I think this was a masterpiece, but I also think it's targeting a feeling of isolation and dysphoria that a lot of people just don't have. As such, it really isn't for everyone. I think maybe the more well-adjusted and happy you were as a kid, or even are as an adult, the more this movie might bounce off you. So I'd bear that in mind when you rewatch it in a few years after everyone tells you it's a sleeper for the best film of 2024 ;)
I'm glad you were able to have that experience with the movie and it resonated with you as much as it did, because I unfortunately did not vibe with it at all. Totally understand that every movie isn't gonna work for every person, and this is just one of those cases for me. Thanks for watching!
As someone with body dysmorphia, you shouldn't need to already have that to understand it, it should put you in the head of someone with body dysmorphia
I’m glad you commented this, because I made that very point to my buddy last night when talking about the film. I can’t relate to much of what these specific characters are going through, but this film should have the ability to make me experience 0.1% of what it’s like. Missed the mark for me in that regard!

I think that it's tap into the awkwardness that happen during puberty and trying to find oneself during that time period. Granted, it hits closer to home to those who are part of queer/trans communities. The horror comes from how repressed we can become for fear of being our true authentic selves.
Completely agree with everything you just said, unfortunately the way the story was structured and the intentionally over-awkwardness of the characters didn't give me a lot to latch onto personally. Glad to see you seemed to enjoy it more than I did though!
This is certainly a movie that won’t be for everyone, but I think you do bring up a very good point in which how just because a movie is visually appealing or experimental, doesn’t mean the movie as a whole is good. I completely agree with that general statement💯
Yeah I feel like critics have become too generous to movies that try something new nowadays, even though we get plenty of films that try new things that are a total swing and a miss. Don't really understand the overwhelming praise for this one. Thanks for watching, TJ!

I Saw The TV Glow wasn’t made for me, but I still found a lot to enjoy in it. Between how The Pink Opaque looked/felt, the soundtrack, and the cinematography, it made it worth it enough for me.
But you’re right, the monologues and dialogue are rough, and the story is asking the watcher to do too much work. I don’t mind thinking but I shouldn’t be thinking the entire second half of the movie. Can’t imagine watching it again, but I didn’t hate my time with it.
Worth a watch to me, just go in with an open mind. It delivered on what I was expecting and the atmosphere was strong, created a lot of nostalgia for anyone watching late night shows as a kid
The atmoshpere and the nostalgia were the best parts of the film for me, compltely agree with you on that. And yeah I would still suggest people always check stuff out for themselves, as this is just my personal experience with the film. You never know what you're going to connect with. It was obvious what the message was. What i had problems with was the ending.
There were parts where i was super bored. I am more into the action flicks. I am not sure if it was just the lack of bullets flying and people getting kicked just didn't do it for me. I get what the boring parts were attempting.
However there is one long monologue that took me out. I kept thinking, "isn't this a movie? Why are you narrating to me when you could just show it?" I am guessing it is a budget thing.
The movie has something but it could also have been better.

Haha you’re probably right. I’ve rated 2024 movies lower than this one, but I honestly think it’s because all of the early buzz made me think this one was gonna be the real deal. I’ve been trying to find more reviews that mention all of this! I’m glad so many people loved it but I’m surprised I’m only seeing glowing reviews (lol). I’m generally not into atmospheric horror (I hated skinamarink more than any other hyped up movie in my life), and I think if it was described as that I at least wouldn’t have been so disappointed by the lack of story. It is visually great and the music was great but I was really missing the plot. It had pieces of an amazing movie but didn’t quite get there for me. I do understand that might be because I don’t relate to the underlying metaphor though

As you’ve said in the dozens of other comments you left on this video, the underlying message of this movie is not hard to understand. It’s all about the struggle of coming to grips with sexuality and identity. Just because it has a message that might resonate with some people does not also mean that the movie should get a pass for (in my opinion) having poor execution and unsatisfying performances. To assume that everyone that didn’t enjoy the movie as much as you did must not have been able to understand the point of the film is kind of ridiculous…
I would have appreciated at least some rumination on what the movie was trying to say or the themes. I understand that the movie may be less relatable to some viewers but I didn’t think it was so much so that it would be indecipherable to them.
Totally respect that you would be looking for that kind of analysis from a review regarding this movie. In my defense, I did say that it's a film all about finding one's true identity and becoming the best version of yourself, and that it will mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people. Since I have no personal experience or expertise around what is being dissected regarding gender identity, I didn't delve into that topic at all even though it's definitely present in the film. I haven't even heard anything about this one. There are only a handful of A24 movies that I enjoy. Ex Machina is definitely high on that list.

