Great tutorial - thanks. Helpful explanation about the difference between a folder and an album. Also, liked the smart album section. I didn't realise you can do so much with smart albums.

Hi @partch! I think that could be a nice feature to be able to identify if a single photo is already within a particular album. Love your video! Does this albums duplicate the storage of the pictures? I mean having them in both sites, on the general album and the ones we create to organizing?
Great question @Marco Flores! I'm happy you love my content! No, the duplicate of storage and taking up double the space does not happen when you add photos into an Album. It just references it to the actual photo that lives in the Library. I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! If you haven’t already, please support me by subscribing! It helps more than you know and is greatly appreciated! If you know someone who may benefit from this video, feel free to share it along!
Hi @david black! Thanks for the kind words! So currently the mobile devices like the iPad and iPhone do not have the smart album feature! I have no idea why and Apple for sure should add this as an option! Thanks so much for watching and if you'd like to support my videos by subscribing, that would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you for this great training. Now I need help understanding labeling photos, I recent went through my photos from a trip writing descriptions in the caption box and when I sent the photos alll my hard work did not forward with the photos...???
Thanks, finally I understand how the "Photos" app relates to the "Photos" library. Apple sure likes to confuse things through unhelpful naming. I have a question though: What if you selected the option to optimize your storage on your mac, so the full resolution versions of a lot of your photos live in iCloud. How does that affect all this? (I saw in the video that you had the opposite selected, i.e. your photos all lived on your hard drive in full resolution). Thanks!
Hi @Beatrix Pall! Thanks so much for watching and great question! My personal opinion is that it's best to optimize the storage space on mobile devices, or if your Mac has a somewhat smaller hard drive like a 128GB or 256GB I would optimize it too. But it really depends on how much space your photos takes up and how much you personally plan to grow over the years to come. I've kept my older laptop to be specifically dedicated to my Photos library and training. By downloading the originals, it gives me the ability to always have access to 100% of all my files if I'm on the road and I don't have to rely 100% on the cloud. For all of my mobile devices, I always optimize my storage, and on my main laptop that I use for video editing, I have it optimized as well to save space. So I would say, there's no right or wrong way to do it as it depends on the devices and storage space you have available. Another benefit I could see is just for backup purposes using TimeMachine...by having the originals downloaded, you could then feel confident that all the files are safe in another location. I hope this helps and make sense a little! Thanks again for watching and I appreciate the support!
Hello Joel, I've been watching your videos lately to better understand how mac works with photos. Question, can you open the photos with photoshop from iphotos (from an album, or from iphotos library). And once I'm done editing that certain photo, what is the best way to save it or import it back to iphotos?
Hi @Leigh Francis Nemenzo! So if you haven't found the answer so far, here's the easiest thing to do! Whenever you're in Apple Photos, just "right click" on any photo and choose "edit with". This will give you options to open up that photo with another third party application like Photoshop and edit inside that Application. When you make your edits and save it let's say in Photoshop, that same exact file in Apple Photos get's updated to show and reflect those changes! At any given time you can revert that photo back to the original too! One thing to note however that once Photoshop is closed, it does not retain any layers in Photoshop. It pretty much merges those changes and reflects them in Apple Photos. If you needed to go back to that photo and re-edit with the previous changes, you would not be able to. So if that is the case, you'll need to do a "save as" in Photoshop and save it as a .psd file someplace else if you need to go back. Hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching and I appreciate the support!
Thanks for the kind words @Paul Pauld! I'm happy this hopefully solved your issue! RUclips does not have a PayPal option, but the do have Super Thanks! hey I'm wondering, can you upload a .mp4, .heic, .hevc files onto iphotos into album from a Mac? and will that file when you moved a specific file onto iPhotos, show up on my iPhone too?
Hi @itimdesigner! You should have no problem uploading those formats into an iCloud Photo Album on your Mac. If you have iCloud Photos syncing turned on, they should then also appear on your iPhone. Below are the file formats quoted from the Apple Support article also listed below: "This includes HEIF, JPEG, RAW, PNG, GIF, TIFF, HEVC, and MP4 as well as special formats you capture with your iPhone or iPad, like slo-mo, time-lapse, 4K videos, and Live Photos." Set up and use iCloud Photos support.apple.com/en-us/HT204264 I hope that helps! THANK YOU so much for watching! It is appreciated more than you know! Hi @SamsuuddinIslam! Apple Photos in a Mac only Application. However you can access your photos on iCloud via a website, but the options are very limited. You wouldn't be able to edit and organize as well as you can within the App. Thank you so much for taking your time to watch this video. It is greatly appreciated! If this video has been beneficial, I would be honored if you would consider sharing it with your social media network and expressing your gratitude for its assistance. Is it possible to import photos by album to iPhoto library? Many photos on my phone are grouped together already, I don’t want to lose this grouping once i import.
