2 Ways to Build a Dragonfruit Trellis for Growing Dragon Fruit in Containers

- Today I'll show you how to build a dragon fruit trellis for growing dragonfruit in containers. We'll be building 2 different support structures to give the climbing dragonfruit cactus a sturdy structure to climb up - one of the designs will virtually last a lifetime.
For the first trellis that I'm building, I'll be trying to create a dragonfruit tree, by using a strong branch and attaching it securely into the pot so it can't move at all. The second structure uses a recycled plastic fencepost and will be attached very securely to the pot.
We'll then plant some dragonfruit cuttings into the containers so I can train the dragonfruit up the trellis structure.
Dragon fruit are a climbing jungle cactus that flowers at night and produces a delicious tropical fruit. They can be grown in tropical and subtropical climates, or in colder areas if protected in a greenhouse or kept away from cold, frost and damp conditions.
They can easily be propagated from seeds and from cuttings.
These plants are also known as Pitaya , Pitahaya , Stenocereus , Hylocereus undatus , Hylocereus costaricensis , Hylocereus megalanthus , Cactaceae.
Materials I used for the second trellis design:
1x 50L Plastic Pot (This was the biggest size I could get, but you can definitely go bigger if you can).
1 x 1.5m long Recycled plastic fence post - Use untreated timber as an alternative.
90x45 Timber (2"x4") - 2 pieces at 550mm (1.8ft); 3 pieces @ 460mm (1.5ft).
17 x 100mm long bugle head batten screws (otherwise use what you have - can be shorter screws than this).
1 x Stainless steel threaded rod
4 x Stainless steel washers
4 x Stainless steel nuts
Hessian (burlap) material to attach to plastic post will allow your dragon fruits aerial roots to attach to the pole more easily and increase uptake of any water or foliar spray you provide the plant with. I will look at trying this out when I can get my hands on some hessian :)

I built a trellis from recycled wood and it looks terrible, but quirky. I have some pecan branches that I was going to carve into walking sticks, but after seeing your natural-look trellis I think I may use them for a trellis. Thanks for the inspiration.

Awesome! Love the natural wood design. My only issue here in windy Oklahoma in the States is the pot will blow over. So I need to adapt your design to a nice heavy ceramic that I also can bring in the garage during our frigid winters.

So I love this idea. I have a huge dragon fruit that was attached to the wall. It just fell over yesterday! I am so sad as it really took down most of it. Therefore, I don't want to reattach it to the wall as even those structures failed. I'm into making the fence post idea as I also think your wood idea won't last (sorry, they just get so big!). Anyway, hoping to recover most of it. Good video

Well build. Note that dragon fruit plants get heavy. The other 3 options are to grow them in strong rooted tree or just trellis less or up a wall or gate. :-)
Do you leave your dragon fruit outside during winter? I live in NZ too. I just brought 2 dragon fruit. Very happy find your videos.
This is the first year trying leaving outdoors. I have them under the eaves of my house, so they have overhead protection and its North facing as well. So far so good, will see how they do :)

Thanks mate for the video my Dragon fruit setup a disaster I’m using the tall noise proof fence to climb it and its not ideal it could take 12 months to grow 2.4m. I think your method is a great idea off to Bunnings this weekend to find that recycled material pole cause with the tree branch method it could be subject to termite attack and there goes the structure.
If you’re in NZ the posts I use are called future posts and I got them through farm source shop, but there are other stockists as well. Otherwise I’m sure other countries have some alternatives. Good luck! 😊

I used 50 litre pots which is the minimum size I'd recommend for growing them like this :)

Hey, no I don’t have these unfortunately. They got a bit neglected when I was busy getting my house built and moving etc. Now that I’m settled I have much more capability to care for my plants better, so will probably give them another go at some point

What are the winter temps like where you live? I was gifted some small dragon fruit cacti and am interested in keeping them. I’m in the southern United States so most of the year is hot but I’m afraid I will need to keep them inside for the dead of winter...
Our winters get as cold as about -2 or -3 celcius (27F). I'm planning to keep mine protected under cover in winter and eventually house them in a greenhouse

Hey Brett, thanks heaps, glad you're enjoying them. Yep they should do okay with a bit of protection, like facing north under the eaves of your house etc. Keep them protected from frost and too much rain. @@dougleton1981 only reason was that the ones on the plastic trellis are a cutting grown variety and not the type I grew from seed. The branch actually sadly snapped during a massive wind storm recently, so the other one is of course more durable and works well. I might include the footage in a future video. Wrapping the pole with hessian material is good too as the dragonfruit holds better and doesn't slip around

@@TheKiwiGrower Hey. In Poland, we have a climate that does not allow cultivation in the ground. The only option is to grow greenhouses and place plants outside during the spring and summer season.
Do you recommend growing dragon fruit in pots or directly into the ground and i do appreciate your opinion on this as im really enjoying your channel with all the tips on growing etc as you seem to have a wealth of knowledge from seed to plate plus you explain everything really well and present your videos with clarity so thank you from across the ditch 🙂👍🇦🇺🐨

Love the plastic post trellis We have most of this stuff at work , quite often in the various recycle bins, I could make this from.
Just a question do you think these would survive in the Wairarapa ?
We get a mild frost in winter -2 at the most (normally) would that kill it ?

how big of a pot should you use if you were going to use a 4 x 4 for your trellis?
I would go for at least 50L, or 60L if you can get one that big. :)

Mine a in single plant per pot to be able to easily move them into heated green house April-may for winter

Yep I am in that area. Yes I’ve had these indoors in Winter. This year I’m going to leave some under the north facing eaves of my house to avoid frost and excess water and see how they do

How is the wooden stem holding up after 8 month?
Can you use treated 4x4 fence post from Bunnings or Mitre 10?
It would work for this structure but maybe just do research on using treated timber.
Many people avoid it as chemicals are used to treat the wood, however some info now suggests it’s safe for growing around. I tend to stick on the side of caution and avoid treated timber being close to plants that grow food.
Try and find some studies on it to see what it suggests. You could also look at wrapping the base of the wood in plastic if leaching was a concern. But then some people suggest plastics can leech.
Heard someone talk about dragonfruit aerial roots not liking to attach to treated wood too though not sure how true that is and you could probably just wrap the post in hessian or simalar to get around that.
Sorry if that wasn’t much help but without having seen conclusive evidence I wouldn’t want to say strongly yes or no.

I used the branch method and in two years it rots and fell over and that's because of water obviously

If we use a plastic container, then it may break due to sunlight. What to do for thatttt.......can you show how to grow them in clay pots and cement pots pls...
Hey, you could screw some blocks of wood around the base of your pole to act as feet which would balance the pole and hold it upright :) Hope that helps
