Nice demonstration, particularly the idea of orienting the gun so the ejected round hits you in low light. I've never heard of that before so I think it's brilliant. I've had a stoppage where the tap was needed. I was in a training course using steel cased ammo in PMAG Glock mags, and the steel cased ammo was binding up inside of the PMAGs. A tap would sorta "bump" the rounds to the top, where a rack would feed them, and I'd keep firing for a couple rounds until it occurred again. Obviously, I learned pretty quickly to only use brass ammo with the PMAGs, or only use OEM mags with steel cased. I only carry brass/nickel in OEM mags, so this exact scenario wouldn't be a real world stoppage for me, but supposing dirt, mud, blood or something worked its way into the magazine and caused this type of "jammed magazine" stoppage, a tap would indeed make a difference. I recognize how unlikely that is, but just saying.
Adopted this technique about 12 months ago. Tap is completely gone. Need to still work on complex clearance stuff, I tend to just strip the mag and then re insert, rack and shoot when I'm doing it under pressure on a timer. Good shit!

Manipulating on the front end of the slide like this just has always felt more natural to me. It seems to be something to do with my support had being in front of/parallel to my weapon hand rather than it being behind it, as is the case when you rack from the rear. You also make a good point in extensions giving positive seating. I've always tried to carry something extended as a reload at the very least--17 mag for a 19, 17 mag w/ +2 for a 17, etc. Really helps speed me up having more purchase on the mags, too

hey Bill, this is a cool method. out of curiosity have you put this up against the timer for a tap, rack, unload, reload, rack method? the method is as follows. - tap or smash the base pad ( no need for you to do it for your reasoning) - rack the slide (do not lock it to the rear) - remove the magazine - load the magazine ( no slide racks in between) - rack the slide again - shoot. if at anytime the slide goes into battery and the magazine is in the gun shoot.
Bill, Just watched this again (for like the dozenth time) #1 I am glad that you showed this works on the Beretta. I thought that the slide had to be locked to strip the mag, I just needed to get more grip on the base plate. #2 when you are comparing the methods with the shot timer, could you put it on delay/random start beep so that you are starting with a full 2 handed grip? Might provide more accurate info.
The proof is definitely on the timer for that web of hand technique, but I wonder whether is would work on a wide variety of guns, under a wide variety of conditions. For instance, I'm wondering whether using a Glock 43 would negate the speed/safety of the technique, or whether it would work on a Glock 19 without forward serrations that was sweaty from being carried IWB.
For the mere half second (yes, I know seconds count) that it takes to tap that mag base plate, one can indeed remedy an incompletely seated magazine. I have seen this happen with two firearms, the Sig P229 and the Sig P239. Both were being operated by large men with large, meaty hands and both inadvertently pressed the magazine release button on these firearms. While a rare occurrence, it can and does happen.
I have had no issues with my glock as well, the only time i have seen a problem with a glock, is when the little notch on the mag where the mag catch hits it, becomes chamfered from use or possibly negligence... helped a couple guys at the range one time... it was odd

Yank out a mag after a malf, clear malf, then reinsert the same mag? WTF!!! I'm almost not sure you did this as a joke or are serious. The mag possibly the reason for the malf in the first place. Put the same mag back in? Ok....looks great in a controlled environment when there is nothing to lose but that is not a gamble that should be taken. Sorry...NO. YES...looks great on the timer on a training range but epically stupid gamble when life is on the line. Yank that mag...ditch it grab a spare reload...get that pistol back in action and go back to work. Is it a little slower...probably so....is it a much smaller risk of putting a defective malf causing mag back in place...fuck yes. That's not even to mention grasping the slide near the front site...really. What if a person doesn't have that hand strength...or more so has slippery hands from sweat or blood? What then? Not all pistols have grasping grooves at the front of the slide. This method is not sound. It...is...Not. Brian K. Richey if the mag is bad, it wouldnt allow all the successful shots leading up to the malfunction. Like he said, pez dispenser if the mag is bad. Or, civilians dont alwsys carry a spare mag...bad practice but a reality. And like he said...hes never seen an unseated mag...its rare ezcept on ar15s where a 30 round mag loaded to 30 rounds is hard to seat on a closed bolt.

I use the technique during the FTE demos on different guns, G19, M&P, xDm and Beretta. It works on everything I've tried it on, except revolvers. :)

could you rip the mag out, reinsert the mag, then cycle the slide - without locking the action open? if the extractor is damaged, the gun is hosed
