I don’t think the penalties are too tough. While it is a physical game, it’s meant to be professional. However, there was one last week where a player shoved a member of the medical staff that was coming out to attend an injured player. That absolutely needs a huge fine and suspension.
First, if you throw a punch in the NFL against a player or an official, you're gone. 9 times out of ten is going to be an ejection. As for one of the most memorable fights with my team... it's a bit of a tie for me as an Eagles fan. Probably the most vivid I can remember was when Chris Baker for the Commanders hit Nick Foles well after the ball was thrown and took him down from behind nowhere near where the ball was at with a cheap shot. It not only injured foles, Jason Peters went after him and it sparked a fight between both teams. It ended with both Peters and Baker being ejected from the game for fighting, but the one who ended up getting all the scorn (and rightly so) was Baker for the absolute cheap shot he laid onto Nick Foles. The second was when Deshazier Everrett (again of the Commanders) deliberately lowered the crown of his helmet and speared a defenseless receiver in Darren Sproles during a kick return. Not only was the hit absolutely brutal, it was purposeful. It sparked a HUGE brawl between both teams to the point the officials had to direct both teams to their benches under threat of penalty.
The fines and suspensions help keep players in check and prevent the outbursts. Because it's such a physical game, fights would be constant if there weren't significant penalties. Conversely, because it's a physical game you only have to play to dish out fully legal punishment on your opponent. A punch won't shut somebody up as fast as a touchdown
If I may sound like an old curmudgeon, which I am, these are mostly lightweight scuffles..in the 70s the work on the line was much rougher than any of these dustups and the occasional brawl was pretty damned savage..
The fight between Mason Rudolph and Myles Garrett had said Mason Rudolph had used racist remarks during the fight but there was no proof any words being said.
I remember watching that Titans/Texans game. If I remember right, there were two fights that game, this was the second. There has always been tension between these two teams since the Houston Oilers moved to Tennessee and became the Titans. There is no love for Tennessee in Houston (which makes this Houston-living Tennessee fan have to stay in the closet). Finnigan was definitely not the nicest player, but I still rock the 31 jersey every Sunday.
Dang it. I'm late again. But I have to defend my guy. Andre Johnson is the calmest, most soft-spoken guy who ever played football. Cortland 'innegan (no F after Andre beat the eff out of him) was an ass. Had beef with everybody. He pushed Andre throughout the game, until it was time. You take wins and losses, but you don't take disrespect and Andre finally got fed up. Best money he ever spent!
Funny thing about that Steelers/Browns scuffle with Joey, since Joey was ejected, that game would be James Harrison’s first start. He played so well he featured more in the rotation and when Joey left well, the rest is history.
The way I understand it is that penalties for altercations are just as much about preventing what could happen next as they are for the altercations themselves.
You are somewhat correct about the open hand versus a fist. An open hand could get you a personal foul penalty. Hitting someone with a fist will usually get you ejected. However, taking a swing at someone with a open hand is considered the same as using a fist and swinging at someone. I am not sure about the NFL, but in college and high school football just taking a swing at someone will get you ejected, even if no contact is made. The NFL runs a program to help former players who have hit upon rough times. The money from fines goes to help fund this program. Also, when a player is suspended his base pay for each game of his suspension is forfeited. Base pay can be VERY different from the multi-million dollar contracts some players have. Usually, much of that money is deferred and is not part of his base pay for the season at hand. Their are 17 games in an NFL season. If you're suspended for one game, you forfeit 1/17th of your base pay.
One of the biggest complaints I have as an American sports fan is that the leagues themselves are far too concerned with making it completely safe for children to watch, which shouldn't be the concern since the children aren't the ones paying to go to games or paying to watch the game on TV
Almost every single example of these players are hot heads. Michael Crabtree, Josh Norman, and Aquib Talib are prime examples. I'm sure Courtland Finnegan was an AH in his playing days.
Check out the Bounty Gate scandal!!!! It's about New Orleans Saints coaches rewarding players for knocking out and purposefully injuring opposing teams' star players.
I'm generally Ok with ejections and/or suspensions. Sometimes the penalties don't match the infractions, but the money doesn't mean much compared to what many of these players make. Without meaningful consequences, these types of actions would be even more common.
As an Oiler fan I remember the coach fight and to boil it down Buddy Ryan has a temper lol I’m sure there is more to it but as I was only 14ish at the time I don’t remember
If at the end of this video you cant see why these players have to be controlled, you need to watch it again. These football games could turn into riots without the authority of penalties, ejections, suspensions and fines. Just imagine if the stands were to empty.
May I add that last fight what fueled the fire even more is the Tennessee Titans use to be the Houston Oilers so whenever the Texans play them there is more a heated undertone to the game
