Tolkien's greatest story told by an incredibly passionate story tellier: Rainbow Dave, this series is fantastic
The Children of Hurín is good, shouldn't call it Tolkien's greatest story though!
Hear hear
Sister f****r
Yes, indeed rainbow Dave definitely know how to tell a story and I love the background music behind it
Amen!
You do the best analysis of the good professors work. I had a hard time waiting for this video, but great work requires patience. You do great work, I thank you for all your labor's and enjoy every minute of your work. Professor Dave of RainBellerland
Thanks very much!
Was not expecting Andróg to get such a noble send-off. What a guy, that Tolkien.
Went from a dude I just wanted to stop being in the story at all, to a guy who I felt nothing but mad respect for in the end. This story is really friggin’ good.
This was truly the first Helms Deep of Turin's story.
As a “forever fan” of the “the fundamentally fabulous and the flabbergastingly (?) fantastic Finrod Felagund” I approve of your alliteration. It provided needed distraction from my despair of Beleg’s impending doom (I tried to create my own alliteration with distraction, despair and doom, but it is 5 am in California and my brain is still sleeping … ). As usual, you provided stunningly superb storytelling, Rainbow Dave!
Thanks very much!
It's hard not to cry when that happens with Beleg.
You know, when you read the Silmarillion version of this chapter it seems as if Túrin and his followers did not exceed 50 people and neither that they ever effectively controlled land beyond their headquarters. Really pleased to learn that Túrin´s efforts at this stage of his life proved quite fruitful (for a time) in the standalone novel version, thank you Dave : )
Never before have I clicked a notification so enthusiastically.
I know the feeling. When I saw it, I remembered why I was excited that it was Friday.
This is my all-time favorite Channel in all the lands of RUclips. Thank you Rainbow Dave for all your hard work. Your channel is brilliant and epically entertaining.
Thanks very much!
Ah I just love how Tolkien brings you to the brink of despair, and then suddenly in the deep dark there’s comes a light. Another Amazing episode. I truly enjoy your story telling abilities and can’t wait for the next video. Thanks👍👍
This is so cool… the children of hurin is one of the best books of middle earth. I’m so happy it’s getting more and more recognition
Agreed it was the first story that I read of the silmarillion when the book came out and I fell in love
I have been listening to the children of hurin read by Christopher Lee. I have also been reading the silmarillion for many years but that's reading and listening to a powerful and tragic story. We all use our imagination when hearing the children of hurin but it's great to listen to you breaking it down my friend. It's always important when reading this kind of tale to hear someone else's perspective. You have done this one very well Dave. Plus I have always liked Androg. His redemption at his death is often overlooked. 🙂🙂🙂🙂
Christopher Lee is the perfect narrator for Tolkien, with Martin Shaw a close second.
Martin shaw reads the silmarillion very well. To my shame I've stopped reading and just listen. Be screwed if the internet crashed 😆
PS - The friendship & camaraderie between Turin & Beleg is SO awesome lol I would love a whole video just about the relationship between those two!!
Ah, thanks a lot for your storytelling.
Poor Beleg. As he was lying bound and helpless and despaired to know Turin promised to terrible suffering, how could he have known the pain his own rescue attempt would inflict to his friend?
Spoilers noooo 😢 I want him to save Turin but I constantly forget this story does not have a happy ending.
Rainbow Dave, thank you for another amazing video!!! I really appreciate the alliteration in Finrod's name!! Keep up the amazing work!!
Morgoth’s “ring” is the whole planet Earth itself, not just Beleriand. Ironically Fëanor’s rebellion against the gods kept Morgoth’s attention and energy focused on the northwest, preventing his ultimate highjacking of Arda from out under the Valar’s feet.
I personally like the footnote version of Mîm’s betrayal story the best. It’s a middle ground between the telling of him straight up betraying the Gaurwaith and being captured by Orcs. It also makes sense with his character; being wrathful from the death of his son and not wanting harm to come to his last living son, and also why he’d choose his so over the lives of those that he has a vendetta against. Also since his curse on Andróg essentially and seemingly failed, this is a way to get his revenge and bring the curse on Andróg’s life to fruition.
I love the way you tell the stories @Rainbow Dave. You breathe life into Tolkien’s works like none other. I wait with baited breath for the next instalments but feeling sad that the story will end and there will be no more episodes to watch. Your scholarship and hard work is testament to your talent. Thank you 😅
I am absolutely loving this series! The Children of Hurin is such a roller coaster ride
Thanks for the upload! This series is fantastic. This is the one lotr channel to rule them all ❤
You are THE definitive Tolkein whisperer, bro…
…keep it up. It may seem like mere content creation, but you’re trailblazing HISTORY here. You’re so damn listenable!!! Thank you for illuminating the landscape of Tolkein’s world with your rainbow
Dave, you've done it! You've made me appreciate The Children Of Hurin! I have never before been able to stay interested in the story, even though I have read it a couple of times, trying to find my way to connect-but your series of videos has gripped me-is it possible? Could I try reading the story again and dare I say, enjoy it??? Thank you for all the insights and especially the details I had missed in my skepticism.
