When the cameras rolled he was magic. Watched Extreme Prejudice last night and his small part was larger than life. About to revisit A Stranger Is Watching. R.I.P.
I true American success story. Rip was a singular individual, and I'm glad to have had the opportunity to get to know him in my youth. Rest in Peace old friend.
No one like him for sure. Now everyone is the same obnoxious young person lol I miss these actors Like Danny Aiello and him... So many older actors sitting around doin nuthin or barely seen cuz they're on some tv show...
I remember him from the 1985 movie Summer Rental as the eccentric old dude teaching John Candy how to sail. Wow he's only 52 in this, but looked more like 70. He had a super fascinating life with tons of stories probably
What a great actor-- so funny and menacing. He was best on Larry Sanders, but also great in Defending Your Life and so many other movies through the 70s, 80s and 90s. When i was a kid, i used to get him confused with Rip Taylor, and those of you who remember who Rip Taylor was, that's pretty hilarious. R.I.P. That's twice this week i found out about a death from your channel-- you're not only providing entertainment and television history, you're also providing a public service.
RIP Rip. The Sanders Show’s Artie’s in my T.V. character hall of fame; Rip imbued him with a sort of punchy sentimentality that you can see even here in this quiet Letterman chat. Thanks, Don. For a certain class of entertainer, I know to stop by your channel when they pass.
Rip's range of acting on The Larry Sanders Show was so broad. They could write any story for his character and he was always great. Rip has great comic timing which not many actors of his calibre could pull off.
I remember seeing Rip Torn for the very first time in a Colombo television movie series picture, with Peter Falk. In fact, Rip was a regular guest star on Columbo. He was more of a dramatic serious méthode actor, from The Actors Studio, then a comic. But he had a shy and humble personality. Thank you. Johnny, Montréal, Canada 🇨🇦
It’s refreshing to get a glimpse of the real person behind the characters, but I must admit it took me a couple of minutes to adjust to the fact that the interview began and Mr Torn didn’t sound exactly like Artie from the Larry Sanders Show!
the man who was so drunk he thought a bank was his home....imagine going to the pub and Ollie Reed and Rip Torn are both there! that would be a wild night!!
He doesn't seem like the kind of guy who enjoys doing publicity, plus, being cast in supportive roles mostly, it's the stars that do the talk show rounds, not usually the character actors.
Watch the beginning again, (00:51) and watch how immediately Rip describes his character in Cross Creek, saying "Well, I play a backwoodsman, a poacher, a bootlegger, a subsistence farmer..." Dave innocently says "a guy in Florida." And Rip begins to laugh, thinking Dave has made a joke saying "in other words, every guy in Florida is a backwoodsman, a poacher, a bootlegger, subsistence farmer." But is that what's happening? Watch it again... (00:51)
O.K. Looking at the man 'Rip Torn' to me, will star in a version of Harry Chinaski once this Ai is all sorted out. Seems like a no brainer lol? I propose a date of Augusta 16th for the opening, sound good? ha! Cheers (lets tell it straight, they could've been separated at birth!)
I was going to say something about how he shouldn't have done Geraldine Page that dirty, but then I see that his daughter is in the comments, so I will temper it
Thanks for posting this video of my late father Rip Torn. I love watching this so much. ❤️
It’s my honor, Danae.
Ms. Torn, your dad brought so much laughter to many. I especially loved him in Defending Your Life and Dodgeball.
Peace to you.
@@gardenlover9663 Thank you so much. So nice to hear this!
When the cameras rolled he was magic. Watched Extreme Prejudice last night and his small part was larger than life. About to revisit A Stranger Is Watching. R.I.P.
Hey Danae, I watch Larry Sanders Show constantly and he was so amazing. Hope you're well
My dad and i used to caretaker his house in lakeville Connecticut great guy and friend
As long as he wasn't on the speed like he was during the 'Maidstone' debacle.
cool
"They said it sounds like a comedian .. but I said 'no, that's my cousin." Don't blink, you'll miss the man's genius.
great interview with my dad love it!
I true American success story. Rip was a singular individual, and I'm glad to have had the opportunity to get to know him in my youth. Rest in Peace old friend.

