  • An undercover investigator for animal rights groups has spent the last 25 years covertly filming at factory farms across the UK and Europe. They are nothing like what they show in advertisements: He sees animals beaten for not doing what the workers want, living half-dead in their own excrement.
This is the state of farms everywhere, even places making products labelled “local”, “organic” or "free range". He shares the worst things he’s seen, the effect it has on the workers and on the investigators themselves.

I think the face and voice mask are more like a thematic metaphor. If you look at the other episodes in this series, all the Informants wear a face mask and have an altered voice.
I think it's not so much about hiding their identity for security/privacy reasons as much as it is about the idea that all these people are "nobodies", without an identity or humanity in the eyes of the larger society. It's a really cool opportunity to look into their invisible experiences

Except for some rural parts of Canada and maybe a few piddly little organic farms in the States, North America mostly uses factory farming for meat production. I think it's also worth mentioning that "open fields" in the industry can be a term used to refer to those outdoor pens in Texas, which can cram thousands upon thousands of cattle together in their own feces until their feet begin to rot. Being outdoors, they face harsh sun exposure and harassment from insects and flies. Unless it's in a fresh green grassy space with lots of room to roam, an outdoor pen overpopulated to the gills is still a factory farm.

vegans are different. The only diet where they morally make judgments on you for eating meat. Also, I think the vast majority of people are aware of terrible farm conditions, its well documented. Peopel dont mock vegans because of their sympathy for animals, they mock them because vegans will try to morally guilt people for not being like them. But sure, some people are ignorant and think farms are all humane. Vegans irk people a lot more than people who diet for health reasons as opposed to dieting for moral reasons, because they use their lifestyle as a way to make moral judgements. Not all vegans of course, and some vegans do it for health reasons... but vegans are disproportionately self righteous. Out of sight out of mind is a normal human quality. There isn't enough time or resources to address every cause the typical person cares for. Especially not one that gives you meat to eat in return, as humans are omnivourous. Its natural to eat meat, and not feel guilty. But I see your point, it applies to some vegans, and applies to some ignorant people. But vegans get a bad rap for the same reasons a group like PETA does.

    • @JunkBondTrader

@@owqays2742 forget intestines or teeth. The fact we eat meat is the qualifier for being meat eaters. evolution doesn't plan in advance, we are the result of every choice we make. But I agree with what you are saying, and am not debating your point. I just find it funny how we need to convince some people that humans are meat eaters, when it's as obvious as the sky being blue. People ignore blatant facts to push their moral agendas. Simply eating meat is the only criteria to be meat eaters, and we love meat haha. If a herbavour animal started eating meat one day, we wouldnt say they aren't meant to eat it. If they choose to eat it, they are meat eaters now. Them thinking our body design determines our fate is silly, and ultimately implies that we are controlled by evolution and lack free will - rather than our free will controls how we evolve. Of course I cant claim to know how this universe works, but a deterministic universe seems much less likely, and has no proof. We're meat eaters because we eat meat, and our bodies constantly adapt to suit our behaviour, rather than we eat meat because evolution decided to give us sharp teeth. I've seen the hens in that huge yard only once. So that fence makes it possible to sell their eggs for double the price because they can make a claim about free range, but there are apparently no laws that require the chickens to be able to access that outside yard for even a minimum of hours. Yes, and the chickens are TERRIFIED of going outside so they won’t. They can be swooped up by birds of prey because they have no shelter, so it’s a smart instinct. When people rescue factory farmed chickens in groups, they have to stay up all night and day with them because they will pile on eachother out of fear because they’ve never had that much space to move around in their entire lives. When they do this they end up suffocating eachother. It’s so sad.