Awesome! I’m glad you’re enjoying it!
I've read the story a dozen times. It is never a fun, easy read.😞
would like to point out that the first age is the longest age and began with the awekening of the elves
We’re told it is the longest Age, but we’re never given a date of when exactly it began.
@@tolkienuntangled sure but it should at least be said that it is the longest age and not the shortest loved the video
@@mihajlo7835 thanks! And you’re absolutely right, Tolkien definitely did state that the First Age is the longest. But the calendar can be confusing, in that Year 1 of the First Age is only about 590 years before the very end of the First Age. But as you know there’s an awful lot of First Age that happened before the Year 1.
The first Age was the first time the Valar started counting time. Who knows how long it was from the time the Valar appeared and the Awakening of the Elves.
Another point. The Nature of Middle Earth tells us that each Valarian year is much longer than we all had assumed based on all the other published writings. Galadriel might even be close to 19000 years old. Personally, I like the smaller number for converting those years to lunar or solar years.
Rainbow Dave does it again.... Top Man... You are a great narrator.
What an awesome tale the children of Hurin is. And your mastery to tale it providing profund context allows me to revisit this tale once again with new knowledge and perspective. As I watched your video its clear that Tolkien warns his audience of two proverbial advises
1. Hate is always safe destructive.
2. Failure to unite against the true evil is what allowed Melkor to inflict so much pain and sorrow to all the peoples of middle earth. One can even argue that even the wisdom of Melian the Maiar fails to promote the union of all peoples against Melkor. A lesson that Gandalf brings to absolute relevance in the 3rd age.
Thanks for this amazing series RD!
Awesome! Really interesting points!
this is the best tolkien channel! and straight honestly! i love the rest but u gota good voice...good timeline pace....very detailed and everything u do is so needed! Keep up the great work rainbow dave! A name like that u think u were a hippie who smoked mad buds then i seee ya and i still think the same thing! But that is kewl I smoke mad buds as well! Keeep up the great work RAINBOW DAVE!
Dude I am LOVING this series! As someone who’s never read the books and mostly only knows what I learned from the Jackson films, this kind of early FA/SA history is freaking FASCINATING! Thank you for this, very well done! It’s clear that you put a lot of effort & thought & passion into this script. It is very much appreciated!!!
Glad you enjoy it!
Agreed. Loving your work Rainbow Dave!!!
That said, If you love this story having seen only the movies; wait until you read the books. I have read a lot of Tolkien's Middle Earth story; and I am in love with Middle Earth. But I probably have at least as much as I've already read, left to read.
No single author has EVER created such a deep, complex world as this. Groups of authors have created other complex fantastical or mythical worlds; but, as I said, no ONE person has devoted as much time and effort to their creation as has Tolkien. Not Martin, not Lewis, not Rowling.
Sorry to ramble; but,I SWEAR, if the movies impressed you, you will love reading the books.
Peace and love.
PS and I've read the lord of the rings and the hobbit many times. The other books are a bit boring because of the writing style. I never could get into those.
Mim:
Goes to gather roots. Son is captured. Mim’s hatred for Androg, Beleg and the Orcs gets mixed up, since his love for his sons guides him. He gets the orcs to release him and his son with his promises, returns to “collect roots” at a later date with an intent toward betrayal, and the rest happens as stated. Ibun’s death is an interesting scenario to speculate about.
Now we have more proof that the people behind LOTR RoP don't know what they are doing. According to an interview I just happened to find while browsing they said that they feel the need to introduce a love interest for Elrond in the second season. But it can not be Celebrien because its not believable that he would marry the daughter of one of his best friends. It could give an impression of incest or even pedophilia because of the age difference. And he must have been there for the birth. Their words not mine. Talk about idiots.
Only cowards cry for ransom. Warriors fight to the end. Mim is reprehensible by bargain and should be loathed by tortured souls.
Instant like, before even seeing the video. Looking forward for this chapter :D
Watching your videos evokes the same feelings I had when I first read these stories, an awe and adoration of magical majesty.
Always a good Friday when you upload my man! Aaabbbsolute LEGEND!
Masterful again Dave. One hour of pure bliss. Thanks infinitely.
Aragorn is black.
Well, some silly card game and people who write tales for “modern audiences” would certainly have you think so, but the author of this entire legendarium described Aragorn as having “dark hair, streaked with gray, and pale skin.” Pretty hard to equate pale skin with being a black man.
@John I'm pretty sure the OP was being sarcastic.
@@herbthompson8937 Pretty much yeah. Just sore about the Magic The Gathering melanin boost.
