  • You may have wondered about the Mormon practice called baptism for the dead. What is it? Why does it matter? Let’s talk about it.
2000 years ago, Jesus went to the Jordan River and was baptized by immersion, lowered fully under the water, by John the Baptist. By doing this, Jesus showed us two things: first, that each of us needs to be baptized as He was; second, a baptism must be performed by somebody with authority from God. But here’s the problem. What about those millions of people who died without baptism, or who were baptized but without proper authority?
Thats where Mormon temples and the practice of baptism for the dead come in.

What a wonderful comment, and what strange misunderstanding in some of the replies. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints accept Jesus Christ as our savior--the only way to salvation. Christ himself taught of the necessity of baptism during His mortal ministry as described in the Bible. Through baptism we accept Christ as our savior and covenant with God to follow Christ as His disciples. We perform baptisms by proxy for the dead so that they have the opportunity to do the same.

Viewing the words 'they' and 'we' are critical in this context. In all of Paul's letters, he used 'we' for Christ following Christians and 'they' for other churches and unbelievers. He's clearly not referring to baptism as a critical life saving act for human souls. He does not tell them to practice it!!

And if you read the whole chapter it does talk about the resurrection. If the resurrection wouldn't happen then baptisms for the dead would not be necessary, but we do rise, and so they are necessary. This is why the gospel was preached to those that are dead.

All men and women will have the chance to hear the truth and free agency is given upon them to choose to either accept the Savior or to reject the Savior. Our faith and actions in this life are definitely important, but there absolutely are things that must be done for the dead who were unable to do everything here. Hi Lynn, we apologize for being slow answering your question. FamilySearch.org is the Church's nonprofit family history organization and accounts are free and available to the public. As described in this video, members of the Church are able to complete temple ordinances like baptism for the dead for deceased persons to whom they are related, which are then recorded on FamilySearch. According to Church doctrine, a departed soul in the afterlife is completely free to accept or reject such a baptism - the offering is freely given and must be freely received. The ordinance does not force deceased persons to become members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, nor does the Church list deceased persons as members of the Church. I knew there was a higher power and I dug Jesus as a great person and his teachings are all amazing. I could not find many answers and I saw so much bitterness towards others of different faiths from many pastors who seem to want to insight fear from their followers with barbaric consequences if they do not get the religion. I thought," man Jesus is not like that at all?" I'm also a scientists and needed science to make since with whatever my journey ended up teaching me. Then I fell in love with the LDS church, as my understandings of the universe and my part in it just made sense. I am not convinced but this way that they seem to genuinely love, respect, and care about people is so awesome. I kind of want to put in my will to ask a Mormon very nicely to do this for me. I am not convinced now, but, if I die and find out I was living in ignorance, I'd like the opportunity to do better. Shout out to anyone who has ever been a proxy. Well, because "but after this the judgement" does not mean immediately after you die, but after this earthly life comes the judgement, once all have lived and Christ comes and finishes His work, then there will be the 2nd resurrection and then the final judgement.

The phrase “on behalf of the dead” is not actually in the Greek. The Greek word can mean “for” or “for the sake of,” not “on behalf of.” this is reflected in more modern English translations (NKJV, NABRE, NIV, etc.)
The best explanation I've seen for 1 Corinthians 15:29 goes as follows:
Those who were baptized for the dead were baptized “for” them in the sense of taking their place on the church membership roll. In other words, when believers died (many through martyrdom), new believers came forward to occupy the places left vacant by their absence. Paul’s logic is, why would these new believers put their own lives at risk (knowing that baptism would mark them for martyrdom) if there is no life after death?
Those baptized for the dead were brought to faith in Christ by the testimonies of those now dead. The hope of resurrection espoused by the recently deceased believers continued in the faith of the newly baptized.
I hope this brings a sense of clarity to those that find the LDS interpretation lacking, misinformed or superficial. God Bless.

The Catholic Church, the Orthodox churches and even most Protestant denominations do not consider Mormonism as a Christian Religion. For their concept differs from Christianity. 1) Different Godhead, 2) Exaltation concept, 3) Baptism of the dead, 4) Spirit World, 5) Concept of Baptism, 6) The concept of Hell, etc. Those are reasons the LDS is not recognized as Christian, also the Jesus-Christ they're speaking about is a creature and not the incarnation of Almighty God which is the Christian Creed.