The game isn't getting soft. Fighting isn't a part of football and these guys weren't going to calm down. They needed to be tossed. The Browns player who hit the Steelers QB on the head with his helmet could have done serious damage. Those helmets are heavy.
The game is softer than when I played it in the late 80's and 90's but back then there were still ejections and suspensions. It's controlled chaos, and there has to be some ultimate form of punishment to keep control otherwise it would be deadly.
Exactly. Also: throwing a punch in a game where sportsmanship is literally part and parcel with the rules... big no-no. I agree it's softer than it used it be, but not necessarily without reason; I think the injuries such as what happened to Ryan Shazier are the last thing anyone wants to see happen on the field.
We cant let them fight and have fun little scuffles because they are 250 lbs of muscle and if a wayward punch goes wrong then someone dies on the field. We can do it in hockey because once the gear pops off the refs usually break it up and the players let them.
Yes, American Football is a game of slams and bams, but not ejecting them for brawling and fist fighting like drunks in the street would have its own consequences. They will constantly make illegal hits and break rules because "nothing will happen". And how the hell is a brawl due to someone losing thier temper sportsmanship? It isn't. And kids are watching this and if temperamental players are never ejected it will teach the kids watching that a fist-fight solves everyones problems. No. It doesn't work that way, there has to be consequences for unsportsmanlike behavior, especially in the US, where we tend to be violent already and looking the other way can be deadly. (edit) You asked later if the penalties were too severe. No, I think they are way too soft, maybe if these hot-heads were ejected more often and for longer periods, both they and thier coaches would do better to keep this sort of thing from happening. I know that most players are just fine and aren't losing thier tempers etc beyond an f-bomb or two, but the ones who continue to escalate already heated situations need to be provided with anger management therapy.
only had 1 fite in 8yrs of playing ... had sacked the qb 2x in a row which irked the opposing tackle so on next play he grabbed my facemask and drug me to the ground, level headed me decided to tackle him and stomped on his back a few times, got a $100 fine (almost 2 weeks pay for a semi-pro) and released from the team the next week ...
We loved going to Canada when youger to play in hockey tournaments. I'm from Michigan. You are allowed to fight and not get kicked out of the game. Well, if it's really bad, I've never personally seen in while on the ice in Canada.
If you like fights check out " MALICE IN THE PALACE" DETROIT PISTONS VS INDIANA PACERS You won't be disappointed Also #2 FIGHT NIGHT DETROIT RED WINGS VS COLORADO AVALANCHE Hockey fight with goalie VS goalie
Not to bright former school teacher, players get ejected because its bad sportsmanship. Kids are watching and they will copy the Pros, and most importantly, someone could get seriously hurt. I can tell you have never been a fight former school teacher
I think ejections and suspensions are reasonable, those fights can get out of hand. Oh and don't get me started on Hockey, I heard somewhere where fights are allowed in that sport; correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Canada fight the Soviet team in a hockey brawl once?
Thank you!!! Omg please do more sports🥹 you’ve been going away from them too much buddy!!! Still love your channel and get pumped when a sports video is posted!!
You really can't let these guys just fight like they do in hockey. Those two sports don't have the same culture around fighting. I've seen hockey players fight until they don't feel like fighting anymore and then hug it out. That's not how any fight would ever end in the NFL lol
The penalties are too light in my opinion. The fines are too low and the suspensions are too short. When players begin losing their careers and large sums of money, they will finally get the hint.
I guess monetary fines don't mean that much when you make a lot of money but I hate to see players ejected from games. I'd be kind of pissed off if I went to a game to see my favorite player and they got ejected.
If popular history is to be believed, and I can't say because I wasn't around to verify it, the sport that rugby/soccer(futbol)/football is based on was an ancient Mezoamerican sport played by the Aztecs or Mayans; I don't recall which. The crux of that older game was that the losers were sacrificed to the gods, as in taken to the tops of the temples, had their hearts gouged out and their blood drank by priests kind of sacrifice. So. . . . based on that, the punishments in football have gotten really soft. Based on logic, they could be a bit more. The reason I say so is because it's they're career choice, meaning they could easily change jobs to be an Amazon warehouse worker in a heartbeat for any inexplicable reason, but also they're on contract. Even if they're suspended, even if they are the MVP, even if they tear their ACL and have to sit out for an entire season, they get a flat sum paid to them as per their agreed signed contract. They get extra from branding deals and what not, but the main thing is that they basically have a lifeline as long as they're still contracted to the NFL.
I think if you want to fight then challenge each other in the ring. You don't need to act like a thug on the field. There should be consequences for this behavior. Game play hits are part of the game, Not punching, spitting, or hitting someone on the head with your helmet.
No they need to be suspended or it would happen at every game on purpose, because they know there would be no consequences. Their suppose to be Professional

