One of my favorite movie scores I remembered before the Star Wars and Jaws and Superman movie Soundtracks and all the other more well known movie scores. I could tell the scenes just by the music of the movie
"The Vikings" was a successful 1958 production, featuring Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis in leading roles. The musical score was provided by the italian composer Mario Nascimbene. A re-recording of the splendid score exists, but as usual we feature the original recordings. Unfortunately, they seem to have survived only in such minor sound quality as you can hear, but which I hope you will enjoy, anyway, as the music itself is of high quality!
This was one of my fave films and music scores, as a kid growing up in the sixties. Kirk and Tony also teamed in Spartacus, another childhood feast of picture and sound. Loved Nascimbene's score, almost as much as Alex North's Spartacus. Listening now to the incidental music when Kirk and his men are playing their macho long boat oar dance-feat. "ODIN!" Ernest Borgnine.
Watched it again last night to honor the late Kirk Douglas. Back in 1990 I was privileged to work on some recordings in Maestro Nascimbene's home studio, while he tended his tomatoes out back!
This was one of my father's favorite motion picture score and he didn't care that much for film music. This also is one of my favorites by the great Nascimbene that I've played so many times I've lost count. Thanks Fred for a great upload. Out.
Great music. Great movie. Great book too. Edison Marshal. Get it. Read it. My copy is not annotated. I didn't know half of what I was reading until I started pulling out maps and dictionaries. Way before the internet. Excellent story. I don't know why this name doesn't sound familiar to me. Mario Nascimbene. Excellent.
Thanx for this score. It was was the first soundtrack LP I ever bought when I was at school as a bargain bin sale. I didn't get to see the movie until it came out on DVD about 15 years ago.
I'm so happy you could get around to this one before the passing of the late, great Kirk Douglass. 'The Vikings' is one of my favorite movies has one of my favorite scores. Thank you so much good Sir!
Thank you so very much, for this kind words! Douglas was one of the very greatest. I am sure that he had a very fulfilling and deserved life. Best to you! Fred
Once, in a tv interview, Kirk Douglas was asked in which movie he had the most fun. A smile appeared on his face. He quickly replied "The Vikings." As a boy and ever since, I have fun each time I watch it. May we all be worthy to join him and the other cast members in Valhalla.
Narrator: The Vikings, in Europe of the 8th and 9th century, were dedicated to a pagan god of war, Odin. Trapped by the confines of their barren ice-bound northlands, they exploited their skill as shipbuilders to spread a reign of terror, then unequaled in violence and brutality in all the records of history. Narrator: The greatest wish of every Viking was to die, sword in hand, and enter Valhalla, where a hero's welcome awaited them from the god Odin. Narrator: When the Vikings set forth to rob and plunder England, they never sailed out of sight of land. They confined their attacks to swift, overnight raids. It was not an accident that the English Book of Prayer contained this sentence: "Protect us, oh Lord, from the wrath of the Northmen."
Soundtrack Fred, is it at all possible for you to edit and upload suites from the soundtracks to Sinbad the Sailor (1947) by Roy Webb, or The Crimson Pirate (1952) by WIlliam Alwyn? Those scores have never been released on their own albums, and that's such a shame because they are beautiful scores. Do you have the editing software to rip the music directly from the DVDs and separate them from the dialogue/sound fx? These scores need more recognition, and that would be awesome.
Hello Luke, for Sinbad there is is a 5 min. suite available with the original recordings, released by Cloud Nine Records. But you are after the entire scores. I am sorry but I have no programs and foremost the know-how for edit audio files like that. Some peoples do it, but there are always sfx left in such recordings. The technological possibilities went far, but, in this case, it is not magic... yet. :-) But maybe you find somebody who is very into that craft and can do this project without problems. Best to you! Fred
IMHO Ernie Borgnine steals the show. His magnum opus! Not blustery, just elegance. A Viking king with wisdom. Who would find wisdom in a ‘barbarian’? Damn this nasty corona virus! But for that I would book a trip to Norway, see the fjords. Minnesota is flat as a billiard table. To see the fjords would make my life complete. Not today. Maybe someday when the virus is conquered. Until then the music will suffice. Take my eyes, my teeth, other things ,leave my ears. I will be a happy old fart! (I’m 66yo). Only music connects nervous systems. Not my quote.
I love this film . So did my mum and dad . Even though we are Celts not Vikings . They repeate it often on National television . So I watch it . The movie gives the WOKE gang something to worry about .
This is fantastic music but the films idea of historical accuracy is so bad it is good. We see stone castles besieged by multifarious hordes of Northmen who could not have been transported in so few ships. The castles cannot have been built in the time of the Vikings and are as anachronistic as the English ships which encounter the longboats. Was Wales as important a territory to the Anglo Saxon rulers at this time and did anyone need maps to be drawn to sail there? The monks habit is not from the right period at all or the stained glass in the chapel. Just where did the huge horn which heralds the returning Vikings come from.? Are these anomalies also present in the book from which this film is derived? I am astonished that this film has stood the test of time because its period sense certainly never did.
Remember the whole family sitting together watching this film on a Sunday afternoon. Miss those times.
Yes me too....earliest memories ❤️
Indeed...❣️❣️❣️
Yeah, the good old times, christian times, when people were humans and not reptilians like now.
We just watched it tonight - much better than years ago due to the superior tv
Saw this as a child at the theater with my brother. No adults along. That was a time when kids could go by themselves. Loved this film.
One of my favorite movie scores I remembered before the Star Wars and Jaws and Superman movie Soundtracks and all the other more well known movie scores. I could tell the scenes just by the music of the movie
I LOVED this movie as a kid, and this wonderful music was one of the reasons why. Kudos.

Kirk Douglas is legendary.
What a feast for my soul😍💕
I’ve watched this movie many times as a child and many more times since then❣️
Thank you😘
Absolutely befitting score, that really helped heightened the already supreme quality of a brilliant film.
Einar: Tell me, did my mother fight you?
Ragnar: Did she fight me? I have the scars of her scratches and bites all over me. What a woman!
She said she’d kill herself if I touched her?! What they really mean is they’d kill themselves if you don’t 🤣
I enjoyed this film, I remember watching it with my Nan, thanks for the upload Fred.
Just love the slow funeral and end titles. Wonderful sound track all the way through. Thank you for down loading this gem
I loved watching this movie with my mom and dad. The theme music still stays in my heart .
Yes! I've never forgotten the beautiful music! So powerful and touching

Mario Nascimbene was one of the most important Italian soundtrack composers.
RIP kirk douglas, tony curtis, janet leigh. they dont make them like that anymore.
Ernest Borgnine
Superb film and an amazing soundtrack one of my all-time favourite film scores.
I love epic movies like the Vikings, the Robe, Ben Hur. The music is awesome and the acting in such movies is superb.
Yes it's unfortunate they don't make them anymore.
Along with the incredible music I also adore the art for these old film covers, they don't make' em like they used to!

This has been in my mind since I first saw the movie!
When I die someday, by the Gods, I want this theme played loud and clear at the funeral. I want God to know a Viking is coming!
Don't forget Janet Leigh. I was 10 when I saw the movie and I certainly didn't forget her.
Kam irgendwann in den 70ern mal in der ARD und war für mich als Kind total faszinierend. Auch wenn er historisch natürlich weitgehend Nonsens ist.
The under rated film of all time, so sad It's one of my favourites
Also part of my collection
S22022020. Descanse en Paz Gran Actor Kirk Douglas.
It's this and the Tom Thumb score for me.
Like to visit the castle at the end of the film France I believe 😜