1 Peter 3:19-20 "By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; (20) Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water." (KJV)- This verse is not just in the KJV bible, it's in every bible. Read it yourself before you make judgements. Remove the plank in your eye before you judge.

Hmmm ... but their own Mormon Bible contradicts this teaching ... saying, “For behold, if ye have procrastinated the day of your repentance even until death, behold ye have become subjected to the spirit of the devil, and he does seal you his. Therefore, the spirit of the Lord has withdrawn from you and hath no place in you; the power of the devil is over you, and this is the final state of the wicked.” … "And this I know, because the Lord hath said he dwelleth not in unholy temples, but in the hearts of the righteous doth he dwell; yea, and he has also said that the righteous shall sit down in his kingdom, to go no more out; but their garments should be made white through the blood of the Lamb." - Alma 34:35-36
It is noteworthy that the scriptures that directly mention death in connection with baptized ones refer to living individuals who had been baptized and not to those who had died. Paul also told fellow anointed Christians: “You were buried with him in his baptism, and by relationship with him you were also raised up together through your faith in the operation of God, who raised him up from the dead.”-Colossians 2:12.

It is obvious that they (Mormons) have misinterpreted what Paul is stating at 1Cor 15:29 ... after all, baptism is related to Christian discipleship, and dead souls cannot be disciples. (John 4:1)
It's also worth mentioning that Paul corrected many false teachings trying to infiltrate the Christian congregation (which eventually happened). Thus the reason why such teachings exist today creating all sorts of religions! So even in Paul's day, some were even teaching the resurrection had already occurred 2 Tim 2:17,18. Here at Chapter 15 of 1st Cor. Paul is now correcting the false teaching that some were teaching there is no resurrection. At 1st Cor 15: 20-23 Paul knew he would be dead for a period of time “. . .But each one in his own proper order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who belong to the Christ during his presence. . .” - 1Co 15:23.
Nobody is resurrected till Jesus begins ruling! Paul corrected 2 false teachings concerning the resurrection of his day ...
Hmmm ... Does anybody ever wonder what this means? “. . .and you made them to be a kingdom and priests to our God, and they are to rule as kings over the earth.”” - Re 5:10

Wapper Jaw, note that as Paul uses the Corinthian practice of baptism for the dead in his argument for the reality of the resurrection, he doesn’t condemn the practice. In a letter full of condemnations, that’s arguably an affirmation.
How does a passage about not procrastinating repentance “disprove” the practice of baptism for the dead? Baptism for the dead is preformed for those who never had the chance to be baptized in their lifetime at all. That passage just doesn’t apply.

The passage from Alma is in the Book of Mormon, not a "Mormon Bible", and it's not a contradiction at all. You're missing a number of other things, such as the resurrection of many immediately following the resurrection of Jesus Christ in Matthew 27:52. Paul was quite direct in referring to baptisms for the dead, and also in describing Jesus' mission to preach to the dead in the Spirit World between His death and resurrection. I wish you the best in your further scriptural studies, though.

  • @jameswong999

Baptism of the dead does not take place on sound scriptural basis. It is nonsense. It is a pagan ritual that was common in Greek religions. Paul, in 1 Corinthians 15, talks about the inconsistencies of practices of false teachers in the historical context of the church in Corinth. The point of his writing is to emphasize the resurrection from the dead, and he does nowhere say that it is good to baptize the dead (via a proxy or other method). Baptism for the dead cannot - by scriptural evidence - lead to salvation in any way. The only way to salvation is faith in Jesus Christ. No works, deeds or rituals can help in the salvation of a human being, as it is only the belief in and acceptance of Jesus Christ and what He has done for you. There is so much evidence against the baptism of the dead, that even this misinterpretation of 1 Corinthians 15:29 cannot be apparent.
Go and read up on it yourself. Seriously. Read what comes before it and read what comes after. Get an understanding of what is going on, what is the author trying to say, and then figure out if the explanation you were given makes sense.

