Paul Kelly is Australia’s poet laureate. Gravy Day is incredibly emotional for all Aussies. We remember our loved ones who aren’t with us.

Paul Kelly has an knack of taking other people's circumstances and placing himself right in there. But he does it with sympathy and respect. 😊❤ Love this man like a brother. 😊

How to Make Gravy is a unique Australian song always played on December 21st on all the radio stations. It is unique in thet it doesn't have a chorus.
December 21st is called "Gravy Day". It recognizes loved ones no matter where they are at Christmastime. It tells the story of a newly imprisoned man writing a letter to his brother, in which the prisoner laments that he will be missing the family's Christmas celebrations. The same character appears in two of Kelly's earlier songs, "To Her Door" (1987) and "Love Never Runs on Time" (1994). The gravy recipe is genuine - Kelly learnt it from his first father-in-law.

I'm Aussie and this video made me subscribe! Paul Kelly was one of my dad's favourite Aussie artists when I was growing up and we used to play this all the time around Christmas time.
I'd also recommend “From St. Kilda To King's Cross”, “From Little Things Big Things Grow” and “To Her Door”. They're all legendary Paul Kelly songs!!

7:26 You hit the nail on the head. He “really screwed up this time”, we don’t know what he did or why, but he owns that it was his fault. I’ve always figured it couldn’t be too violent or severe as this is his first Christmas inside and he should be out by July.
It’s a letter to his brother.

    @tosgem 3 месяца назад +4

Hey mate, nice job. Thanks for fussing a bit over us Aussies with a few song reactions, but I also hope your channel expands and you get some bigger demographics 😅
This is a special song to me, we play it at Christmas and think about people who can't be with us. And like you said I know plenty of people deserve to be in prison but there's a time and a place for everything and Christmas is a good time to think about another angle - redemption and forgiveness, the human side. We are all sinners, and Christmas is the birthday of our saviour and the one who pays for our sins and gives us a clean slate. When you listen to this song you can't help but hope this guy gets out in July and starts a new, happy life on the straight and narrow.
I like that this song is a more honest and raw Christmas song than some of the other, merrier ones. It's not pretending we're all perfect or that Christmas is the time to project some fake image. Lots of movies, songs, books etc touch on the subject of "the real" meaning of Christmas, the spirit of Christmas, and this song gets me thinking about that.

Deep Cuts Reactions also reacted to this Paul Kelly song but it was a better (inside) version. Aussies love this song and play it around Christmas and especially on the 21st of December which is 'Making Gravy Day.' Paul Kelly has had a number of groups over the years and did some great work Vika and Linda Bull who are fabulous singers. All are in my home city of Melbourne where JOHN FARNHAM also comes from. Good call on the meaning of the song, you pretty much nailed it. Paul Kelly is Australia's storyteller, almost all of his songs have a deep story behind the lyrics and require a few listens to get the point. One that isn't so deep, but is one of my faves is "Dumb Things", it's a bit more upbeat and was used on the soundtrack of Young Einstein, a quirky Aussie comedy flick....

Australians in the past used to have a problem with Alcohol and Violence. Especially the poor side of town.
Many incarcerated for fights, domestic fights and disruptive behaviour while under the influence of alcohol.
I have far too many stories that go down that path since i grew up in the darker side of town.
We didn't have to worry about gangs and all that crap. They didn't really exist.
It was more having to watch ones mouth around everyone, because if you mouthed off to Mr. and Mrs. Quarry on the other side of town, you knew she would be phoning your parents to complain and your father would be waiting for you to get in the door before he really does beat you to an inch of your life. That gave way to drinking issues and more violence.
    Everyone knew everyone.
I grew up going to school and several kids had black eyes, split lips and were covered head to toe in black green bruises.
    Thankfully that doesnt happen anymore.

Australians love the underdog, the battler, the little guy. And a lot of our popular music reflects that. Even Waltzing Matilda our unofficial national anthem is about a seasonal worker, a transient down on his luck who steals some jumbucks. Because we are all capable of messing up and going off the rails and we all hope to be giving the chance at redemption. I recommend The Models-The Easybeats- The Go betweens- Crowded house- The Angels- Custard as good down under bands to listen to. Love the channel!

Hey, enjoying the channel. I've also just subscribed. You have a lot of Aussies and Kiwi's tuning in for a number of reasons. Essentially we love sharing the unbelievable musical talent we have with the world. Many artists are world class but for whatever reason haven't made it big elsewhere. Some weren't prepared to move somewhere like the States and start all over again, others were screwed by American record companies like Cold Chisel (when the A & R guy at the U.S label can't come to your L.A showcase because he's holding a birthday party for his dog, you know they aren't going to help you break in to the market). We love seeing reactions to our wonderful artists. I'm delighted you are exploring Paul Kelly. Yes he's a story teller. Can I please suggest you react to his song "Everything's Turning to White". Be prepared for a very confronting story and amazing lyrics written from a female's perspective. A sombre tale, but brilliantly told.

Christmas in Australia no longer has a religious dimension. In fact Church attendance is about 1%. Never the less the day lives on as the most important holiday in the calendar. It has become about family. Joining together with those who you feel a bond with even if you have not seen them for years.
This song is about one of those who is not having a Christmas. Every year there are people in this situation. The elderly the lonely and those in jail. It is a time of incredible sadness for such people.
This song is a meditation on how much this guys role in helping with the family meal is important to him and how much missing it is devastating to him. It is not a call for prison reform.
The song was never a hit it was just an add on to an album. Yet it has become much beloved of Australians. December the 21st is known as Gravy Day.
As a small aside our most important traditional song "Waltzing Matilda" is about a sheep thief