Hey @Bellamy Cassidy! I'm guessing you're not using iCloud Photos if the albums only live on your iPhone? I'm almost certain that those albums only live on the iPhone. If you were using iCloud Photos, these albums would already be in your Apple Photos and you would never have to plug your iPhone in to import anything. However when you do plug it in, Apple Photos will just see your iPhone as a camera and will most likely show you everything. I know that when you do manual syncing through iTunes or Finder, it gives you the ability to sync certain albums from the Mac to the iPhone, but based off what I know, the Mac will replace your iPhone with what the Mac has... I have a support article from Apple below that i'll link for reference... Sync your photos manually using the Finder support.apple.com/en-us/HT201313 Based off that article, creating photo albums on the iPhone if you're not using iCloud would be not recommend as they only live on that device... I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! If you haven’t already, please support me by subscribing! It helps more than you know and is greatly appreciated! If you know someone who may benefit from this video, feel free to share it along!
You got it @Mario Alatriste! Do it on the Mac and it makes your life so much easier. If you have an iPhone or iPad, you can still create folders and albums, but you have to create albums in the pre-created folders first, it will not let you move them into other folders. So create on your Mac! Thanks so much for watching! I appreciate the support!
Great video Joel. Can I ask you. If you have smart albums and you want to delete them from your mac in order to get extra space, are they going to delete from the iphone as well? What solution do you have for that? So you can have the photos organized on your phone but not on the mac. Thank you!
Great question! So if you're utilizing iCloud photos, then yes they would delete from every device that is being turned on with that feature. You would have to turn off iCloud photos and then you would be managing photos in multiple places. I'll be doing some videos soon on understanding iCloud photos and how the eco system works.
Thanks for the feedback @MrGomezk! This is one of my earlier videos and audio is not necessarily my forte! I've hoped it's improved in my more recent content! Hope you come back soon! Hi Joel I am really new at this. I am 64 yrs old. And it is hard to comprehend but we are video help me a lot thank you so much.BUT once I put my photos in my album that I named. do I go back to PHOTOS and delete those photos that I or ready put in my album that I made ??
Hello Christina! Thanks so much for watching and i'm so happy i'm able to help. If you're organizing pictures into Albums, they are only a reference to the actual photo that lives in the main photo library. So for example, if you delete a photo out of the Main Photos, it will delete it from the album also, so be careful! If you delete a photo out of a regular album, it will not be completely deleted from Photos, it is just removed from the album.
Thanks!! my only question is regardless if i sort my photos into albums and folders ? the very top tab will still show "all" my photos regardless is there anyway to get rid of that?
You'll always have the main tabs at the top that say: "Years", "Months", "Days", and "All Photos" as that's the built in options for the Photos Library. The pictures that you organize into Albums are just references to the ones in Photos Library located in the top left. Anything you delete/edit from there will affect the photos in your albums.
Hi @Virgilio Abellon, great question! The regular albums that are within Apple Photos you can't really share, however you can create a "Shared Photo Album" really easily! I have a whole video dedicated to Shared Photo Albums that may help! iCloud Photo SHARED ALBUMS - GET STARTED with sharing photos with ANYONE on ANY DEVICE! ruclips.net/video/vU0MRfm2utI/видео.html I hope that helps! How do I correct text typed on photos after the editing and typing have been saved? For example, perhaps I missed an incorrect date when proofreading. I've been using Preview App, tools, to add text to photos. I've found no way of going back to correct -- I've had to start over with another copy of the photo and type everything in again.
Hi @judith sayed! So it sounds like you're taking photos directly out of Photos the app and then bringing them into Preview and then using the Markup tool? Usually Preview saves varies revisions and versions for you... Try this: Open up one of the files that you want to revert back and go to: File > Revert to > Browse all Versions This will give you two documents side by side and on the right it should show you all of the previous versions back to the original photo file, and then you can choose "Restore" Preview is a very nice app, but does have some limitations. Do you add text and such a lot to photos? Keep in mind you can do this directly within the Photos app! :-) Hope this helps! Thanks so much for watching and I appreciate the support!
Lets say I am continually adding photos to an album. When I look at the album I would like to see the photos I just added first and not last. Basically newest first and oldest last. Is this possible?
Hi @ Hans Koscielny! So Albums do have some sorting options, but you really only have three choices...sort by title, sort by newest (by date) and soft by oldest (by date). It does not organize based off when you've added photos to it. When you have the album selected, you can right click on it and choose "Sort" or in the top menu bar click on View > Sort and this is where the options will live. Albums are very manual. You can drag the photos around in any order you want, but be careful. The moment you choose a sort option, you will lose your manual organization! I personal don't use albums all that much anymore as I primarily find a photo based off location, people or date. Hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching and I appreciate the continued support!

