"LET US SPRAY" Spraying a Rolls-Royce with a Rattle Can

- Part 53 of this never ending series. I want to get some grey spray on this beast.
My biggest challenge yet! Can I FIX a 1988 Rolls Royce Silver Spirit with too many faults to list, there is more wrong with it than right. Will I end up crying into my Connolly leather seats or will this beast live on.
This is the cheapest Rolls Royce in the UK so I wasn't expecting much, hopefully bit by bit with sheer determination and zero skill I will attempt to fix each fault one by one.
This is PART 53 of this series. Every part will be filmed, and I hope to discover the craftmanship that has gone into this 34 year old moving piece of art.

Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince. - Хобби
The duck may be gone but the memories will live on forever immortalised in this series! Great vid Vince
I've missed these so much
Thank you
@@Mymatevincelove the channel keep up the good work
I used to watch this channel when learning to repair electronics when I was slightly younger. Thank you for the good times, Vince.
Rattled cans outside in March ? , That's brave . A surprising finish given the weather 👍
No sense of adventure! I roller painted my Range Rover outside in winter when the weather (and forecast) was great ... but it got so cold in the evening the extension lead for the lead light froze to the gravel! The next day I woke up to a 4inch layer of snow! It thawed a few days later and left a paint surface like rough blue orange peel! I roughly flatted and recoated it and it looked great! I swore on that day I'd never by a motor based on what it looked like!
@@andygardiner6526 Flattened it ? That must have taken an age. Should have been patient and waited for better weather. Roller painted 😂
Do you want a fun driver for family outings and car shows or just a trailer queen for snob appear?
My grandfather did paint and body work professionally for years. After retiring he loved to put pinstripes down all his cars. He LOVED the decals when they came out because it made his life way easier. Decal pinstripes allow a lot more forgiveness and are way easier. Don't even bother with trying to paint them.
Were they decals or vinyl tape? Here in the states, vinyl tape is used a lot.
@@alext8828 Not 100% sure to be honest... He just always talked about how you really couldn't tell from 15-20 feet away.
@@alext8828Decals and vinyl tape are the same thing, a decal is just vinyl tape pre cut
@@brad9529 No. Google it.
Get a clip on spray handle, makes holding can and guiding spray pattern 100% easier. 🎉
Definitely DECAL rather than paint. I will be interested to see what it is like with some decent polish on it as well. Great stuff Vince
Vince your way too hard on yourself, I think like many other follow and viewers that you have done an amazing incredible job love every video you do and have loved this series keep up the fantastic work 👍🏻
Loving the videos and please stop apologising for what the car looks like, or standard of finish etc. It's great, you've already made massive improvements. Cheers.
What's holding you back from going to the MOT place and having the car checked at this point? It feels like all the cosmetics could be done after the thing is mechanically sound and driving.
I agree, concentrate on functionality first and foremost: engine, brakes, transmission, suspension, and lighting. Do the cosmetic stuff last. Frankly, making it a "derelict" seems the better way to go - have it running and working right trumps appearance all day long. No worries about a door ding from a shopping cart (trolley as they say in UK)! It frees your mind of the worry about nonsense.
My thoughts exactly otherwise you could end up with a not bad looking 2 ton's of scrap metal
Definitely something soporific about soothing music and frenetic time-lapse cinematography!!
The pointer on the shifter is a light pipe, there is a light globe behind it “ what you thought was a spring” is a light globe side ways.
Get the decal imho. You wouldn't forgive yourself if you bugger it up after all the hard work. Great vid as always.
Mistmerizing paintjob. Well Done!
I think it came out really well!
Thanks Longplay
Well done mate! Paintwork is always a daunting job, but nothing gets done if you don't go for it! It's nice to see this coming along 😊
These colour lights are usually not easy to get, however in a good automotive shop, they have a form of lacker (like transparent nail polish) you can use to colour your bulbs! That stuff is really good! I used it with the restoration of my Cornisch Convertible! By the way, a small tip; if you want to use a paint brush, you thin the paint until it has the appearance of milk! You get that by thin it up to one-to-one! Then you don't have to worry about about brush strokes. This method is only for paint without metallic! I would never recommend it with metallic colours! I really like your channel and hope you do more like these automotive features. For the pin-striping there is special paint for sale! ❤
The problem is the rattle cans will never cure properly.. so when you get it professionally done it’ll be much more time consuming for them.. I admire the do it attitude though 😊
Great job. You can put the bulbs glass side into a piece of tubing or a straw and it will hold it so you can turn the tube to tighten or remove. Works with screws and bolts that are hard to get.
