- Chair of the John Lewis Partnership, Dame Sharon White, joins us to discuss running a British institution in a cost-of-living crisis. John Lewis Partnership announced £234 million in losses this year.
John Lewis boss Dame Sharon White says 'legislation could do more' to protect businesses from theft. This comes as Suella Braverman has said it is 'unacceptable' that crimes like shoplifting have been treated as 'less important' and the British Retail Consortium reports retail thefts are up by 26% in 2022.

Shoplifting is increasing because UK society is breaking down in general. Its just one symptom of many currently..
I work at waitrose and they have a policy to not prosecute any shoplifter and they hire one security guard who stands no way near the door while texting all shift
Well truth be told not many scumbags come to Waitrose
Just like my local tesco got rid of all the security guards who worked in the security room so they could save money.
Then wonder why items keep walking out the door.
Sounds like the one in my Waitrose .
Hilarious Richard covering this when he hit the headlines shoplifting in the 90’s 😅
😂 thanks for reminding of this, if my memory serves me right it was a bottle of wine.
@@kevinetheridge7201 it was more than a bottle more like a trolley full of it lol 😂
He "forgot" to pay for that wine..
It was in a waitrose.....this is just hilariously hypocritical
Yep 😂
"Every crime matters" apart from when MPS break law during lockdown
Very interesting video. Im a security guard in a retail store and cant wait to leave it. Been doing it for 6 months and i can blame the police for these repeat offenders. They come and steal at will.
I’m curious, as a security guard, what can you actually do when dealing with thieves or abusive customers? I see them around but do wonder what rights do they have or regulations they have to follow.
Brave job to have well done, i couldn't do it, im a wuss
Many are not allowed to do anything, otherwise they get sacked. It's utter madness
I just tell them that they took it and I tried to take it back. If I see aggression I let them have it.
As a security guard do you watch people who look like Dame Sharon white more than others,.I honestly feel this may be why they miss so much theft
I wonder what Richard Madley thinks about shoplifters?
We know why it’s skyrocketing…
Agreed. Maybe this tv show should address the real issues in U.K. today. Not this tripe
She is definitely not feeling the pinch like the rest of us
whats your point?
Dame Sharon White, what an intelligent, lovely lady. Bring her back!
you are being scarcastic, obvioulsy! she is none of the above not even White.
Totally underwhelming as a (former) CEO of a major retailer.
This is so funny as Richard shoplifted from Waitrose
Shoplifting has been around for years, you will never stop it, no matter how many security guards you have,
A very rich woman talking about why poor people shoplift 😂
Hang on are you saying if your poor you have the green light to steal??!! Britain has an overly generous welfare system, food banks and all sorts of services. There is never an excuse to steal!!!
@galegrazutis964 it depends who you are tbh. When you look at the numbers for benefits. Family's with lots of kids get loafs but theres also family's who barely get anything. Looking at the single person rate. They get £1200 per month which isn't a lot. Once they use this to pay everything needed, they still have nothing. The average working person has £200 per month in excess income after everything is paid. Which is also nothing.
She is talking about crime. About stealing. You can be poor and decent, working hard like millions of people in these country. Most of the people stealing are teenagers with branded clothing and Apple watches.....so please, just look at the facts
@grenvallion You say the single person rate is £1200 in benefits. Seem like too much to be giving out freely! University masters degree graduates earn £1500 and don't go around stealing. How is £1200 single person rate of benefits not enough money?? The benefits system in this country is very generous.
@tea.topzone I didn't say it wasn't enough. I'm sure you could survive on 1200 a month. You'd still have to pay rent, etc, out of it, though plus food, utilities, and whatever else you require. Enough to live on? Most likely. There is nothing left to do anything else, though. Even if they needed interview clothes, I'm sure they can get extra help in the form of gift cards, etc. There's going to be limits to it, though, and even cheap clothes are pretty expensive for someone who has very little.
I used to work at Waitrose and if I am being honest is so untrue I left because I didn’t feel like a partner no progression always short of staff
Also had loads of customers complaining about the prices of the products partners are unhappy
I remember Richard Madley's trolley-dash...