This generated at least four replies. Nice work on the algorithms. 😁👍
Only your wonderful story telling could keep me listening to such a harrowing tale! Thank you RD!
Just got my copy of the silmarillion this week super excited to catch up with you
Nice work dude
Thank you for making these videos i really enjoy them
You tell such a wonderful story with so much enthusiasm and mystery. I am really enjoying this! Thank you .💖
Another video, another delight, another gift from Rainbow Dave! This is so well done, so wonderfully narrated, it’s such a pleasure to witness your passion and love for the lore! Thanks!
Very kind of you!
I love how passionate you are when you're telling the story
You make it feel like if we were there and seeing the events .. you're great ❤
Just fantastic storytelling and, yes, story crafting. Of course this is Tolkien’s work, but what parts you share, in what order, with which tangents and backstories and foreshadows, are what make your works so fantastic.
Now that I’ve watched all of your previous works, whenever you drop a new video I find a period of uninterruptible time to ensure I get the full experience. The last 15 minutes of this episode were not just epic, but a near perfect cliff hanger given the steep walls of the summit!
Thank you for taking the time to complete these ever-so passionately curated stories for your overjoyed fans.
Thanks very much!
Man I underestimated how good feeling the rest of Turin's story was.
All this time I just kept skipping to the parts with Glaurung, but now I know this story would effortlessly make a solid trilogy like the Hobbit movies, albeit more of a tragedy story.
44:36 this is one of those places where I think it is important to remember all of these stories are told *by a character in Middle Earth*. The Children of Húrin represents the story as compiled by Daeron, from Húrin's memory: Húrin is not exactly an unbiased narrator here, Mîm's treachery destroyed Túrin's life. Daeron isn't unbiased either: if nothing else, the collapse of Dor Cuarthol made Doriath less safe. But people who lived in Dor Cuarthol might well have known more about Mîm's betrayal than Húrin shared with Daeron (let's be clear, Húrin *did* know he wasn't being totally truthful but it's pretty understandable why he'd try to damn Mîm's memory). Either they survived the battle, or they were elves reborn after the War of Wrath: when Manwendil Parmaitë is compiling the Quenta Silmarillion (the latest decision by Tolkien was that this document was a Númenorean creation). Mîm himself is long since dead, so nobody can prove which version of his motivations is the full truth. The accounts are not so conflicting however, that they can't simply be chalked up to three differently biased narrators.
Nice, can’t wait to watch this!
glad to have you back, buddy, keep up the good work
Awesome, thanks for sharing your gift Rainbow Dave
When I saw there was a new chapter, I was so excited...I love your Turin videos!!
I really love your work and how much effort you put in but I was wondering if youve ever had to cut out anything because you trip over a word or two
I know I would have hours upon hours of flubs
And was wondering if youd ever release a video of said moments?
Thank you rainbow dave!
Youre awesome!
Another masterpiece mr man of many colors.
5:32. This reminds me of what Edward Longshank's (the First)'s castles around Wales were referred to as the iron ring!!!
Another fantastic episode :D
My God, you are such a marvelous storyteller! You had me figuratively on the edge of my seat, and also in tears at the end. Thank you so much for telling these stories and for telling them so well 💜
Then said Androg, "I don't want to go on the cart, I feel happy, I feel happy!"
first
Why does that matter? You say nothing else substantial?
@@gutterpeach just a bit of harmless fun, calm down lol
Another great video, absolutely loved it.
Best one so far Rainbow Dave, the beginning of this one was ur best storytelling IMO
“If orca have dreams then surely Turin son of hurin is the stuff of their nightmares” So sick! 😁
Bad ass intro Rainbow Dave! And what a super sick video! Thank you for your work 🙏🏼
Comment for the algorithm!
Such fantastic story telling. Thank you
your storytelling makes me feel like I would stand against a Balrog!
Was so happy to see this notification this morning.
O MY GODDDDD thanx Rainbow Dave!!! 🌈💙💛❤🤍
YESSSSS I HAVE BEEN CHECKING EVERY DAY I AM SO EXCITED
I'm enjoying this series. Thank you.
Thank you, Dave! ❤❤❤ I can't wait to get home to watch this!
Thank you for this. Great work ❤
that hurt when you said we were done for today, i was lost in the story. next time then and thank you
Love your storytelling! Long time subscriber. Huge Phan of yours! peace!
Thanks!
This was such a treat. I love your passion. I sometimes zone out listening to podcasts but you hold my attention all the way through. Thank you 😊
Another incredible post. You are the man Rainbow Dave
Thanks!
❤️❤️❤️
Thanks, RD! I had to spend a little time in the hospital last week for an emergency procedure, and your videos and Morgoths Ring helped me through it. So i was super excited to wake up this am and see this❤❤❤
I hope all is well!
