It's good to hear both sides of the story. It was a war where poor people from both sides fought on the ground over matters created by politicians. People who have been wronged will fight back, with any means necessary. Some of these soldiers acted like terrorists, brutally beat innocent people. Killed innocent people.

In the first part he says when they heard of the murder of the three "honey-traped" Scottish soldiers. His battalion was chomping at the bit to get over there and take on the IRA and the Catholic people who gave them support, then goes on to say that there was no massacre that the soldiers shot at people who shot at them, but as he describes the highly trained and disciplined paras, might have shot people who weren't armed or shooting back. He poo-poos the idea of 50 year old eye witness accounts yet is emphatic about his own 50 year old eyewitness account. And finally goes on to say aren't you lucky we're so disciplined otherwise we would have killed more of you. I understand that this podcast channel takes all view points and backgrounds, and that's why I like it. More of the same. But for a contributor with such a professional background and education, this man is wearing the biggest rose tinted glasses of all time. "you Irish are great at looking back" don't look back, but if you do I'll gaslight you into thinking we were great and only shot those who deserved it. Those who committed the crime of being outside their Ballymurphy houses when the shooting started"

To give him his due he is measured in some of his comments. The Catholic reaction to internment for example.
But dismissing evidence beacuse the event happened years ago and insinuating those people are lying. Or at best confused doesn't hold water in the least. A traumatic event is usually seared into the memory.
Also a lot of whataboutism. You might think we're bad but others would be have been much worse. Couldn't get much worse than Bloody Sunday and Ballymurphy! Although the British Govt. also bears responsibilty for deploying trained killers into a public order situation.
Also his comments about how protestants were treated in the Irish Free State and Republic are nonsense. Although I've no doubt some Northern Irish Protestants have been taught that this is the case.

@@johnnypickles5256I would probably agree with the first guys statement and I am Scottish. I remember finding harry mccallions book in a library and reading parts of it. This guy was pretty much just a brainless psychopath who needed a career and the army indulged his desire to murder ppl. I highly doubt he had any idea why irish ppl hated the British in northern Ireland and he essentially just picked the British side as a career choice and an excuse to kill and get paid. Interesting that he was a catholic from Glasgow with Irish heritage yet ended up fighting against what would have been pretty much his own ppl. Only real excuse I can think of is that he was from a criminal background and his real dad wasn't around and his home life was pretty brutal. Thats fair enough but he's an old man now and should really know better than to be hiding behind the excuse that the Irish nationalists were the bad guys. His idea that the majority of northern Ireland wanted to be British is flawed as well. The British partitioned off the north and made sure there was a majority there in favour of remaining British. If the whole island was to vote as a single entity then a united Ireland would be the outcome. This guy's just doubling down and trying to justify the atrocities with pathetic excuses so he can feel better.

I spent a lot of time in Belfast in the 1990's. My ex- wife was from their. Her parents were protestant but lived in Malone (posh area) next door to Catholic/Nationalists.
Brendan Hughes & other IRA senior officials had a house in Malone.
No issues whatsoever. Most people were 'professionals' solicitors, accountants, architects, Queens Uni lecturers etc and they were educated enough to know that violence is no long term solution. Co-operation & acceptance was the future...Hopefully
Five miles down the road on the Falls/Clonard/Shankhill area Protestant/Loyalists & Nationalist/Republicans were killing each other.
I remember Gerry Adams driving round West Belfast waving the Tricolours when the Good Friday Agreement was signed.
    Why?
The GFA retained the status quo. Northern Ireland remained part of the UK..It didn't become part of The Republic.
Thirty years of death destruction & grief for what?
As an Englishman I would add that the IRA was never defeated militarily (their guns are buried but not destroyed). They were defeated politically purely because of the so called 'Dirty War'...the number of informants inside both the Republican & Loyalist Paramilitaries meant that nearly every operation was compromised.
You could argue that the Leadership 'sold out' and now as Sinn Fein welcome millions of migrants into the island of Ireland.
Makes absolutely no 2:00:09 sense to me. Those good old Pro-EU Sinn Feiner's eh?

    • @g9604

I am a Northern Ireland protestant and I agree, it is funny how republicans flew the Irish flags in the 1st ceasefire and the ultimately agreeing to the GFA. They seemed to bring the majority of nationalists and catholics with them to get to that stage. Harry makes some good points iv read his book. East Tyrone were decimated and would definitely have posed major problems for the peace process along with South Armagh units. However I still believe the peace would have come eventually as people were fed up. On the flip side, whilst the troubles are long over the GFA didn't deal with the root causes of conflict and for that reason I'm still fearful for the future or some future event that could still let the genie out of the bottle.

    • @derekrushton1705
      @derekrushton1705 2 месяца назад

@@g9604Absolutely agree. I think the IRA were allowed to break into Castlereagh Police Station & steal personal files because once they knew how many informants were in the IRA & at what level (Scappatacci etc) they knew it was all over for them.
After Partition in 1916 parts of NI were completely ignored by the Westminster Parliament. In Londonderry/Derry (Stroke City 😄) Catholics were the majority & Protestants about 35% but gerrymandering gave Protestants control. The housing conditions in the bogside where Nationalists lived were atrocious. Derry was where it all kicked off. RUC couldn't cope British Army sent in. Riots then spread to Belfast. Lower Falls/Shankhill in particular.
Internment turned the Nationalist community against the British Army. Acted as a recruiting agent for Republicans. The rest as you know, much better than me, is history.
As you know the Ulster Protestants lost more lives in WW1 than any other Regiment. Republicans colluded to some extent with Germany in both wars.
Genuine grievances happened on both sides. One man's Terrorist is another man's freedom fighter.
The future? I sincerely hope that people can live together harmoniously BUT anyone who has been to Belfast & seen the 'peace walls' knows that the potential for trouble is still present.
      My opinion anyway.

During the whole conflict Irish nationalists/republicans were moving to work in the island of Britain in the tens of thousands. That just does not happen in what is termed a war. Harry has bought into the British narrative of turning it into a sectarian conflict when it's really about national identity. Ireland has only been divided for just over 100 years; it was one country for the rest of its history. Britain did what it does best: turning locals against each other and then walking away. Britain wasn’t even a country before the vast majority of loyalists were planted in Ireland! They sectioned off a small part of the country, and he talks about protecting the rights of the majority!

I grew up in the Uk through the troubles,Ill never forget the bombings in Belfast which was an active War zone, the capacity of Irish terrorists to kill innocent people, especially civilians and their fellow Irish countrymen knew no boundaries and also British Servicemen there protecting the law-abiding Irish who I'm sure wanted no part in people throwing petrol bombs at them and taking pot shots at them. Over 1400 servicemen lost their lives there along with 319 RUC officers and Im confident that many came back to the mainland suffering from PTSD not to mention the veterans that now face court hearings on their alleged activities over 40years ago,For all those guys and their families they paid the ultimate price some still are for the peace that now is enjoyed by people of Northern Ireland,I think both the SAS and INTEL 14 played a pivotal role in forcing the IRA to the negotiating table and the fragile peace that followed,No disrespect but the Interviewer is to young to remember the troubles and asking Harry how many people he took out of the game is one place I would never visit,There is no Romance in War John only victims and the on going grief of their families...................And To Harry thank you for you're service there my man and the countless lives you and you're comrades saved,
