There are two important differences between LBJ withdrawing in 1968 and today. First, LBJ withdrew in March - it is now July and most of the states are well past their final filing day for a new candidate. Second, there was no internet in 1968. If president Biden were to decide not to run, it would be most efficient for him to resign the presidency to clear the path for the vice president. Due to the problem with Ohio and the very late schedule for the democrat convention, this decision would have to be made in the next four weeks.
Hubert Humphrey was a much more popular vice president than is Harris. There's no way she would win against Trump and there really isn't anyone the Democrats could pick in the short time left to them. The Democrats are stuck with Biden.