She's right about scotland, police actively patrol streets, and arrest shoplifters, along with people who abuse retail workers.
Now here in England different story, I haven't seen a patrolling officer since 2019 in my local high street. I work in retail and when I contact the police about shoplifters, my local police have said they won't attend unless the value of the theft is over £1000. They also will not respond to customers abusing, threatening or attack staff. Example the McDonald's down from the shop I was working at was attacked by a gang of teens, who smashed the Windows and jumped the counter to attack staff. You could hear them over the security radios begging for police aid. They refused, said it was to dangerous! It's bloody ridiculous, they are meant to protect us and catch crims! There was a petition for the same laws in Scotland to be brought to england for retail. The government rejected it, saying it wasn't needed!! Look at it now, high street crime is through the door and nothing being done.
I'm constantly amazed anyone still wants to go to the high street to shop.
Why? Was an absolute gift to shop and talk to people during lockdown, but if there was no other place to shop other than online, not a world I would want to live in! You can’t beat trying something on, don’t get me wrong, there’s times online is great .
@@Jamofluffy it’s cheaper, easier and far cleaner to shop online. The market will decide and all the indicators are pointing that way. Look at the state of your own local high street.
Whilst it’s an experience to go and see furniture etc in person, the added protection and customer support you get with online purchases makes it far more attractive.
I love shopping and seeing what I want to buy.
Maybe with Amazon. The only good thing about online is it’s cheaper and easier than leaving your house, which aren’t always two good things.
A wonderful advert for John Lewis.
Perhaps next time she could address the topic?
Yup we're all frustrated at waitrose right now! No bonus, no pay rises, no nothing, all under your watch sharon.
I saw people shoplifting on a daily basis on the high street I work on my father lives near a Tescos and a group of kids were shoplifting it's wrong to steal anything
But the cost of living is making families struggle to put food on the table
We do need to keep our high street shops rather then everything online those shops will end up being turned in to houses we will have no shops left
Maybe they need to put the Scottish law into Oxford Street after all the looting of shops there
I worked in retail for 22 years I had to leave and train in another career I just could not deal with it anymore
MY FAMILY IN THE 60S HAD NO MONEY HARDLEY AND WE WERE NOT THIEVING SCUM
It's just as bad here in America. People just walk in empty handed then they. Just walk out with thousands of dollars in two shopping carts.
What's your point. We are NOT interested in whats going on in other countries when THE Story is on LOCAL doings..woukd you simply feck off!! Furthermore clearly its media agenda to swing public perceptions. As this is NOT new but cyclical throughout time, we're not as slow as americans in recognizing media propaganda
Copying America as usual.
Isn't bribing the police a crime
Build more prisons and the courts need to get TOUGH there NO deterrent anymore NOBODY goes to prison the justice system is WEAK
Why is their very little action taken by store security guards who can work undercover to monitor thefts? 🤔 pay security guards more.
Sharon's voice does my head in 😂
Your profits are down because your too expensive.
she is running JLP into the ground. the stores in London and Birmingham are tacky and dingy nowadays and full of overpriced tat clothes that noone buys unless they are wannabe gangsters.
You are correct 💯
Not a licence to shop lift, a necessity, and if I had to, I would.
Nobody has to. That’s the point.
Poor people shoplift because they are purely criminally minded. i saw a guy paying for a round a drinks in my local in Mill Hill Broadway with expensive coffee and steaks he had just nicked from the Tesco Express 60 yards up the road. if poor stole because they were desperate they would be nicking beans, bread, basic cheap stuff not expensive items than can use for their alcohol fund.
@@italianstallion9170 so can you explain why the most commonly shoplifted items are baby formula and baby products? you have one example (which you could have made up) and you think you know people's circumstances. get your head out of your asshole and try having some empathy.
