  • This video shows some of skiving steps we do when making crocodile belts.
It should help for anyone wanting to see how a bell skiver can be used to get that nice profiled look and some of the steps in achieving that. Follow this channel if you want to see more like it.

Hi. So I am new to this tool, the skiving machine. But my main problem is that I do not like the fact that the stone is pulling in the leather with the speed that is used for the bell knife as well. So I would like the bell knife to go fast, but the stone pulling it in to be much less fast. Does the roller foot solve this problem? Or what is the purpose of the roller foot? Because at one point I see that it is pulling in the leather like @2:14 but sometimes it looks like that only the blade is moving the pulling stone is not. Thank you very much, and have a nice day :-) Zsolt

The Fortuna skiver shown in this video has the bell turning always and a clutch that engages the feed when needed. Many Chinese clone machines only have the feed work along with the bell which is not the best action. Many people put in an extra motor to drive the bell separately to overcome these issues. In this video I made on how to sharpen these machines at around 15 minutes in you can see a good example of an improvement done by the local Cowboy distributors in Australia - ruclips.net/video/SjYI5DIzKBs/видео.html
The roller foot reduces the friction of the standard feet and gives a better result in the finished article.

@@wildharry3203 Thank you very much Sir. I am not sure what kind of machine I have. It is probably a very old Hungarian or Russian machine from around the 1950s. Could not find any marks on it, what it would be. But I will ask the guy who repaired mine, and ask if it is possible to get this solution. As I absolutely do not like this setup, and the 2 motor version would be much better. Even disengaging the feed woudl be even a better solution. I would only but a rubber or a smooth surface feeder in, and the to roller foot would be enough to de ot skives I believe, but I am only theorycrafting at this point. Thank you for the detailed answer Sir.

Я поставил на подачу маленький мотор от швейной машинки. Иногда кручу рукой шкив

How would you characterize the positioning of the roller foot in relation to the knife edge. With a regular presser foot there is about 0.5mm between the inside edge of the foot and the knife edge. Do you try to match the slope of the roller foot with the knife bevel? I'll have to experiment.

Different rollers need different gaps from the centre of roller to sharp bell edge. There are a lot of different shape roller feet available, some follow the edge of the bell and some are straight etc. If they are too close they will not feed in much good. .8mm would generally be a good starting point. The grip between the roller and the feed stone most be firm before the knife comes into play and of course the bell has to be close enough to not allow the leather to ride up over the top.
