In the Anime, The villagers are still trying to fight back against Arlong and the mom is killed outside the house as an example to the village. Payup or Die. This gets the village to fall in line under Arlong's crew. Also because the Mom was a ex-marine who fought pirates she knew that one of the first thing Arlong would do is burn the villages ships to prevent anyone from escaping. This means that Nami and her sister would be discovered eventually and the punishment for trying to hide them would be much worse for the village. Which is one of the reason she tells Arlong about the children.

    • @SpeedOfDarknesss
      @SpeedOfDarknesss Год назад +5

Good explanation. Also if we look at it from Arlong's perspective in live action, he knows she's an ex-marine, she tried to shoot him in the face, and she tried to withhold info/tribute payment from him. So he probably comes to the conclusion that killing her off now will prevent trouble in the future. Little did he know that his actions lay the seeds for a different kind of trouble that would come from Nami and her friends a decade later.

Why didn’t she tell Nojiko? because she needs to fully sell the idea that the villagers don’t trust her anymore. The fear of Arlong needs to be real because if Arlong found out anyone else i the village knows that Nami is actually on their side, he’ll give up his end of the deal and that puts Nojiko and everyone at risk.

24:24 In the anime, she did tell her. She’s the only person she told. Then her sister told the entire village without her knowing and they all pretended to hate her so she wouldn’t feel guilty if she decided to run away instead. It adds an emotional gut punch when you find this out.

Arlong stabbed Nami in the back because he still needed her. He recognized her talent and he didn't want to let her go. It was just adding insult to injury and he was enjoying it, because he knew she would never leave. He had collateral. He never planned on letting her go.
Second thing is that she didn't tell her sister here because she was afraid that they would want to contribute to the payment and just get themselves killed in the process, which the people of Coco Village didn't mind if it meant saving Nami.
Last thing is the significance of her asking for help. Trusting and asking for help are such personal things to reveal and it means everything to her. In her mind, the result of her asking for help is that the people she loves will get hurt, which is seen in the manga. This isn’t some amorphous threat or irrational fear born out of anxiety, it’s a memory. It HAS happened before and she can't let it happen again.

If you're wondering why Bellemere didn't lie about the existence of her daughters from it being different from the anime/manga how it was it was done there is that Genzo the guy with the scar face and pinwheel who is kinda like closest thing Nami and Nojiko have to a father he actually saved Bellemere in the moment Arlong inquired about the three plates at the table in being one of her guests, however when that bullet is dodged in keeping the girls from being exposed the village doctor informs the girls they have to leave the island as a means of keeping the lie of their existence from Arlong for their mother to stay alive and they themselves which suffice to say both girls don't want to leave their home/mother, but while Nami doesn't want to Nojiko being the older sister sees the doctor's point and is about to leave and try to get Nami to come along and yeah given how children being left alone at sea is while a chance for the whole family to survive the ordeal the issue is them being kids at sea is still practically a death sentence and so Bellemere realizing this for her daughters in that the lie can't continue to be kept secret ends up telling Arlong just as they're in the clear to wait and that she does have two daughters for the tragedy that happens with her sacrifice.
The other problem adding onto the escape plan for the girls is that while the chance is there Arlong's crew do patrol the sea around the island time to time, so they could have possibly come across them had they tried and this is even seen in the anime of some marine ships trying to save the villages under Arlong's control and due to them being fishmen they're able to go under the water and take down the villager's would be saviors that in taking out their ships from below via whirlpools or w/e means and yeah Arlong playing it smart realizes still has to keep things under the hood hence why paying off the rat fittingly enough named Nezumi.

      @HerculesOfHate Год назад +1

This is 100% important information to process when asking why she admitted she had daughters. There was no way out of the situation regardless of her answer. She felt the only way to save her kids lives was to pay for them and sacrifice her life. She was correct, she had previous experience as a marine and suspected that if Arlong was doing this and asking for tributes that he had already sealed off the island and would be executing anyone trying to escape as an example to the others.

Also to add, the question why Nami didn't tell about the deal she made with Arlong.
In the Anime and manga she did tell her sister from the start, but what Nami didn't know was that the whole town new about the deal the whole time. They just swore to live as if they didn't. Because they chose to fight with patience, meaning they will do would endure Arlongs rule until Nami could come up with the 100 million berries. They did this as a round about way of protecting Nami. Cause as long as she had a goal she wouldn't try and defy Arlong, ending up dead.
But the moment they learned Arlong double crossed Nami they all marched down to Arlong Park with pitch forks, knowing full well they would all die. Because they would rather die fighting than continue living under Arlong rule.
They only waited 8 years before they revolted due to trying to protect Nami.
Nami's back story is even more powerful in the anime and manga.