She has now called it quits. Merkel stepped down as Germanys Chancellor as she could no longer cope with the demands of the job, same with Nicole Sturgeon, same with Jacinda Adern, same with Dame Clarissa Dick, same with Liz Truss. And women complain they don’t complain they don’t get the top jobs?! 😂😂😂😂😂
Did they put in self checkouts? They are horrible. We just got them at our gas station. Lots of stealing going on. Just so they can cut our hrs. I was a cashier, smh
Sounds like 1 million thefts
THEY ARE THIEVES NOT SHOPLIFTERS
Profits are down because the competition has overtaken the business, especially with John Lewis.
Let her patronising tone, welcome you into a John Lewis store, before they're quietly closed next month.
Maybe your salary justifies spending £5 on a sandwich.
I thought that was the new meal deal they are doing ie like the other shops that do meal deals which normally comprises more than just a sandwich.
Personal styling experience. Lol
Agreed. They lost my custom when they unceremoniously got rid of their Price Pledge.
All actions have a conciquence if you steal (the correct term for shop lifting) PRISON NO EXCEPTIONS
I stopped shopping with then when they went woke.
I no how to stop this If caught chop one finger of if caught again another finger shoplifting will be a think of the past
Good Morning Britain
Good Bye Sharon.
Waitrose and affordability 😂
I earn £10ph. I can't afford your products.
So do most of the staff for jl and Waitrose 😂😂😂
I've a vet bill, energy bill, food and clothing are not a priority. My meal deal is a peanut butter home made sandwich. My meal deal is Aldi for less than £5. I visited your coffee shop at John Lewis and for 3 coffees and a sandwich it was over £30. 😮
I use to shop regularly with John Lewis for decades usually online but since jl decided to stop its price pledge I have moved many purchases to marks and other online stores. I still shop at waitrose but now purchase some pet food and cat litter items elsewhere.
Seems a pity but JL hasn’t understood why generations of customers kept purchasing.
As for giving police free coffee seems a bit of a publicity stunt given fact many waitrose stores have security. Which for majority of customers must be off putting. I work next door to a waitrose store and frequently go in after work but have noticed security looking at me when in past I have never had this overt scrutiny while shopping. I even wondered if I was wearing something that made me look like a criminal but as I work in public library I suspect it’s just poorly trained security which leaves me feeling disinclined to keep shopping at waitrose a store in which I have spent many thousands over decades since my son was a baby. Now the atmosphere is off putting and not relaxing. I am considering a purchase with some security guard spying on me as if I am doing something wrong
JL is going to go bust. Mark my words
I have every big brand supermarket near my house. Waitrose prices are as close as ever to the other chains, and for the extra quality, much worth the price in the current COL crisis
Are you joking? I balk at Waitrose prices. Even the items that are reduced (yellow stickers) are not a bargain.
@@patpending8134 a lot of items are very competitive. I’d also rather pay £2 for 4 edible and fresh scones from Waitrose than pay £1.75 for 4 dry, tasteless, scones from Aldi/Lidl.
It’s a question of quality-cost comparison.
I have worked all my life and I am only a machine operator not a high wage, but I have never stolen anything. People who steal should go to prison.
Sharon please take this on board, sort out your women’s wear I don’t know anyone who shops there we all shop at next, JL is to old fashioned. Stop your Waitrose home deliveries it is costing to much money just look at the M&S and Aldi Lidl we will still come to the shops.
Sharon White is the most usles chairman I ever saw
A meal deal for a fiver when you can get one for £3.40 in Tesco. Yeah, sounds like a great way to get the average joe through the door.
Why do you blur out what your talking about?
Because it’s only for the live broadcast
If u have kids to feed you will become a "criminal" to do so
if you're able to shoplift then you are able to work. no way would anyone with any moral compass think it is OK to set an example to your kids that stealing is in anyway acceptable
No, you won't steal unless you were already a thief. There are loads of struggling families all over the place who do not steal. If you were working a lot and raising your kids right, you won't have time to steal and would be petrified of getting caught and losing everything.
I work in a store, shoplifting is rife! Probably the increase in drug dealing is driving it, and for me poverty is the reason for drug dealing. We try to stop as many as we can, I would get angry with them but I tell myself the king owns it all in his kingdom, so I don’t work myself up over it anymore.
