There's a theory that the heart is what kept the grandmother as well as she was, so that she could prepare Moana-- when she passed the stone to Moana, her mission was fulfilled. But yeah this movie is stunning. The colors are just so vivid and bright, and the animation was amazing. Thank you for reviewing it!

i think it was less the stone that kept grandma alive more that grandma promised moana she would be with her and knew her journey would be in spirit. notice at the point grandma returns to moana the first time she is a spirit of a stingray, at the end when moana has finished her journey to restored the heart we see grandma has moved on to be a real stingray as moana doesnt need her in spirit anymore, she has fulfilled her mission and is living her destiny

this is how my ancestors arrived in Aotearoa. huge fleets of massive waka across the Pacific following the stars. most islands in the Pacific share Māui and his stories as we all descended 1000s of years ago from hawakaiiki. i love Moana, its not perfect and not fully 'our' Māui but it captures so much of the spirit of our customs and beliefs and of course it was such a thrill to take my brown neices and nephews to a disney film where everyone looked like them! ❤

History suggests that Polynesians were so intune with their environment that the ocean was easily navigated where then my ancestors settled on islands across the ocean. So yeah a little storm isn’t a problem🤭
The sea is legit not something to muck with. My Dad used to whistle and point to show us kids away from the “rips” as we played in the ocean. I still feel more safe in the ocean than in a human city

Fun fact: Tamatoa the giant crab was actually suposed to be voiced by David Bowie himself, the crab even has 2 different colored eyes, there's even a recording of the song Shiny by Bowie but ... Not long after that he died and they hired Jermaine Clement to do an impression of Bowie 🤔🙂
