Dutch GP's learn that in 99% of cases the body will heal itself. They are trained to spot the 1% and refer you to the correct second line health care (usually a specialist in a hospital). The specialist will treat you top notch and if you are really, really sick, you must stay there in hospital. And euthenasia is not because of efficiency. It is because of peoples own preference to die with dignity.

I mean, it's how medical care works in general. Medication can only support the body to help itself but in the end it's the body that has to do the healing. The amount of people that treat medicine as some kind of health potion is too damn high. It's a realistic approach to understand the body has to do the hard work, not the medication.

Just because a doctor looks in his computer doesn't mean he/she googles. Before they call you in they already opened your file so they can check your new complaint with what your medical history is, what medicine you are allergic to, things like that.
Glad you agree not taking medicine when you don't really need it.

It's true that you usually don't get any prescriptions when you have a cold or the flu unless you have some serious underlying conditions or are very old and those illnesses can get very serious. Most people here know that you shouldn't bother going to the doctor for these things and just tough it out for a few weeks. There are even GP's that ask you not to take paracetamol (and definitely no ibuprofen) when you have a fever because they believe that you need the bodies natural reaction of inflammation to have the best recovery.

Many foreigners don't understand what the GP's job is. It's not to give you something and hope for the placebo effect, his primary job is diagnosis. That's a difficult, complicated job and he has help from a medical database and tool. My doctor telling me he doesn't know or has doubt and researching things instills confidence in me. Time, how the symptoms develop, is an important diagnostical 'tool'. When my doctor tells me to take a pain killer, he also tells me which one is best for this or that it doesn't matter, he also tells me what symptoms to pay attention to and for how long.
He also has a responsibility for general population health. This means that he of course will warn health authorities in case of a tuberculosis outbreak or something, but also has a responsibility not to prescribe antibiotics if it isn't necessary because it will weaken the drug's effect for the future for everybody if doctors do. He also has a responsibilty to not have patients waste the time of medical specialists. Also for that his first diagnosis is important.

Here we believe that the body is strong enough to fight (a simple) disease. Rest and let you body and immune system do what it's there for. Pills only if needed. I think that's the best they can do! I'm glad my doctor is dressed in jeans and not like a clinical doctor. Makes me relax more. I've had a complementary doctor for years (homeopathy and regular) for me that was the best! A holistic view. Love this videos showing differences between Americans and Dutch people 😊

Yes! No need for medicine for a lot of things. Only when really necessary. Or to fight the symptoms, but you can use a lot of natural products for it. Like a sore throat. Drink some Camilla tea with honey. Also like in the USA, they give antibiotics for everything even if you bump your little toe. Which will make more and more bacteria resistent against antibiotics so in the future they won't work anymore (already happening with some things). That's why they only give it when it is really necessary here in The Netherlands, when it doesn't get better, prevent it from spreading etc..

This is exactly how it goes down. I broke my coccyx/tailbone one year ago. Went to the huisarts (general practitioner) and she pushed on it, and said: *”Yeah I think it’s broken for sure, but you can go home. We’ll do an x-ray in three days as long as your body keeps working. We can’t do anything about a broken tailbone anyways. But if you become paralysed or incontinent, just call us and we’ll do the X-ray immediately. By the way, what do you want for the pain? Oxycodon, morphine or tramadol+diclofenac?”*
But antibiotics??? I had pneumonia two times and they didn’t give me antibiotics. *”You are young and healthy, it will heal naturally, but I’ll give you prednison (corticosteroid version). Come back if you cough a lot of blood, your fever stays high or when your heart rhythm changes.”*

    Ok so this was probably already mentioned, but here’s my stance on it;
1 what do you expect if you have a viral infection such as the flue or a cold? We can’t cure viruses yet so penicillin or antibiotics won’t help. Rest, some warm soup and tea will and yes ibuprofen or paracetamol or aspirin will help with the fever and muscle aches.
2 like highly said, we’re creating hypochondriacs and bodies that are immune to antibiotics with the amount and frequency it’s prescribed sometimes.
3 the shingles example is just a horrible GP. Get a new doctor. And you’ll have horrible doctors everywhere.
It’s a difficult subject but honestly I like the way we do it here. The US system being geared towards prevention I don’t agree with. Why get annual check up if you feel fine and pay money for a doctors visit? I think the US system is more focused on making a profit, more then any other country in the world.

My doctor has never limited my time with a consultation and if I have severe pain for something like my back I'll say ibuprofen isn't working for me and I'll get something stronger for 10 days. I once went to the GP saying I have pains in my chest and it's heartburn he wouldn't hear of it he was so concerned same day I got full heart check at the hospital. Had 4 different tests done didn't cost me anything. Was later.told my heart is in good shape, I said told you heartburn. Point of my story I have absolutely no complaints the system works perfectly and I've lived in other countries and been to doctors.

