    Thank you! Thank you for calling out the half cross is not being full coverage. I did just watch a video where the host recommended using the tent stitch as a way to go much faster. I had never heard the word tent stitch used in Crosstitch, only in needlepoint, so I had to look it up and when I realized what she was doing my first thought was that can't possibly give you enough coverage.

    Hi Theresa!! I just want to say THANK YOU for this series…I’ve been stitching off and on for a little bit (my Grandma taught me when I was about 10 years old) and then didn’t really pick it up, seriously, until just recently. Your videos are a BLESSING!! Granted, a lot of things I knew but others I didn’t and these apps - oh Lord have mercy, what a blessing so as not to manually calculate design area, edging, etc. I am NOT a math person AT ALL. So I just wanted to say you’re a GEM for doing this!! I love your channel and know it’s very time consuming, but thank you for all that you do - I greatly appreciate it!! May you and your family have a wonderful holiday season, stay healthy! 💕. Thanks again!

I’m using a 14 count Aida at the moment , with 2 floss strands but some of the threads are a bit thinner as they show some canvas , I may have to do some with 3....

    Excellent point -- pretty fabric doesn't matter! This was/is extremely helpful! Thanks for explaining the gridding! I looked up my preferred chart and it's actually a kit with 14 ct Aida and I'm not sure I want that, and I'm afraid if I change the fabric I won't have enough thread in the kit so I may go back to the drawing board.... On the other hand, it may be worthwhile to pay $25 for the chart if I can use the fabric and threads elsewhere....

The instructions vary per colour from two strands full cross to five strands half cross. XD At the end I also have backstitches, couching and french knots to do to finish it off. XD Thank god it's only 10 inches by 15 inches.

    Aida is perfect for full coverage, that's why Dimentions designs recommend it. I'm not new in Cross stitching but still linen drives me crazy... I like the Aida better than the others. With needles, I used size 22 Tapestry needle for two strands of floss...

    • @hannahaidastitcher8098
      @hannahaidastitcher8098 5 лет назад +2

      I love aida, and I really don't like the idea that you "graduate" to evenweave/linen at some point. I don't feel you lose any detail on aida, you just have to stand a step or two back from it. When it's finished a project, you're never 6 inches away from it anyway!

    • @textymctexterson3154
      @textymctexterson3154 5 лет назад +2

      I was intimidated, at one point, by evenweave but having stitched on it for two of my pieces and having the squares there for fractional stitches is what won me over. I’ll still use Aida, but linen and evenweave are much softer and a joy to work with.

  • @sueadams9364

    This is a perfect tutorial on fabric choices. I have done quite a bit of stitching and I have felt like I 'graduated' from aida to even weave. However, for my first full coverage I do believe I will use aida. Most of the aida I have used is pretty stiff...do you know of a brand that isn't stiff? Thanks again and can't wait for Part 3!

It’s the one I have as my first cross stitch project is a heart shape made of ribbon and flowers a champagne glasses cake slices but it has a big solid white UN stitched area in the middle of the heart. So the actual center is nothing fir many stitches either direction

  • @brittneywilson9751

    I don't understand what all the fuss is about with a Aida 20 or 25 or 14... Why does it matter? The project you order from HAED tells you do it on Aida 25 with 2 strands. I'm sure they say that because it will give you the best results for your overall project right? And I wish I knew when you say your doing one over one or tent stitch or whatever...when you rattle that off it sounds like Chinese to me. What are you saying? To me cross stitch is little X's of thread put together to make a pixelated picture of something. Is that not right? Or am I thinking too basic?
    Don't get me wrong your video is FANTASTIC but I still feel like I'm a bit in over my head. I just ordered my first HAED Secret Garden by JW normal size today and I'm patiently waiting to give this a go. I also do diamond painting, knitting, crochet, a bit of weaving a bit of spinning and any other crafts I can get my hands on but I've only ever completed really simple small cross stitch as a little girl so...now I want to move up in my skill. *Fingers crossed*

    • @TeresaLittleStitcher
      @TeresaLittleStitcher  3 месяца назад +1

      So, one over one means one thread over one square of fabric. Two over one would be two strands of thread over one square and two over two means two strands of thread over two squares. Tent stitch is also known as a half stitch - so you just do one leg of the cross and can be a faster way to complete full coverage projects like HAEds. Happy stitching!