Get a decal for pin striping. You don’t have the skill or equipment to do it by hand. That is not anything against you at all! It’s just the nature of the beast as it were. Trying to pin stripe for the first time is a recipe for disaster. That’s all. Love you mate.
Glad to see that you're working on the Rolls-Royce again good video
I've missed these so much over the winter so I'm really glad to see them back. It continues to be my favourite series on RUclips, so I'm still torn between wanting to see the car finished and for it to actually keep giving you problems so that the series never ends 😆😛 Well done on the respray, and well done on the decision, which I think is more important - when you're not seeing progress it gets you down, so if the car at least looks better it's going to improve your mood and optimism, which will have a knock-on effect on everything in your life. Good luck, Vince.
I hope this series is never ending cos I’ve loved every episode. Vince would you like a replica tax disc for your Rolls Royce. I can do a reproduction of the first disc your car would have had when it was new, including post office stamp details. If you do, I’ll send one to your PO Box. I understand if you want to keep the windscreen disc free though.
The secret is out... Vince IS Banksy! 😂
Great job vince she’s looking good go with the decal
Great video Vince! It really is coming along and I definitely appreciate the journey.
Go with the decal Vince, PRNDIL lamp flickering is most probably a bad connection either on the feed or ground. Without looking at a wiring diagram hard to know if the LED is effecting it.
it may be a photoelectric sensor, dimming for night, and brighter in day, and you are blocking light to it when moving
Good to see the continuous Rolls Royce vlogs and nice job with the spraying Vince 👍
I LOVE THESE VINCE KEEP EM COMING!!
Thank you
That rattle can spray job came out real nice. I agree that with all the blotches and the duck gone it's a completely different car to the eye. Lovely as the accidental duck was. It will be back. Somehow. :D
In sticker form hopefully 🦆 In part 54 I properly flat back the paint and the finish is now much shinier 👌
Keep the car body classy and get a duck keyring Vince @@Mymatevince 👍
SPOILERS!!!!! 🤣🤣@@Mymatevince
My favourite Vince videos. Loved this.
I think the paint looks great! Obviously I haven't seen it in person but it looks good to me, and certainly leaps and bounds above what it was before
Given that the whole car has been about 'giving it a go' rather than looking for perfection, I would love to see you try and paint on the stripe. It's a Rolls Royce - it deserves the effort. If it goes slightly awry, I think it adds to the character. Plus it could be a great talking-point. You could practice a few times on something other than the Rolls, e.g. a biscuit container, to get the hang of it, and also make sure the tape is suitable for fresh paint so that it can be removed easily.
Great work Vince!
We are so back! Love waking up in the middle of the night to these uploads. I suggest the decal btw.
I highly doubt the LED is causing your issue. If that were the case, it would be consistently dim. You probably have a grounding issue or a loose/corroded wire somewhere in the circuit.
it may be a photoelectric sensor, dimming for night, and brighter in day, and you are blocking light to it when moving
Great job Vince.👌👌
Take it from the son of an auto body repairman, go with decals. No tape is good enough to stop bleed in the hands of an amateur. The uniformity of a decal is your best bet unless you go to a professional freehand pinstriper. Amazing they are.
great stuff vince , really enjoy watching these video's , your a clever man
Vince, if you're getting it professionally sprayed, save spending time on this.
Believe me, the MOT centre will care a lot less about the paint finish than you.
Duplication of effort is unnecessary
@@JohnnyG101 That supports my point.
Don't add rattle can spray that may or may not have to be removed when it goes for a professional job.
Get the (great) series done & show the finished car.
But it’s the enjoyment of the activity that matters. That’s the point.
Secondly, it may be some months or longer before the car is repainted professionally and this work amounts to an effective interim measure, meaning the car can be enjoyed.