They kept mentioning sleep away camp so I figured out the allgory but even as an artist who does trippy vintage art myself I wasnt feeling this film.I honestly think they should produce some music videos though cus the filming looks like a 90s early 2000s grungy, alternative , and indndie rock feel.great review .
Im a fan of Skinamarink and Outerwaters so i may end up liking this. Im okay with expriemental films thay lets your experiences film in the blanks as long as they are made well. You said low effort though so ill go in with low expectations

I’m with you, I will always appreciate a24 for their different stories, vibes, and the way they shoot films, acting, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a boring watch.

The one thing i took away from this movie was Justice Smith has a huge adams apple.
I'll have to wait until his next movie to confirm or deny, because I'm not watching this one again...
I thought I was the only one who was questioning during the movie that they are overly obsessed with it an non stop talk about The Pink Opaque. Did the main characters have any other interests? Also it seems like one of those movies that demand a second watch deliberately since it explains very little about what tf is going on
You really missed it I’d say. If you can bear a rewatch it’s absolutely worth it. I don’t want to spoil. But the characters are not obsessed with the show like you think they are
I promise it’s not unclear about what’s going on. Everything is explained in movie. Just a lot is small details that I missed even the first time.
The only reason I appreciated this movie was because I knew what to expect from the director’s first movie. I hated WAGTTWF, but I Saw the TV Glow felt like a soft remake of it-and way better made.
Had I walked into this one blind, I probably would’ve hated it too, but knowing what to expect made me appreciate it more.
I really want to see this movie, but I truly think people praise movies just because other people praise it. The movie should have been called The Pink Opaque thats a great title. Great review and Heriditary is my favorite from A24 it is top tier.

I don't know if you've seen the film yet, but all I can tell you is that this is not one of those movies that is praised just because it's praised. I literally cried at this film, something I rarely do. It seems like a very polarizing experience.

@@TheReelRapNerd For movies this year, probably Abigail and Love Lies Bleeding (which kind of just has horror adjacent moments). Not a great year for the genre so far!

Its a direct ripoff of the creepypasta Candle Cove. Syfy channel put it in their Channel Zero series.
I saw a couple other comments mentioning this. Is it worth the watch? I remember seeing some posters when it came out, but I never dove in...Thanks for checking out the video!

I walked in believing it was going to be a horror movie.. I enjoyed the nostalgic visuals, but I left the theater feeling so trolled with the raving reviews it received. I was confused.
Cause it’s not about nostalgia
I could have completely misunderstood the film, but it seemed like it was trying to say that things will never feel as real or important as they did when you were a child, that life is going to get worse and worse until you die so you may as well k!11 yourself and hope you get a better afterlife. It seemed to say that you will spend your life trying to relive that part of childhood where you genuinely believed that you would be as important or powerful as the people on TV, have never ending bonds with others, but the reality is that you will feel awful and unfulfilled until you reach the end of your uninteresting and meek life. Frankly, I came away from the movie finding it depressing, hopeless, and a waste of potential. It had great artistic direction and cool themes like replacing spirituality with media, or media worship in general. Alternate realities and determining whether to believe the metaphysical or not are also interesting concepts. I just wish it was not so depressing. It showed only two endings for humans to take: self delete, or have an awkward and uninteresting life filled with regret for the things you didn't decide to do while you had the chance. What BS.

I only saw the thumbnail but everything you said I agree with. I do love the look and the music being very good but story and what the progress of this story just felt too weird. Felt it was trying to be weird to just be weird. Very very very well said and put together Sully 👍🏻

I am not the target audience for this movie but it was marketed to me as if I was. I went in thinking it would be like a nostalgic horror film with stranger things vibes and maybe some poltergeist Easter eggs (because of the tv). I saw last night and I am pretty irked that I wasted my time and money on it. There were so many ways that they could have made it horror like but it was just confusing. When the credits rolled I thought it was going to be a show this entire time and that would be the twist. But it just randomly ended and I was left annoyed I wasted my evening watching it. After it I read it was about being trans/queer and I did not catch this at all. I thought when he was in a dress that Maddie bullied him into wearing it because she seemed like one of those bossy friends we all seem to have as kids. The music was cool though. The trailer is deceiving and they should have not tricked people into going to see it. Because of that deception i feel like it was some money grab which pisses me off even more.

Watch Channel Zero: Candle Cove. This is not an original idea in any way. The only thing he did was over do the neons space light vibe. Almost like an 90’s alien invasion vibe. The monologue were annoying and Pink Opaque to me is lazy when the original was Candle Cove.
What did you think of the other Channel Zero seasons?