    Hi thanks for your videos I wanna purchase the HAED village bookstore but it says 25 count could I do it on a 18 count I need to see the holes as clearly as I can

    • @TeresaLittleStitcher
      @TeresaLittleStitcher  5 лет назад +1

      Hey Dee, Yes of course you can do on 18 count - you will just need to calculate your fabric for the 18 count instead of the 25 count as the finished stitching will be bigger on 18 count. Also this may alter your required number of skeins for some colours, but not by a lot so I would use the threads that are calculated on the charted version of 25 count and then get any that start to run low if or when the time comes.

    I love the loop stitch when starting a new piece of floss. But when parking and moving to a new area, it's a HASSEL to re-thread your floss so as to do the loop to begin again. Make sense?

    • @TeresaLittleStitcher
      @TeresaLittleStitcher  3 года назад

      Thank you for your message Kimmi. I love the loop start for 2 strand projects. When parking threads you have to re-thread the floss anyhow so re-threading is not a problem for me. as the loop start is just to secure the thread in the first place the threads are then just sitting there waiting for the x stitch only. Not sure I understand what you mean by doing the loop again - am I missing what you mean?

  • @kevinmonceaux2101
    @kevinmonceaux2101 5 лет назад +2

    Instead of avoiding the topic of the number of stitches per inch and experiencing undue concern over how hard it is to explain why stitching a pattern with 24 count material will be smaller than stitching the same pattern with 18 count material, why not just explain that that number is the number of stitches per inch? A pattern that's 50 stitches wide stitched on a material that fits 18 stitches per inch will be 2.78 inches wide. The same pattern that's 50 stitches wide stitched on a material that fits 24 stitches per inch will be 2.08 inches wide. Just divide the stitch count of the pattern by the number of stitches per inch of the material of choice. Someone who isn't afraid of full coverage cross stitch shouldn't be afraid of basic math. Now the question is, should someone who isn't afraid of basic math be afraid of full coverage cross stitch? I'm really enjoying this series. I got started on a beginner needlepoint kit, but didn't get very far. I like the idea of jumping into the deep end and getting started with a small full coverage project instead of a "beginner" kit.

    • @TeresaLittleStitcher
      @TeresaLittleStitcher  5 лет назад

      lol! Kevin I have to admit as I started reading your message I thought I was in for a grilling for not explaining the basic maths of the difference in count and size ... by the end of the message I was chuckling away - so thank you for such a great funny message. I do hope you are not afraid of a little full coverage and join in the fun, just for kicks if nothing else. Go on....... jump in at the deep end :)

    • @kevinmonceaux2101
      @kevinmonceaux2101 5 лет назад

      @@TeresaLittleStitcher I'm glad you were chuckling by the end as intended. And you've just about convinced me to jump in at the deep end.
      I definitely need to follow your advice and do some test stitching. I'm pretty sure when all is said and done that I'd prefer the finer detail of higher stitch count fabric. My old eyes, on the other hand, would prefer something they can actually see. I'll be hitting the half century mark in the near future. And needing new glasses certainly doesn't help the situation. I have already invested in a magnifier lamp. It makes a big difference.
      I'm open to suggestions for other sources for story keeper patterns. Some of the HAED story keeper patters raise their voice at me, but I'm not quite sure if they're actually screaming at me. Some are pretty close. I might just need to browse through them another time or to for one to start screaming at me.

