      There is this children’s book series from the 90s in Japan called Kaidan Restaurant or Thriller Restaurant where the concept is, you go into a restaurant to listen to scary stories. And each restaurant usually has a little backstory, mostly a tragic one about not taking life for granted or the horrors of war etc. Baratie is very in line with those restaurants, I wonder if Oda read them for inspiration

    A subtle detail I never noticed until now, whenever Zoro starts to insult Sanji, Sanji smiles before firing back. He's used to trading barbs with Patti and Zeff aboard the Baratie, so Zoro's disrespect is actually nostalgic for him and puts him at ease. Nice subtle bit of characterization

    One of the more genius ways that Zeff and Garp lay out their individual beliefs (Young guns vs Old Guard) is in their choices of beverage. Zeff mentions letting wine going to long it'll sour (a reference to him and Garp getting "sour" as they get older) and that life and adventure are best enjoyed by and when young. Zeff simply counters with "Or you could serve whiskey." Which, as you know, gets *better* with age. Brilliant breakdown of their ideologies by talking about two types of alcohol.

    nami telling arlong to drop luffy in the water was the way she saw that he could survive... since arlong was about to bite open his neck... which he absolutely could die from.

  • @telapathetic9944
    @telapathetic9944 6 месяцев назад +87

    They briefly brush over why Nami trusts the deal with Arlong. During the poker game she says "You know we don't lie about money on this crew" they focus on it a bit more in the anime and manga but Arlong's crew is basically platformed on 2 ideas: 1. Fishman are the superior species and 2. when it comes to matters of money you don't lie and you don't break your word. While it may have been a bit naive to assume Arlong would keep his word, he did for years. I don't think Arlong ever thought she'd be able to get that much money and when it finally happened Nami had proven too valuable to not be under his control.

    • @Philweasel
      @Philweasel 6 месяцев назад +6

      It's a great moment that completely punctures Arlong's pride and superiority, that he makes a big deal about his rules and honor, yet almost casually breaks his accord with Nami the second it suits him.
      He's not a "Mhaha, you shouldn't have trusted me" guy, he talks a big game about his dignity and pride as a fishman yet ultimately he's little better than Nezumi.

    • @ms-literary6320
      @ms-literary6320 6 месяцев назад +6

    Emily Rudd (Nami) is such a damn good actress. You can see the pain in her eyes, every time she (Nami) is conflicted. When walking away from Luffy at the village when she is collecting the tribute, when walking away from Luffy after Arlong dropped him in the water and a few other times in prior episodes.

  • @stalhein62
    @stalhein62 6 месяцев назад +27

    They did change a few things in this adaptation - Nojiko and the rest of the village knew about the deal Nami made, Nojiko got shot (non-fatally) when Nezumi stole the money, and the reason Nojiko got her tattoos was so Nami would feel less bad about the Arlong one she was forced to get.

    • @ashleypenn7845
      @ashleypenn7845 5 месяцев назад +1

      Also that the reason the villagers kept trying to drive Nami off wasn't that they resented her, its that they didn't want her throwing away her future for their sake. They'd rather she cut ties with Arlong and be free than enslave herself to him on their behalf.

    For me the absolute best acting of the series is done by Emily Rudd as Nami in this episode. She crushes it throughout. But it's the scene when the corrupt Marines are confiscating her money that hits the hardest for me. That's the scream of someone that sacrificed her own conscience and ability to sleep at night for that money. And it's that performance that explains why she didn't tell her sister. Her sister would have tried to help her, and she didn't want anyone else dirtying themselves trying to help her do all the terrible things she did to try and free her village.

    If Arlong had ripped Luffy's throat out, he definitely would have died.
    Believe it or not, in the anime, everything hits so much harder. Between the extra time you have spent with the characters getting emotionally invested in them, and everything they cut out of the live action, and the minor changes they made it ends up hitting 3 times harder. Especially what they cut out. Suffice it to say that what happened in the backstory and modern day had a lot of parallels in the anime, so it had a ptsd aspect to it as well.

    One of the most famous scenes in the entire series! People were so happy when this dropped in the Netflix version - they did the manga AND anime justice and performed this scene to PERFECTION. Check it out online if you want to see just how much time and effort they put into this show. The live action was absolutely amazing - shows what happens when you hire and involve the literal creator of the entire story to craft the production into exactly how he envisioned a real life version would go.

