So who was the first guy who invented this? was he just sitting around one morning having a cup of tea and thought, yeah, i know melt rock & slag, then spin into fibres and make amazing insulation??? how did this whole process come about?
Roflol Probably! If he worked in a foundry, he may have noticed slag when it would make strings as it is removed from the iron. I've seen this in my own experience. Then,,,,, BAM! having that coffee and away he went. Lol
Rockwool International A/S is a Danish company that was founded in 1909 under the name I/S H.J. Henriksen and V. Kähler. In 1962, the company was split into H+H and I/S Kähler & Co., respectively, and it was in this connection that I/S Kähler & Co. took over full responsibility for what is today known as the Rockwool Group. The trademark Rockwool was first registered in 1937. In 1976, the name I/S Kähler and Co. was changed to Rockwool International A/S. In 1996, the company was listed on the Copenhagen Stock Exchange.
I’m using this to insulate my place, and it’s an unbelievable product. It presses right between the studs and simply stands on its own, and then if you run your wiring 47 inches off the deck you don’t even have to cut this stuff, but if you do, it’s one of the easiest materials I’ve ever cut in my entire life.
Over time Rockwool becomes better than fiberglass. In the beginning there isn't much difference. However Rockwool does not sag and slump like fiberglass so it will always be as good as the day it was installed.
My house (built in early 80's) had blown in rockwook in the attic on both lower and upstairs attic. Since I've had the vast majority removed and went with a fiberglass type insulation. Really couldn't really tell the difference very much. Builders in the 80's didn't have much interest is sealing windows, doors attics etc, so I suppose rockwool was the go-to back then. I still have few small areas, and I've come to learn (ironically) that when I had gas fireplace logs installed a while back, the 'glowing embers' effect turns out to be, yep....Rockwool... Who would have thunk it.
One huge difference between stone wool and fiberglass is that the latter a) deforms easily, whereas the former 'springs back into former shape - it means filling cavities is easier b) the latter absorbs and retains water very well, it's difficult to get fiberglass to dry, whereas stone wool is hydrophobic to a small degree (but it will absorb water long term), and c) fiberglass has the unfortunate range of particles, that may result in various forms of lung cancer.
To be pedantic, Rockwool is a company name and brand name of The ROCKWOOL Group. The generic product is called "stone wool", which is a type of mineral wool. While very informative about an excellent product, the video had strong infomercial vibes. 😊
It will not cause itching, but use powder on any exposed skin just in case you are allergic to it.We installed this product in every wall in our home, itching was never a issue , neither was dust from it but where a mask also.
I agree it was an infomercial. I was unaware that rockwool has been verified as fire resistant, it's my understanding that rockwool does not want the liability of claiming to be fire resistant. Wondering what the carbon footprint of the product is, you know mining, transport to factory, using natural gas and other products(coal????,)
I used to work in a factory that made this stuff and is likely the reason why I have respiratory issues now. The fibers do not look like your picture, they hit the spinning wheel and get thrown off into an actual cotton candy stringiness. They then fall about 50 feet onto a conveyor where they travel the entire length of the building into mixers and shapers.
I have used this material many times but now I know how it is made. And when insulating a home you should wrap the rock wool in plastic to prevent any fibres from entering the home and causing allergies when insulating from the inside, but it works best if you insulate from the outside and makes the house last longer.
My house is insulated in the wall cavities by glass wool. The installers told me it was made from recycled wine 🍷 bottles. A good excuse to lift an extra glass ...
Who makes this into chemical and fire resistant paper? Not the calcium carbonate based rock paper, but something that won't dissolve in sulphuric acid..
This is not an eco friendly product… it takes energy to melt the rock and slag… lots of it. Slag can contain heavy metals and other contaminants. Sheep wool is an eco friendly product that takes a LOT less inputs to be ready for installation.
Well it is compared to a lot of other types of insulation. It can be reused and so can the materials around it. It doesn’t adhere like sayin spray insolation, it doesn’t sag or mold the same way other mineral wool insulation does. All in all it has much higher cradle to cradle potential making the environmental impact lower than others. And sure it takes energy to produce but the whole point is that it will save energy in the long run adding to the eco friendliness.
A decade ago I used Rockwoll to grow the devil's lettuce indoors. Great stuff!!
same
I Like The Devils Lettuce 😂😅😂😅
Yup works awsome for that, just make sure that you deal with the PH ❤
I've used Rockwool on my kitchen ceiling, great insulation & fire safe... respect from Thailand...