@Itoyokofan I am actually happy with the condense version of the LA. It is the same story just more of the cliff notes told by someone else. And after reading the manga and watching the anine nearly twice, I am rewatching it now, I don't think I could handle a full 1000 episode LA.

@@kylaluv8453 tbh, if everything went as planned as the anime/manga source, pretty sure it wouldn't be 1000 episodes because the main reason why there are so many is either they keep dragging out the tense moments in arcs or are trying to pump out quick content episode by episode.

Few key points. Nami doesn't tell anyone so they don't get involved or try to fight Arlong in her defense. Nami has spent her entire life with the mentality that she is the only one that can fix the situation, pushing away any help. She's dedicated her life to freeing the village.. And then as she's running after betrayal.. She just breaks down.. She knows there is nothing she can say or do to change Arlong's mind.. She's finally realizing that she was never going to be freed.. And she just collapses and takes out all that anger on the one representation of Arlong she can reach. Then, the crew sitting there waiting, and their immediate response to Luffy's call to action, was a counter to the entire episode of them having conflicting views. Finally, they are all on the same page, and immediately answering their captain's call to action.

Nami is an island. Luffy is a ship.
She didn't tell her sister because, that's her character.
She's the girl you meet on the boat enacting a one person con job. She works alone, she takes no friends, she pushes people away at every turn, she lies constantly and trusts no one, she doesn't even really have a dream (or so it seems). Even though she's a member of the Arlong Pirates, she's not even really a part of that crew, partly because Arlong hates humans and partly because she hates pirates. It's a bond in bad blood, honesty and deception, abuse and reverance all jumbled together in a toxic stew.
She's the exact opposite of Luffy.
We also first meet Luffy on a boat alone. But Luffy has a dream (that he proclaims to everyone and anyone), he never lies to anyone, he seeks out other people to work with and be his friends, his crew. Nami is a master nautical navigator and a survivor, but because she is always on her own and never allows others to help her, she makes so many mistakes that Luffy, someone seemingly without any sense and who can't even swim doesn't make. When the chips are down, Nami runs back to Arlong. Luffy doesn't run, he sits and waits for a comatose Zoro to wake up. He never gave up on Zoro, he never stifled his dream (all things Nami attempts to do out of fear). Zoro repays Luffy by promising to fight by his side and accepting his role in the crew as firts mate, for the first time.
It's only when Nami stops pushing Luffy away and allows him to lead her, like a real captain, that she saves her people and joins the rest of the Straw Hats as they sail away from her island, towards a dream that is actually her own.

Anime / Manga Spoiler, since in this version they change the backstory slightly and everyone seems kinda dumb as a result:
A lot of people know what Nami is doing in the source material, but the show writters changed this thinking it'd make Nami a more sympathetic character. Originally it goes....
1st) After Nami's mom is killed, Arlong learns Nami can draw maps and kidnaps her.
2nd) The village plans to rescue Nami, however they're aware they'll die in the process.
3rd) Nami joins Arlong's crew so the village will view her as a traitor instead of a captive, and wont attempt the rescue.
4th) Arlong proposes the deal to Nami to buy back the village, ensuring she wont ever run away.
5th) Nojiko investigates since she's skeptical her sister would join a murderer, and finds out about Nami's plan.
6th) Nojiko isn't on the crew so she isn't allowed to sail out and rob pirates, but she does help via emotional support, and gets tattoos specifically so Nami doesn't feel bad about hers.
7th) Similar to Nojiko, the village also learns of Nami's plan. However the village decides to pretend they're unaware. They ostracize Nami, hoping so she'll dislike them and run away from Arlong one day, bailing on the 100 million deal since that amount of money seems unrealistic.

In the original story, Arlong destroyed all the ships on the island first so that nobody could leave the island. Bellemere was a marine, so she knew how pirates operated. The pirates were there to stay so the chances of the kids not getting caught was very low Sacrificing herself was the only option where Nami and Nojiko lived. One of my few gripes about this show is that it makes Bellemere' look stupid for saying she has daughters. It would have only needed a 2 second clip of some villager saying.. "The ships are all gone, there's no way off the island." Or have Bellemere just straight up ask Arlong about it and make her moment of decision more obvious.

the beautiful thing about well done allegory, it applies to the real world and history, while not being specific what exactly it references. One Piece is really heavy with these open allegories, intentionally so, so that each reader, or in this case watcher can draw parallelels for themselves. (admittedly, given the musical choices for the fishmen, and the fact that it's produced by a north american company, this openess got quite a bit less subtle)
the whole thing with her sister not knowing is a live-action change - in the manga/anime, she tells her sister, who in turn, but outside Namis knowledge, tells the village. the village folk pretend not to know, so that Nami has the choice to leave and be free (the fishmen keep every other human basicall on a leash, sinking all approaching and leaving ships) . Nojiko got the tattoos so that Namis tattoo, or rather branding,m wouldn't be quite that big of a eye-catcher.