#2 hits home as I'm from Cleveland and a BIG Myles Garrett fan. It's been posited that Mason Rudolph made it extremely racial and called Myles a slur. That's the only way that I can see Myles getting that aggressive. That's on top of the huge historical rivalry between the Browns and the Steelers. I remember watching this altercation!
I can't help but laugh when I hear that players were fined $5,000.00. These guys have multi-million dollar contracts, so that's not even a slap on the wrist. Quarterbacks have been known to spend that much on dinner & alcohol bar bills for their entire defensive line. The last game I ever watched was the Superbowl match between the Giants and the New England Patriots back in (I think it was) 1991? Anyway, football was never as violent (in my memory) back then as it has become today. Come to think of it, neither were the Hollywood movies.🤔 Peace.🕊

Monetary fines are like parking tickets would be to ordinary people.
Ejections are true punishments.

4:50 targeting can also get you thrown. Lowering your head and ramming another player
You got to watch the highlights of the Norman and Beckham game. That game was crazy
Yes!!! They were going at it all game

4:46 I don’t think he thought that though lol
After that helmet smack nobody should have held Pouncey back. Suspended for defending a team mate. What a joke.
I hated seeing Pouncey get suspended as a steelers fan. It was the kick towards the head that probably did it though
These are the craziest fight "over the last 5 years".
One of the biggest complaints I have as an American sports fan is that the leagues themselves are far too concerned with making it completely safe for children to watch, which shouldn't be the concern since the children aren't the ones paying to go to games or paying to watch the game on TV

To whoever’s reading this comment have a good day
Same to you, bud
Likewise!
Have a great one!
Thank you, I hope you all have good days as well ☺️
Thanks, Fire, right back to ya!
I thought trash talk was just part of athletic competition.

Fines are given to support former players in need.
That’s what they want you to believe
@@DR.SHRIMPPR Yes! You are probably right… we can only go on what the NFL report; unless there is proof otherwise.
If at the end of this video you cant see why these players have to be controlled, you need to watch it again. These football games could turn into riots without the authority of penalties, ejections, suspensions and fines. Just imagine if the stands were to empty.
U also can’t hit out of bounds. That’ll get a big reaction
Punching a helmet seems fairly silly
May I add that last fight what fueled the fire even more is the Tennessee Titans use to be the Houston Oilers so whenever the Texans play them there is more a heated undertone to the game
Yeah the NFL fines go to charities like the Gene Upshaw Player Assistance Trust which helps retired players who need it.
Got into a fight in highschool football... As the other team charged us, we strapped on the helmets.
6:51 Beckham is a hot head😂

Andre Johnson was that mf! That moment is legendary in Houston lol
2:35 Steve Smith had it coming. He was a dirty player
Cortland had to legally change his name to Innigan cause Andre knocked the F out of him.

You should comment on NHL fights, though they are tamer now than when I watched hockey in the 60s and 70s.
"When they fine players, does it go to a charity, or line the pockets of the executives?" -- HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! oh, wait, you were serious?
If officials didn't give out meaningful punishments, the game would be constantly interrupted by fighting on the field.
I don't really want football to become hockey so I am mostly ok with how it is handled.
If you hit with a closed fist I believe you get a broken hand😂
We loved going to Canada when youger to play in hockey tournaments. I'm from Michigan. You are allowed to fight and not get kicked out of the game. Well, if it's really bad, I've never personally seen in while on the ice in Canada.
When you connect on a closed fist punch, it's pretty much guaranteed you will get ejected and fined

Football never really had a steroid problem. Baseball was the one who had an epidemic of steroid use in the 80s and 90s

Best fights are from before the 2000's. Football was more violent and everybody was more roided up
In my opinion, fights in football are stupid. They're wearing enough pads to take a hard hit, but they think their fists are gonna do something
To call those fights, is to call legitimacy to soccer fouls. The NBA calls them non-flagrant twos. Yur 20-ply turlet roll... Step yo-game up, sun.
No they need to be suspended or it would happen at every game on purpose, because they know there would be no consequences. Their suppose to be Professional

The NFL has definitely gotten soft in some regard, but also some of the players are getting out of control. They’re turning out players with big heads and attitudes. Coaches and refs need to keep them in check somehow. Also, as a Steelers fan, the Rudolph/Garrett fight is still so shocking.
i believe they line their pockets
When you make millions a season a 450k fine is nothing.
Buddy Ryan didn't care...
I disagree...if you allow fights the game would be called Boxing not Football. There are rules in every game & one in football is you can't physically fight. Period.
You hv no idea how that feels, how brain smashing that hit to the helmet was.
Put on a football helmet and let anyone hit you across that side of your head with an open hand.
Called the head slap and illegal.
*See Deacon Jones
It'll brain you!
NFL fights are more interesting than exciting 🤔
If allowed to continue with no team interference andre Johnson would have destroyed Finnegan.
It's only a foul if they catch doing it. Only one players is gonna get the gate.
Listen to the commentators. You’re going to get ejected for fighting it’s football not boxing
The money goes to charity
DUUUUUUUUUVVVVVVVAAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!! !!!
I think the money might go into the retired players pension fund
You wanna see real fights watch some nhl
Nah swinging full fists at helmets
Fine money goes to charity.