Looks like the US ...kpix tv san francisco Ktla los angeles ktvi st louis happens every day. Nothing get done
Next story 👎🇬🇧🇺🇲
The fuzz are getting free coffee. What😮! That's not promoting community policing. It's making people feel vulnerable plus you don't want to pay for extra security to protect your store and staff. A colleague should not be stopping shoplifters and risking being stabbed. Pay for more security. Your too cheap and I'm not shopping with you if its unsafe. Look at Leeds atm. Its awful for staff to be put at risk.
this woman is useless don't expect her to do anything about shop theft and protecting staff.
"the cost from theft goes to the customers". Why? why not from your profits? you steal non stop from your customers with your extravagant prices. No pitty for you here.
This is the most horrible place to work in my opinion 😢
Sharon Usless 😡full of sound bites and no idea of running a retail business.she should never been appointed 😡
That mustn`t detract from her failures as the boss. Now in March 2024 it`s another failure of no bonuses for the staff, `again ` While other retailers thrive.
while she will most likely receive a nice payoff on her way out.
The irony, this woman talking about shop lifters - it's her lot that are doing it.
You have not addressed the thefts. You don't want to change your way of doing business. I order off Amazon and I don't buy from John Lewis because its too expensive and rips me off. I'm not being overcharged for clothing or food when I have Aldi.
I like John Lewis. I remember my mother buying a fridge from them years ago and she saw the same fridge at a lower price in a completely different shop a little after she bought it. They gave her the price difference back!
Dame Sharon White was not the right fit for John Lewis. A career Civil Servant, she did not have the relevant industry experience in a cut throat market. In this interview, she’s talking about thefts in her stores. It’s her job to deal with it - quietly & unobtrusively. It’s bad publicity as it doesn’t entice customers to pay a visit to the stores. Customers don’t need to know about this anyway. By the way, I told John Lewis Oxford Circus about this problem 5 years ago. They did absolutely nothing. Her job was to perform surgery on underperforming stores, slash rents, look at their product/price offering & how it compares with others and fix the problems and talk up the brand. Instead, she put her head in the sand hoping things would go away. She’s leaving it to Jason Tarry of Tesco to clean up her and her predecessors’ mess. Good luck with that mate.
" Very interesting " says the presenters.....as if they never heard before
That, tougher sentences and police arresting more shop lifting assailants and taking all crime seriously makes a difference 😂
It's as if the presenter are 10 years old
😂😂😂😂😂
This horror of a ceo ruined john Lewis, she was a token placement to please the wokery, she destroyed the loyal customer base, I was a long time customer, had my credit limit slashed and I haven't purchased another thing from john Lewis. Good riddance to this exemplary macdonalds candidate.
Dame Sharon is a joke should never have been appointed and has helped to hasten JLs demise.
Immigrants
As if British people aren't on benefits? LMAO
Without the immigrants you would have no money on the dole.
Your not loosing anything! Let people steal! Whos is loosing? Comapny yes, but not any particular person
Christ ! Even John Lewis
is not White ( anymore )
What about all these big companys stealing money and making up false warrents on pensions
DOBRO JE IMATI REZERVU IMA JOŠ 2 SINA. 😮
PITAM SE DA LI SE LJUDI SJEĆAJU RIJEČI KRALJA ŠTA JE REKAO VEZANO ZA MEGAN PRINCA KRALJA ČARLSA. SVE JE TO ZABORAVIO NAROD PAMTI.
Dame lol box double ticked.
Hired for her skin colour, shes lost it millions.
most stores could afford to have a in store food bank filled with the reduced food
these stores expect their poor, hard working customers to give to the food banks not the billion pound profit making supermarket.
Shop assistants are so rude and impatient like they are doing you a big favour. ..
An you are a attention seeker
I do most of my shopping online, who wants to go to a shopping mall full of drug dealers and crack-heads waiting to rob you?, High business rates and high business rents in the name of greed push people to shop online. Thank you, do not get ripped off by greedy shop owners, shop online it's way safer. ...