    One thing I’m kind of upset the live action changed was that in the anime, the other villagers actually found out about Nami’s deal a long time ago, but pretended that they didn’t know and kept acting like they hated her because they were worried that if she felt like they were counting on her, she’d never leave Arlong even if it got to be too much for her

    An aspect of Arlong's character that they didn't explain much in the live action: The thing he values most in the world is money. It's a genuine ideology on his part that money is the only thing that can be relied on, and therefore he would never break an agreement involving money; he'd rather die. Nami is aware of this which is why she agreed to the deal. It's also why he used Nezumi to get around it (he never broke the deal, since Nami was never able to give him the money).

    That you felt kinda sorry for Arlong for a moment really highlights the actors performance. You'll learn more about that like 600 Anime episodes down the line but Arlong is one of these people who have been radicalised by their own experiences.

    Sanji gets it. He understands the power of a well prepared meal, that has that extra ingredient of caring. Regardless of race, sex or social status, he has the key for all those barriers.
    That chat between Garp and Zeff never happened in the manga/anime, but it was very much appreciated. That is the type of thing you get when you have fans behind the camera and in the writers room.

    It is debatable if Arlong would have honored his deal if Nami brought the money. He has a lot of pride and one of the big reasons he hates humans so much is because of their ease in lying from his POV. But he needs Nami's cartography skills so much he may still betray her by breaking his promise.
    We will never know because by using Ñezumi to take away the money before she could give it to Arlong, he could betray her without breaking his promise.

    The acting in this show is incredible. One Piece is the result of the Acting, Directing, and Writing perfectly colliding.
    Nami screaming with her head in the dirt as the Marines took her money that she took years to obtain felt so real.

    And haircut very slowly warms to the audience. Or at least is becoming more palatable.

    Another fine reaction, Angela! So glad to see you loving this story, and these characters.
    The "long game" is indeed a major part of Nami's story -- and in the comics, it wasn't just her playing it, but her entire village as well. In Oda-sensei's original story, Nami was brave enough to confide in her sister about her deal with Arlong, but soon after Nojiko told everyone else in Coco Village. They all decided to go along with Nami's plan by pretending to hate her for betraying them, and by putting up with all of Arlong's abuses without complaint, hoping to survive patiently until she bought their freedom. The villagers' part in the long game, though, wasn't revealed until Captain Nezumi confiscated Nami's earnings.
    Speaking of whom -- you wondered about the weird design of Nezumi's hat. Those are supposed to be mouse ears. In Japanese, the word 'nezumi' means 'mouse' -- or more appropriately for his character, it can mean 'rat'.
    I'm impressed that you're able to feel some sympathy for Arlong, since his characterization in live action makes that a bit difficult. The comics and anime have revealed more of his backstory, and there's much in it that's tragic. I won't spoil anything, but Arlong has hinted at some of it, and based on that you can see why he hates humans so much. What doesn't come through so well in live action is that Arlong does have a sense of honour -- towards his own kind, that is. Humans, however, are free game to be tricked, used and murdered.
    And as I may have mentioned before, Luffy's charisma is a major part of the story, and its charm. I'm sure you'll see more of that going forward.
    See you in the finale!

    People often wonder how Nami could trust Arlong to keep his word. And it's like yeah no duh he wouldn't. But she went to him as a desperate child. Trying to find anyway to save those she loved. And she couldn't let go of that. Cause by the time she'd be of the age to realize that he likely wouldn't keep his word she was already deep in. She'd already given up so much and done so much. Her whole life and ever act she took was an effort to try and free her home.

    This scene was the moment everyone realized how powerful the story Oda was telling was actually going to be. The One Piece character backstories throughout series get sadder and sadder and sadder, never happier. Really recommend watching the anime or reading the manga afterwards to that part if you want more info. I love the live action and how they did it, even most of the changes. But a lot of "side stories" are more detailled in the manga and anime, Bellemere for example. In the live action you could kinda think it was dumb of her to not simply lie about her daughters. Well, you get more info about that in the manga.
    But prepare for more crying, too 😅