    • @00Fisher00
      @00Fisher00 4 года назад +1

Many of us have studied the passages extensively, and proxy baptism is very much based on a sound scriptural basis, both in the Bible and in other scripture. Paul is indeed teaching about resurrection, but citing incorrect practices doesn't strengthen any teaching, so he would have no reason to do that.
Jesus Christ is indeed the way to salvation, and He himself taught that baptism was necessary and also served as an example to us by being baptized Himself. Baptism is as important for those who have died as for those who have not died yet. Christ also taught that what we do is vital for our salvation when he said, "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven." (Matthew 7:21)

Whether or not the dead accept the baptisms performed for them is entirely up to them. You seem to be misunderstanding the whole motivation for doing this, though. It is only a service rendered to others according to God's will.

The thief on the cross was told that he would be with christ in "paradise." But what is "paradise" and where is it? Christ and this thief die and they go to "paradise" right? But when Christ is resurrected on the third day what does He say to Mary? "Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God."
So He went to "paradise" but never went to His Father or heaven? That is exactly right. Paradise is not heaven. Paradise is a place where the dead who have accepted Christ, wait for the resurrection and the judgement. This thief believed in Christ, only on His word, and now would have the opportunity in death, in paradise, to learn of Christ and His gospel and accept Him or not.
1 Peter chapters 3 and 4 speak of Christ preaching the gospel to the dead. It is obvious that this is where Christ went during the time in which He was dead, before His resurrection.
As for Cornelius, the Spirit can come to anyone who diligently seeks Christ... you don't have to belong to any religion for that to happen... but the Spirit will always direct you to Christ's church just as it did Cornelius and his followers.

You are right that our own faith is necessary. If someone does not accept Christ, then a proxy baptism for them does not help. However, if they do accept Christ, then a proxy baptism affords them an opportunity they may not have had in life. Pertinent Biblical references are John 3:5 - "Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God." and 1 Corinthians 15:29 - "29 Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?" For example, 1 Corinthians 15:29, which reads, "Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?" We see the importance of being authorized by God to do His work in passages like Hebrews 5:4, which reads,
"And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron." Verses 1-3 in that chapter refer to high priests and explain some of their work, and verse 4 makes it clear that God didn't say for people to take His work upon themselves without being authorized and called. One man in the parable had opportunities to listen to God's prophets and follow God's will but rejected it all. He didn't like the result, but being dead didn't do anything to increase his faith in Jesus Christ. Proxy baptism would not help him.
It also won't help some other people, but when we perform proxy baptisms for our ancestors we have no way of knowing what is in their hearts. We perform the ordinance without knowing, and it is up to them to have true faith in Jesus Christ. Then what's the point of Hell? Wouldn't everyone that is dead want to live again? And to live again you have to believe in Jesus Christ. So all the dead would choose to be baptized and resurrected sounds like an Egyptian practice

    • @monocuco818
      @monocuco818 Год назад

It isn't exactly like that. You see when Christ was crucified, He told one of the thieves that they would go to "paradise." But that doesn't mean they went to "heaven."
So Christ and this thief die, and they go to "paradise." BUT when Christ resurrects on the third day what does He say to Mary? "touch me not, for I am not yet ascended to the Father."
So He went to paradise, which is a place for the spirits that were good and those who believed in christ. "Hell" or "prison" is this same spirit world, but contains the spirits of people who did evil in this world or who rejected Christ.
1 Peter chapters 3 and 4 teach us that when Christ went here, He preached the gospel to those who were dead, and in prison.
In other words, the gospel was preached and is being taught to those who are dead, just like those who are alive. Which means that many people still have not heard the gospel and many have still rejected it. Christ is doing His work here as well as in the spirit world to bring ALL of His children to Him.
In the Book of Mormon it talks about this, saying we can't assume that we can be sinful and not accept the gospel in this life and in the next we will just be completely different and ready to accept it. It will still be challenging, if not more challenging to accept the gospel.
This is what the Book of Mormon says:
Alma 34: 32-34 For behold, this life is the time for men to prepare to meet God; yea, behold the day of this life is the day for men to perform their labors. And now, as I said unto you before, as ye have had so many witnesses, therefore I beseech of you that ye do not procrastinate the day of your repentance until the end; for after this day of life, whic is given us to prepare for eternity, behold, if we do not improve our time while in this life, then cometh the night of darkness wherein there can be no labor performed. Ye cannot say, when ye are brought to that awful crisis, that I will repent, that I will return to my God. Nay, ye cannot say this; for that same spirit which doth possess your bodies at the time that ye go out of this life, that same spirit will have power to possess your body in that eternal world."
In other words, we are the same in this life, whether dead or alive. We need to believe in Christ now. But that doesn't mean we won't have the opportunity after this life to accept it.