      Tent stitch is one leg of the cross - like a half stitch. One over one or two over one, or two over two refers to the number of strands of thread and how many squares you are stitching over. So, one over one is one thread over one square. Two over one would be two strands of threads over one square. Happy stitching! Xx

      Hi Jennie. If the project is full coverage like the one I show in this video I started in the top left of the chart. Although the design is oval the chart is still on A4 pages so I start on page 1 in the top left corner and off i go 😉

    I've stitched for 30 years and just now tryed 1 over 1. How the HECK do you get one strand to lie correctly? When making an X, the floss would want to go through then look straight along the block. I constantly had to push around the floss on each square to make the X!
    I finally literally threw away the piece and moved down to a smaller count doing 2 over 1

      I think everyone has their way of stitching that is what makes it so enjoyable - but from my own experience I love stitching 1 over 1 and the only time I have seen what you are experiencing is when I pull the thread to hard, where it makes the stitch try to go through the weave. Also if it is a linen it can be to do with which way the weft is going where the fabric threads themselves are weaving over and under. This is where your own stitch direction can matter. The joy of personal preference and how we all like to stitch :)

    Loving this series. Thank you for your time and the details you are discussing. I was stitching in 1990 with a small hoop and did full coverage pieces then. Just recently go back into stitching and the world has changed a bit. Relearning and getting more educated and up to date is interesting. On the easy grid, is the grey line visible once stitching is done? My biggest fear is to put in all the time and effort then find that spoils the piece. Next question is where, what site did you get the floral face from, lovely work.

    Quick question : why is the fabric recommended for that chart 25 count but the stitch says to use 2 strands ?

    • @TeresaLittleStitcher
      @TeresaLittleStitcher  4 года назад +1

      almost all the HAED's are recommended to use 25cnt. they suggest 2 strands for a very full coverage. I personally either prefer 18 count 2 strands or 25 count 1 strand - but it really depends on the person and how they stitch tension.

    • @TeresaLittleStitcher

      lol! Well I lick the end of my floss and then squeeze it with my fingers a few times to make it a little flatter. A good light makes the threading a little easier too :)

    have you ever used variegated thread ? why do they say not to do loop method with variegated fliss

    • @TeresaLittleStitcher
      @TeresaLittleStitcher  3 года назад +2

      Hi Rhonda, I do use variegated threads. The obvious one is my longdog castles in the air. Also the chatelaine used variegated threads. So we don't use a loop method as it stops you getting the full variegation that the thread is meant to make. If you have a thread that goes blue to green for example, if you cut the thread and use 2 sections of the thread laid together you will have a strange that will stitch blue to green, if however you cut the thread and fold it in half and stitch with this it will mute the variegated colours - it is fine if you like a muted blend, but I like others us the variegated thread to get that great change of colours. Hope this helps explain the reasoning, but again you can loop method with them and you will get a totally different look. No right or wrong way, but variegated is designed to stitch 2 stranges of the same thread section.

    Is there a reason why you don’t recommend 14 or 16 count?

    • @TeresaLittleStitcher
      @TeresaLittleStitcher  4 года назад +1

      Hi there! It is not that I do not recommend 14 or 16 count (again all personal preference) I find personally than 18 count fabric has the best coverage with 2 strands allowing for the loop start method. Lower count fabrics like 14 and 16 count generally need more strands of floss to get the coverage. This then requires 3 / 4 strands of floss and then it is more tricky to have your floss lay flat and I personally find it makes my stitches look messy. I find 18 count to be the sweet spot so that is why that is my suggestion in my videos.

  • @cbwoods5166

    I love your videos! But I would not describe 14 count has bigger holes, that means nothing to a newbie. Explain how many stitches per inch. That will cut the confusion down. 14 count is 14 stitches per inch. 18 count is 18 stitches per inch which is more stitches per inch than the 14, which makes the stitch area smaller. When I taught classes I would discuss even weave as looking at it like tic tac toe game makes it so much easier to explain. Trust me , I taught how to do cross stitch. For years😃

      Feel free to explain the technical reasoning for the numbers, here in the comments. I had a lot to squeeze into the video series and this was aimed at total beginners, so some of the tech and advanced information I left out so as not to overwhelm. But the comments section here is for sharing with the community so fill your boots, if you think that more information should be given.
