- In this video I will show you how to convert Cisco lightweight access point to Autonomous or standalone access point.
Commands: -
ap: delete flash:private-config
ap: delete flash:private-multiple-fs
ap: set IP_ADDR 172.16.10.100
ap: set NETMASK 255.255.255.0
ap: set DEFAULT_ROUTER 172.16.10.12 (TFT Server/ Macbook IP)
ap: tftp_init

This was the easiest procedure I've found to convert the AP into autonomous. It is short, clear, and consistent. Kudos for that.

I am glad that the process went smooth. I usually use SolarWinds TFTP server which is a free product and never had issues with setting that up on Windows 10.

Thanks for posting. Process worked well in my case. Had to fiddle with OpenTftp to prevent a BSOD on my Win10 system during the tar extraction but all ended well.

This video helped out a ton. I am attempting to do this using the "transfer" application from the App Store since it seems a bit easier than trying to enable TFTP from terminal. When I try and have the AP initiate file transfer to grab the file and download it will sit for a second and then state connection timeout. In the log section it'll show the access point connected then zero KB moved. I feel like this would be done easier on a windows machine am I correct? Any insight is super appreciated. Thanks much.

Instead of reseting mine goes to U-Boot and then i have to type boot to get back to lightweight. Do you have a fix?

If you wish to run Autonomous IOS only I would suggest you format the flash and follow the steps in the video.

ROY 564 I have never tried that on the specific model but most of the models I have converted worked great without any issue.

Here you are all you need is the K9W7 which is for autonomous mode.
ROY 564 it looks like path to the Boot files are not defined you can see the description on how to see or set the boot files.

Abhijeet, yes, it will cover most of the models but there will be not much difference the process will remain the same. Also, it convert the access point into Autonomous mode means the AP itself don't need to connect through the WLC. It will act as a standalone access point.
is it it possible to do this via ssh/telnet rather than the console port?
Sure, there are multiple ways to do it. The first works great as I have described in the video but requires a console cable plugged directly to your access point.
The second method allows you to downgrade without having the console cable but you must have SSH or Telnet configured on your device and the process is straight forward.
debug capwap console cli (enables full range of CLI commands, like config terminal that are not available in lap cli.)
archive download-sw /overwrite tftp://IP-ADDR-GOES-HERE/file-name-goes-here.tar

I have 3501I cisco i can't change mode lightweight to standalone once i put password there can't type
what if the AP is wiped out prior to setting up? i keep having issues after the -xtract part

SAP or standalone requires you to manage each access point individually and with lightweight, you can control multiple wireless access points at once.

You can get rid of the old image and that should free up some space. Please follow the example below.

hi, after i typed in tar -xtract tftp://172.16.10.12/c1140-k9w7-tar.153-3.JD.tar flash:, its stayed still for a while and said "CONNECTION TIME OUT" i have a feeling its the connection between the CISCO and tftp server? any ideas how to check make sure the connection between the 2 is connect and talking to each other?
Emily T, Connection timout means your device is unable to establish the connection to your TFTP box.
Please make sure Windows local firewall/ Antivirus is not blocking any incoming connection to your TFTP. Verify TFTP service is started and double check your TFTP bindings with the interface IP.
I would also recommend you to go with SolarWinds TFTP server which is freely available on Solarwinds website.

You can test it by reestablishing the session on your AP and check the logs on your TFTP.
Just make sure you when you type set DEFAULT_ROUTER x.x.x.x point that ip to the TFTP Server.

Hi, i just stop the firewall and i can see the communication between ap and tftp server now , but there is an error which i have no ideas what this mean, the error message is “” FILE error 10054 in system call recv An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host”””

After rebooting I get the "%LWAPP-5-CHANGED: LWAPP changed state to DISCOVERY" message, and can't give any SET commands. :/

You can use SolarWinds it's a free tool and very simple to setup. Here is the link to download the tool, all you need to fill the form to download the setup file.