It would have been worth mentioning, that albums can be synced between devices (with the same iCloud id), but Smart Albums cannot be synced! I do not understand why Apple has not yet implemented this feature! Perhaps because albums are static whereas smart albums are dynamic!?
Absolutely agree! The ability to sync the smart albums you would think should be a no brainer! We'll add that to the wish list! At least the shared albums among different users works pretty darn well!
I organized photos using albums and folders, however now on my phone/ipad when trying to select the photos in Facebook or Instagram, the folders do not show up... Any idea why?
Hey Stephanie, there are so many variables to that question. I would check updates for all software and apps if the issue isn't resolved yet! Thanks for watching!
Carol, good question. You may have already figured out the answer but just in case you haven’t I wanted to reply. All of your pictures are stored in one area - and one area only - and that is the location you referred to as “all pictures”. When you create an album that album does NOT create new photos, it only points to those photos you selected to belong to that album. This is easy to verify by taking a look at the actual storage on your device drive (Mac, iPhone, iPad), i.e., no matter how many albums you create and/or how many photos you select to put in those albums, your photos storage level never increases. I hope this helps.
Alex Davis when sorting my mixed up photos I would like to put a picture into an album and be done with it. I don’t like to keep looking at it when I scroll through all photos. This way I would know which ones I had not put away in an album.
You can make a smart album with all photos exept the ones in a folder. That means it automatically updates the folder once you put a picture in a folder. When the folder is empty you are done sorting. Hope that helps.
Hi Carol, I think I understand what you're looking to do. I too can get overwhelmed with the amount of endless scrolling of photos within the Photos Library. As mentioned from @Alex Davis above, the photos added in albums is only a reference file pointing to the actual original photo that is stored in the All Photos Library. It seems to always be that way. If you're wanting to make sure all of your photos are organized into albums, you can utilize Smart Albums. I actually did this when I was organizing all of my photos. I created one Smart album that had the criteria of "Album" - "Is Not" - "Any" What this would do is show you every photo that is not organized into an album. You would then drag photos out of this Smart Album to albums and they would slowly disappear from the smart album and by the time you were left with no photos, you would know that every photo in your library is in an album.
Hi @Glamma V! You are 100% correct! I must have missed that important detail in this particular video! I do have a whole video dedicated on Smart Albums on your Mac that I do point this important detail out in! I'll link it down below for reference! I need a video that speaks to me like I’m 3. How did these photos get on your computer from your device. Let’s start there 😂 Signed, Old lady who doesn’t know jack shit
Great question @Christine St. Clair•Style Revised by C. St. Clair! The double edged sword is that there are multiple ways to get photos to your computer from a device. The most convenient way typically is using a cloud service like iCloud Photos, Google Photos, Amazon Photos, the list can go on and on. Services like these allow you to take a photo on your iPhone and then the picture will automatically sync wirelessly to your computer without plugging it in with any cable. If you use iCloud, I'll link some videos below that may be helpful with understanding that concept. Understanding iCLOUD PHOTOS - Syncing iPhones, iPads, and Apple Computers IN-DEPTH ruclips.net/video/59Yjdbh1Q88/видео.html I'm actually working on a video right now that covers options for manually plugging a device into a computer to import photos, so stay tuned! Interesting, there could be lots of variables to that. First off, is it still happening? What model mac do you have? What Mac OSX are you running? What version of Photos do you have and have you checked all of your software updates?

Very helpful - thanks

Thanks I think I have realise why I couldn't place my pics where wanted to. Excellent video. I was going to donate but there is not a Paypal option.