I absolutely loved this movie until the ending. The way it ended was absolutely awful and didnt give a satisfying conclusion. I wanted to see season 6.
Yeah the ending definitely left a lot of people in my theater scratching their heads. Like I mentioned in the review, I'm all for leaving things up to the audience's interpretation but some of the stuff in here really doesn't seem to have an explanation no matter how deep ypu dive. Everything Everywhere All At Once just didn't resonate with me. It had all the elements I usually enjoy. And a cast whose previous work I have enjoyed, but when put together, it just didn't jive for me. Not a very clear-cut explanation, I know. After writing this, I am going to rewatch it.
@SullyStreams My favorite film is Cloud Atlas. I feel the same way towards it as you do about Everything Everywhere All At Once. It was and is one of the greatest movie experiences of my life. I think it's a masterful work of filmmaking. I am very interested in reading your thoughts about Cloud Atlas.

@@willburbur3793, someone can simultaneously understand a film, and find elements of the film to be bad. That's what real humans do, as opposed to 1 dimensional mannequins like the characters in "I Saw the TV Glow".

You can say that but I truly believe that I understood the message the movie was setting out to convey, I just don’t think the film was structured and made in a way that was all that impressive. Glad you got more out of it than I did though!

justice smith, slack jawed and dead eyed, bored looking for 90 minutes. I waited and waited for the movie to kick in, then the credits rolled.

Damn it. My Philip K Dick-X-Files ‘90s movie got ruined by damn Wokeism. Just look up the director and you'll see what *he* made this to be about. You're welcome. Just rewatch The X-Files, Donnie Darko, and maybe some Bladerunner or even PKD’s Electric Dreams on Prime if you want your ‘90s nostalgia kick without the politics.
The movie wasn't good. The soundtrack was the only decent thing.
It gets raving reviews like the Acolyte gets a 90% on rotten tomatos. Hit the correct boxes and you get bonus points.
That said, I didn't dislike the movie, but I also didn't like it. The projection of the director is very visible.

This movie is just as much about being Trans and queer escapism as it is about any and almost all adults who have mid life crises
The fear that everything you held dear as a kid fades and that you live your life so fast yet it fells unfulfilling. Like you wasted your life away
Finally, an authentic review! I recently watched the film and rate it 1 out of 5. I am gay and have worked in a drag bar with several transgendered individuals. I have dated transgendered males. I still did not extract the director's significance of the production (without having watched an explanation of it by a different RUclipsr)! Originally, I thought that Maddie was schizophrenic and Owen suffered from major depression. They both ignored their symptoms and paid the prices for it. In my opinion, the movie is overly abstract and the plot is too convoluted for the average viewer!

i can tell how much you lack empathy. this movie means a lot to people already so its only gonna intensify in the coming years. i bet a decade from now you'll say you've always loved this movie. thats the problem with "reviews" if thats what you think this is. you dont allow yourself room to change, you immediately post an opinion and then feel compelled to stick with it. stay rigid and confined, you look good there.
I legitimately say in my review that I acknowledge that this film will mean a lot of things to a lot of different people, and that I always commend filmmakers for taking big creative swings for the fences even if they don’t work for me. How is that lacking empathy? I explained everything I didn’t enjoy about the movie in the most respectful way I possibly could while still keeping my voice intact. It sounds more that you’re upset that I didn’t agree with you than how I actually said what I said. Why even look for reviews if you’re gonna let anyone that doesn’t agree with your opinion trigger you? At that point, there’s no reason to engage in discussion about what other people think about any piece of art if they all think the same thing. Glad you loved the movie, but yikes…this comment.

I saw this with my girlfriend yesterday and we both loved it, having about the opposite reaction to you. But one thing we both said shortly after was that we don’t know a single other person in our lives that would enjoy this movie. So it’s not surprising seeing the polarity of it online.
But I’m of the mind that if you go into making a movie for everyone you end up making a movie for no one. I love introspective pieces that are experimental in nature and don’t always have to follow a structured narrative. I movies like this are what gives film flavor and promote conversation differing perspectives. And even tho my girlfriend and I both enjoyed it we came out with completely different takes about what meant what or what really happened which I love when movies can pull that off.

It’s worth mentioning that going into it neither of us knew anything about this movie. No trailers, no plot description, basically blind except a 5 second ad and the poster. I’ve heard that the advertisements portrayed it as more of a spooky horror movie than it actually was. But I do think going in with almost zero knowledge helped the enjoyment of the surrealism of it all.
So glad you loved it. But may I say that I do not think there’s room for multiple interpretations. The movie could not be more clear about what is going on, and if you don’t get it, you missed the obvious hints the movie gave