Nami took the burden of saving the village entirely on herself out of fear of anyone else getting involved and getting hurt, albeit for her sake or by joining her effort to steal money from dangerous people. This arc in the live action had a lot cut out unfortunately so some things don't add up as well, but that is the gist of it
Some people misinterpret Nami stabbing her arm as her trying to remove her tattoo. I think it's more that she was so enraged that she wanted to hurt Arlong, and the closest she could get was harming the symbol of him on her arm.
The lesson here is sometimes people take on too much by themselves and are afraid to ask for help. Sometimes it takes more strength to ask for help than it does to over-burden yourself and face things alone. And sometimes when you try to face things alone, you get stuck in that hole and it becomes harder to ask people for help. The Anime does it waaaaaaaaay better but the Live Action still did a good job

I think there is more to why Nami did not tell anyone about why she made the deal. Of course there is she did it to save her community and her sister along with trying to sell her story. I also believe she thinks it was her fault her adopted mother got killed. When she bolts out of the hiding place asking why ex-marine mother did not lie about them I think she believed that she told the pirates that because she was trying to make a point about being honest. I think Nami took it to heart that it was her actions that got her new mother killed. So part of doing it secretively was to alienate her self and punish herself while trying to make things right. It was a personal thing to ask for no help to right things. Also she did not want to risk any more of those she cared about. So its a combination of reasons why she did not want to tell anyone the truth. In some ways that is her lesson. To be honest and tell the truth. Each character seems to have that moment where they must face their one true flaw.

Nami just hid all the 100 million berry under the tree. She was ready to give it to Arlong.
Nezumi is just a local east blue marine captain. (low rank)
Then Arlong screwed her by giving Nezumi a hint.
By so bribing the marines, he is hindering Nezumi to report to the marine headquarter in the grandline that would send one of three admirals who are arguably or not stronger than even Mihawk.

The fishman and slavery storyline goes a lot deeper and is pretty dark, there are just some seeds planted here. One Piece is considered a masterpiece because during this very long story you pretty much go through most civilizations and political systems who also exist or existed in our world and everything is connected and planned very well from the start. You will be mindblown on how good it gets.
The powerlevels and scales are a little bit higher in the anime version compared to the live action at this point and they get pretty crazy later, however they will never reach crazy dbz levels and so far they also didn’t reach naruto shippuden levels

  • @Pterrordon12

The comparison is probably closer to the beginning of One Piece is like original Dragon Ball not Z. You might see a character here or there who has a power level like DBZ but the main crew is just starting their journey. Also, "power scaling" doesn't work too well in One Piece, like Mihawk says in Episode 5 "Fighting isn't all about strength." This is how someone like Usopp can stay still make contributions to the team even though he isn't glowing and shooting lasers out of his hands. It's probably a more Marvel approach where not all superpowers are equal but that doesn't negate their usefulness. Luffy isn't the strongest, and he isn't unbeatable, that's part of who he is.

Nami saved up her stash to give all at once and buried it away from Arlong because she never fully trusted him. She made the deal as a kid with no other choice so she was clinging to the hope that he would honor the deal because by the time she was old enough she had no choice but to see the plan through. That’s why she says earlier in the episode “we don’t lie about money on this crew.” She HAS to believe that or all her hard work would be for nothing, but she deep inside she knows better.
Also, Nami not telling her sister makes sense to me. What would Nojiko have done if she knew? She would have done everything she could to help, and Arlong would have tormented each of them to control the other. Nami knew she was basically selling herself into slavery, and didn’t want to do the same to her sister.

She seem a bit narrowminded and don't seem to understand the heart of the series at all, to be fair the LA cut off some details and made changes that makes less sense so I can understand some of the confution, the anime/manga does it better, the OG is better at portraying emotion and motivation.

Though the anime/manga is much different as they knew Nami was trying to help them, even in the Live Action it makes sense for her to keep it a secret. Arlong is cold blooded when it comes to humans, if he or any of his men overheard a conversation or even just a rumor that people knew what Nami was doing then he would use those peoples lives in his plot against her. Nami is very sensitive about the lives of her friends and family, she couldnt handle the idea of losing them because of something SHE did.

Don't let yourself fall into Power Scaling. Thats a stupid childish trope. DBZ has nothing when it comes to story after Cell Saga. Its fools getting stronger and stronger thats it. That stained the Shone Genre for so long, that Oda really went away from for OnePiece.