James, Paul mentions it as a practice the Corinthians preformed, when he uses it in passing while making an argument in 1 Corinthians 15. Verse 29, to be specific. He arguably affirms the practice, seeing as he doesn’t condemn it, and 1 Corinthians is full of condemnations.
Beyond that, historically, some groups of early Christians also preformed the ordinance, though they were later labeled “heretical” for that and other reasons.

14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?
15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to *fulfil all righteousness*. Then he suffered him. Matthew 3
19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.
29 Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?
    1 Cor 15
9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
    10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. Phil 2
28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. John 5
18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen. Matthew 28

1 Peter chapter 3 and 4 talk about Christ preaching the gospel to the dead. 1 Corinthians 15:29 specifically mentions baptism for the dead, however it is not a clear scripture.
One of my favorites is when Christ tells the thief that when they died they would both go to "paradise." However when Christ is resurrected, He tells Mary not to touch Him because "I have not yet ascended to my Father." Meaning He went to a place called "paradise," but not heaven where His father is? That is exactly what happened. Paradise is where the spirits of the dead wait for the resurrection and here they are taught the gospel.

    • @andrewdurfee3896

Priesthood power is the authority of God delegated to man to bring about salvation for Gods children. The Bible teaches that there we be a falling away from Christs gospel or an apostasy before he came back again. 2 Thessalonians 2:1-3 Some sighs that were given that the apostasy occurred and had were that they would teach the forbidding of marriage (celibacy) and the abstaining of meat. (Fishfriday).1 Timothy 4:1-3 The priesthood keys given to Peter to bind and seal on earth and in heaven (and lose on earth and in heaven)were lost when all the apostles were killed as Christ said they would be. Naturally there there would have to be a restoration of these keys by God in order for any work done by man to be acceptable to him. As members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints we believe that God restored his true and living church and priesthood through the prophet Joseph Smith. That those keys are lodged in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints today and are held by our current prophet Russel M. Nelson and the others apostles. (Quorum of the Twelve apostles) There if you have baptisms which are not not done with proper authority it avails the individual nothing. Therefore they will be need to be rebaptized with proper authority in order to be acceptable to God. Hence why when we teach people of not of our faith who have already been baptized the need to be baptized with proper authority, of course there are many people who have died before having the opportunity to be baptized with the proper authority while they were alive who now have opportunity through baptism for the dead though a proxy as explained in the video. This is not all however there are many people on the earth who have died without even hearing of Jesus Christ, what about them? The answer baptism for the dead. In 1 Corinthians 15 Paul writes a epistle to a group that doesn’t believe in the resurrection and therefore are don’t understand why they are doing baptism for the dead. Paul answers eloquently that there is a resurrection and the dead will rise again. Because their is a resurrection they are baptizing for the dead and the work they are doing is valid and necessary .1 Corinthians 15:13-14, 20-22, 29. Hope this gives some clarity.

"He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy." (Proverbs 29:1) We have our chance in life. Whoever doesn't choose to accept or to seek truth (Matthew 7:7, "seek and you will find") will suddenly be destroyed, . "Suddenly being destroyed" refers to death, and whoever dies in their sins goes to hell. Baptism of the dead is believed to be a remedy to that death, the remedy that God said would never exist. So unless God is lying, baptism of the dead is useless.