In the US a doctor is far more likely to give antibiotics against a cold than anywhere else, because the patient is asking for it.
In the Netherlands the doctor knows it doesn't help. He/she will tell you to start eating oranges in november to get better faster when you catch it. It contains loads of technical details, like drug interactions, what dosages to prescribe fitting the illment, ALL possible side effects, when not to use certain medication etc. The paper version is huge and you need the Hubble telescope to read it, because of how tiny the font size is.
Second of all, there is a huge difference between the doctor or “huisarts” or the medical assistant. That is why they try to do a first shifting by phone. How urgent is the case? Is the doctor required or could the medical assistent deal with it.

Its true that they dress in their ‘normal’ clothes. Makes it less ‘hospital’ i guess. I dont mind it haha.
Also yes, it does take like 5-10 min. and they want to make it as quick as possible but also because they are super busy and have a lot of people to see. Thats one thing i don’t really like about it. But it’s all because there is such a pressure on the healthcare for a long time that they can’t really take like 15-20 min for every person.
If you really have symptoms and the doctor thinks its only curable with meds they will prescribe some, but they’re deffinetly not as quick with prescriptions as in America. I feel like they give you meds for everything.
Also sometimes i feel like they want to say that everything is fine and you have to wait for sometime. If you do feel like something is not okay, and for example you want to be seen in the hospital you mostly have to ask for it and then they will do it. But yes, they will try to fix whatever is going on first by itsself or if needed with meds.
And yes, its true that for ‘non emergency’s’ you have to visit you doctor first. If its during the day. At evening/night you can call the dokterswacht aka doctor on duty and they’ll see if you can go to urgent care.
Like if you’re leg is broken and its obvious you can go to the emergency room. But only after you called/made an appointment with the doctor on duty who will tell you if you are allowed to go, which in that case would be. Most of the time they can see you very quickly. Or you can call an ambulance for real emergencies.
I ones fell at work and had an ‘egg’ sized bruised hand. Hurted really bad, couldnt move much. I still needed to visit the doctor first to see if it was nessesary to go to the emergency room for pictures, like whut?💁‍♀️ i think thats so weird, and costs a lot of time.
But all in all, i think we as dutchies can’t complain. I mean yes its not cheap, but it’s deffinitly much more cheaper then healthcare in America😅
Every citizen in the Netherlands is required to have a health insurance.
Monthly you pay around €130-€180 for health insurance. Next to that everyone has an ‘own risk’ thats around €360 a year. So for example, you had a car accident and was brought to the hospital with the ambulance, got fully screened and checked out, you only pay your own risk. Some people higher their own risk to have a lower montly cost. But i just keep it at €360.
I think thats a good system. In America i was thankfull that the company i was with had a great health insurance for me, because i ones got in an accident over there and was brought to hospital with ambulance and got scans etc. Well i almost got a heart attack when i saw those health insurance bills. I shit you not, like several bills that were in total more then like $30.000. Like omg! So yeah i think we really cant complain to much haha

One experience that I had with a house doctor: I had fallen off my bike really hard and fell with a hand straight down, so all the shock went through my wrist.
Pain, pain, pain, so I went to the house doctor.
There he was sitting behind his desk, he heard my story and then je casually crossed his arms and said: "Yes, it is strange what the human mind can do: you fell on your wrist so your mind THINKS that that must hurt!"
I got up, said goodbye to him and we made an appointment straight at the girst aid in the hospital. (Somehow back then that was possible; I was still a kid back then.)
A far less nice story about that same doctor: an elderly lady from Iraq complained of extreme headache. She felt it so clear that something was terribly wrong.
The doctor sent her back home to take some paracetamol. Her two sons went to that house doctor and BEGGED him to take a better look at her, because something was REALLY wrong with her!
The doctor refused to look at her and the same evening she died.
Her sons right away looked for a house in another town, saying: "If we would ever see that house doctor walking in the streets, we would MURDER him and we just don't want to go to jail, so we must move to another town to prevent ever seeing him somewhere in the streets of this small town."

And about the doctor's clothing; funny, I never thought about it. but in m childhood doctors always wore 3-parts suits: trousers, shirt and a suit jacket that belonged to the trousers.
Now they usually wear high class casual clothing, but I really never noticed that transition until I saw this video!
About the gynaecologist eating a sandwich: I worked in a hospital a while ago as an IT guy.
I needed to go to the morgue to fix a computer there.
"Would you like some strawberry lemonade?", the guy there asked.
Thinking of blood of those corpses, I kindly refused! :P
Wait till you're sick: not always, some house doctors do prefer if you come at least once a year, but in general it is correct.

