Never thought I'd ever be one to say they don't make them like this anymore but they really don't,a true classic in every sense of the word!👌 RIP Kirk Douglas you was class!
One of the best movies ever, at least in my opinion. Maybe also interesting to you the interview with Kirk Douglas as the Producer of this blockbuster; on RUclips: Kirk Douglas talkes THE VIKINGS in a rare 1958 interview; put on the Net by Eyes On Cinema- personaly I thought it very interesting because this one was not jaded by memory but came straight up from the mind. Also interesting that the only area where the movie got bad reviews were the Scandinavian nations The peoiple there felt rather insulted by the Intro.
Thanks, and just as aqnother fact. THIS movie still is KULT ! Think at all those nvoells it has influenced like Harry HARRISON: TIMETRAVEL IN TECHNICOLOR; about a Hollywood movie crew traverling back in time to the Vicings; or the FUNERAL SCENE from DRAGON AGE ORIGINS. In the computergame they clearly had used the final movie scene as an inspiration. I even think the commen misconcept about a typical Viking Funeral on a burning boat comes from the movie. In fact the true early Scandinavieans had digged in the deceased together with a boat of even a ship, depending how rich the guy had been. By the way, wish you Merry Christmas ( or anything else you like ) and a happy New Year from Germany
A true classic. It was the first movie that broke with the cliché of the Vikings being portrayed as wearing horned helmets. Kirk Douglas threw all the money he had into this venture. I first saw it when I was a lad of 13, and to this day, it is one of the movies that I love most. Who can forget the "walking on the oars" scene? The cry of Einar "Morganaaa...", when she is taken away by Eric to England. Or Ragnar, crying "ODIIIN!" as he jumps into the pit of wolves, sword in hand so he can enter Valhalla. And then is the opening narration by Orson Welles, totally priceless. And then is the magnificent score by Mario Nascimbene, who should have won an Oscar.
Every time I see this ending it is hard not to get emotional. I saw this movie in 1968 as a 7 year old. It is one of my favorite movies ever. Norway is so Beautiful, and of course Scandinavian girls are some of the best looking girls in the world.
Saw the movie at Gaumont Cinema 1959 The Nags Head, Holloway road, North London with my dad,and brother, met Tony Curtis at Harrods book signing eleven years ago, I said to him "why did he hesitate" not in my North London Cockney accent but in his Tony Curtis Bronx accent, we had a good laugh about it, his a very funny man indeed. Great picture
Aún en la actualidad sigue estando entre las grandes películas sobre Vikingos, con estrellas como Kirk Douglas,Tony Curtis,Janeth Leigh, Ernest Bornine y un villano de excepción como Frank Thring .
saw the movie as a child , influenced me the rest of my life in being ambitious , wasn't till late that I found out that part of my heritage is 6% Viking , built my first boat "right-side up" like the Vikings (not upside-down like everybody else) ... one of my favorite parts of the movie is when they put the maiden on the testing board for unfaithful wives !!! ... even my daughter can throw an axe like Einar in the movie !!!
I am doubting Kirk's credentials regarding Spartacus because I AM Spartacus which is confusing as 2 of my friends also say they are.....:) R.I.P. Kirk.
Thanks but.... Where is Ernie Borgnine jumping into the hungry wolf/dog pit !!!!!! You don’t have to see them, just the growling... now they’d have to show them, ruining the mental visualization
@@johnfellows2867 Did she? Thanks for the info. I'll look up an obituary....Maybe the film's little children (like the toddler in the fur diaper) are the only ones left, now.