@@owenicewater9704 You are talking about a different point. I didn't say "vegans shouldn't convince nonvegans to go vegan in any circumstance" - I replied to the original comment saying "if people saw slaughterhouses they'd all be vegan". I negated this because there are people who DO live near slaughterhouses or watch the animals being slaughtered and still purchase meat because it's a cheap and wholesome meal option. That's why even upon seeing slaughterhouses, many will remain nonvegan. ALSO veganism is NO animal products as you know, but people may still consume dairy and eggs even after seeing slaughterhouses.
Then, I negated the comment saying "it's just rice, pasta, beans, veggies" because in many countries you can't actually practice VEGANISM given most cheap and easy meal options are nonvegan EVEN if they aren't outright meat options. Take my country for example. People live in poverty, in subdivided flats. Kitchens have to be shared and rotated. People are forced to get cheap takeout. Without access to kitchens, a fully cooked meal is often needed. Cheap fast food restaurants offer meat and rice with some veggies for USD 4. If you were to try to find 'vegan' options here that were also wholesome, containing protein and being as filling as meat, it would be far more expensive as meat is ingrained in the culture (veganism needs to be more systemic in countries which aren't as multi-cuisine as the US/UK).
I by no means am saying that no one should be convinced to go vegan. I am simply saying convincing everyone is unrealistic, and that it's an oversimplification to say veganism is just "rice pasta beans and veggies" for some people.

I've worked on a pig farm before. My family owns it so I was sort of thrust into this environment at a young age. Though it has left me with some mental scars, I know some of the workers have been there for over a decade. The way they live compared to my family is deplorable. These workers destroy their bodies and minds with this type of work and are barely compensated in my opinion. They aren't properly taught. I had to go through a class to become "certified" to work with these animals even though I was already working with them and so were many others. The class is conducted by the company that contracts my family and included workers from other pig farms as well. It was an utter joke. Most of the workers there primarily spoke Spanish. The class/power point presentation was given to us by an English speaker with no translators present. When the "quiz" was given out they openly let everyone cheat, which I can't blame the workers for participating in because they could not understand the f*cking presentation. It feels like this whole business, like so many, is rooted in this false humanity and unregulated monstrosities.
The stench he mentioned. It really does permeate every bit of you. Everything is in a constant state of disrepair. Everything that enters is consumed by filth. Seeing a mother pig brutalize her babies because of stress. Seeing a mother pig sit on her babies because there's no room for her to move at all. Seeing pigs getting openly beat with thick iron rods. Seeing a baby pig get their heads smashed into the concrete because they're deformed and won't make it anyways (a technique taught in the presentation btw). I could go on and on, but it's hard to digest this stuff as well as speak about it. It's all passed off as necessary and I don't believe that for a second. This industry is traumatizing. I didn't realize how hard it would be just to type all this out while still trying to seem composed.

A lot of the Spanish-speaking workers in southern US factory farms are illegal migrant workers who, if injured/killed on the job, have no legal recourse, really. Their family may not even be notified for months if a tragedy occurs. Some of them fail to seek healthcare after a workplace injury because they fear being deported or they're sending all their earnings down to their families. They often face racism in the workplace or their situation as an illegal is used to threaten and blackmail them into performing dangerous work that no human being should be doing, leading to injuries and deaths caused by heavy machinery, animal attacks, diseases, sharp objects and worse. Not saying your family's farm engages in hiring illegal migrants or abusing Mexican workers, but it does happen quite a lot, unfortunately.

I did animal rights activism for quite a while and I've been very aware of this. I've seen movies and documentaries about this. I went vegan nearly 6 years ago. It still goes on today, and people see activists as extreme and harsh. It's the truth. The sad truth. Animals feel the same way we do. They fall in love the way we do. They have children the way we do.

I don't believe there's anything wrong with being vegan but I do believe that the all-or-nothing approach has alienated people from veganism since some vegans can come across as zealots. Groups like PETA have gone overboard and left vegans with a bad reputation for being intolerant and obsessive. I think even people who love eating meat could find a common ground with vegans on the general agreement that factory farming is a filthy, dirty, abusive and cruel practice that needs to be phased out. This is something that, if vegans and meat-eating people could all come together on, would make an enormous difference for animals if they all teamed up to establish legislation phasing out the practice of factory farming. The only people who I imagine would actually want to fight this would be lobbyists for large agricultural companies, or sadists who get off on the idea of animals suffering (hopefully there are very few people from the latter category, but I've seen some very twisted people out there who are totally fine with factory farming and who see it as funny or meaningless if the animals are tortured).