Can you do this with an iPad?
hey I'm wondering, can you upload a .mp4, .heic, .hevc files onto iphotos into album from a Mac? and will that file when you moved a specific file onto iPhotos, show up on my iPhone too?
Hi @itimdesigner!
You should have no problem uploading those formats into an iCloud Photo Album on your Mac. If you have iCloud Photos syncing turned on, they should then also appear on your iPhone.
Below are the file formats quoted from the Apple Support article also listed below:
"This includes HEIF, JPEG, RAW, PNG, GIF, TIFF, HEVC, and MP4 as well as special formats you capture with your iPhone or iPad, like slo-mo, time-lapse, 4K videos, and Live Photos."
Set up and use iCloud Photos

Hi @SamsuuddinIslam!
Apple Photos in a Mac only Application. However you can access your photos on iCloud via a website, but the options are very limited. You wouldn't be able to edit and organize as well as you can within the App.

Sync your photos manually using the Finder
support.apple.com/en-us/HT201313
Based off that article, creating photo albums on the iPhone if you're not using iCloud would be not recommend as they only live on that device...

Basically, we need to create Albums first then move them accordingly into the desired Folders. That is the main idea!
How do u do that without the photos trying to upload the icloud
How do you alphabetize the album’s?
I transferred all my photos to new iMac 3 - the titles of all my individual pics don’t appear as before? How do i retrieve my individual titles?
Great video Joel. Can I ask you. If you have smart albums and you want to delete them from your mac in order to get extra space, are they going to delete from the iphone as well? What solution do you have for that? So you can have the photos organized on your phone but not on the mac. Thank you!
Great question! So if you're utilizing iCloud photos, then yes they would delete from every device that is being turned on with that feature. You would have to turn off iCloud photos and then you would be managing photos in multiple places. I'll be doing some videos soon on understanding iCloud photos and how the eco system works.
Really good tutorial but had to leave early, the musuc was just distracting/annoying

Excellent! I had no idea that smart albums could do so much.. thanks!
You're very welcome! Glad I can help! Hope to make some updated content soon!
Can I still organize in albums like depicted in this video? I'm trying but it just merges pictures from the albums I'm trying to bring into a folder?
Even in 2023 it is still not possible. A big frustration.
Thanks!! my only question is regardless if i sort my photos into albums and folders ? the very top tab will still show "all" my photos regardless is there anyway to get rid of that?
You'll always have the main tabs at the top that say: "Years", "Months", "Days", and "All Photos" as that's the built in options for the Photos Library. The pictures that you organize into Albums are just references to the ones in Photos Library located in the top left. Anything you delete/edit from there will affect the photos in your albums.
@@Learnwithjoel Thanking you for your very swift reply!! Ok I guess I just have to live with it!! lol
You organize your photos into albums can you copy one photo album so you can share to your friends thank youJoel
Hi @Virgilio Abellon, great question!
The regular albums that are within Apple Photos you can't really share, however you can create a "Shared Photo Album" really easily!

Try this:
Open up one of the files that you want to revert back and go to:
File > Revert to > Browse all Versions
This will give you two documents side by side and on the right it should show you all of the previous versions back to the original photo file, and then you can choose "Restore"
Preview is a very nice app, but does have some limitations. Do you add text and such a lot to photos? Keep in mind you can do this directly within the Photos app! :-)
Hope this helps!

At least the shared albums among different users works pretty darn well!
great tutorital but wow do i hate having an apple, in windows its so fast to right click cut/copy no dragging
The background music is incredibly distracting!!! Couldn’t watch the entire video due to the music
I would like to be able to create albums then delete the picture from all pictures
Carol, I don’t know anyway to do that?
You can make a smart album with all photos exept the ones in a folder. That means it automatically updates the folder once you put a picture in a folder. When the folder is empty you are done sorting. Hope that helps.
Hi Carol,
I think I understand what you're looking to do.
I created one Smart album that had the criteria of "Album" - "Is Not" - "Any"
What this would do is show you every photo that is not organized into an album. You would then drag photos out of this Smart Album to albums and they would slowly disappear from the smart album and by the time you were left with no photos, you would know that every photo in your library is in an album.
You did not mention that if a Smart album is deleted, it will delete everything! Whereas, if it is just in folder, the pictures stays in the library.
Hi @Glamma V! You are 100% correct! I must have missed that important detail in this particular video!
I do have a whole video dedicated on Smart Albums on your Mac that I do point this important detail out in! I'll link it down below for reference!