Opioid addiction in the Netherlands...next to nothing. Our bodies can do a whole lot by itself and i know Americans get antibiotics for viral infections alot, wich doesnt do anything since its viral. Same goes for alot of meds. By the time they would work, you are already getting better on your own. No need to put unnecessarily stuff in your body that wil weaken your imune system and/or create a tolerance for something that wont work when you realy realy need it. If you actualy need something (realy realy) you will get it. Otherwise, just let your body rest en handle it.

Considering the fact that in the USA a lot of people get hooked on painkillers after a simple surgical procedure or a dental treatment, paracetamol is just not a bad idea.
Also: virusses can't be treated with medication. They can only be prevented with vaccination if available.
When you call the huisarts for a visit, they will ask you what is wrong, so that the huisarts is prepared when you actually attend at the visit. It's called efficiency, He or she will watch the computer to check your medical history, the medication that you are using and wat will be the best decision to make. In case you will need to take a new medicin, your prescribtion will be checked at the farmacy for safety reasons.

In the Netherlands you call in stick and stay home untill you are better without any problems with the boss. So why would you take antibiotics/medicine that would not work

Having a general doctor as first line has several advantages. This person knows you well which helps with diagnosis, trust between patient and doctor, she knows who the best specialists are and it is more efficient and cheaper. Most childhood diseases do not need specialized care and the family doctor is welk qualified to deal with those and trained to determine specialized care is necessary. The pediatrician (who is far more expensive) will deal with issues that need this specialized care but also does not have to perform the routine checks. The general doctor has also an overview of your health issues.

@@rowanthomas9181 Also most Dutch know that recovering from a severe cold without medication takes 2 weeks and with medication 14 days. We use some paracetamol, nose drops, chickensoup and other home remedies (I don't know the english words for these remedies) to feel more comfortable, but we know that "cold-medications" do not speed up recovery. We also know that antibiotics do not work on a cold. They are only usëful if you get a secondary bacterial infection.
Going to a doctor for a basic cold is a waste of money and time.8 It makes only sense if you get symptoms out of the ordinary like a sudden increase to a high fever, getting really short of breath or no recovery at all after 2 weeks.

Really nice to see these peeps who want someting to supress their illness and go on their normal bussiness. This is not how it works here in The Netherlands. If you are not feelling well, stay at home. If you are in pain, take a paracetamol (which you can buy almost everywhere) and take it easy (get some rest!). If you really think you need help, call your doctor. If you think you're gonna die, dail 112.

5:00 Can the average USA person afford annual checkups? I think the Dutch system is more preventing due to its healthcare. I hear a lot of people in the USA are not going to the doctor until their illness or injury is really preventing them to work/live normally. In the Netherlands people go to the doctor sooner as it is free. Because of this serious issues are diagnosed sooner (on average) and is fixed sooner and by that often cheaper.

Nobody is using Google for this.
They search a medical database containing your personal information with medical history and medicine use and insurance.
Not all insurance companies pay for brand medicine and require you to take non branded products.
Also it contains the latest information on newer medicine or treatments for certain things.
It's very specific for your case. You should consider the computer as a 2nd doctor and 2nd opinion to support your doctor.
You wouldn't want to use a type of medicine that interacts with other stuff you already use.
A doctor doesn't know everything and consulting the database is the best thing they can do.
It also saves you a lot of money because everyone has to pay for the first 350 to 500 euro each year (eigen bijdrage or own contribution).
If they give you medicine that's the most expensive you'll run up that bill quickly leaving you with a high bill to pay to the insurance company at the end of the year.
Also the 10 minute rule is normal.
Each consult by default is ten minutes.
That's the time the insurance company allows the doctor to spend on a patient with normal health issues non life threatening and all that.
That also gives the doctor time for other patients and run a tight schedule.
Our Healthcare system is under huge strain and costs and a doctor doesn't get paid for overtime.
Our system is efficient and cost effective.
    We don't bullshit around..
People with the flu are babies.. there is nothing to treat. There is no treatment for the flu.
The only thing that works well is rest and tea .
All the medicine for flu are fake. They don't work and that has been scientifically proven.
Paracetamol is anti infection and painkiller to give some relief. Whatever and whoever claims that there are medicine for the cold or flu is a liar and charlatan.
You need fluids and lot of it. Drink lot of water and green tea and take paracetamol.
All other stuff is a placebo.
We don't like big pharma here.