I've never really seen Rip Torn as a young man. Very charismatic, & I'm a fan of that parched dry humour.
One of the best American film actors. Very underrated. PAYDAY is one of the best American pictures of the 1970s.
I heartily concur !! A really powerful actor who had a truly unique personality !!
Slept on classic!!!
It's unreal how he created that character and where he took it on the Larry Sanders Show. What an amazing talent this man was.
RIP Rip Torn...you were great in 'Payday' (1973)!
/J, Sweden
Yes, indeed ! "Payday" is a very underrated independently produced film. I rented it on VHS years ago & was blown away by Mr Torn's performance.
Thank you Rip. Defending Your Life and the Larry Sanders show uses at least 20% of my brain
Thanks Don. I loved him in "Defending Your Life" with Albert Brooks and Meryl Streep.
RIP Rip
One of my favorite movies. Love the scene in the restaurant.
Take a piss!
Thanks. Loved Rip Torn in the Larry Sanders Show. He was quite a character, what with the run ins with the law, the Norman Mailer thing, etc.
RIP Rip 👍
He was a great actor. Cross creek is one of my favorite movies!! Rip Rip!!!!
Truly gifted actor who is truly missed.
Imagine showing an actor's driver's license on national television in this day and age.
I admit I immediately put it into google maps lol
@@PantsofVance - SAME!!! It's a cute and humble little abode. 😌 👌
Insane how different things are now
Rip played an unforgettable Marine DI in the “Lieutenant” and loved him as the crusty admiral in “ Down Periscope “. Awesome actor. R.I.P Rip.
Wild some of his best roles were still ahead of him! Icon. Thanks Don.
Thank you he was an original☺🎇
Indubitably ! A truly unique talent & personality.
Thanks for putting this clip up!
Love this interview, Rip Torn is a very interesting character!
I remember him from the 1985 movie Summer Rental as the eccentric old dude teaching John Candy how to sail. Wow he's only 52 in this, but looked more like 70. He had a super fascinating life with tons of stories probably
lmao he does not look 70
A tear and moment of silence for Rip Torn. Artie.

I hope the Lord knows how to make a good Salty Dog.

This is great!
What a LEGEND!! Rest in Peace RIP TORN
Awesome guy. May he rest in peace.
I certainly have a notion to second THAT emotion !
He was perfect in Heartland and Cross Creek!
As I do when I take off my hat, you make a good point !
Mr Torn was an acting legend. He was such a great actor. He made The Larry Sanders Show as Artie.
Rip's range of acting on The Larry Sanders Show was so broad. They could write any story for his character and he was always great. Rip has great comic timing which not many actors of his calibre could pull off.
Had a lot of good times miss ya RT ❤️