So I grew up being used to slaughtering animals to eat. However, my father always told me to make sure that the animal has lived a good life and to not let it suffer anymore than it has to when it is time for their death. To completely respect what the animal has given me, I must not waste anything. One day I want to be self-reliant and only rely on the animals I raise or hunt. Many small farmers and hunters do love animals, it may be hard to understand for many. This is something I've come to realize killing a fish in front of my husband who is not used to that situation. He screamed, felt guilt, and showed so much fear for the fish, and while I understood the fish was scared, I didn't want it to have a painful death. Not everyone has killed an animal, and I wouldn't force my husband to do it because he would not know how, and the animal would have a painful death because of it. Being raised like this makes me feel a huge sense of anger about meat that is wasted or animals raised poorly. It almost shows a sense of ignorance of the sacrifice an animal made to feed you, only to be disrespected.

These diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, adolescence, older adulthood, and for athletes. Plant-based diets are more environmentally sustainable than diets rich in animal products because they use fewer natural resources and are associated with much less environmental damage. Vegetarians and vegans are at reduced risk of certain health conditions, including ischemic heart disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, certain types of cancer, and obesity. Low intake of saturated fat and high intakes of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, soy products, nuts, and seeds (all rich in fiber and phytochemicals) are characteristics of vegetarian and vegan diets that produce lower total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and better serum glucose control. These factors contribute to reduction of chronic disease. Vegans need reliable sources of vitamin B-12, such as fortified foods or supplements."

I don't think anyone that follows an healty diet eats a sausage roll or any type of meat every day. I am against slaughterhouses , but animal proteins are irreplaceable: we don't have to eat meat everyday, but the nutrients we get from it are indispensable for our well being, so cutting it out of our diets without supplements can be very dangerous, especially if you are not followed by any specialist. Sadly without the death of an animal we can't recieve nourishment, but that's just the cicle of nature: it is up to us to honor the animal, taking everything that is edible and useful , i.e. organs, like the liver or parts of the stomach, which are sadly trown away most of the time because people want the "perfect slice" or anithing that isn't considered gross. I come from a country which treats every ingredient with care and respect, and we try to waste the smallest amount of food we can, because ,for me, the least we can do to repay a creature of its nourishment is to value every thing we can, so that its slaughter wasn't invain.

As someone who's lived on a cruelty-free farm for most of their lives, I'm going to fill in some more blanks here.
One of the most common ways for a factory farm to get their meat is to contract farmers give up their meat. What do I mean by this?
So, a factory farm approaches a farm with a contract. If the farmer raises animals, buys animal food from the factory, and does everything the factory tells them to do, the factory will take the farmer's meat and sell it for them. In return, the farmer will get more money than they normally would.
This means that any farmer under contract must follow the factory's rules EXACTLY. Spraying their land, using the correct brand of food, getting medications every year. And the farmer needs to pay for it.
You may ask "Well, why don't the farmers sell their meat themselves instead?". Because it won't sell. 9 times out of 10, a person will choose a grocery store over local produce. Farmers can easily go bankrupt VERY quickly, so the factory prays off the farmer's desperation and need for funding.
The way that the factory avoids all blame is to put in the contract that ANY AND ALL problems with the meat are placed on the farmer that raised it. Boycotting the factory only boycotts the farmers, and drives the farmers out of business. Legally, you can't place the blame on the factory for the quality of the meat no matter what part the factory played.
Even worse, the law develops specifically so that farmers need to be SOMEWHAT dependent on the things the government supplies. A while back, the FDA released some new rules that made it difficult for farmers to get their animals butchered and readied for sale by the FDA. In retaliation, farmers started going to local butchers instead. Soon after, "coincidentally", butcher shops started needing to be closed down for "not following the law" due to sudden new rules the FDA put out. This forced farmers to go back to the FDA.
Essentially, the way the law has been built prevents anyone from actually changing these issues. You can't stop the factories because that only stops the real farmers. And if the interest in vegan products keeps climbing, the government will want to be finger-deep in that movement as well (if they haven't already).

They are the exact same activities and animal killing that happened on all our grand and great grandparents farms just on a larger industrial scale. More people equals more food. Killing and butchering animals is never pretty. It’s just something that is done. Everyone has seen the videos. It’s just a reality that most aren’t aware of. Now the punching of calves and stupid behavior like that can be found in any business that involves people. Some people are just assholes.
