everytime she looks into the camera, sheesh. 🤤❤
“I made me a garden I dug it in the marnin” 🔥
Yeah, we need more from this fantastic artist.
I'm sure she'd ramble back into town if this gets a bunch of love. Share it around!
Holy fucking shit. I just fall completely and hopelessly in love with her every time I see or hear her. What an incredible talent.
This song is so eloquent and masterfully put together. I can’t believe how Gems captures an artists spirt on video. Keep it up guys! Hopefully I can grace this channel in due time. Till then, I’ll continue to be a super fan.
Been listening to that song for 6 years in my Playlist,so glad I discover you with that song, there's not a single song I don't like of you, even you're cover like "years" are amazing,I got through a long depression with you're company❤
Heard this when I went down a RUclips rabbit hole 2 years ago... never seemed to get out of that hole.
My dad's side of the family came from hollers of Allen County, Kentucky. My great grandfather was a tobacco farmer and known to have a large knife collection and to be very proficient with them. Grandpa was 6ft7 which for 1900 was a giant. My great grandmother was 1/2 cherokee Indian and 4ft10. My grandfather had a favorite knife. The story goes that this man kept coming around my great grandmother and kept bothering her even after she told him she was with Grandpa. The man disappeared and so did my grandpa's knife. Those hollers in Allen County have claimed a lot of people the law wouldn't deal with. I idolized my grandpa and he was the man who got me interested in collecting and using knives. I also got my height from him.
I can imagine how easy it was in the early 20th century in Kentucky to take matters into your own hands when you were disrespected.
This song made me think about that story.
I live for these stories. Awesome
@@withelisa if I could reply with a photo I have one of Grandpa and Nee-Ma
I bet I could whoop your granpies ass.
JUST KIDDING " Grandpa carried an ole' bowie knife, in his overalls, he had a textbook copy of the constitution, and a pair a cast iron balls! "
We need this on spotify and apple music!! I keep coming back. So good.
i’m new and wow.. obsessed.. her tone.. songwriting.. it’s so tragically beautiful and tenacious and just damn dude. Someone mentioned in comments about seeing her soul seep through in this performance and how you see her becoming the characters n yea It’s incredible. Bravo
Welcome 🎉
Such a haunting cadence to her vocal range.
I can’t stop listening. To her voice. Then her playing. Awesome stuff.
Can we get a Benjamin tod and sierra Ferrell collab video?
Bankster Of Lovee I said the same! Or colter wall
@@AmericanWhiteTrash oh the harmonies those three could pull off.
Can I get an amen
Put her and shakey together!
Honestly Matt Heckler and Sierra would slay it vocally
She absolutely shreds guitar and her voice is definition intoxicating
This version is so much better than her "official" version....
I agree with your comment, as well as your name.
@@michaelbrown1724 yes, there are a LOT of us! LOL

MaryJane In Wonderland no, heard it a thousand times
Don’t worry Gals and Guy’s she is getting Bigger and Bigger every day, to the people that know their stuff, The Cream always Rises to the TOP , Sierra is a Real Troubadour with the Spirit of the Carter Family and Ronnie Lane Running through her even if she don’t know it . This is hands down the best version of the song I've heard.

its a shame people make it about her looks. shes very attractive..but..shes also super talented..and she has that old time voice down.
She' playing on an old Gibson J45. Never heard of her, but a great voice and what a beautiful chick!
This girl is bad ass no artist of today can even touch her .amazing
The Charley Crockett rabbit hole led me to Sierra about a year ago and I just had the ABSOLUTE PLEASURE of seeing her perform at Red Wings Roots Music Festival this past weekend. I seriously cannot get enough of her and hoping to see her this Saturday at the Blue Ridge Music Center!!
She has such an old timey voice. Love it
Sierra is an incredible singer/songwriter with such unique humility that is seldom found. All that know her love her deeply. A soulful performer with a gift from God. 🌺🌺🌺
Definitely a humble and fun soul. She's great.
Truly.
The times I have listened to this !!!! Seriously! Enchantress!!!
Love Sierra's spirit and cheeky sense of humour!

hell yeah mate, stay tuned for more, subscribe and share! luv
what a true artist, my God how much we need her kind!...
So thankful for Sierra right now ❣️❣️❣️
Her voice reminds me of singers from the great depression. From the '20 up to the early '40s. She's a hell of a picker though.
Pokey LeFarge and Sierra.

In tears and in love. Amazing. Old time - done right.
This is mesmerizing and beautiful, can’t wait to hear more from her.
I've fallen in love with her sound
You know it's funny what a young man recollects? 'Cause I don't remember bein' born. I don't recall what I got for my first Christmas and I don't know when I went on my first outdoor picnic... But I do remember the first time I heard the sweetest voice in the wide world.
Best comment ever
Perfect Forrest.
Me too! Was Auckland New Zealand. She opened for Pokey lafarge on a solo gig. Both were amazing but she was absolutely enchanting.
utterly brilliant, a ballad, where the lyrics, the voice & the guitar, all tell a story so cleverly, brilliant!
This is incredible! Her voice has me speechless.
Amazing voice 🤘🕺🏻 this is my kind of jam
You out here bringing back that Cab Calloway sound 🤘 great stuff
Excellent. What a voice.
I have listened to this 10 times a day since I stumbled upon it.... this is amazing
This young lady sings from her soul.
My new favorite song. Sierra is an absolute treasure 🖤
Can't get enough of this..
Like one person said in some comments.. I am now in love with this girl.. she is why people believed in sirens..
This Gal has it going on and should be rubbing shoulders with the likes of the greatest Ladies in Country/Folk music. She's a certified Star ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ & I'm a big fan!
One of very best songs by the amazing Sierra; we are so lucky to have her. Her current band is cracking, but she still does this one solo.
And it still gives me chills...
just when i thought i couldnt feel anymore.
Oh my God that voice and the melody holy shit
Still my favorite song she's ever done.
omg.....how have I missed this?? Outstanding.
This is now my favorite song. The Judy Collins-esque vocalization combined with the dark lyrics and the beyond pro bluegrass playing has just killed me.
Thus made me cry and then I shit my pants. Best day of my life
I'm in love as soon as I heard her voice. Thank you gems. Get us more, a legit video of Irene would be sublime.
This is the aesthetic that makes me spend money. I have found every song here, and lost send to every one....and I am in. All in. Great sound
Listen to all theirs songs, they really should be more famous.
Wow, Thanks for bringing us this Gems. Such a Unique Sound, and from a One-off Beauty!
That's what we're here for. Thanks for watching!
I saw her at a bar in Hollywood opening for cw stoneking and I instantly fell in love w her as a whole artist the voice the tunes her aura was impactful never will forget that night
An absolute song bird!
Thank God for such an authentic & original artist who pays homage to the best of America's historic roots/folk/jazz/bluegrass/white country blues/Western & swing, while taking it all to a whole new HIGHER level!
The crap (Taylor Swift) that is passed off as today's commercial music pales in comparison.
I pray that Sierra keeps herself safe and creates & performs for decades to come!