Rip Torn was on “Columbo” only once. Perhaps you’re thinking of Robert Culp.
What a cool guy. He will be missed.
Sadly actor Rip Taylor passed away earlier today. RIP RIP & RIP.
Rest In Peace good Sir
omg! I fish on the Sabine river also here in E Tx... never knew Rip Torn did also..
Excellent in Columbo episode
Death hits the Jackpot.
Also Colonel Fargo in Twilights Last Gleaming.
Marsh Turner was an incredible role. If you haven't seen it, do. RIP, Rip.
Very underrated actor.
You speak the truth, Kemo Sabe !
lol I can't believe they actually showed his drivers license
It was a different time. Kindler, gentler...
It’s refreshing to get a glimpse of the real person behind the characters, but I must admit it took me a couple of minutes to adjust to the fact that the interview began and Mr Torn didn’t sound exactly like Artie from the Larry Sanders Show!
Can you imagine building a boat with Rip Torn?
It's crazy how much his voice had changed by the time he was doing Larry Sanders just a decade later. RIP
Well, two decades earlier. :)
Less than one decade
Richie Thompson You’re right; I neglected to think.
@@dongiller it happens ; )
Booze will do that.
thanks for Heartland Rip.
r.i.p
Heartland should be ranked in the top ten western films of all time!Brutal!
He was incredible on the Larry Sanders Show as Artie (R.T.)
I still never enjoy finding out these things from your uploads, Don! :S
Rip was great in every movie...even Robocop 3!!! Funny thing was I always thought as a kid - since he was funny - he WAS a comedian lol!
the man who was so drunk he thought a bank was his home....imagine going to the pub and Ollie Reed and Rip Torn are both there! that would be a wild night!!
Wow...this was 38 years ago today! Time sure flies...
Rip torn looks a bit like the Iceman.
wow I never realized until now
He was one of the funniest people of all time.
Was great, too, as the sleazy scientist Nate, who betrays Bowie in The Man Who Fell to Earth. Vale.
Rip was in a terrific "under the radar" movie - Flashpoint - year 1984. Check it out!
He really has a Texas accent here
1320 Howard Street, Taylor, Texas. Don’t bother, he doesn’t live there any more.
Well, I should hope not. He's been dead since 2019.
rip
rip
Every time you post a specific actor/musician video I always get nervous because you usually have the video up before I even hear they died…
I first saw you in Beast Master - RIP -
I'm really surprised Dave only had him on once!
He doesn't seem like the kind of guy who enjoys doing publicity, plus, being cast in supportive roles mostly, it's the stars that do the talk show rounds, not usually the character actors.
RIP Rip Torn
RIP :(
Freddy Got Fingered! “Our son can eat a chicken sandwich.” Love watching this guy suffer in that movie.
I just started watching FGF and had to YT some RT 😹
Every scene in that movie with him is amazing

RIP Elmore "Rip" Torn :(
lol. He cracked Norman Mailer's head open with a hammer then Mailer chomped down on his ear.
If he just had starting work out then he might be live. RIP
Check him out in “Slaughter”
Rip 💔💔
Jack donaghy wanted his position on 30 Rock. Liked him on Larry Sanders and 30 Rock. Like to watch the whole series of LSS
He sounds so different. I'm used to his gruff sounding voice.
Rip Torn was a riot as "Artie" on "The Larry Sanders Show." That was a great ensemble show but "Artie" and "Hank" made it work, in my opinion. LOL.
Dave's theme sounds kinda funky there at the end. Nice
Can it be that long ago? 36 years, and another one bites the dust. Just don't seem right.
Did he just give his address away on network television? Lol
The year Larry Patton mac Donald went down in that plane,1983
I have no recollection of this man except for his name
He's not hosting an intergalactic kegger.
Was this uploaded after the announcement of his passing?
Yes.
BY DAWN'S EARLY LIGHT.
Why did Letterman introduce Tommy Lee Jones as Rip Torn? RIP Rip! You were the best!
He kinda looks like frank costello from the departed here
His license was issued in 1986 so how was this aired in 1983??
And yet that’s when this aired.
Sissy Spacek's cousin.
how is he not jack nicholson's brother?
He looks like Anthon Lavey
Man...striking resemblance to Jack Nicholson. 🤔
I wouldn't mess with Rip go ask Norman Mailer...anyway he played nice with Dave...like Kinski...boy scouts...Dave was a loony whisperer!
hephaestus

RIP Rip.
Sorry, I just... had to xD Serious condolences, though
Is it necessary for me to drink my own urine?!
Gosh, I hope not. My own adult beverage of choice is vodka mixed with milk of magnesia. I call it a "Phillips Screwdriver".
I was going to say something about how he shouldn't have done Geraldine Page that dirty, but then I see that his daughter is in the comments, so I will temper it
Kind of an awkward interview. He was fantastic on The Larry Sanders Show, and a great character actor.
