Clever idea with the leather holder. I had to get someone to hold the knife pulley on the right of the machine so that I could remove and install the knife.

Hi Garth, I am looking to purchase a skiving machine, what are the features I should look for? I have been checking on Amazon , but I am not sure what features to check for.
All of the machines on the market with exception of a few high-end models are exactly the same. I would look locally at an industrial sewing center to see if they sell them. Freight will run you about $500-$700 right now!
@@MythLeatherCo i got a vintage skiving machine by Seiko. It's smaller than the usual machine. The model is Seiko DSC S1, it is very challenging to find a good source of info here and in Google.
@@MythLeatherCo I'm wondering if German steel will hold up better to the heat that's generated when skiving vegetable tanned saddle leather. My Nippy 301A is made of Japanese steel and got pretty hot. The Nippy 301N is made of German steel and might hold up to heat better. If that's true, I should just get a Fortuna knife.
@@pequodexpress I think you’ll be ok either way. I’d definitely use what you have for now. Worst case, you need to sharpen more often, which I recommend really keeping that knife extra sharp. 99% of the problems that other makers contact me with are due to a dull knife.
@@MythLeatherCo With these skiving machines, all the variables matter. I ordered a Fortuna "S" knife today for my 801. I want to see if there is a noticeable difference between the hardened German steel of the Fortuna and the SKS51 Japanese steel of the Nippy 301A, which I assume is not hardened. Apparently, the 301A is not intended for the Japanese domestic market. The 301 and 301N are. Both are hardened German steel, with extra-hardening on the 301N. I plan to use my inexpensive grinding stones with the Fortuna knife, even though I have read that one is supposed to match the grinding stone to the knife properly. This will be another experiment. I figure the worst case scenario is that the hardened German steel will use up the inexpensive grinding stones more quickly and maybe make more of a mess.
