  • Chair of the John Lewis Partnership, Dame Sharon White, joins us to discuss running a British institution in a cost-of-living crisis. John Lewis Partnership announced £234 million in losses this year.
    John Lewis boss Dame Sharon White says 'legislation could do more' to protect businesses from theft. This comes as Suella Braverman has said it is 'unacceptable' that crimes like shoplifting have been treated as 'less important' and the British Retail Consortium reports retail thefts are up by 26% in 2022.

    • @grenvallion
      @grenvallion 9 месяцев назад +3

      @galegrazutis964 it depends who you are tbh. When you look at the numbers for benefits. Family's with lots of kids get loafs but theres also family's who barely get anything. Looking at the single person rate. They get £1200 per month which isn't a lot. Once they use this to pay everything needed, they still have nothing. The average working person has £200 per month in excess income after everything is paid. Which is also nothing.

    • @tea.topzone
      @tea.topzone 9 месяцев назад

      @grenvallion You say the single person rate is £1200 in benefits. Seem like too much to be giving out freely! University masters degree graduates earn £1500 and don't go around stealing. How is £1200 single person rate of benefits not enough money?? The benefits system in this country is very generous.

    • @grenvallion
      @grenvallion 9 месяцев назад

      @tea.topzone I didn't say it wasn't enough. I'm sure you could survive on 1200 a month. You'd still have to pay rent, etc, out of it, though plus food, utilities, and whatever else you require. Enough to live on? Most likely. There is nothing left to do anything else, though. Even if they needed interview clothes, I'm sure they can get extra help in the form of gift cards, etc. There's going to be limits to it, though, and even cheap clothes are pretty expensive for someone who has very little.

    She's right about scotland, police actively patrol streets, and arrest shoplifters, along with people who abuse retail workers.
    Now here in England different story, I haven't seen a patrolling officer since 2019 in my local high street. I work in retail and when I contact the police about shoplifters, my local police have said they won't attend unless the value of the theft is over £1000. They also will not respond to customers abusing, threatening or attack staff. Example the McDonald's down from the shop I was working at was attacked by a gang of teens, who smashed the Windows and jumped the counter to attack staff. You could hear them over the security radios begging for police aid. They refused, said it was to dangerous! It's bloody ridiculous, they are meant to protect us and catch crims! There was a petition for the same laws in Scotland to be brought to england for retail. The government rejected it, saying it wasn't needed!! Look at it now, high street crime is through the door and nothing being done.

    Seems a pity but JL hasn’t understood why generations of customers kept purchasing.
    As for giving police free coffee seems a bit of a publicity stunt given fact many waitrose stores have security. Which for majority of customers must be off putting. I work next door to a waitrose store and frequently go in after work but have noticed security looking at me when in past I have never had this overt scrutiny while shopping. I even wondered if I was wearing something that made me look like a criminal but as I work in public library I suspect it’s just poorly trained security which leaves me feeling disinclined to keep shopping at waitrose a store in which I have spent many thousands over decades since my son was a baby. Dame Sharon White was not the right fit for John Lewis. A career Civil Servant, she did not have the relevant industry experience in a cut throat market. In this interview, she’s talking about thefts in her stores. It’s her job to deal with it - quietly & unobtrusively. It’s bad publicity as it doesn’t entice customers to pay a visit to the stores. Customers don’t need to know about this anyway. By the way, I told John Lewis Oxford Circus about this problem 5 years ago. They did absolutely nothing. Her job was to perform surgery on underperforming stores, slash rents, look at their product/price offering & how it compares with others and fix the problems and talk up the brand. Instead, she put her head in the sand hoping things would go away. She’s leaving it to Jason Tarry of Tesco to clean up her and her predecessors’ mess. Good luck with that mate.

    " Very interesting " says the presenters.....as if they never heard before
    That, tougher sentences and police arresting more shop lifting assailants and taking all crime seriously makes a difference 😂
    It's as if the presenter are 10 years old

    This horror of a ceo ruined john Lewis, she was a token placement to please the wokery, she destroyed the loyal customer base, I was a long time customer, had my credit limit slashed and I haven't purchased another thing from john Lewis. Good riddance to this exemplary macdonalds candidate.

    I do most of my shopping online, who wants to go to a shopping mall full of drug dealers and crack-heads waiting to rob you?, High business rates and high business rents in the name of greed push people to shop online. Thank you, do not get ripped off by greedy shop owners, shop online it's way safer. ...
