That was fantastic Skye, and not just because The Beatles, were my childhood gods. Your analysis, was brilliant and spot on for me. Loved all of it. I was 9 years old when they went on the Ed Sullivan Show. It was past my bedtime, and I had never heard of The Beatles, But ,I have a funny story about that. There was a girl my age that lived down the street from me and we would usually walk home together after school, Well the next day after The Beatles were on Sullivan, I was walking home with my friend when I noticed she had a small wooden box in her hand, and I asked her what was in the box. She said "beetles". I said "really, could you show me". She opened the box to reveal a newspaper clipping with a picture of these 4 odd looking guys with long hair hanging down on their foreheads, and said " these are THE BEATLES". That was my introduction to The Beatles. Things have never been the same since.

Excellent review, Professor! And a very worthwhile edit. I haven't seen the doc, but now I'm primed to check it out.

Great video. Have you heard of the Grey Album by Danger Mouse? It's a mashup that mixes an a capella version of Jay-Z's The Black Album with samples from the Beatles White album. You would enjoy it.

My parents were there for Beatlemania, but I became a bigger fan than they ever were. I’ll watch any doc that gives me a taste of that era even if it’s boomer bait. Thanks, Prof. AVAA

Just watched it, and you're right, it was just so ridiculously good. It had no business being that good. If you love The Beatles, it's a joy to watch.

Is it worth watching? Because honestly, the Beatles are the best. The thing is, ive rarely seen the Beatles in black and white interviews. Most of their interviews that zi know of I have read i think.
Hip Hop lovers will enjoy the Beatles if they start with certain songs. Or just expect to hear some old classic music.

I feel that another theme was "do you see how your parents and grandparents treated you cause you liked the beatles? Don't repeat that again"
That's why there's so many scenes of older people in 64 being like "these kids are crazy" and then cut back it's old people from today speaking of how amazing the beatles were
I feel that documentary uses the beatles as a trojan horse to hammer in this critique

I am not a boomer and also have not watched the 'Beatles '64' so agreed, I am speaking 'out of school.' However, I began listening to their music and studying the phenomena in 1978 when I was 13 years old. I have listened to countless interviews, consumed tens of books / countless articles, and listened to various bootlegs recordings. I see this as a case of 'correlation is not causation.'
I don't buy the theory that The Beatles played a significant role in U.S. societal recovery following the JFK assassination. My argument is based on the fact that the assassination was rarely if ever mentioned during band interviews or by individual members after the breakup. Perhaps one could investigate archival 1964 media reports and interviews to determine if any journalist tied Beatlemaina effects on adolescent girls to JFK recovery. How many who watched Ed Sullivan on February 9, 1964 would claim their grief was miraculously cured by The Beatles performance?
I assume this fish-story began with various late 1970s and 1980s documentaries that loosely associated the assassination and societal recovery for dramatic effect. As the The Beatles legend has grown, so have the myths and assertions.
There is more evidence they were participants in civil rights struggles. For example, in 1964 the band refused to perform to a segregated crowd in Jacksonville, Florida. Yet, beyond such actions and when prodded for statements in interviews, their participation in matters of civil rights were limited until John Lennon and Yoko Ono took on activist roles outside of the band circa 1968. Claiming The '1964' Beatles were anything more than occasional-passive participants in civil rights struggles devalues the efforts of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other era civil rights leaders.
When it comes to integrating African American music into mainstream media, one must first give credit to Elvis Presley and other 1950s Caucasian artists who delivered more edgy performances than Pat Boone. I will say that the Beatles contributed to a continued breakdown of societal stigma associated with African American music; yet recall, their long-hair styles served as a great source of elder angst in opposition to the contemporary view that their 1964 image was that of four clean-cut lads. The fact The Beatles played some African American music did not endear them to the elder generations.
In conclusion, the Beatles 64' thesis draws a conclusion that the band had a greater cultural impact simply because U.S. society needed psychiatric help. That unfairly diminishes the culturally significant works of Paul McCartney, George Harrison, John Lennon, Ringo Starr, George Martin, Brian Epstein, and a broader supporting cast of individuals who when combined possessed the talent to change the world.

Modern Beatles drops tend to always be boomer bait but that’s usually not a bad thing bc cmon it’s the Beatles. Like, unless it’s a complete fucking train wreck like the “now and then” video I usually appreciate anything diving into the Beatles.
It’s really only the low effort releases that suck. Those cheesy docs that just cover basic facts and stories everyones heard are trash. Now and then was a boring song in general, I mean not unlistenable but the music video was just cheap and tasteless nostalgia bait. For a long time I hated how they did new mixes for every album but I’ve learned to appreciate that since investing in good headphones. The best releases they’ve done are the anthologies or anniversary editions because all Beatles fans really want is to see what happened in the studio. Let it be doc goes without saying as the best “post-Beatles” release from the band as a whole.

The Maysles footage was released in 1991 as a DVD The First US Visit which is a reality version of A Hard Days Night. Its fantastic.
Unlike the likes of Pat Boone, and their own background of integration they actively promoted black music on their arrival in 1964 and also refused to play segregated audiences
However I do not agree on either of the covers of Yesterday and Blackbird. I love Smokey Robinson but his version of Yesterday is just too much. The originals are best. I've only heard one better version and that Joe Cockers version of With A Little Help From My Friends is better than than tye original

Very interesting talk. As a Canadian boomer though, all that JFK, Civil Rights stuff didn't matter. Capital Canada had started releasing Beatle records early on in 1963 unlike the pinheads at Capital USA. We still had Beatlemania and I like to think that the same thing would have happened in the USA without the death of JFK and the Civil Rights movement.
