What do you mean? I'm an electrician and you definitely don't use these as wire tracers, that's what wire tracers are for. They are designed to check if the wires are live. The only time one isn't working properly is one of two things. The first is you have a meter that you haven't tested and you don't know if it's working. You test it by going to a line you know is hot and seeing if it picks it up, then one you know is dead then back to the hot. Then you know it's working. The other option is if it's with dc (direct current). It can't pick up the change in the wires because it's flowing directly instead of back and forward like alternating current.

Although not an electrician I used something similar when I was younger and learning/working under my father who was a licensed electrician. But if your just doing DIY and periodically need to find a wire behind a wall, a good tone generator is one way of doing it. It wont give the full accuracy of a tracer kit, but it can get you in the ball bark for many DIY, you just want to be careful. I have never had it fail. Where I have had tone generators fail is telling me that a wire was not live when it turned out it was. Nothing like a little 120v (and a couple time 240v) to wake you up in the morning. But all I do is "like for like" and the occasional permitted rewires/modifications under 'owner/builder" with final inspection/hookups done by licensed electricians over the decades.

This is actually a voltage tester or tic.. electricians use this to test potentially hot wires.. hope this was helpful
