A friend introduced me to Rich Mullins in 1991. We were both in our 20s and far from home, two Midwestern girls who met as missionary English teachers in Japan. I collected all of Rich’s CDs and played them constantly. His music taught me to embrace feeling like an outsider, and the loneliness and isolation that was part of being a foreigner far from home, to revel even in the feeling of not belonging, of otherness. As Christians, we are all foreigners in a country which is not our home. We are simply passing through on our way to our final and better destination where we are truly meant to be. To be lonely, misunderstood and often heartbroken over the brokenness of this world is to be in imitation of Christ. Even when we are surrounded by loved ones, it is each person’s destiny to walk this road alone with Christ as our only constant companion. Rich didn’t shy away from the contradictions of the Christian life-faith and doubt, community and times of profound aloneness. Everything from God is a gift, even the suffering, because it is during the darkest times that we see Him the most clearly. When Rich was killed, I was back Stateside, wondering what my next steps would be. Rich was taken from us just 3 weeks after Princess Diana was also killed in a car crash. The coverage of her death was so overwhelming, I didn’t even find out that Rich had left us until sometime later. That was a very bad dark year, for me personally and also for the whole world, to have lost 2 such vital lives so young. The loss of Rich and his fellow troubadour prophet Keith Green to violent premature deaths brings home that the ways of God are mysterious…and incomprehensible. We have to accept that one day we will understand why. About 3 years after Rich’s death, I saw Mitch McVicker in concert. Mitch was in the car with Rich that day and when I saw him, he was still recovering from his injuries. I’m not sure the trauma of losing Rich Is some thing that any of us are meant to get over, but I hold onto the hope that I will meet our brother one day in the presence of Jesus and the joy will be complete.

Knowing him from a roots moment, this comment was probably one that provided a perspective that few understood, but more so, your struggles or thoughts of. He was one of sharing the journey, without righteousness. His was a true understanding if scripture without righteousness, rather humility. I came back to this sound today for peace of "real" sharing of a peace in Jesus, a moment shared 50 years ago with Rich and his message. The truest of prophets in that day and beyond, without profit, judgement, flags blazing....just scripture without tooling for benefits. Wish you peace.

My grandfather, who was a medical missionary to Thailand from the 1950s until the mid-1970s, was a frequent guest speaker at Christian colleges and camps after his return to the US. On one occasion in the late 1970s, he spoke to students at Cincinnati Bible College and Seminary (later renamed Cincinnati Christian University), and Rich Mullins, then a student there, had a conversation with him afterward, beginning a friendship that would last the rest of Rich's life. While I never had the opportunity to meet Rich personally, my grandfather and other family members who did meet him all spoke highly of him and I have always been a fan of his music. We were all deeply saddened at the news of his death. My grandfather passed away a few years ago, and I am confident that their friendship has been renewed and grown in Heaven.

    • @jackeggleson4102
      @jackeggleson4102 Год назад +2

@@newblakestone I quite agree that if you try to be like Jesus you won't be yourself; that's why I love the idea that Rich Mullins generally got across in some of his sermons before and after songs, which was, to paraphrase, that we don't have to change who we are for God to love us; we just need to believe that he loves us for who we are, because if the only way for him to love us was for us to try to be like Jesus, we'd never succeed, so the true way to be saved has nothing to do with trying to be perfect, but rather by loving God and having faith that he loves us.

Saints and children we have gathered here to hear the sacred story
And I'm glad to bring it to you with my best rhyming and rhythm
'Cause I know the thirsty listen and down to the waters come
And the Holy King of Israel loves me here in America
And if you listen to my songs I hope you hear the water falling
I hope you feel the oceans crashing on the coast of north New England
I wish I could be there just to see them, two summers past I was
And the Holy King of Israel loves me here in America
And if I were a painter I do not know which I'd paint
The calling of the ancient stars or assembling of the saints
And there's so much beauty around us for just two eyes to see
But everywhere I go I'm looking
And once I went to Appalachia for my father he was born there
And I saw the mountains waking with the innocence of children
And my soul is still there with them wrapped in the songs they brought
And the Holy King of Israel loves me here in America
And I've seen by the highways on a million exit ramps
Those two-legged memorials to the laws of happenstance
Waiting for four-wheeled messiahs to take them home again
But I am home anywhere if You are where I am
And if you listen to my songs I hope you hear the water falling
I hope you feel the oceans crashing on the coast of north New England
I wish I could be there just to see them, two summers past I was
And the Holy King of Israel loves me here in America

    John 3.16-21
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

You ought to check out Andrew Peterson (specifically his songs The Reckoning, Many Roads, etc.)...lots of people consider him to be the heir to Rich Mullins, in a way. Andrew has a hammered dulcimer piece on every one of his albums as a tribute, so there's some truth to it. He wrote a song called Three Days Before Autumn about Rich's death that's really beautiful..

    II Chronicles 17:3-6; v10
"Now The Lord was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the former ways of his father David; he did not seek the Baals, but sought the God of his father, and walked in His commandments and not according to the acts of Israel. Therefore The Lord established the kingdom in his hand; and all Judah gave presents to Jehoshaphat, and he had riches and honor in abundance, and his heart took delight in the ways of The Lord; moreover he removed the high places and wooden images from Judah...And the fear of The Lord fell on all the kingdoms of the lands that were around Judah, so that they did not make war against Jehoshaphat."
My prayer is for a Godly President to be elected in 2024, that our land may be blessed.

Yeah, me too. I bet he's up there spiritual warfaring and busting down demons all over the place. I am from Wichita KS where he is from. He used to have coffee with my little sister in the late eighties. My sister would record and mail cassettes of his music to me. I was and still do, live in Texas. In the late nineties, he came and played at Carpenters Way church. Man, I was too shy to go back stage and let him know about him and my sisters friendship. Sure wish I would have. That was the year God called him home. Liturgy Legacy and a Ragamuffin Band is my favorite!

Yeah, I'd like to go to Ireland too. I know your not supposed to boast about tomorrow and iv e recently leared a lesson in that but I think it is at least feasible for me. I guess I don't need to put my plans ahead of God's or God himself who died for me. Rich is such a great reminder of Christ's love. I have nearly all of his songs from his albums on a playlist on my channel if your interested. In Love Jeff

Paul passed away in 1966. Another truly gifted person. Billy Shears took his place. There was a video of George Harrison's wife acknowledging Faul as Billy way back in the day on YT. Hi level peeps did not want a mass hysteria. After 1966 Beatles changed in appearance and did not perform again until some time in 1967. It was not the same and not the best. The Abbey Road album cover was sort of a burial. Interesting, i did some research.. God bless you and your family.

I thought it was his song Elijah that was creepy. "When I die, I'm going to go out like Elijah,.......with my chariot on fire........." That's exactly what happened!

    • @intotheblue96
      @intotheblue96 7 лет назад +5

If there is something I hate, it's when people romanticize his death, and compare it to Elijah's. Elijah was spared from death and was taken up. Rich was thrown out of out of control Jeep that flipped over. Rich landed in the road unable to move out of the way, and was run over by a tractor trailer. The only was he was able to be identified was by dental records.
Now tell me again he went out like Elijah.