Like they said in the video, nature whipped up the first rock wool. But who first tried to replicate it in the lab? I don't know.
I am sure he did not get rich of that indention.
To była kawa. Reszta się zgadza.

Best insulation ! ❤

realy intresting
Its stoned but still rocking
Have been at rockwool seen the process and recipe for the “glue” in the 80ies :) one of the best insulation in the market❤️

Rockwool is the BEST! It's all I use when there is a need for insulation.

So it's a Xerox case.
I only know it as "Itch"

@barryinn1778 fiberglass is nasty itchy stuff, if you use don't cheap out. Get the fully covered stuff
Never heard of this stuff - fascinating!
"Special resin binder" formaldehyde?
Is rookwool also marine hull building?
interesting. thanks
I toured the plant in ranson WV. very impressive place

Only insulation that’s my to go to ❤
Are we in 'Hedehusene/Roskilde(festival)/Copenhagen'? Where it all started and the hq is placed! 🕵️
I have used rock wool and like it It is a bit more expensive but in the end well worth it
It seems less itchy and scratchy than fiberglass.
Simply Superb . . . Knowledge
Can you make rockwool just with wind and solar energy?
A see a huge amount of energy used to produce this product.
First view 👌
Almost 'Bestos. =3
Best channel on youtube
I used to lecture at a college in Wales, and one guy had a project making slate wool from the large amounts of slate waste in mid Wales slate mines...
How is Rockwool used in Pharma facility construction for temperature control ? Is rockwool preferred to glass wool ? If yes why?
Nature is amazing . Materials in thier simplest form more amazing and beautiful
Nature is so AweFully AMazeSing 💝
How does it compare with PIR?, what is the u value 100mm thick?
Google it, it's not difficult. It has half the insulation value of PIR.
Isn't the other big characteristic its heat tolerance?
Yes. It does not burn

It never really told us how they make it fluffy.
Interesting...the HQ is 500 meter away from where I live. (Hedehusene, Denmark )
I feel itchy all the sudden
I used it on a remodel. It's not really itchy at all, nothing like fiberglass. Excellent sound deadening! Really impressive stuff.
Just need to wear gloves while handling. It will pricked you.
Volcanic glass, obsidian and fibreglass.
I just love how everything has to be sustainable, lol. How about it’s just a good product.
Lava rock
The health hazards would be similar to Fiberglass or Asbestos, depending on type. Definitely need to have separation from human occupants.
Highly energy intensive. Carbon footprint through the roof.
Whoop Diddy doo da.
Good, carbon is plant food. It makes our planet greener.
👍🙂
Hemp is similar.
Hemp burns
Last comment. 😅
rock wool is not a new invention >was used in post WW2 houses back in the 40's/50's(had craft paper backing)

So it's a cheap material to make but cost 2 times more then all other insulation
An excellent method of fire damage reduction in forested regions....
Oh just use popcorn insted
wear a face mask when using this mess. also long sleeves.
best VS asbestos
Can you tell us how fart rock insulation is made?
Cabbage..
WAY TOO MUCH FLUFF AND WAY TOO LONG.
Waaaaa
It’s pitched at Yanks. Why use one sentence when twelve unrelated ones will do?
ROCKWOOL support Russias war mashine
That makes sense how rockwool it's made from basalt. Basalt Stone is petrified giant ancient tree remains,
