Back in the last century 1980's), a college professor said he liked having farm kids, especially those who sold their own livestock, in his classes. They understood work, they came to work, and they they knew what blood, sweat, and tears it took to pay for getting there.
I loved planting corn with my grand dad brings back great memories watching the video reminds me of him.(enough of the mushy 💩) No GPS back then either. He could plant a row straighter than a dye he was unbelievable in those old Deere tractors. Good Planting Andy lots of hard work but very rewarding.
Glad to see you getting seed in the ground! I did not realize that a person could turn off the option to receive comments when commenting on someone else's post- guess I don't understand that...
It always makes me feel good to hear common sense from a grown man. I'm still waiting to hear it from the younger crew I'm a 1966 model and don't know it all by a very long shot but I do know how to make money and live without help from the government And I think we are losing this in our young people
Andy, you should be running 2" straight shovels at a 35° angle to planting! I'm just kidding, you know more about your land than ANYONE else! If you want to get some hope for the future, go to your local 4H/FFA livestock shows. It gives me a glimmer of optimism every time. Engage with the young people, ask them about their projects, and 🤞 that they will take up the mantle of feeding the world.
Looks like worked up good, mellow. Andy, do you use posi lock like I have for years. Seems to keep front end of tractor from jumping from side to side. Maybe I'm silly but helps straighter rows.
Still wet here in southern Ontario.what pioneer varieties are you growing.had good luck with 720 and 806.529 won test plot last year.i grow seed corn for corteva too
I'm glad you were able to get some stuff done. There are a few full-time farmers who have been able to start. Most farmers around here work other jobs as well as farm. So, we have to try to plan vacation days. That is not the easiest thing ether. I have canceled several times now and will have to wait and see what the weather looks like. They are right in their comments, but it make for great conversation. And yes, if you say something, then you better be ready to get a mouth full exspeily if you're being a jerk, lol.
Ahhh.....the test plot....test the seed, the equipment and everyones patience...... as you're aware that we in the midwest can defy mother nature in ways you can't..... lol. It's nice to see seed getting in the ground across the country. Take care
Your ground must be a lot different than here in central Ohio. We can't do chisel plowing in the spring, our ground dries out, you have concrete clods.
Looks like your off to a good start, good luck this season. I'm with you about the college age people, when you listen to most of them all you can do is shake your head.
What's bad about today's college kids they think chicken comes from the store. They have no idea how it go there or who raised it to become chicken. We had 5 inches of snow here in northern Ohio this past winter and the winter before. Not sure why we are having warm winters when farmers need that extra nitrogen for their fields. Good planting.
We got between .30” and .40” of rain on Saturday & Sunday. Great video Andy. Have a safe and enjoyable tillage and planting season. Hope all goes well Oh it’s been said that the protesters were paid to stir up trouble… they weren’t even students
What are those kids doing all the protesting and having their rallies cussing the USA going to do when they're in their sixties and they have nothing? Do they actually think their government gives a shit about them and will take care of them?
The seed companys may not "cheat" on their test farms but i bet you they are biased. They cant "cheat" or be biased on your feild because it is what it is when its time to harvest.
Man yeah, seed is going in!! I know you are glad to get started finally!! I agree on the batteries for those saws, but man it sure is nice to have while they are charged!! Barb did great in the bucket!! Wow, 160 acres on a set of points!! That mainly due to the amount of rock? Just had to mention the straight lines 🤣🤣🤣 Boy that is AN ARTFORM in itself, I wont be able to show my corn from the ends 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Enjoyed seeing the test plot going in! I have a Stihl MSA120C electric chain saw that I use for small stuff (4 inches or less) and the battery lasts all day (about 6 hours).Pricey but it works great.
It's good to work with those test plots. From one angle, the seed companies have basically evolved the seed to thrive on and demand high inputs under perfect field conditions. Every farmer has a different corn growing recipe. You might ask them what their lab and seed growers used for inputs and rainfall to compare to what you use, I suspect it will prove to be interesting. Order some of the heirloom corn varieties to add to the test field like Rieds, Truckers Favorite, and Bloody Butcher to see how those compare and 'keep the commercial seed guys honest' (heirlooms thrive at lower planting populations so you'll need to adjust the planter for 9in spacing).
Very nice...I'm jealous of your soil...I have to deal with heavy ass clay (used to be sea bottom here aeons ago) so I have to use bigger steel and more RPMs / diesel...
your way a head uf me andy a month ago we where extremely dry not any more rains every 3 days and yup next 3 days rain again hopefully by the 15 we will get planting which is still early for use.
You should be able to adjust the outflow on your tile to keep more subsoil moisture in your field if you want. We have that option so depending on the spring and or rainfall I can adjust the amount of water that is allowed to flow out. On the dry years I almost close off the system and visa Vera for a wet one. Good luck with seeding this year Andy. Cheers.
My grandfather was a pioneer dealer and is gone now but just had a thought. Where do they raise all that seed corn. Let alone all the other seed for other crops ? Somebody is busy.
Glad to see ya finally putting down seed, Grump. We used to harden our vibrashank shovels with welding rod. Not sure if it helped that much, but changing out 60 ft. of vibrashank Flexi Coil shovels was expensive. Wishing you a safe & successful spring seeding. ps love those Coors Light tall boys in your mini fridge, & your fearless wife. Lol
Another gem Grumpster, good to see y’all in the field finally. Glad you were able to get a crop in, Andy. It has rained so much in Southern Illinois, some fields around here might have rice in them. Thank you for another good video!
Yup, there's a lot of misinformation and non education out there. Especially on the campus but also the White House lawn. It's a sad sad world out there these days it seems. I appreciate the wisdom emanating from the cab though, happy planting and enjoy a cold one at the end of the day. Maybe when you empty one of those small water bottles you can refill it with whiskey, put it back in the fridge mix the bottles around and surprise yourself later? Haha have a great day!!😊
I don't know but I think I'd like to have a vacuum like that. I think it'd be great for cleaning out the drill. Things are on pause here and more rain this afternoon.
I'm the same age as you Andy and I basically have the same mindset and attitude. Is it because of our age or are we some of the rare ones left that actually use common sense and see through the huge load of 💩 that is taking place in this country now