I understand that in the US and many other countries people expect to get a medicine prescribed. Even an antibiotic for influenza, which doesn't do anything at all because influenza is a virus and not bacterial. Dutch doctors are very reluctant when it comes to prescribing antibiotics because more and more bacteria are becomming resistand and soon we will be running out of antibiotics that will actually be able to kill the most dangerous bacteria that are rampant in hospitals.

the reason why the Dutch doctor starts with paracetamol are the side effect of the drug If paracetamol does not help, you can try an NSAID: for example ibuprofen, naproxen or diclofenac.
These painkillers work well but can cause serious side effects.
Use them as briefly as possible. And always only 1 species at a time.
Discuss it with your doctor first:
if you have a disease of your heart or kidneys
if you are older than 60 years
if you have had an ulcer or stomach bleeding
Doesn't it help enough? Use paracetamol with it.

The holiday one made me laugh. But tbh even though it seems much, they definitely deserve their holidays. GP's are always overworked and working overtime on a daily basis. They also have you covered because you still can make an appointment, just with a different GP.
I'm mostly surprised how they are unsettled by the research the GP does in front of you. It shows they stay up to date, do double checks, check their claims if they are correct etc... It's a good thing! F that performative bs as if they have to know it all! Good for them to focus on helping me, not looking as a know-it-all.
I'd also like to add we have a serious problem in the world with medication specifically antibiotics. In the USA and many other countries they are nearly over the counter drugs for about anything. But here we treat it as a last resort due to the serious issues long term. If you build antibiotics resistance, then you get incredibly ill, *nobody can help you*. It's a serious problem and I reccommend reading into this subject. Antibiotics is also forbidden now in cattle for this exact reason. It is suspected if antibiotics no longer work, the average life expectancy goes down 50 years. There are many people in the Netherlands who never had antibiotics in their lifetime. I had it only once. And after learning this, I'm actually glad they're cautious. Do not, for the love of god, take antibiotics to treat a virus. It's useless.
Here I go adding more going into this video but gosh. Euthanasia is NOT easy to get. (Source; I have a family member that got approval and passed several months ago. It's a lengthy, difficult and tiring process.) It's an exception and you have to prove no positive outcome in life for example a terminal disease that worsens (quickly too, if it goes slow you don't get it either) rapidly and gives an inhumane amount of pain. But there are a lot of people in this country that sincerely struggle to get approval but want to go this route instead of doing it themselves. It's a heartbreaking subject but very real.

in the netherlands the GP is more like a gatekeeper for the real heavy diseases. they know the body most likely heals itself. the inflamatories of the body should take at least 5 days on its own, so if it just started just take paracetemol to numb the pain and deal with it until your body heals it self, you dont want to have a lot of ibuprofane because that is anti inflamatory. but the body needs that inflamatory to heal itself (there is a reason it happens) it only becomes a problem if you still have the symptomes after a week. and most of the time they are then quick to act and get you a specialist within a couple of days, or even the same day.
so the GP is there for the little things the check ups and to be some kind of gatekeeper for the specialist
edit: and they are very carefull with antibiotics and opiates because that shit isn't good for you in the long run. so they only use it if they don't have any other choice. but if you get antibiotics or even opiates you will get to pick it up within an hour or 2 of leaving the GP, cause they will send to your farmacist that you are going to pick it up and it is all 'free'

the reason is because in a lot of countries doctors will hand out antibiotics very easily, when it's not necessary.

  • @henkhessel3651
    @henkhessel3651 Год назад

Common cold and flu are viral infections. There is nothing that really works in those cases so the only thing one can do is ease the 'pain' with some paracetamol which is the least harmful painkiller for most people. Actually there are very few real medicines that do anything more than lessen the symptoms. For instance statins don't prevent a heart attack or make you live a day longer and metformin lowers your blood sugar but does not heal your diabetes and does nothing for your NAFLD. Antibiotics should only be given when all else fails as whole countries are made resistent to them nowadays so when you really need them nothing works anymore and you die. Besides that: they also kill your gut bacteria which can cause metabolic illnesses.
It's a good practice to try let the body do its own healing and leave the pills for serious cases. I know, that is bad for big Pharma shareholdervalue...
Eat real food and not the ultra processed crap from the food industry. Read more? "lies my doctor told me" by Ken D Berry MD etc might be a good start.

1 you do not tell the doctor what you want prescribed. This is not The US.
2 you dont make double appointments, you just stay untill your done? This is evident in the waiting room that is sometimes very packed because everyone got scheduled in the same hour, but some appointments take longer than others.
3 They can and will absolutely see you if you have an emergency that doesnt require a hospital visit, if it does. Go to the hospital👀
4 you get paracetamol because its over the counter, works on most people (they gave me this for migraines, it didnt work and then i got switched to 600mg ibuprofen which do work) its cheap and they dont want you to get addicted to heavy painkillers, just tough it out.