I've been trying to spray paint a large object with a rattle can, but never gotten good results (tiger stripes everywhere) but after watching your way of spray painting I'd give it a try, and it turned out great! thank you so much.
Brave venture especially without a garage or any form of cover. Some years ago I brush painted an old Moggie 1000 using Parsons Re-Paint but had the luxury of a garage. I was very impressed by the high gloss finish and lost count of the number of people who asked me where I had it resprayed!
Just my two cents, but go with the decale for your pinstripe. Far too risky to mess with paint after all the work you've done on the grey. Decals can be taken back off if it all goes south, bleeding paint or paint drops won't be so simple. (just my personal take if it where my decision). Nice work as always. Hopefully the paint work gives you inspiration and reward.
Drop the pinstripes and remove the white walls - will look much "cleaner".
4:15 THE DUCK MUST STAY!!!
If you want to roll around in a rattle Canned roller then you can Vince it’s your car and you can do that if you want too because it’s yours. Who cares if it isn’t the way to do it it’s made you happier.
really enjoyed this Vince 👍
We love your unique videos and keep doing what your doing bro ❤💙❤💙❤
My kind of bodywork. You did really well. No tiger stripes (unlike my work😂)
Rattle cans in cold weather. What could possibly go wrong
=D Coming along nicely! That seat hole really has padded out nicely!
Thanks Chris, I'll release part 54 on Patreon later and then you can see the finished seat, the dilemma I had on the seat and also how shiny I ended up getting the paint! 👍
For some reason I kept being reminded of Hyacinth Bucket's brother in law Onslow from Keeping Up Appearances while you were spraying the car.
I think I would use a decal, they can look very good and are quick to use.
Reminds me of the 1990's when I brush painted my Ford Capri with Dulux black vinyl silk emulsion, it had a semi matt finish which seems to be a thing these days 😂very hard wearing too.
And just like that ..... BANG the duck is gone, farewell duck you will be missed.
Great job Vince it's looking good.
👍👍👍👍👍
I think it is incredible that you manage to do such a great work on this car not even being a pro at car repair Vince! The pain job isnt even finished yet but the car is already looking much better! Well done :D.
Go for the decal. Painted pinstripe is not for the weekend warriors.
Vrlo dobro ! Well done !
Love the progress so far 😃 keep it up vince 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
It looks better without the pinstripe
Good effort
Remember, properly painted pinstripes alone bring you additional 10mph
I’m thinking the weather and temperature you painted it in will have had some affect on the finished results…BUT, it looks so much better than it did!!! Great work sir❤
Wow Vince that looks very good for spraying in march you are very lucky it didn’t orange peel well done 😊
Ladies and gentlemen and now going for a duck, going, going, gone. Absolutely quackers. Stick with the decals. Much easier and quicker. It will retain the original character of the car without undue stress and frustration.
With the Gear Selector Light, I have encountered similar problems. I would take a length of wire, and place one end onto a (good) known Earth Point. When your bulb is glowing dimly, place the other end of the wire onto the bulb housing. Obviously, if it reaches full brightness when doing this, you have an earthing fault. I have also replaced the incandescent with LEDs in an Instrument Panel, with no ill-effects at all. You can match that bulb with a suitable LED version, and possibly even buy a green LED. LEDs consume much less current, so the LED version may be the solution to your low brightness level, if you have 12V available at the suspect bulb base. I'm sure that you know all of this already, but this may help others.
Whats with over spraying onto the adjoining panels? Should be masked off unless you do full length spray runs.
As a painter this hurts my soul lol
I’d definitely go with a decal .. maybe you can get a My Mate Vince channel specific one made?
Keep up the great work... really looking forward to the trip to the MoT station 🤞😁
Fitting the decal would be easier but masking and painting might make a more interesting video
There must be a poor contact somewhere causing that light to go on and off, possibly a corroded fuse holder.
it may be a photoelectric sensor, dimming for night, and brighter in day, and you are blocking light to it when moving
Look on the bright side: you could be trying to paint the car in a blizzard!