For those who have passed on without the ordinance of baptism, proxy baptism for the deceased is a free will offering of familial love. According to Church doctrine, a departed soul in the afterlife is completely free to accept or reject such a baptism - the offering is freely given and must be freely received. There is something I don't understand. If the baptism for the dead happens, in order to the dead ancestors have the opportunity to join god's kingdom, then what happens when they weren't believing to god at all? I mean if god judges us for our actions, will the dead who had had proxy baptism be judged the same way, even if they lived sinfully without reppentance?

    • @00Fisher00
      @00Fisher00 3 года назад

Those who don't believe simply won't accept the baptism performed for them by proxy, and no harm is done; we don't mind performing the ordinance even when we don't know whether the deceased person will accept the ordinance or not. It's not unlike service that we render for people who are still alive; no matter what we do for them, including conducting their own live baptism, all people are still free to choose faith in Jesus Christ and repentance through His Atonement, or something else. Making covenants is essential, but so are enduring faith and repentance.

Read chapter 3 and 4 in 1 Peter. They are taught the gospel and can choose to accept the Savior and His gospel or not, then they can be judged just as us, who are living. But if they have not had baptism then they could not enter into the kingdom of God. That is where we come in. We do baptisms for everyone we can, so that if that person actually accepts the Lord in the next life, then they can also accept the baptism that we did for them. If they don't accept the gospel and the Lord in the next life, then they won't accept the baptism that has been done on their behalf. It is always their choice, just like it is our choice to follow the Lord in this life.

Exactly, that's the verse and Paul even cleared that "...why are they then baptized for the dead?" If the dead will not rise again, why then baptize them? Water baptism is for the REMISSION of sins that will cater a person to a NEW LIFE and live following Christ. Baptism for the dead is non-sense because it can't do anything for a person, he doesn't know it either.

@@IMAPENTECOSTAL_ If the dead were not to rise again, then there would be no need to baptize them. However, thanks to the Atonement of Jesus Christ, all will be resurrected. 1 Corinthians 15:22 "For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive." Jesus Christ's Atonement was not only for the living, but the dead also, as we read in 1 Peter 3:18-19. "18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison".

1 Peter chapter 3 also speaks of Christ preaching to the dead. Not to mention, Christ would be a partial God if He did not attempt to save ALL of His children... not just the ones who were lucky enough to hear of Him and accept Him before they died. It is one of the most important parts of Christ's Atonement, that He suffered and died for ALL who will accept Him in life or death.

    How do you know

Hi Luis, thanks for your question. Jesus Christ taught that “except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God” (John 3:5). For those who have passed on without the ordinance of baptism, proxy baptism for the deceased is a free will offering, performed by Latter-day Saints in temples around the world. According to Church doctrine, a departed soul in the afterlife is completely free to accept or reject such a baptism - the offering is freely given and must be freely received. See the link below for a short video explaining the practice of baptisms for the dead: ruclips.net/video/c77vzBiY0zg/видео.html We hope that helps answer your question!

In good standing lol the Bible says No one is good. Mark 10:17-22 As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. ‘Good teacher,’ he asked, ‘what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ ‘Why do you call me good?’ Jesus answered. ‘No one is good - except God alone.

"The living know that they shall die but the dead know not anything." Ecclesiastes 9:5. If the dead know not anything then they can't accept or reject a baptism done for them.

Your interpretation of that passage is insufficient. If the spirits of the dead aren't able to think, then why would Christ ensure that they were taught? Refer to 1 Peter 3:18-19 and 1 Peter 4:6.

You should read 1 Peter 3 and 4 as suggested. Ecclesiastes has a little more to it than what you suggest, as the dead are currently being taught the gospel, the judgement hasn't occurred yet, and Christ Himself went to "paradise" to teach the dead.

"Proxy" and "substitute atonement" are not the same, neither linguistically not theologically. In proxy the authority has to be given to tho the agent at the request of the original person. It is a legal term. Jesus not only took our place, but he atoned by being the perfect, sinless sacrifice. He had the power to take our place, but we could have never being able to pay for our sins.

Jesus atoned for our sins and taught that we must be baptized. He even gave us the example by being baptized Himself. After death, people are unable to request baptism, but as we perform proxy baptisms for our ancestors they are able to accept or reject the ordinance. We give them the opportunity.