@Tolkien Untangled thank you! Much better now, just need to r&r, and what better way than with you and Tolkien?!
Well done, Dave of Many Colors
Nice work dude thanks
Love your passion, Rainbow Dave! You do such justice to the drama of the tale 😃
Absolutely engrossing Dave. Wonderful as always. Thank you for all the hard work you do making your videos
The dark depths of Morgoth's Curse matches the love and loyalty of Beleg Cuthalion to Turin son of Hurin.
It’s finally here!!!
Rainbow Dave: "This is just speculation, Tolkien never says this."
Me: Accepts new headcanon completely and will now die on this hill.
Pretty nearly every time 😂
What a delight! I’ve so been looking forward to this update. Thank you!
Hi Rainbow Dave! Just wondering what other videos you’ll be making for this Silmarillion series? How much are you going to cover? I’m very excited and hopeful to learn about the entire history of Middle Earth and Arda from you because I find your enthusiasm, opinions and genuine love for the entirety of the Legendarium contagious; I cannot listen to any other creators on this. I’m sold on your channel and videos and very soon I’ll have watched every single video! Thank you if you reply 😊
After Children of Húrin I’ll do a shorter series about the Silmaril of Doriath, and then longer one on the rise and fall of Gondolin, and then finally the Voyages of Earendil and the War of Wrath to finish off the First Age.
@@tolkienuntangled that’s so exciting!!! Will you go into the second age as well? I’m so excited for more of your content.
@@gutterpeach with enough time, I’d like to go through the entire history of Middle-earth in chronological order. All the way up to the end times. But it will probably be quite a while before I get to late Third Age things like Rohan and the Stewards of Gondor. 😊
Andróg is kind of a proto-Boromir in that he can act and do questionable things (from our perspective) but in the end he shows the kind of man he is deep down with an epicly honorable last stand and final act of kindness. Where Boromir tells Aragorn first of "the little ones" being taken Andróg thinks "I can't save my friend but I know who can" then entrusts Beleg with the task
Amazing work friend!!! Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to Tolkien. You really care about giving us the listeners amazing stories.
Dave you are an absolute jewel. Thank you for the amazing told story❤
Man, this really puts into perspective just how young Turin was when he accomplished everything be did. Such a good story!
so good! can`t thank you enough
Always love your videos and enthusiasm! Little confused by the first section referencing Morgoth's Ring though. I thought Morgoth did this more as Melkor during the Battle of the Powers at the Foundation of Arda. I can totally imagine him continuing to do this to Beleriand but I thought by this point he concentrated his will more on his own creatures. Do you have a reference specifically for Beleriand and corrupting the lands of his enemies? The only thing I remember is the destruction of Beleriand caused by the War of Wrath which is partly caused by him needed to be fought physically because of the terrible grip he now had on the physical realm (but was also caused by the might of the Valar's host.)
My day just got 100% better. I’ve been waiting for this one so much!!
Beleg was for a very long time one of Thingol's marchwardens and generally top military people. The elves of Doriath were known to have formerly hunted and killed petty dwarves, Mim's people. Which comes across as quite possibly genocide even if the details of who did what to whom are a little hazy. Elves are immortal, which raises the possibility that Beleg may well have been involved in or to a large extent even in charge of the hunting of the petty dwarves on the orders of his king.
In which case Mim would have a pretty solid reason to hate Beleg's guts. It's also possible that Beleg wasn't involved, but that Mim thinks he was and hates him because of it.
Thanks for this. Excellent Video as always. Love to hear your insights about the story. This is tour best series yet.
Had to wake up early for work and was ready to be not happy about it but then I saw that the latest installment of this week’s obsession was uploaded out of the blue when I thought I’d have to wait who knows how long. Now I’m ready for the day. Thank you Dave and thank you Ilúvatar!
The last stand of the Gaurwaith amidst the red flowers on the hill, and everything that happened there . . . the friendship, the betrayal, the redemption. This is incredibly powerful.
I've heard a lot of people say that Tolkien's characters and stories are black and white with nothing in between. They don't know this story.
I’ve always read Mim like in the Disney character madam Mim, not with the long i-sound. It confuses me
Well done my friend!
I don't know if the nightmares of Orcs is really that high of barometer.
Considering they're now probably scared to the bone of a bunch of four foot dirt farmers.
Dave, now you must write the screed adaptation of this. Just as with the rings of power. I wish I could see the last momnts of Androg.
Simply the best
Rainbow Dave has the passion for narration when it comes to tolkien. I can't wait until you do Tuor's story in the fall of Gondolin or king Dior.
THIS is way better than that pile of Amazon dung which shall not be named.
Your materials are great Thank you for connecting dots from various sources.
I disagree that the control of the land is Morgoth's ring. I thing his servants are closer to that. It was said that literally his power was lowered as he transfered it to his servants.