The problem with LEDs, is they are notoriously hard to dim, without complex circuitry. All those panel lamps will be in parallel and dimmed by a rheostat. The originals should all work, but any LEDs in the circuit, will have problems. Either not dimming at all or suddenly going off, when the voltage gets too low. The random dimming of that PRNDIL incandescent bulb, is a mystery. Not likely to be caused by LEDs paralleled in the circuit, but something else.
Do Pinstripe decals - masking of pinstripes will lead to heartache
"No... don't leave me alone, Ducky Poos!"
Nanny.
28:37 well done ✅
Don't be embarrassed about any of your work Vince, you've done very well 👏🏾
That ship has sailed youve already embarrassed yourself in 53 videos .........Just kidding Vince
RIP Elsbury Duck!!
The PRNDL light is acting like the dashboard lights in many, many W123 Mercedes, it’s likely the windings in the light switch rheostat.
Thanks for the info 👌
That phone alert at 20:24 almost 99% your dad texting you after honking the horn 😂
hi i think you should just use a decal cos if your getting iy sprayed properly they can do your lines for you hence decal will save time and money
I do enjoy the series. Sad to hear you´re in a enjoyment-down with the car. Guess that´s quiet normal for such a long term project. Hang in there.
I do think the paint looks really good for a spay can job, that was done out in a garden!
You needed to cut the clear back more, you could see the milkyness was not consistent.
Can we have an update on finances soon? The last one was very informative.
Chance of rain 100%. We have the same accurate forecasts here in Michigan.
Duck? What have I missed? Jeez I’m getting old, the Duck comment made me think I’m losing the plot!
"The cars a complete mess" LOL u wanna see my mrs car then 😝
Kept putting off watching RIP the duck , some sticker merch coming soon lol . Years ago worked in paint shop and repainted a brown roller front wing and door , it needed a gold pinstripe so a local sign writer cam in and hand painted it wasnt perfect slight variation in thickness but followed body line perfect . Owner was over the moon as it matched rest of car as he said you could see it was done by hand and not just a vinyl stick on . Loved and also hated lol the video but can see why you did it .
At least your having a go Vince doesn't matter what other people think along as it looks ok to you .I've seen people use a paint brush they didn't care 😃👍
How about a Rat Rod Roller! Or one of those cartoon graphics job. Amazing effects with sharpies and pinstriping! As an ex mechanic I've slogged away on cars and know its soul destroying seeing little or no progress. This changes the first day you take it out for a blast. Stay safe with the fumes 😃😃😎😎
Check the grounding for the lights.
Could the PRNDIL light be on a timer, so the light isn't constantly on when you're driving? I'd time how long it takes to go off, and if it's a consistent number of seconds, I bet it's by design.
Only thing I would have recommended is given it all a tack and panel wipe in between coats, really makes a difference to the base and clear coats. Panel wipe is awesome, its strong naptha and useful for soaking dirty metal parts, cleaning watch parts, degreasing paintable surfaces and can even fill your lighter, fast panel wipe is the best being the strongest naptha burns through finger grease and oils quite quickly hence the name, slow panel wipe is more for those with a ventilated spray booth where speed isn't key.
Another great vid Vince 👍 I think I'd like to see you hand paint it, it would make a great video - although a decal would be easier and still look really good.
If youve got an led in the circuit they have their own little circuit inside and could be affecting everything else. Also look for bad grounds in the panel harness, bad or insufficient grounds and
give all kinds of problems.
Looking now at you amazing spray and pray. Do you have a party tent were you can put the car under when it rains? Saves you a lot time while waiting when it's getting dry. Great job with the spraying 👍
PLEASE watch some painting videos before you paint anymore, I was cringing as I was watching. You can get a great finish with rattle cans but you cant just hold down the nozzle and shake the can and spray. You follow the same discipline when using rattle cans as you would do with a spray gun. Since you are blending, start spraying facing about 45 degrees and turn to the panel as you start a pass, then finish spraying past the end before you let off. Holding it down like that causes mottling and runs and sags and runs. You can get it prety good though without a booth. Just watch some vids on spraying. You can learn a lot. The paint from a rattle can is not as durable as paint that has a hardener in it. It is easy to burn through with a buffer.
Cringing....really lol, Jesus
looks good
a bad switch might be the problem with the lights. could also be a bad connection somewhere.