Narrator: The Vikings, in Europe of the 8th and 9th century, were dedicated to a pagan god of war, Odin. Trapped by the confines of their barren ice-bound northlands, they exploited their skill as shipbuilders to spread a reign of terror, then unequaled in violence and brutality in all the records of history. Narrator: The greatest wish of every Viking was to die, sword in hand, and enter Valhalla, where a hero's welcome awaited them from the god Odin. Narrator: When the Vikings set forth to rob and plunder England, they never sailed out of sight of land. They confined their attacks to swift, overnight raids. It was not an accident that the English Book of Prayer contained this sentence: "Protect us, oh Lord, from the wrath of the Northmen."
True story for you all, my late brother was driving through Marble Arch London years ago, with his two boys in the back of his Jeep, Lo and behold who walks behind them crossing the road but The Witch they both yelled out "Odin Odin" she was totally shocked by it, the look on her face was priceless, I first saw the movie in 59 with my dad and brother, so his two boys were brought up watching The Vikings and new most of the dialog, "why did he hesitate" etc. etc lol The Witch also appeared in the TV series "upstairs downstairs" a few nights ago the UK, which was made back in 71, she played a Spirit medium, wonder why the casting director picked her ? he must of scene The Vikings, lol
Actually he’s based off of Ragnar’s second son, Ivar he had with the Princess Aslaug. The saga is quite interesting. The film is based off the sagas and a book now out of print “The Viking” by Edison Marshall.
They don't make films like this anymore. I first watched this film in 1972 when I was 10. It just popped up one Thursday evening when I was reading one of Henry Treece's trilogy of the Viking, Harald Sigurdsson. I just could not believe my luck. The film has stuck with me ever since as the books have. Now I can see the ridiculuous Hollywoodisation of the story as the brave, noble Vikings are the Americans and the weak, effete English are the latter day British. If only life were that simple. We now know that the Vikings were anything but blood thirsty savages. They were a trading people, who unfortunately did trade in slaves, but they had a rich and varied culture.
The Anglo Saxons (or English) were the precursors to the Vikings and closely related, coming from Denmark, Frisia and North Eastern Germany. The effete weak myth is just that,..a myth! 300 hundred years earlier they had conquered the Romano Celtic tribes who lived in what we now call England. Also research King Alfed the Great and his descendants especially Aethelstan.
I am doubting Kirk's credentials regarding Spartacus because I AM Spartacus which is confusing as 2 of my friends also say they are.....:) R.I.P. Kirk.

Bruh the funeral scene at the end is super sad tho 😭😭😭😭💀
I cried to death
Ernest Borgnine grew that beard for the film. And he was actually 1 year younger than Kirk but is so believable as his father!

The Long Ships was another great Viking movie 🎥 and least Richard Widmark was of Viking descent
RIP Kirk Douglas a true great of Hollywood and a true gentleman.
The VIKINGS
Why the heck does the funeral scene make me cry.
Beautiful! One of my favorite soundtrack. One of my favorite films.
One of the best Viking movie. Viking is Viking wherever is.
The end made me cry to death
I've heard they actually filmed half of this movie in Norway - for some reason you never think of them doing that in the 50s
True... ...so many films in the 'Hollywood Studio' era were somewhat ruined by cheap studio back-projection images!
Legendary!
Hey Kirk And Tony Fight Scene The Greatest Of All Times Legendary 💗🙏

My mistake I saw this movie in 1958 when I was 7 years old. Above would have made me 10 years younger. I wish.
❤😮 My gran said she went to see this at the age of 12 in 1958.
The greatest ever funeral bar none
Bruh it made me cry to death tho 😭😭💀💀💀😭💀💀
The Vikings a great nation brilliant ship builders[ some great actors in this film ]

Kirk got the Glory and Fame but Ernie jumped into the snarling wolf pit and endeared himself to millions of young boys yearning to be MEN!
that's right ...never running away from a fight but , running toward it and accepting the consequences !!!
4:42 herd of goats runs excitedly to meet returning Vikings.

Valhalla- Kirk Douglas sailing our ship!!!!! Glasgow Forever!!!!
I good lord KIRK
Très beau film !!...
Kirk Douglas actually did run on those oars...
Oden!!!
Einar's the most handsome prince I've seen.
The most beautiful princess is probably Keeli, a puppet with red-gold hair, in one episode of Star Fleet.
the fascinating film...
O i miss Kurt are any men going to be as good in future????
I wonder if the nearly-lucky damsel on Einar's bed (in his first scene) is still alive? And if so, what does she look like now?
Yes she is. German girl but I cant remember her name!
Almut Berg.
Yes would be interesting.. good thing Kirk never split her wide oven with the axes,
She passed in 2022.

Eileen Way...That's who played Kitella...
Ragnar Lothbrok is Ernest Borgnine. Why did they name Kirk Douglas Einar instead of Bjorn?
Because it's not taken from a saga - it's a story written by writers set in the Viking Period.
Actually he’s based off of Ragnar’s second son, Ivar he had with the Princess Aslaug. The saga is quite interesting. The film is based off the sagas and a book now out of print “The Viking” by Edison Marshall.
before vinland saga vikings and the northman there was 1958 the vikings
Meny vortes is the same . come too Danmark . Wee have no opper lifs ,
The viking funeral always reminds me of Rab C Nesbit giving a similar funeral to his hamster.
Kirk storming the drawbridge should be here!
@Andromeda strain my favourite bit is when the drawbridge comes down and the battle cry which is all Kirk!
